    What did you think of Tangled The Series?

    • @myriadmediamusings
      @myriadmediamusings 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      While I'm alright with the series, what had me excited was Disney going back to making GOOD shows or continuations of their animated movies, not letting their characters or worlds or stories to be told go to waste. I loved how they did it good with Aladdin and Lilo and Stich, loved how they did it with Tangled and Big Hero 6, and await how they'll do it with Princess and the Frog and Zootopia.
      I hope they may also consider Raya and the Last Dragon and Encanto in the future.

    One more thing NC didn't address was that I'm pretty sure that every voice actor from the movie reprised their role for the series. Flynn and Rapunzel were both voiced by Zach Levi and Mandy Moore. You Don't usually see that in a TV series adaptation of a movie.

    • @yoursonisold8743
      @yoursonisold8743 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      What I find the most confusing is that Mandy Moore's performance was _way_ better in the show than it was in the movie. I dont know if it was due to the time gap between the releases or because she got better direction, but her voice acting improved by bounds. Similarly I also thought Eugene had so much more depth to his delivery going well along with his character growth in general.

      And Cassandra is voiced by the lady who played Idina Menzel's famous Broadway roles on the other side of the country, Eden Espinosa! Did you know Alan Menken actually wrote the songs for the series too?! Most of the sequels from the 2000s didn’t have him or other big screen composers writing the songs, which is why so many sequel songs pale in comparison to the original movies’ soundtracks.

    While I agree that season 1 drags (Kind of like Clone Wars...)
    Queen For A Day is literally huge character development for Rapunzel as she has to make a decision between keeping a promise (which she NEVER breaks) to a friend and protecting her kingdom. I believe this carries over to season 2 with how she becomes more decisive, to the point of ignoring others' advice believing she knows best how to protect everyone. And the consequences of this bear out in what happens at the end of season 2.

    • @randomgeek95
      @randomgeek95 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I never actually thought of that during season 2. It makes sense to why she would ignores Cassandra's plea to help back at the Great Tree because she didn't want her friends to get hurt due to her indecisiveness. Unfortunately, that didn't go so well. I only wish Rapunzel would've explained that to Cassandra instead of just saying that Cass should've been honest to how she felt, making Rapunzel herself 'innocent.' While that's true, but it's also Rapunzel's fault for not being there for Cass to begin with, especially after what happened at the Great Tree. I went on a little bit too far, but what I'm saying is that your point with what happened on Queen's Day makes sense as second season went on. I just wished they explored that more and how much it cost Rapunzel's character.

      I will admit that - Clone Wars dragged a *lot* longer than Tangled did
      I should NOT have taken Lucas *that fucking long* to make Jedi and Clones fight evil droids an interesting and mature concept but - dear GOD did he take a long damn time to make Jedi and Clones fighting evil droids an interesting concept...
      Ironically the interesting part of the concept was NOT focusing on the Jedi and Clones fighting the evil droids xD seriously, the bounty hunter episodes - the nightsisters - the original introduction of the Mandalorians - making Ahsoka TOLERABLE (amazing that ANYONE could achieve that... ... ... I blame her continued use of R2y and 'Sky-Guy' for it taking me so long to warm up to her...) it all HAPPENED

    The first season for most of the Disney show of this era have the characters stick in a static location.
    Amphibia, Owl Hoise, etc
    They all start off in one set location and build the world from one location while occasionally traveling outwards. They do have explanations for why they can’t go beyond the tutorial.
    Amphibia, mountains are enclosed on the town.
    Owl House, Luz main goal is learning magic.
    Granted, they do a better job at giving off an interesting stories within their respective seasons along with progression.
    Amphibia season 1 - Introduces Sasha, and the road army
    Owl House Season 1 - Eda’s curse gets progressively worst, leading to her arrest.
    Heck, Tangled season 1 has a plotline involving Varian becoming desperate attempts to free save his loved ones.

A blizzard threatening genocide on Corona, the king and queen almost dying, Pascal who I thought actually died, Varian’s dad getting encased in amber and his fate left up in the air, and then Varian crying over his seemingly dead father and then turning to the dark side and vowing revenge on Rapunzel. To seeing a quirky, innocent, and kindhearted boy turn into a dark twisted villain is one of the darkest concepts I’ve ever seen. It reminded me of Anakin Skywalker turning into Darth Vader or Walter White becoming Heisenberg. Strangely that ending officially made Varian my favorite character in not only the show, but in all of Disney. “Queen For a Day” is without a doubt in my opinion the greatest episode of Tangled the Series.

    One thing that I feel really made this series great aside from the writing and the music would have to be the dynamic and relational development between Rapunzel and Eugene. I love how we get to see them grow more as an actual loving and supporting couple. For me they are probably the best Disney couple because of how much time was put into their characters and it feels real and authentic than the traditional “love at first sight” cliche. The moments when it’s just the two of them feel so natural and cute but maybe sometimes stressful or frustrating just like any couple would act.

      And I love that Eugene tells his best friend, throughout the series, to NOT be like most stereotypical guys and keep going after a woman if they say no. He literally tells Lance this so many times like "Bro, she's (Adira) not interested in you. STOP trying with her."
      Yeah, eventually Adira welcomes some of Lance's behavior, but she still rolls her eyes at him when he tells her any type of romantic remarks. So obviously his behavior just annoys her less, and she still doesn't have any type of romantic feelings for him LOL
      But yeah, Eugene is not like most guys that would push marriage and going fast in a relationship. He's patient with Rapunzel, and yeah he wants to marry her, but he does wait a long time in between asking her. In the entire series, which takes place over 2 years, he asks her less than 5 times. I think there are only four proposal plans in the entire show, and one of them is from Rapunzel. I love that!! I love that expectation subversion, and when Rapunzel is ready, she's the one that wants to ask. Plus, Eugene even jokes about it! "Whose turn is it to propose again?" He totally loves that she can take charge, and that she does take charge in their relationship, most of the time.
      And I think a lot of that also has to do with Rapunzel never really having much control in her life until after the events of the movie. Eugene knows this, so he gives her full control in the relationship, which is really sweet and honorable of him to do.

The original target audience couldn't handle the darker tone the show develops, mostly because they were too young for it. Yes, although her villain arc was not the best, I mean, blame Rapunzel for taking Ghotel away from her, when she was technically kidnapped? In addition to being so redundant, at one point it seems that the conflict is resolved only to return to the same thing, plus she doesn't do anything interesting and that she had a power and I think they didn't know how to handle her villainous arc

    Good review. I was really nervous about this one, and was glad to see a thumbs-up.
    I feel like the issue with the finale isn't that it's too "Predictable", it's that it rushes things too much. The episode should have placed its focus on the Rapunzel/Cassandra relationship, but there's too much filler in the first part, and that means that the emotional highlights come across a little bit unearned. But it was still a satisfying finale IMO...

    • @timwoods2852
      @timwoods2852 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree, but would add/counter(?) that all the filler and rushing was what took away any chance for anything extra. Be it Rapunzel and Cassandra's friendship, or a surprise twist like Rapunzel getting to keep her powers, but being able to tuck them away. We were given only the bare minimum in a show that loved going above and beyond with expectations.

    • @Rtotalmagic
      @Rtotalmagic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@timwoods2852 I feel like Rapunzel cutting off her hair was the best bit of the finale - one of those moments that's wonderfully exciting in the moment whilst feeling totally obvious in hindsight. But I do agree that they adopted the "bare minimum" approach for Rapunzel and Cassandra's reconciliation, which is a particular issue for the latter (I have a worried feeling that Doug's "The Finale was too safe" translates to "I wanted Cassandra to stay a villain and/or die")

    • @ccggenius
      @ccggenius 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My biggest complaint is that for a long time it felt like they were hinting that Eugene and Cassandra were long lost siblings, but then they abruptly decided to shoehorn Gothel back into the series to give her some half-hearted direct tie to Rapunzel, and oh yeah, that crazy hermit lady is ALSO the member of a large secret organization dedicated to the revival of an unspeakable evil, because SHOEHORN. It's also heavily implied that the two ancient mages were romantically involved, but that thread goes nowhere and instead the BBEG is vanquished by making sure the protagonist doesn't have to sacrifice anything.

    • @Rtotalmagic
      @Rtotalmagic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ccggenius I understand why many fans rolled their eyes at the idea of Cassandra being Gothel's abandoned biological daughter, and Gothel being part of the Zhan Tiri cult, but I like the idea of Gothel's toxic legacy fuelling all four main sources of conflict in the show. The issue is delivery - Cassandra's resentments over being abandoned are pushed too hard in a way that too often comes across as implausible and victim blamey (not great when you are trying to make a sympathetic villain who audiences are supposed to relate to on some level) and Gothel's links to ZT are barely elaborated on at all, even though they are genuinely interesting and easier to explain than a lot of things on the show...

    While I get there isn't much plot moving elements in season one, it at least felt like Avatar to me, where it is used to build up the characters, dipping their toes before going in to the meaty stuff. It filled my expectations, the focus of Rapunzel this time trying to understand the "world" of Corona. The "don't hate me" story and the Varian stories IMO were significant character focus episodes that should at least be watched. "Queen for a Day" however pushed the boundary that the show may be more than an entertaining movie to TV adaptation and what's more shocking is that it's in a Disney Princess property where you would think they won't go to that "dark" direction.

  • @mas8705

    While I didn’t see the show fully, I remember how so many people made such a big deal about Wither and Decay. The song Rapunzel sings and how it feels like a twisted and dark version of the one we heard in the film. This whole idea of a song that literally causes everything to slowly die around her and I thought, “Damn it Dark Disney… I missed you. Please don’t leave.”
    And how it was later used to actually show the good it can do in spite of her almost losing herself again. It is small things like that that actually make me think that they did have a good road map for what they wanted to do with this series (after the slow start of season 1).

Even the first season did a great job of developing the characters and relationships within Corona before getting the plot rolling for real (except Hook Foot, who didn't get much development until his two centric episodes in Season 2).

    I love this show so much. I'm currently actually doing my second watch through so you can imagine how funny I found it to see this come up on my notifications. I definitely agree that season 1 is the weakest of the three, but I think that's because they had so much to set up for the main adventure plot that they needed some time to do it so the continuation could be even better. Plus I also think that they wanted to at least establish what Rapunzel would be like in her real home and who the people in that world are, since that's something fans of the movie would speculate on. And this is one of the rare times that I can say that I'm glad it only got three seasons. As much as I love this show, I won't deny that it had the exact right amount of runtime. They told the story they wanted to and stopped. They didn't try to create a new plot out of thin air and force out a season 4 when there didn't need to be one. They ended it when they should have and made the extra effort to make sure it fit with the wedding short that was released beforehand. Rapunzel was already my favorite Disney Princess going in, but this series solidified her position beyond a doubt. I don't say this often these days, but well done Disney.

      I agree. Season 1 is the weakest but it was necessarily to have these connections made. Rapunzel was now the princess of the kingdom and not just some random dancing girl. With that I do get why the king was kind of a hard ass. He just got his long lost daughter back and was in fear that her adventurous nature would rip her from his life again and permanently at that.

    I agree that the first season had more lackluster episodes than the others, but I still think its latter half was pretty good. I found Varian's arc to be interesting and relatable. Also the fact that his descent to being a villain was sort of Rapunzel's fault, unintentionally of course, and I thought that was an interesting dynamic, especially when you consider the fact that he still resented her after his defeat and the season didn't end with him suddenly forgiving her.

    I agree wholeheartedly. I really didn't like how slow season 1 was. The most important stuff was with Varian, and you still rarely see him in season 1 unless it's for the important plot points. Upon rewatching the series, I skipped most of season 1 and only watched the stuff with Varian, cuz he's the one that furthered the story in season 1. There are some skippable episodes in season 2, especially when they're on the deserted island and the episodes that focus on Hookfoot (sorry, Hookfoot xD)... apparently they had a lot more planned for Varian, and I really wanted them to do more with him. Disney snubbed him, even though he was one of the best characters. You can tell I'm a Varian lover LOL
    But I absolutely LOVE Cassandra. I'm in the group that predicted her major Season 2/3 spoiler, and it honestly made me SO happy to see them go that route!!
    The art style took a while for me to get used to, but it's also based off her paintings in the movie. It has that brush stroke look, and I've grown to love it and even adopt some of the art style into my own art.
    Eugene and Raps had great character growth. Lance is just hilarious. Cass and Varian are my favorite characters in the entire franchise. And yes, I call her a Badass in Waiting, too LMAO
    Overall an amazing series!! I rewatch it all the time!
    EDIT: Apparently it was Chris Sonnenburg, the creator of the show, that snubbed Varian in Season 2. He didn't like Varian as a character, for some reason. He wasn't even planning on bringing Varian back in Season 3, but he did so because the fans were basically at his throat, demanding they bring him back and give him a redemption arc. The show did great things with Cassandra, but the writers could've made a few things in Season 2 make much more sense if they'd let Varian go with them.

    I know this might sound kind of silly, but I really, REALLY hope Doug reviews Sofia the First at some point. Despite it being targeted at much younger kids, it's actually a lot like Tangled the Series in that it starts off pretty mundane and eventually builds into a grand adventure with lovable characters and creative plot elements. Plus there are a TON of classic Disney character cameos, so anyone who's a Disney fan in general will probably get some enjoyment out of it.

    I will defend Season 1 a little and say it functions more like a sequel to the original movie. Her father keeping her within the kingdom was EXACTLY the same thing Gothel did, but her Slice of Life adventures help prove to her father that she IS capable of venturing out on her own and handling things.
    I like to appreciate Season 1 for what it is, even if it can drag a bit.

    I think the first season of animated series that end up really good are the seasons that were created just to sell their idea to the higher ups so they can get the ball running before they can show what they really want to show. Adventure Time, Star VS, Steven Universe, and even Star Wars The Clone Wars all start off like this

  • @timwoods2852

    Exactly! Despite season 1 being a bit of a slog until near its end, everything is important! That minor character they introduced? Turns out they have a secret past that gives them access to lore and valuable information. And they do waggle the carrot of mystery and adventure now and then, sort of to say, "This is the calming breath before all Hell breaks loose."

    Usually, on the Hero's Journey story telling technique, the "Hero" makes friends along the way.
    But it's very rare, extremely rare, that the "hero" loses friends, not just loses them, they turn against him, not by a spell or brainwashing shenanigans. But because they clearly oppose what the hero decides to do.
    In this show, Rapunzel has to make some choices that completely turns some friends against her. This show is "hard choices" the show. I applaud it.

    This and the Ducktales reboot were my two favorite Disney shows during their runs and I'm glad Doug was patient enough to see just how good this show got. Yeah it started off very kid friendly but when it got dark Holy Shit it got dark.
    SPOILER
    When Cassandra went bad at the end of season 2 I let out a huge gasp because I legit didn't see it coming even though you saw them fight a good chunk of season 2 and the fact they kept her bad up until the end of season 3 was a pretty bold choice even though you knew she would eventually reform.
    And I just got to say Zan Turi has got to be one of the best Disney villains I have seen in a while. She was terrifying, sadistic and just plain creepy. I wish the movies would go back to using these type of villains.
    If I had one complaint is that season 3 was cut a bit short but I did here it was because of the pandemic, which I get but I will always be curious about what else we could have seen if they would have been allowed to make all the episodes they were planning.

      Did you like the reasoning behind her going bad? Or anything regarding her? How is she able to use the moonstone without losing a limp? Why did Gothel had a daughter? What was Cassandra's plan? Why did they copy paster Varian's arc?

    • @jefferybaker6866
      @jefferybaker6866 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Raximus3000 honestly the reason for her going bad was better than Varian's. Varian was just angry that Rapunzel couldn't save his dad while ignoring the fact she was trying to deal with a out of control storm and couldn't handle both at the same time.
      Cassandra on the other hand found out that she was the birth daughter of a evil witch who chose Rapunzel over her. That would mentally destroy anyone, especially with them already on fragile ground. So I wouldn't really say their arc was copy and paste like you are suggesting.
      Can't explain the moon stone question but it did look like her limbs became part of the moonstone once she formed with it since they became the same color as the stone.
      Lastly I will say Cassandra I kinda liked her better as a villain than a hero. Even though I knew she would reform I almost didn't want her too because she was great as a villain unlike Varian. She was actually intimidating and scary.

      Varian was left alone and betrayed if you recall they did not even bother to look at what happen to him after the crisis ended, while the smartest thing would have been to ask him for help and 'cut a deal' to help him if he helps them.
      Cassandra did not even remember Gothel was her 'mother' she effectively gave up every connection she had and her life for a power she did not have an actual use for... Her motive make little sense and she does not even question them, nobdy even asks her 'you think the most selfish woman is history cared two bits about you? Or that she is worth betraying your father who cared about you?' Her motive is blown out of proportion to the point that she looks dumb.
      Lastly, i wanted to waste her so much with a keyblade that i could feel anything more about her, Varian was smth to look forward to but his 'redemption' was rushed.

    • @jefferybaker6866
      @jefferybaker6866 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Raximus3000 yeah Varian's redemption was a bit rushed. It should have been a mini story arc in season 3 but they focused solely on Cassandra's arc.
      Yeah Varian was given a pretty raw deal especially being just a kid. That being said I still like Cassandra better as a villain. Just my own opinion.

    I liked the whole thing with her father keeping her locked up.
    They connected it well to how Gothel treated her, though her father is doing it to genuinely protect instead of just keeping power for himself, it still hurts Rapunzel.
    It also gives us a chance to know the characters and have a build up to the good stuff rather than just being thrown right in to it.
    Plus yknow, kids show. Gotta have those random moral and social lesson episodes lmao
    And sure a lot of his decisions and secrets are dumb, but they were decisions made in desperation of trying to keep his family safe, and to keep what hes done a secret because of shame
    Hes always haunted by what happened with Rapunzel as a baby and he just cant handle losing her again, and cant see the strong woman she is for a long time, they absolutely needed this sort of slow build up where she stays with her parents and actually gets a relationship with them.

    Your review is good, but I really have to disagree with you about seasons one and two, because in my honest opinion season one was the best season in the show, while season two is probably one of the most boring seasons of any show I have ever seen. While I do agree season one does have a lot filler I do believe the filler incorporates itself into the plot much better than season two. For example episodes like "Fitzherbert P.I." shows us how Eugene learns to adjust to a new life without crime, while "Big Brothers of Corona" has Eugene try to stop two young thieves from going down the same path he did. While episodes like "Rapunzel's Enemy" and "Challenge of the Brave" had to do with Rapunzel learning how to interact with people and form new relationships. The filler for season one was there to help the main characters learn how to cope with new lives they have never experienced before.
    Season two, however, with the exceptions of episodes like "Beyond the Corona Walls", "Rapunzel and the Great Tree", "Rapunzel: Day One", "Freebird", Forest of No Return", Keeper of the Spire", "Rapunzeltopia","Lost and Found", and "Destinies Collide". every other episode in season 2 has nothing to do with the plot, nor do they ever become relevant or contribute to the plot in any way in season 3. We spend a total of three episodes in Vardaros, yet we never go back to this location again in season 3. We spend a total of three episodes in the shell house, yet we never go back to this location again in season 3. We spend three episodes on a leaf island, and while we do return to this location in season three, I do not see why we had to spend three episodes on this island if we only come back to it once in season 3. Wouldn’t it have been more interesting that instead of spending three episodes in these locations maybe we could have visited the lost city of Saporia and learned more about their culture, or maybe visit the other seven kingdoms, or meet other brotherhood members and learn more about the dark kingdom? Or maybe while in the shell house instead of wasting it on a clone episode or a babysitting episode we could have learned more about zan tiri’s past and gothel’s connection to her. Another problem in season 2 is that a lot of characters’ arcs kind of abruptly stop in season 2. Lance is just there as comic relief, there are not that many episodes of Rapunzel learning how to deal with people, Cassandra goes from wanting to make her father proud to and wanting to be captain of the guard to wanting to feel needed very abruptly. And Eugene who was the main character of the movie hardly gets any kind of arc in season 2 sure he gets focused on in the beginning with the Baron coming in and the end with the ravel of his parentage, but everything in between hardly has anything to do with that. Wouldn’t have been so much more interesting that instead of the Baron disappearing he became a recurring villain and we got to learn more about Eugene's past with him. Also, they gave a bigger role to hookfoot for some reason even though he contributes nothing to the plot. Also, it was also very odd that they completely wrote out Varian in season two even though he was a fan favorite and a big reason why many people started to watch the show. You would think Disney would want to capitalize on such a popular character.
    Honestly, season 2 was such a mess if it were not for the moon cass twist I would have dropped the show.
