This was very informative, especially getting to know all the research on this in a succinct and organized fashion. The only thing I am curious about is if breastfed babies get probiotics through their mothers and if yes then what can breastfeeding mothers do to ensure their milk contains diverse good bacteria? Thank you! Really appreciate your expert opinion😊

Yes human milk contains multiple strains of probiotics that transfer to the infant. I haven’t seen any specific studies showing the benefit of a certain intervention on the moms part to diversify the probiotics in her milk. Will update if I find anything though!!

I gave my baby probiotic biogaia and used it for two weeks as adviced by my pediatrician. After that he has been having bad constipation. What should I do to help him. He is turning six months old by the end of this June.

It’s unlikely the constipation is from the probiotic. I’d look for other changes, has he started solids? If so common to see changes in stooling pattern at that time. If so you can try giving fruits with high fiber, like puréed prunes or pears. If there’s truly been no other changes you can try discontinuing the probiotic as well and see if it helps. Talk with your clinician if no improvement noted or your baby seems really uncomfortable. Hope that helps!

Hi doc… He hasn’t started solids yet but he is taking calcium supplements and recently finished his zinc supplements. Could the supplements be the course of constipation please?

@@velmasongole1892 sometimes calcium supplements can contribute to constipation but it should not be stopped without talking to your child’s clinician because sometimes the supplement is needed and other interventions can be done to help with the constipation

Hello Dr! Thanks for this informative video.
My baby is currently one and half months old. I was given antibiotics during my vaginal birth. My baby seemed fine for the first two weeks. After that he started spitting up a lot. Most of the time he is in discomfort while awake.
My first son also had severe acid reflux. I did try simethicon and Nexium. It didn't work for him. So i am sceptical to try this for my new baby.
I started biogaia probiotic drops a week back. His night sleep has gotten better. But still he fusses a lot while awake. Spit up seems worse one day and better another day. Also he is passing little stool around 7 times and big stool 3 -5 times a day. My pediatrician recommended probiotic drops for 5 days. Can i continue giving it for long time? Or should i stop if it seems to work well?
Note: I am exclusively breastfeeding my baby.

I started my one month old breast feed baby on the Gerber sooth because she seemed gassy and omg!! Big mistake. She's had colic for 2 days. It's miserable. My poor little one is so exhausted from gas and crying. We stopped use right away and today she had actually slept longer than an hour.

Poor thing! Side effects aren't common with probiotics but they affect everyone differently so I'm so glad you found what was triggering her colic and she's feeling better now!
