- Lyrics.
I think Im goin back
To the things
I learned so well
In my youth
I think Im returning to
Those days
When I was young enough
To know the truth
Now there are no games
To only pass the time
No more colouring books
No christmas bells to chime
But thinking young
And growing older
Is no sin
And I can play
The game of life to win
I can recall the time
When I wasnt ashamed
To reach out to a friend
And now I think Ive got
A lot more than
A skipping rope to lend
Now theres more to do
Than watch my sailboat glide
And everyday can be
My magic carpet ride
And I can play hide and seek with my fears
And live my days instead of counting my years
Let everyone debate the true reality
Id rather see the world the way it used to be
A little bit of freedoms
All we lack
So catch me if you can
Im goin back
Wasn't SHE BRILLIANT, EVERYONE WHO WAS A FAN WILL NEVER FORGET HER, SADLY MISSED 😞
Hi Angela💐
You know a singer and a song are special when you still get shivers down the spine more than 50 years after first hearing it. A beautiful song and a georgeous voice = perfection.
You are absolutely right! I can not better your description.
If there was ever a song that should be put in a time capsule for future generations this would be it . Absolute brilliant pop masterpiece. Thank you Carole King for brilliant lyrics. There will never never never be another Dusty.
Just as true 11 years later....
Hi there
Carole wrote the song Goffin wrote the lyrics
The birds done a version of it sorry for the spelling
carol king is a good businesswoman but she cannot write lyrics
Dusty was my idol , it's was in the days of magic great memories, happy day ,miss her voice ❤
If you grew up in Ireland in the 80s you are familiar with this song from the esb advertisement. Brings me back to a a happier time when life was simple. My parents were in good health & I was an innocent kid with no worries. This song always brings a tear to my eye . Life can be hard . Cherish it
Those who know decent tunes from dopey advertising and films..
Absolutely spot on .. great ad great song
That advert is pure nostalgia
hardly "dopey advertising" in this context. It was a perfect fit for the message. But stay negative if that's your thing sweetie xo

Actually a Byrds song from The Notorious Byrds Brothers written by Carol King and Gerry Gofin..👍
It's my mums funeral tomorrow 19 5 21.when my brother and I carry her on her final journey, this will be playing.love you mum, thanks for sharing this beautiful song
Tears 😪
l've chosen this for mine
❤xxx
It reminds me of my mum as well she was a teenager in the 60s I am lucky to have her still bless you ❤
Sorry for your loss. May GOD comfort you all. Regards and may you overcome it.
If this priceless song doesn't bring tears to your eyes then you are not human....RIP Dusty
BLEARY EYED..AM I..!!
when I go I would like this played for me
Dave, I’ve told my wife this is one of two songs I want playing, if I go before her !
@kernowrock555 beautiful, talented, tormented soul, you are finely at peace now.
What a song. I thought I was the only one who cried to this.!
Carol King just cried when she heard this . She said Dusty's version was so perfect. This was one of Dusty's favourite songs and she had it played at her funeral .
What a voice
And song..
Dusty Springfield had to be one of the greatest female artists ever . So sad she has gone . But left ..some great music for us all to enjoy for ever... she maybe gone her music will.never
I’m not surprised. It’s absolute perfection. A magnificent song sung by a magnificent singer.
I never get tired of listening to this . Just wonderful.
Perfect
Me too
I roared my eyes out....still do..this is epic. X
Even the writer Carole King moved to tears after hearing Dusty's version.
If you aren't moved by this then you are dead inside. RIP Dusty.
I just remember the flower-laden coffin travelling through the streets and this track playing.
One of the most moving images ever.
You will never die Dusty.....
Reminds me of my Mum and a safe happy time. Who can listen to this and not cry, especially when sung by the incomparable Dusty? My sympathy and best wishes to everyone here who has also lost someone.
Fabulous memories thanks xx
🤗🙏
God bless you, I hope life has smiled on you despite the bad stuff. God bless from Ireland.
My favourite Dusty Springfield song.
Mine too! The one and only Beautiful Dusty Springfield!
Written by Carole King and her husband Gerry Goffin. The Byrds' version is more melodic and flows much better.
@@JimDeferio I still prefer Dusty's recording, she puts more emotion into it. I think most people's preference for a particular song depends largely on which version they hear first.
@@MrRQBQ I think you may mean "feeling" (emotions and feelings are very different).
The Byrds put feeling into it also but a different sort that people who are my age (73+ years old) can relate to as we remember the 1960's and what it was like maturing during those times (drugs, war, dating, work, school).
Dusty was "old school" but so was Tom Jones and some others and they did strike a chord with many.
@@JimDeferio Well I'm 80 so I can also relate to songs from the 1960s. Anyway each to his own.
Dusty was one of a kind,so inspirational, she had the ability to move the soul.much missed.,and such a iconic voice.
I have returned to this song periodically over the years and it always sets me back to my true self. what a song and her delivery is heartbreaking. her voice was crystalline....dearly missed but never forgotten, RIP Dusty 👑
Same. May God give you a;; the happiness in the world
One of the best songs ever written.
I don't think anyone can match dusty's version.
Freddie Mercury
Oh also Phil Collins
Nah.. King cried when she heard this..🇺🇦🇬🇧
In Finland we have Maarit who did this beautifully
"Ei eiliseen."
Every time I hear Dusty's Goin' Back I can hardly reach the end without welling up. Haunting is the right description for her interpretation. Dusty's voice draws on regret, desire, melancholy, and gives the lyrics a meaning well beyond the words themselves. Others have tried nobly with this song, but only Dusty makes it real.
goodness me i was so in love with dusty in my teens, am 71 now, NOTHING has changed.
written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King in 1966. Dusty's version was a cover.
Best Cover ever! Though Nils Lofgren did a pretty good version
Ditto. what a beautiful woman she was.
Phil Hewitt Good for you mate, awesome comment. Your 73 now and still love Dusty.
That's NOT going to change. Keep smiling.
@@TS-bn7zt I'm 66,we should form an oldies club.I'm proud to be an oldie,a survivor, and having lived through this golden age.One of my idol bands,The Byrds did a great version of this, too.
Utterly sublime. It makes me long for those days. Sometimes it is like an ache that I cannot ease. I was so blessed to live through that time.
WE WERE BLESSED ..
It really was a special
time .. the ending of an era and the birth of a new cycle … the excitement of the NEW !
See how smart we were to incarnate at just the right time to gather up those musical blessings and everything else that was new .
Everyone has 'I'm Going Back' running through them. Every human being has the capacity for regret, and every human being has the capacity to right their wrongs. X
every time i listen to this song i go back and there is a lot regret. but we are all time travelers so we go on and do the best we can with what we are given god bless
No, you cannot right ones wrings. One cannot retract the spoken word, the sped arrow or the lost opportunity
So very true
Very haunting. Very melancholic. Very well arranged. Dusty's best effort.
spot on
No one can touch this version...
What an epitaph !!
Wow. The impact this song has on me today than it did back in the 60s. Just BRILLIANT. Always loved Dusty and always will.
What a beautiful song it takes me back to my childhood in the sixties ❤
Sometimes you hear a song that stays dear to you and remains a ferociously poignant part of your life, this is what Dusty does for me. each time I listen to it I am choked up with emotion and occasionally tears flow unashamedly. the loss of this superbly talented lady has caused a huge void in the music scene as she was a special complete talent on her own. and I also would gladly go back to her days in the 60s see I'm one of the mods and she was an icon for a lot of us. DUSTY sleep tight and keep your talent till your fans see you again, we love you dearly and miss you immensley. Pat Allen and The Burnley & Pendle Soul Club.
+modman1 well said my friend
What a really lovely tribute and great addition to this page. Thank you.
modman1 xxx
Beautifully put.
This song it's was so underated a d so much animosity because of her Gender her life got turned upside down o e best pop artists of her time and gorgeous looking 🇮🇪☘️💚🎶
Catherine O'Brien, (Dusty) was an incredibly generous person. She shared with the world a unique talented and gifted voice. She gave herself to us in life, and to her Parents and The Cliffs of Moher, Co Clare, Ireland in the next life. Requiescat in pace.
This song turns me into an emotional wreck, it is so powerful
I'm 73 it reminds me of good times when I was at school etc brings back times ar Christmas with mum and dad who are long gone we only had a coal fire black and white TV no indoor toilet but those days had a meaning I will take these memories to my grave beautiful days when life had a meaning a purpose god bless you x
@@BrendaDrumm Hi Brenda....I'm 68 and I remember those times and I agree with you, different times different world now long gone, but I'd give anything for a time machine to go back....I'm so glad we've been blessed with memories....God bless you and take care...🙋🏼♀️🇬🇧
@Irene-qe5hu hello Irene hope you are well godless xx
my late mother was a huge Dusty fan...now i cry everytime i hear this hauntingly beautiful song.
This is so beautifull., My late husband's favourite . Now mine , he didn't get it played at his funeral , but I def will , lot of things have changed . Amanda in Norfolk x
Same here David.
My favourite song ever by Dusty! This was played at the end of Dusties funeral service. Goodnight Darling, God Bless.
Well Said Alan.
@@Isleofskye Thank you
Believe it or not,But Carole King wrote it.
You're right as she and Gerry Goffin were employed full time by a New York Company just to write hits :)
1966, 13 years old, fell in love with this song and fell in love with Dusty.
When things and life get me down, this is my go to song. Just the
Most wonderful feeling it gives my heart and an uplift no other song can
Gerry Goffin and Carole King wrote a masterpiece. Thank you.
If you are not moved by this song then you need therapy! This is the ultimate version.
Carole King herself said nobody sang "Goin' Back" better than Dusty Springfield. She ought to know, I'd say, and I totally agree with her. In my opinion, "Goin' Back" is a perfect song for Dusty's soulful delivery. Dusty's version is the gold standard, and no male singer or group even comes close.
Dusty I was always in aw of you and loved your voice and songs but this one is very special ❤xxx r.i.p
such a great song, this really takes me back to my youth, the places, the people, the music the times, they can never be replaced, i miss them , my parents ,uncles aunties and my ex wife who died in october 2011 although we where divorced for 15 years, i never stopped loving you aggie
The best song she ever did. And the rest weren't bad either.
Yes it is hard growing old...it's funny I look at people and think they're old and then I realize oh yeah I'm old too. I'm 52 part of the baby boomers. thinking young and grow older I can play the game of life to win! Everyday can be my magic carpet ride. I can play hide and seek w/ my fears and live my days instead of pounding my heels- Catch me if you can! I simply love her! I rather see the world it use to be a little bit of freedoms
It's all been said, the most wonderful song and most beautifully sung by Dusty.I defy anyone not to be moved by this magical performance.
My funeral music, that’ll make the bastards cry !!!! Mike Flint
It was played at Dusty's funeral.
One of my funeral songs
Dusty Springfield is simply magnificent never got the recognition that she truly deserves R I P Dusty 20 years gone and we still you
MY FUNERAL SONG..This song tears me up.. the lyrics say everything about life passing by & becoming older before you realise life's passed you by..."I'm going back"....
This my favourite version. Dusty nails it. All the way.
Hi Mary💐💐
this takes me back to when things were less complicated.
Wish it still like that
✌️😘 Me too💞
How the HELL can anyone, let alone 21 people dislike this???? So sadly missed
I guess everyone is different Krusty but you do wonder when someone dislikes something as great as this about their depth of mind and thought. Just be thankful you are not one of them !
I understand that but it still beats me!
Well some people just have no taste.
Oh it's easy but accidental. My fat fingers often hit the wrong button. Yikes
No taste
Beautiful version of this song stirs the emotion of my young years timeless it still moves me to tears
Frances Omoraka. Me too.
Rest in Peace lass, thank you for the music.♥
arturchance lots of love from south yorkshire england oh reight lad xxxx
I think every adult has this inner child that wants to go back to simple uncomplicated times.
@GEMINISTWIN1 True, however, Dusty's version is the one I instantly fell in love with on first hearing as a child, and now I'm an old bugger, even though others have recorded good versions in their own way, none of them really ever touched the original for me! That husky voice full of emotion, that haunting lilt, gets me still.
This brings back lots of memories, good and some sad because of people who are no longer with us. I love this song and Dusty you were a true star.
Mork611 very well said! totally agree
Anthony Raymond Coyne xxx
Pure unadulterated class! Sadly many young 'uns will miss out on Dusty, but that's a generation thing. It's also their loss.
RIP Dusty Springfield OBE
Simply in a class of her own RIP Dusty.
this song is sublime beauty xx
One of the nicest songs ever composed. So beautiful and true to life.
It sounds so sad. I love sad songs, sad music. Probably why I hate disco! The 1960's, so much talent
Dusty, you can hear from her voice that she was a tortured beacon, her demons came out in the tone of her voice. Hauntingly beautiful. One of our greats. RIP.
This song is just one of DUSTYS greatest gift to the world of music! She was a phenomenon that will never go away! Even in death she is still here thru her music! Rip dear lady! You are truly missed❤!
one of my all time favourite songs from my favourite singer, puts a lump in my throat every time.
hippie dylan THE most soulful female singer EVER! Nobody touched her then, & NOBODY touches her now! Fly on, you gorgeous angel...I hope to meet you one day on the other side, Baby!
In today's environment, we need songs like this even more. Beautiful, timeless.
There comes a time in all our lives when we take a a break from everyday concerns and sit back and reflect about all of those who we have known, loved and battled with. Some are no longer with us and others have faded away. Yet, all have had a small impact in our lives. This song does it for me. It takes me to all of those moments, places and people. This is a lovely song by a great singer.
@Life of a bluesman... Wonderful words and just so perfect..You really nailed it. Have read hundreds of comments but yours just said it all. Thankyou. A magical song, then and now in 2022❤️
Impacts every 1 😢
One of my favourite songs ever, by one of the greatest voices ever! Played at her funeral.
Memories don't leave like people do either good or bad it's something we all have God bless x
The best female artist this country has ever produced god bless you dusty
Tom Springfield songwriting
how lucky are we in this country to have experienced the magical voice of dusty. at 57 of course i had heard of her and her music, but just in the last 48 hours have i fell in love with her music especially "GOING BACK." The voice the lyrics, and the music put together has produced one MAGICAL song.. Thanks Dusty.
thought she was born in cork Ireland named mary o brien and her brother wrote songs for the seekers
it doesn't matter where she was born. the world of music is a sadder place without her voice and music.
This has to be my favourite Dusty song and believe me there are many; her rendition is sad and emotional.
I think even Carole King who wrote the song, said it was the definitive version. I have to agree.
Love you Dusty.
We played this at my mother's funeral last year. Dusty was such an iconic singer, my mum loved her. Xxx
My late Dad loved this. I'm in floods now listening, I love this beautiful song too
So catch me if you can, I'm going back... Amazing Dusty, we sure miss you.
Beautiful forever
Love this song - never been a sentiment better expressed in a song. Just wonderful!
Freddie mercury cover it)))
Hi am Colin from Portsmouth I am 67 this is music shis is lovely
I've heard a few versions of this song but for me this is and always will be the definitive one. No other version even comes close.
Simply beautiful..the greatest white female voice ever.
I agree
I thought Carol King wrote this?
Karen Carpenter was better in my opinion
@@nevillemyers8596 - It's another Goffin/King collaboration.
@@ofekool225 KC had an incomparable lower range. This lady had soul in her veins. Both were two of the finest female singers in history. For what it's worth, KD Lange has the most complete voice of any female around today : )
I have to confess, I'm not much of a Dusty Springfield fan, growing up on a diet mainly of punk and heavy metal, followed by copious amounts of prog. However, this song is an absolute classic, one of the very best by any solo singer artist. Beautiful and timeless, stands up to repeated listening.
Yesterday I listened to this song again and I forgot to say happy birthday to this great artist Rest in peace ❤️
Love this song wish we could all go back to our youths. To change a thing or two
Sometimes I dream of this time of my life. Which is good, but I wake up which isn't.
Perfect

This is beautiful. Understated with no drama and sung with real soul. What a talent!
This track and Dusty's version of 'Some of Your Lovin' are the finest tunes of the 1960s. These tracks are eternal and will be listened to for ever.
I was only a teenager when this came out. it still hit me hard as a hymn to the childhood I knew I had already lost.
Dusty was such a big part of UK pop culture in the 1960s, so sophisticated and intelligent, someone to take as a role model. Lovely lady.
What a song Dusty sings this so purely and beautifully love this song always gets me in a nostalgic and mellow mood one of my favourites xxx
My favourite song by dusty, sang with soul ,I have searched for this song for years ,what a fabulous voice rip dusty Shirley h Darlington England 🌹💕🎶💘🎊❤👌
What? no way, I know Freddie Mercury is a fantastic singer but this is by far better in my opinion. Her voice, the bassline, the piano and drums are all far more emotional and evocative, it captures the melancholy and the optimism and joy perfectly. This is surely one of the greatest songs ever written, Goffin and King's best work IMO
What? 54 years on and still it's a classic. Milestone in music, Dusty. Thanks x
CLASS / CLASS / CLASS ,we loved you dusty !
love it
+Francon So do I.
Apart from Dusty being a great artist the musical arrangement is what adds the extra class
Dusty singing Goffin & King, it really doesn't get any better than this. Sublime.
still bring tears to my eyes a legend sorely missed
Just love her voice. Great song for today's society.
This is such beautiful song! It brings tears to my eyes! Love Dusty!
will never be another Dusty.......
Gerry Goffin wrote with such beautiful insight, and Dusty just cemented even more.
I have tried to remember any female having hits pre-Beatles, then during the Beatles most popular period, then having hits post-Beatles. I can only think of one: Dusty.
I think im going back to the times when life was so easy and free!!!!!
I heard this song on the radio today, for the first time, just after that they had said that Dusty died 10 years ago today, and it made me a bit sad. But then I thought it was so wonderful that she left something so beautiful behind.
such a great hard hitting song, reminds me of when i was younger some things i wish i never did, but what is gone is gone i can't change that. this song has a lot of me in it.
Beautiful song, beautifully voice, thank you Dusty.l Thank You.
pure legend
This is my favourite Dusty song.
It was in the charts around the time of the 1966 World Cup.
Beautiful song. Gonna have to have this played at my funeral just as Dusty did.
She seems to have a led a somewhat tortured existence...maybe that's too dramatic, but she certainly seems to have had to battle with her own demons. Yet all time, there was that incredible voice touching our hearts. God Bless, Dusty, and thank you so much for your music.
Always and forever -will be magic -listening to Dusty - thanks to contributor!
Hi Jacqueline 💐💐
I, once had a dance with dusty, she was warm friendly listen to what her fans had to say, a wonderfull warn woman r.ip dusty
no wonder carol king was in tears after writing this song and hearing it sung the way it should be it moved carol so much she was in tears quite simply britains best ever female singer nobody can touch her and nobody ever will thank you so much bathside boy for posting this great song
I remember as a young boy many years ago hearing this song on the radio and along with little by little and I close my eyes..is my most enduring memories of this remarkable woman who sang so beautifully.
What I loved (and still love) about Dusty the most, apart from her beauty and talent, was her vulnerability. I still get a lump in my throat when I hear this song. She sang everything from the heart. You could hear it in her voice. RIP Dusty you were such a beautiful woman both on the outside and inside. Thanks so much to bathsideboy for allowing us to hear such a memorable and moving song. It is true gold.
A totally Beautiful song brings tears to my eyes everytime i Hear it ,No one can touch this version
