Despite the books titles, they don't rely on bathroom humor as their main source of humor, and can actually be pretty self aware. For example, in the second book, one of the boys suggests that they create a giant urinal called the urinator to combat the talking toilets, and the other points out that they could never get away with that in a kids book and that they were already on thin ice
I quite like the part when the robot versions of George and Harold kick a ball so far it rips through a page and the principle yells at them for damaging the book.

Rgoid, I respect your opinion, but you need to understand that first off, they tried to make the art style a 3d version of Dav's art style. Secondly, they did a really good job not resorting to potty humor, especially considering the villain of the story was named PROFFESER P. POOPYPANTS! What sets this movie apart for me from other potty-humor centered kid's movies is the fact that this one really does have heart. Dav Pilkey was repeatedly shot down and outcasted as a child for having a dream to see his comics brought to life, but in wanting to keep his dream alive he persevered. In the art book for the movie he makes note of this and is extremely honored to have CU on the screen. While most poop and butt jokes come from what 'the charts' say kids like, this movie is just sticking to a source material that came from a creator who really loved what he made.

UndyingWladeslaus I'm sure if this movie came out 8 years ago where children were still binge reading the books, it would've done hell of a lot better.
UndyingWladeslaus agreed. I fondly remember back in 97/98 when I first read the books and thought they were hysterical. The thing that made this movie stand out for me was the attempt to write in plenty of more adult humor for the old fans, and not just the odd sex joke. The scenes where the secretary was on hold, the truly absurdly austere state of Krupp’s house and the odd reference and so on all gave me a laugh. They moved through their humor pretty effortlessly with snappy timing and even when they threw in the odd fart joke it wasn’t overdone or stupid. The characters were likable too and the writers did a good job of portraying them as they were in the books I was very pleasantly surprised and I hope the setup at the end of the movie with the talking toilets (which were probably my favorite villains from the series) actually comes to fruition with a sequel!
This got realised on my birthday, but I was in N.C. and couldn't go because there were no close by movie theaters, and I had a huge birthday party. I got to see it 3 months later though.
As someone who's read the books (and actually remembers them) the movie is a combination of the first four books, as it features the origin story (1st), the toilet army, (2nd), Captain Underpants' powers (3rd), and Professor Poopypants (4th).
There's mentions of other books as well with comic characters based off the teachers (Wedgie Woman & Sir Stinks A Lot were both referenced in this regard).
Very good review. I feel your review is a good source because you're someone who HASN'T read the books as a kid. I think the reason this movie got so much hype was because of how many read the books as a kid, myself included. Naturally I got my money's worth, the movie met every expectation, but if it could impress someone like yourself who doesn't know the appeal, then the staff did their jobs right. I feel your review has more merit because you haven't read the books. Glad to see the movie entertained you! :)
as a person who never read the books till later i had no connection either and agree with celly for the most part. i had a fun time watching this film.
@@goodjobeli The casting choices were spot on. Especially Greg, Rowley and Rodrick looked exactly like I imagined them when I read the books. No wonder #NotMyRodrick became a thing.
I'm not so sure. Diary of a Wimpy Kid has a much more grounded, observational tone than Captain Underpants, so it wouldn't really have worked in this format. I reckon something like Juno would work, except Greg is less likeable and more relatable than Juno.
Excellent breakdown on the movie even though I haven't seen it yet. I also liked your analysis on the execution as to why this worked while others didn't. Goes to show that execution is important in storytelling.
Captain Underpants had the best fourth wall humor in any children's series, ever, and Dav Pilkey really knows how to delay the punchline of a joke so the payoff has maximum impact. There's a moment in one of the books, I forget which one, where the narrator tells the audience that if they're offended by the extreme violence in the story (which is already a good joke on its own), they should immediately run screaming to the nearest shoe store, and then ask the employees to make you a cheeseburger. Something like a dozen chapters later, when Mr. Krupp shows up late to a conflict, Harold asks him "Where were you back in the previous chapter when we needed you?" and Mr. Krupp responds "I was at the shoe store ordering a cheeseburger." That's like fifteen levels of setup worth of jokes in two lines of dialogue.
One of my favourites, "Didn't he tell us how to work this?" "Yes, starting on the first line of the third paragraph in chapter 10 on page 76." "What did he say?" "I don't know, I'm not very good at remembering details"
I know right? It's almost like there's a big difference between a grown woman seeing a movie aimed at children by herself in a public place vs doing it in the privacy of her own home. ....Or something.
commander I am in full support of this. (Also here's something to make you feel old: in the 4th book where Jack and Annie travel to the future, they travel to 2013. To a moon base)
Phin68 I can get them for 6 if I go to a late showing, so some places do have tickets for low prices. I'm guessing you're in a location with a higher cost of living, though.
*Has read the first and second book.* Well, cool can't wait to see it if I ever do. I only read the first to books -there are tons more- I could never get into it. I loved the "flip-o-ramas" they had in the books.
The thing about this movie is that it’s animation isn’t trying to have Pixar quality, it’s really cartoonish and i love that. The voice actors are, as you said, actually acting. Dreamworks didn’t just search a celebrity with a similiar voice then (let’s say.. in the series/books), they actually found someone who could ACT. This movie gets a 11/10 from me, a dutch, idiotic 11 year old :)
Landon Legate Agreed! They should do a collab review for "The Emoji Movie". BTW, here's a good analogy for AniMat and CellSpex on their least favorite animation studios: AniMat is to Sony Pictures Animation as Illumination Entertainment is to CellSpex. I wouldn't say that CellSpex HATES Illumination; she just has a love-hate relationship with it and I kinda feel the same way with Illumination. Plus, I don't really see her hate on Sony Pictures Animation as much AniMat, just like how I hardly see the latter (AniMat) hate on Illumination. So, yeah, Illumination and Sony Pictures Animation are my least favorite animation studios, too, but I think Sony Pictures Animation is worse, though.
Mr. Kat alright. 1. Is Harold gay? 2. Does captain underpants still have powers? 3. How does poopy pants almost destroy the world? 4. What 2 pets that Harold and George own that sacrificed to save the universe? 5. Who defeats the gym teacher?
Just finished watching this movie. As someone who has read the books, this was a really well done adaptation of the books. Covers the first 4 novels while mixing up the elements on what made them stood out the most. This movie knew what it was, a light hearted comedic kids movie. It nailed the characters right to the core. It's a movie that doesn't take itself seriously (clearly especially from the title.) It was just very well done and I applaud Dream Works for actually making a great adaptation. Btw, loved your review. Wrote mine as I was watching yours. You just earned a sub c:
I grew up reading these books, and the movie was very true to the books. My favorite part was the "and it's not an egg salad sandwich" part, because in the first comic that George and Harold drew, they had the usual "it's a bird! It's a plane!" Superhero stuff, but there was also a subtle dog saying "it's an egg salad sandwich," which I couldn't help but smile at because it was such a minor, but funny, detail.
Captain Underpants and the Invasion of the Incredibly Naughty Cafeteria Ladies from Outer Space (and the Subsequent Assault of the Equally-Evil Lunchroom Zombie Nerds)?
Great review, CellSpex. This was one of the best animated films of 2017, with "The LEGO Batman Movie". This movie blew me away! One of the best animated movies to come from DreamWorks in a while. The animation is expressive, the voice actors do a good job of bringing their characters to life, the comedy is well-executed, and the movie uses different styles of animation, like hand-drawn animation and SOCK PUPPETS! The sock puppet scene was an unexpected surprise for me! The friendship and chemistry between George and Harold is genuine and heartwarming, with Kevin Hart being funny, but still subdued as George, and Thomas Middleditch playing off of each other well. The talented and funny Ed Helms (from "The Hangover", one of my favorite comedy movies and movies in general) has a blast playing the gruff Mr. Krupp and the dimwitted but cheerful Captain Underpants, and so does Nick Kroll as Professor Poopypants. Plus, Jordan Peele (director of the great "Get Out") is unrecognizable as Melvin. So, all in all, an enjoyable little animated flick by DreamWorks.
The books had better humour, I can remember a line where one guy said "I think back on page 64 paragraph 3 sentence 4 word 2 you said something like 'I think we should do this' but I'm not too good at remembering stuff, so I might be wrong." The fourth wall breaks were groundbreaking. Or should I say wallbreaking.
To these people, who seem to lack a certain level of word comprehension, "Not looking forward to it" basically translates to "I don't think it will be good." Which it can mean, though, depending on the tone of voice and such. But this is clearly not the case here... So I am not sure what those people were on about!
This is probably the best adaptation I’ve ever seen. When I think of captain underpants, I don’t just think of the books, I think of the movie too. They are basically the same to me.
One thing I love is the lighting, it always portrays the mood correctly and it's just perfect like the treehouse scenes, the warm lighting in the treehouse makes me feel warm inside and I love it.
Captain Underpants is what inspired me to write and draw my own comic books. When I saw that this movie was coming out, I was doubtful at first, but then I was hyped when I saw the Weird Al trailer. I was not disappointed when I saw the movie. I actually loved it. It was like seeing my childhood all over again. Now I want to watch it again.
Something that really made this movie work was also the animation. I can't stop praising movies like Hotel Transylvania, The Incredibles and such that manage to translate qualities of 2D animation into 3D to make it UNIQUE. And this movie really works it well, especialy with the slapstick.
RyoMiianPlayz she doesn't spoil anything that's not in the trailers, and talks more on it being a comedic success than taking about the plot or climax. I still have no idea what the threat that moves the plot is.
David Winzeler I actually just watched the movie today, and I really enjoyed it! Along with being nostalgic, it was pretty funny, had some good adult humor, and had some voice actors that I recognized. Overall I'd give the movie about a 7.1/10 not factoring in nostalgia, and a 8.3-8.4/10 with nostalgia.
This movie was made by people who understood the essence of the books. It’s a perfect adaptation which satisfies both fans and casual audiences which little to no effort.
I still read the captain underpants books, (wimpy, I know) and I can confirm that the movie is pretty loyal to the first book, except that I don’t believe that the lunch lady exists.
One thing I loved about the books was that they didn't take themselves seriously, looking back, that's honestly the most entertaining thing about them. I haven't seen this movie yet (and I honestly don't plan to) but it seems that the movie imitates that pretty well.
I read the books as a kid (and sometimes reread them still) so I excited for it! I love the animation, and I think the animation sticks out because it's not cartoon characters on realistic background, the entire theme of the movie was consistent and made it seem very fun and lively.
My favorite part is WEIRD AL SANG THE THEME!!!!!! I LISTEN TO WEIRD AL EVERYDAY!! Mostly my favorite ones called “I’ll be mellow when I’m dead”, “Trigger Happy”, and “Slime creatures from outer space”.
I remember when I was 9, and I would fling underwear around my house yelling “IM CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS!!!”, and “oh no!! Here we go again!!!” This movie brought back good memories.
I completely grew up with this series and the movie, despite me being scared that it would be messed up like most book movies are. I loved it and the exaggerated animation was so well designed for what it is
I love the little droplets and animated mood things, like tear droplets. I also love Kevin Hart’s appearance. Also, the voice actors are amazing. I was so surprised and agree completely with your review. I also love how kids movies have little adult inside jokes or references.
I thought is was really funny how when Professor Pooppy pants said that he isn't a supervillain but has a cage that can fit multiple people, opens a door with an axe, and also has a mace in his suitcase along with the cage the axe and a ton of other stuff.
There's a big difference between toilet humor and humor about toilets. Why this movie is funny is because the characters make up stuff that little boys really think is funny, but the movie doesn't have any investment in it being funny to anyone else. It just exists. The fact that the writers leave it alone, even if the characters don't because they wouldn't, that makes it funny. The movie isn't aware that it's funny.
The fall may not be as hard as we believe, it has a very small budget ($38 Million) and may are better internationally. Then again, I could be wrong. It did underperform last weekend, it was bad idea to release it against Wonder Woman.
I first read captain underpants in the 2nd grade when we were being forced to watch the live action yogi bear. The book series stuck with me all throughout school and when i heard this movie was coming out i literally told everyone in my contacts list how exited I was. My friend offered me to go see it with him even though he never read any of the books. And there I was... A fourteen year old in a theater full of kids and babies. I honestly loved the movie as much I thought I would, and I recommended it to all my friends who read the books alongside me, and they were not disappointing either!
This is my son's FAVOURITE movie. He loves all of the Dav Pilkey books. (Would love to see a Dogman movie) he's desperate for a sequel to this. It really is underrated
Jonathan Awot I mean, a lot of shows do this. Not just western either. I can't remember the last time a Japanese cartoon had a child voice a child character.
High 5 and thank you! I put this movie on my "I'll watch if I am near a theater and bored" movie list after watching your review. Today was that day - I even had the theater to my self and I enjoyed every minuet of it. I will watch it again when it is released on DVD. Also I think the writers watched Phineas and Ferb. Lastly I didn't know about the comic books until you mentioned this movie.
I grew up with the books and used to never be tired of reading them, and I still don't (CellSpex haters pull gun at me and wish I bloodily died and liked it). I was also excited unlike the majority, so we disliked your comments!

*"And now it's a grown man in his Underpants"*
*Turns out i had another comment with over 1k comments snd never noticed... Hmm.*
Thedogelord 7.8 too much underwear - IGN
Ivan Garcia Hoenn + Captain Underpants? Sign me up for that Nostalgia Bomb.
I read that comment JUST as she was saying it!
Lost Swiftpaw i read it the sam time she said it
*Oh look its a grown man without his underpants*
The Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies honestly should've been like this.
I don't think so its more better like it is but the 4th movie... please don't talk about
The wimpy kid movies (mainly the first one) were terrible but still good adaptations. Also they were my childhood.
Nah. Those deserve to die and stay dead, sorry dude
That's in the 3rd book before and after the first Flip-o-Rama.
Okay, that’s gold
One of my favourites,
"Didn't he tell us how to work this?"
"Yes, starting on the first line of the third paragraph in chapter 10 on page 76."
"What did he say?"
"I don't know, I'm not very good at remembering details"
*Feels weird about seeing a movie with a guy in underpants*
*Fine about seeing ponies talk to each other*
I know right? It's almost like there's a big difference between a grown woman seeing a movie aimed at children by herself in a public place vs doing it in the privacy of her own home. ....Or something.
also talking animals is a lot more normal for animation than half-naked people
Really not seeing the comparison...
Okay i like her channel but you have a point.
...Nick's got a point... 🤔
I fucking loved Captain Underpants and I'm glad it got a movie that obviously appreciated the source material.
now do magic treehouse plz
i second this
commander There's a Magic treehouse movie?
Nah, there's an anime movie, but I meant another animation studio should revive an older children's book series like this.
commander Oh
commander I am in full support of this. (Also here's something to make you feel old: in the 4th book where Jack and Annie travel to the future, they travel to 2013. To a moon base)
this is my favorite manga of all time and the anime was so amazing best anime of 2017.

*Has read the first and second book.* Well, cool can't wait to see it if I ever do. I only read the first to books -there are tons more- I could never get into it. I loved the "flip-o-ramas" they had in the books.
Film actually uses Flip-O-Rama for one of it's Fight Scenes, so enjoy!
ThornsOfSerenity Flip-O-Rama doesn't work in the movie.
That one joke about teachers' salaries was the funniest thing I heard in a movie that year.
Cellspex should collab with Animat and do a review on The Emoji Movie.
Yeah, I really want Cell and Animat to do a video together
I remembered these books as a child. I loved them
b*tch I read it in till the last comic and I was eleven when it came out. Try GROWING UP WITH THE BOOKS!
Mr. Kat alright. 1. Is Harold gay? 2. Does captain underpants still have powers? 3. How does poopy pants almost destroy the world? 4. What 2 pets that Harold and George own that sacrificed to save the universe? 5. Who defeats the gym teacher?
my cousin use to read them
You're right, the books do not overly rely on the bathroom humour either. The comedy is very clever.
It's not an egg salad sandwich
10/10
AND GUESS WHART *I ' M R O T T E N*
Inspector Carmelita Fox: “I’ll get you, Stinky Sandwich, along with that thieving raccoon”.
Weird Al is always a 10/10.
^_^
I grew up reading these books, and the movie was very true to the books. My favorite part was the "and it's not an egg salad sandwich" part, because in the first comic that George and Harold drew, they had the usual "it's a bird! It's a plane!" Superhero stuff, but there was also a subtle dog saying "it's an egg salad sandwich," which I couldn't help but smile at because it was such a minor, but funny, detail.
I love the 2d tiger joke. It just adds so much more to that joke than if it was fully animated in 3d.
My grandma went to see this with us and she actually laughed so much that she bought the dvd (or something like that) to watch it at home!
Wait... Captain Underpants is a grown man? O.o
I never read any of the comics, only ever saw pictures of him so I just assumed he was a big kid. xD

I'm just waiting to see an Emoji Movie review. By the way, Rotten Tomatoes says it's worse than Norm of the North.
Have fun with that knowledge!
Takemi Corrado Emoji Movie is worse than Norm of the North is worse than strange magic
The books had better humour, I can remember a line where one guy said "I think back on page 64 paragraph 3 sentence 4 word 2 you said something like 'I think we should do this' but I'm not too good at remembering stuff, so I might be wrong."
The fourth wall breaks were groundbreaking.
I can't wait for Cellspex to name The Emoji Movie the worst animated movie of 2017.
You spelled "best" wrong.
Jonah Youngkin The Emoji Movie in my opinion will be the worst of 2017, and I predict it will be Cells worst too.
Jonah Youngkin he might have spelled best wrong, but he spelled worst right.
I like the theme song :P
"But pffff who cares? These 2 are in bubbles"
Love it
Captain Underpants is what inspired me to write and draw my own comic books. When I saw that this movie was coming out, I was doubtful at first, but then I was hyped when I saw the Weird Al trailer. I was not disappointed when I saw the movie. I actually loved it. It was like seeing my childhood all over again. Now I want to watch it again.
I liked captain underpants, 50% because of nostalgia and 50% because of the creativity and real effort that went into making it.
This was pretty good
Something that really made this movie work was also the animation. I can't stop praising movies like Hotel Transylvania, The Incredibles and such that manage to translate qualities of 2D animation into 3D to make it UNIQUE. And this movie really works it well, especialy with the slapstick.
I'm conflicted, I want to watch this review, but I haven't seen the movie yet.
What should I do?
RyoMiianPlayz There r no spoilers in this review, but it does show a lot of clips from the movie. I suggest you watch the movie first.
RyoMiianPlayz she doesn't spoil anything that's not in the trailers, and talks more on it being a comedic success than taking about the plot or climax. I still have no idea what the threat that moves the plot is.
RyoMiianPlayz just watch the movie anyway
David Winzeler I actually just watched the movie today, and I really enjoyed it! Along with being nostalgic, it was pretty funny, had some good adult humor, and had some voice actors that I recognized. Overall I'd give the movie about a 7.1/10 not factoring in nostalgia, and a 8.3-8.4/10 with nostalgia.
watch all the trailers first, everything in the video is in one of the movie trailers
This movie was made by people who understood the essence of the books. It’s a perfect adaptation which satisfies both fans and casual audiences which little to no effort.
*reads the title CANT WAIT*
It's impressive how smoothly they were able to translate the story into 3D.
*_KEVIN HART SOUNDS WAY YOUNGER IN THIS MOVIE_*
Is boss baby captain underpants???
Is Mabel Pines the lunch lady?
Let's think
komodoking175 No the Boss Baby is actually the villain Doctor Diaper . . . read the manga.
You mean book?
HiMyNameIsWeirdo That's the joke.
Dafuq you thinking about?
You get to feel like a kid for once. Isn't that just great. Those kids are real heroes, just by bringing a smile to the world. Uranus!!
I'm happy the animation is not as cartoony as Sony Pictures Animation films like Cloudy With A Chance This Sucks and Hotel Transylfailya.
but those movies were good
Jonah Youngkin I respect your opinion if you like them, but I hate those movies.
Landon Legate hotel transylvania might not have the best animation but it did last longer than invader zim did. HEYOOOOOO!
the summary is right
the villain is different
how they got the ring is different
and the punishment is different
The worst part is Kevin hart trying to voice a 10 year old child
iiceicebby He did a decent job
Well duh, any of Kids Show with Adult Voices like KND, Billy & Mandy, PPG, FOP, and etc.
Also, the theme slaps
I remember when I was 9, and I would fling underwear around my house yelling “IM CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS!!!”, and “oh no!! Here we go again!!!” This movie brought back good memories.
I completely grew up with this series and the movie, despite me being scared that it would be messed up like most book movies are. I loved it and the exaggerated animation was so well designed for what it is
My brother is obsessed with this movie. As of July 11th, 2019, he’s seen it 11 times

Sewage Plant Field Trips Are Today.
You are absolutely right. Because a friend who did like the books rope me into watching this and I was surprised
She strangely sounds like let me explain studios...
Cars 3 comes out before Despicable Me 3 so maybe the joke should been about that.
2:05 the cat in the hat is a blessing and you know it
I thought the movie was gonna be a big failure
Roman AV
It kinda of is, look at the Box Office. I know you are talking about quality, but it's failing.
The fall may not be as hard as we believe, it has a very small budget ($38 Million) and may are better internationally.
Then again, I could be wrong. It did underperform last weekend, it was bad idea to release it against Wonder Woman.
They got weird al. How the hell will it be a flop if you have talents like that.
Axcicos
It can flop if it comes out the same day as Wonder Woman.
JG Perez well it didnt
*oml idk if it did so pls dont hurt meh*
This is a movie that’s basically
“Fuck it I gotta do something on a Friday night”
I like you don’t even have to read the books to understand or like the movie
I first read captain underpants in the 2nd grade when we were being forced to watch the live action yogi bear. The book series stuck with me all throughout school and when i heard this movie was coming out i literally told everyone in my contacts list how exited I was. My friend offered me to go see it with him even though he never read any of the books. And there I was... A fourteen year old in a theater full of kids and babies. I honestly loved the movie as much I thought I would, and I recommended it to all my friends who read the books alongside me, and they were not disappointing either!
I'm just waiting for The Emoji Movie review...
This is my son's FAVOURITE movie. He loves all of the Dav Pilkey books. (Would love to see a Dogman movie) he's desperate for a sequel to this. It really is underrated
last time I was this early
TH-cam didn't even exist
If I’m being honest here I really want them to make a Captain underpants 2
can't get past the fact that they didn't hire child actors.
Jonathan Awot (it's because children don't do good voice acting work in lead roles.)
Jonathan Awot I mean, a lot of shows do this. Not just western either. I can't remember the last time a Japanese cartoon had a child voice a child character.
Tiger Festivals I grew up with these books. I always pictured them to have kid voices.
As a long time fan of the series I felt like both voices fit perfectly to their character
Lastly I didn't know about the comic books until you mentioned this movie.
i just didnt like the fact that they used celebratory voices for kids but yeah :p
the scene with sock puppets is SO AMAZING
Finally someone else who didn't grow up with the books and therefore wasn't as excited as the majority.

I grew up with the books and used to never be tired of reading them, and I still don't (CellSpex haters pull gun at me and wish I bloodily died and liked it). I was also excited unlike the majority, so we disliked your comments!
Fun Fact: Harold at the end of the books is actually revealed to be Gay
was Dav Pilkey just J.K rolling all along

Denzy why?
EH Miguel it's never as good
that's not always true. There are many examples where the Anime is better.
