    Clicking "gameplay" on the timeline and hearing "suck it" is just too good

    Pat really doesn't seem to understand the idea of a character having partial or limited control over reality.
    It's obvious in AoT, but Pat didn't watch that so maybe it makes sense for him not go get it, but haivng watched pats playthrough of Alan Wake 1, it is EXTREMELY clear that the phrase "Alan won because he was predestined to win" is completely wrong.
    Alan didn't write all of reality. He wrote a script for himself to follow that made winning _possible_
    It didn't make it impossible for him to fuck it up, or for The Darkness to get lucky and kill him.
    He wrote himself _a chance_
    Not a completely infallible predetermined endpoint.
    Pat doesn't get this.
    This couldn't be clearer than when Pat is asking questions like "Alan, why did you write yourself getting attacked by a big monster?" or "Alan, why did you write yourself falling out of the helicopter?"
    He didn't, Pat.
    Alan doesn't control The Darkness's actions. The Darkness is actively figting against his attempts to write a way out of this problem, and during some parts of the story, _it's winning_
    He also didn't create the people of Bright Springs or completely subsume their free-will.
    The closest to that seems to be Tom writing The Lady of The Lamp. A woman given a role in the story that she grew to resent over the years, and who seems happy to give it up by the end.
    But it's still not clear if he forced her to stay the course, or if she was aware that the world would end if she didn't fulfil her role, and so went through with it willingly.
    At the very least, she had enough free will left to shit-talk him.
    She didn't seem to hate her role as the keeper of The Brightly Lit Room. She was just scared and tired.

      Alan even explicitly talks about how he can't just write himself out of the situation at the beginning of the game: because he's writing within a genre he has to stay with tropes that fit the genre and will make for believable fiction. A book where he effortlessly saves his wife and defeats The Dark Presence is a boring and shitty book: he has to include struggles, loss and tragedy. The story he writes for The Dark Presence has to maintain verisimilitude enough for The Dark Presence to not fuck him up while still allowing him a chance to succeed.

      The thing is Pat has a fixation on his made up plot point that Allan is a terrible writer, so instead of the fact that Alan has limited control, in Pat’s brain, everything bad that happens validates the fact Allan is this awful writer, every time Pat ask’s “why did you write it this way” it’s him pointing out this could have been a much easier but Allan is crap writer despite the fact the game clearly tells you Allan is forced to write in a curtain trope heavy style in order for it to work.

    I believe this was streamed before Pat had the on-screen revelaiton during a CSB recording about how writing (and other creative works) is just kind of hard, which is why I'm not quite annoyed about him ragging on Alan not being able to write himself out of the situation.

      I think he doesn't fully understand that we need our hero to struggle in stories for us to enjoy it. It's not that alan is a bad writer; it's more that he's being forced to be a perfectionist when something will actively mess with his story.
      If there's any doubt about how to interpret the story it gives way to a sequel where scratch can win and come back. He never knows how he's going to escape

    Pat running away from lore conversations that are *literally* backstory for AW2 is absolutely maddening.

    At the end when Pat menions SMT V is overly drawn out...like, that's true but it's also the best paced SMT game I've played so...
    They reallg just have to release SMT4 and the Raidou Kuzunoha games to give people a better foundation for the series.

    • @rearedlogarithm
      @rearedlogarithm ปีที่แล้ว

      SMT V has good pacing but the story is so barebones that it feels like almost nothing has happened. The game feels like all of the other characters are having intense story moments while Nahobimbo is just kind of himboing their way through the world and acting as the final boss the other characters can't overcome.
      I still love the game though, it's very fun. You are totally right that they need to re-release the other SMT games, especially Kuzunoha Raidou.

    • @AntiNihilist
      @AntiNihilist ปีที่แล้ว

      @parasectx isn't SMT V'S story more or less the same as 3 and 4? I've played half of 3 and it seems the same. Admittedly I'd love to play the Raidou games but I guess emulation is the only real option.

    The sequel that they now pretend doesn't exist because it gave Alan a satisfying end to his story.

      The narrator explicitly questions at the end whether Alan and Alice's reunion is real or just a dream or a memory, or a glimpse of what is to come. In that light, it's not remotely weird that it turned out he was in fact still in the Dark Place.
      And I wouldn't really call this satisfactory, either - Alice just sort of appears at the end out of nowhere and accepts that the two are together. It really does lend itself more to being a false hope on Alan's part.

      They all but say that it happened in Alan Wake 2, and this would have been far from satisfying as an ending. "Da hero win da end" after the same 3 levels 3 times would have been awful

      It is possible that my nostalgia for this series may be making me remember the ending as being better than it actually is.

      I remember that DISTINCTLY because that's the same codec where Snake drops the truth bomb that Vamp is called Vamp not because he's a vampire, but because he's bisexual.

    It was all The Dark Presence. I don't think it actually took Alan's face yet, did it?

    I'll be honest, I never played this also because I was told it was bad and didn't want one of my favorite games to be ruined or dampened like psycho-pass has been
