Baldur was the gentlest and most beloved being in all of Asgard. But lately, he had been plagued by gruesome visions foretelling his own imminent death. Determined to protect her son from these grim prophecies, Queen Frigg travelled across the nine realms, begging all living things not to harm Baldur- all living things except one. Iseult Gillespie shares the myth of the death of Baldur.

They didn’t mention how Loki’s wife, Sigyn, would protect Loki by catching the serpent’s dripping venom into a bowl so it didn’t fall on him. Only when Sigyn left to empty the bowl was Loki exposed to the venom which caused him incredible pain.
Why didn't she bring 2 bowls? Or a pipe of some sort to run off the venom? Why not kill the snake? Or tie a rope to snake's mouth?

If I'm not wrong, there's a belief that Frigg cried over her son's body and her tears turned into the white pearl like berries that we see on mistletoe. She took an oath that mistletoe would never again be used for destruction and if anyone happened to walk under it, she would place a kiss on their forehead. That's why we kiss under mistletoe.

She took the oath from "all plants of the Earth", but mistletoe escapes this broad grouping, because it is not actually "of the Earth". As a parasite, it only grows on other plants. Mistletoe was very important, because it was an "in-between thing". They considered it not quite of the Earth, and yet not of the Air either. Some other "in-between things":
Dawn and dusk (not quite of the Day, yet not of the Night)
The shore (not quite of the Earth, yet not of the Water)
Sea foam (not quite of the Water, yet not of the Air)

Actually Loki was behind the creation of Mjolnir. It was one of the gifts Loki tricked a pair drawf blacksmiths to forge for him, so that he could present them to the gods to make them stop being mad at him for cutting Thor's wife's golden hair while drunk.

Pratically everything is Loki's kid, he's like the Zeus of norse mythology 🤣
There are some grim things left out of the video:
1)As a punishment for killing Baldr, Váli was given birth (from Odin and Rindr, who was either a princess or a giantess), grew into adulthood in one day and slew Hodr. Yep, not only Hodr was fooled by Loki, he was slain as a quick punishment.
2)Did you see those shiny chains binding Loki? Váli bound him with those... after slaying Narfi (Loki's son) and using his entrails as chains. Other sources have another Váli as son of Loki, and this Váli was turned into a wolf to kill Narfi.
3)I think this one will go into a new video: Sigyn, Loki's wife, held a basin to catch the snake's venom. Whenever she had to empty the basin, the venom touched Loki, who writhed so violently that earthquakes happened. After so many years (centuries perhaps) of this, Loki writhed with such force he broke free. And in all that time, his hatred against the Aesir grew to such a degree he allied with the Jötnar to wage war against them, bringing forth... *Ragnarök!!!!!*
Ted-ed should hire you so that the rest of the story can be told. Also the way you wrote it: 👌 enough to get a person excited about the story and the parts missed

With Sigyn, and depending on the sources, he's father of Narfi and/or Nari, and maybe Vali too.
And let's not forget he gave birth to Sleipnir, the badass eight-legged horse of Odin. _Gave birth_ here means: _he was a mare knocked up by the stallion Svaldifari_

The reason gods didn’t want baldur to die is because baldur’s Death starts the death of all the other gods RAGNAROK
if a prophesy must be fulfilled 100%, then any of its parts could be completely prevented to permanently delay the prophesy. If there's a prophesy that say Krakens will walk on land, then killing every kraken would do it.

Oh like how Methuselah's death marked the end of earth in the old testament. Because of all the sins humans were doing God killed them all using the Great Flood but spared Noah's wife, sons, himself, and his sons wives. Man some legends revolve around truth
more like Bore Ragnorok.
Possibly, nordic storys were not written down very well except in runic forms and even then, the first translation from ancient icelandic was into german in 1026 (or 1062) and then from that form of German to hoch deutsch and then to English. The original translator was a catholic priest. As such, Baldur often takes on a "jesus" like persona. His death triggering ragnorak and then when all the gods are dead he is reborn as the only god and to bring about the new cycle of gods. Maybe this is the nordic tale, or maybe this is the german priest super imposing catholic beliefs onto a nordic story. It is really tough to say, one thing is for certain, there are many many many variations of every story and of every character.

No mention of Loki’s wife holding a cup beneath the venom, it is only when she must empty it that Loki feels pain and causes earthquakes from his trembling. Also, the “giant” he encounters isn’t a giant the way we think of them. They were just a family of anti-divinities opposing the gods-they’re implied to hold the same stature as gods.
So totally different from it's MCU version.

I remember the version of the story I read as a boy; Frigg explains to Loki that she made the pact with every plant that grows out of the ground - assuming that all plants grow out of the ground - forgetting that Mistletoe, as a parasite, grows not out of the ground but upon a tree, and so was not covered by her pact. Loki then used his dark arts to make a dart out of mistletoe and make the normally soft plant as hard as iron and lethally sharp.
Love this myth series. They're so interesting.

Fun Fact: Loki's imprisonment and the acidic drips from the Serpent are the Norse claims of earthquakes, that with each drop that strikes, the Jötunn languishes and wrestles with the earth, shaking the land aggressively. That is until Sigyn comes back to help.
Moral of the story:
If you truly love your children, don't forget the small things.
And seek out Loki and kill him.

Loki was actually not bound by chains, but by the entrails of his favorite sons. The gods were so angry at Loki that they found his favorite sons, and gave them poison (or something, i don't remember the full myth), which made them go mad. The brothers killed each other, and the gods took their entrails and bound Loki to the pillar and placed the snake above him.

You missed few important points. Loki did kill Baldor because Asgardian Gods mistreated his children. He wasn't tied with a snake, he was tied with his son's guts. Sigyn, his wife is catching the venom in a bowl. When she needs to walk away to empty it Loki is in such agony that we can feel it on Earth in form of the earthquake.
God of War's interpretation of this story is so well done :)

My favorite norse myth, and the reason why I am so interested in mistletoe lately, a both holly and pagan plant
Jeez, God of War really does turn myths into horror stories. This is portrayed as “oh everyone loves Baldur, he loves that he’s invincible!” Meanwhile in God of War, Baldur hates (and tries to kill) his mother for robbing him of a lifetime of physical feeling.
I know it's been like two whole years, and someone's probably already pointed it out, but you got some things around with Hel & Helheim. Helheim, for one, isn't a fiery landscape like plenty other versions of the Underworld, instead Helheim is iced-over, impossibly cold even. As for Hel herself, while one half of her is in fact beautiful, the other side of her body is a skeleton.

Sleipnir was a gift to Odin and was the fastest horse ever. So yeah, makes sense to ride him with a great mission in mind.

There’s a bit missing like how Loki planned his escape while he was a salmon and was the first to create a fishing net Loki found out to escape from one and one more thing when Loki was punished his wife held a bole to collect the venom to make Loki’s punishment a bit more easier

In the version I was told, the gods killed Loki’s kids in front of him and bound him in their entrails. The Norse didn’t play around.

I remember hearing this story in middle school here in Sweden. I never forgot about it, I thought it was awful that Balder died and felt so sorry for the blind God😔 And Loki’s punishment gave me nightmares

interesting thing, but Loki is actually the parent of 2 major characters in this story. He's the father of Hel, and the mother of Sleipnir (Odin's 8 legged steed)
