Today let’s break down the episode's plots, worst moments, critique the character decisions, and rant about how it all went wrong. From Pam's emotional turmoil to Jim's questionable choices, this episode really sucks. Technically...it's good. But I hate it.

I think Jim and Pam's argument is one of the best scenes in the whole show. They spent the whole episode seeing it up, so it didn't feel random or out of place. Jim took a possibly fatal blow to his new startup so it makes sense that he'd lose his temper a lot more quickly, and then Pam saying "well maybe you shoulda been there" makes perfect sense in the context of the whole season. The set-up is great, the writing is great, the acting is great, it all just felt real.
Who cares if it's not what the Office usually does? If there were big heavy emotional arguments all the time, i probably wouldn't like thus show very much. But if they take a stab at it once, and they nail it, then Idk it seems like no harm no foul to me.

Jim and Pam’s phone call ending is scarily realistic. Reminds me of some calls between me and my exes before
I loathe this episode. As much as Toby proves cringey in his pursuit of Nelly though, one overlooked aspect of this season is that Toby apparently has moved on from his unrequited crush on Pam to be willing to help Jim repair the relationship. Earlier in the show he probably would have made a move himself--he always seemed delighted when there were issues between them.
The more you hate an episode, the better it is. Because that was their intention with the show. It's cringe comedy.
It's nice to see Toby the way Michael saw him for a change.

When I woke up this morning, I knew, despite not being sure what episode would be covered today, that I'd be hearing "What am I doing wrong, Brian?" and I cringed right there in bed
Let's be honest, the Philly arc fixed an issue with Jim and Pam that has existed since they got together in season 3 which was no real tension between the characters. Post season 3 until now you could have written, "they lived happily ever after" and it would have explained everything. And while I agree that breaking up these characters would not have made any sense, especially in a short one season arc, how this storyline ended was definitely beneficial to both characters and the overall storyline of The Office.
Side note: Not a fan of how they retroactively made Andy into a bad boyfriend this episode.
yes, yes yes! This arc is not the writers flailing around looking for whatever drama they could make up. It shows how relationships take work, how they have to go through dark times, and how much better it can be if you make it through. This episode is heart-wrenching but the overall arc is beautiful. I cry every time I watch that scene in the parking lot when the good emotions start flowing again. It is very much earned, and very beautiful. I wouldn't be surprised if it has even helped save a few relationships! And, yeah, I wish they had kept the Andy we had when he got the Nard-dog tattoo!

I HATE HATE HATE this episode. I had no idea the goal was to get them divorced. Ridiculous. Honestly, the show should have ended with Michael leaving-or shortly after that. Great job breaking this down.
Knowing these 2 for 9 years, this whole fight does not seem like it would happen and the crap Jim says to Pam is something I feel that he would never say. I remember you saying in a video a while back that someone on the team wanted them to break up and I guess this is the closest they wanted to come to that.
Customer loyalty runs both ways. If viewers are the customers, loyalty to them would preclude breaking up Jim and Pam.
I don't want to defend Jim too hard, but I do feel he was projecting his own guilt over not being at the recital. He wanted to be there, and he wasn't. But he handled it in a horrible way. It was very clearly orchestrated to get Pam crying into another man's arms. You're absolutely right, that's not why we liked The Office.
This episode is one of my least favourites mostly due to all the Jim and Pam stuff- Brian is certainly my most hated Office character

So like did Greg Daniels have a messy heartbreaking divorce himself? There are so many moments throughout the show where he seems to have weird ideas about Jim and Pam, only to be luckily stopped by others involved. Why was he so determined to break them up
Yep. Like you said, this episode is trying to tell a story that shouldn't exist because it fundamentally goes against nine seasons of character development. Greg Daniels attempting to force some out of the blue rift in Jim and Pam's marriage because he was bored of the show radiates contempt for both the characters and the audience and I'm glad the larger 'divorce' arc was unanimously rejected. We're still stuck with this weird ass episode but I'm glad Brian got to play the smarmy creep in Silicon Valley instead of on The Office.
So JimPam to have a full blown argument over the phone about a cell phone video. In my best Oscar voice UN BELEIVE ABLE!!
I feel like this is one of those rare moments when writers need to pivot, and the pivot serves the plot pretty well. It would be weird if Jim and Pam didn't have problems through all these stressful situations, and it's normal to have moments of feelings for other people. Pam and Jim would never cheat as this shows, but they're not immune to temptations. Backing out of that plot meant Pam and Jim would grow stronger together.
16:23 i disagree... but i suppose maybe u needed to have work both in an office and warehouse? and maybe an office that HAD a warehouse??? ...the joke is in that every clue in the office stayed...but the one in the warehouse did NOT... Jim assumed the grail would be safe there because he assumed the warehouse paid as much attention to their surroundings as the office did to theirs...and that is to say ...A LOT MORE attention was paid in the warehouse...Darryl eludes to this when Pam tries to say she found a computer for Andy in the warehouse. Anyway, i was VERY amused by it as it confirmed my thoughts when Jim directed thru the clues to find it in the warehouse.
I love it personally. It reminds me of the "background character" gags from Community. Hope he does Community next. That's what she said.
When Pam struggles in a relationship, she finds emotional support in another man. This was reminiscent of her relationship with Roy, where Jim was the emotional support back in season 1. I feel this shows stunted character growth for Pam. As for Jim, his behaviour is so uncharacteristic that it makes the whole argument look very forced.

I think the issue isn't necessarily that they tried to add dramatic weight-it's more that they failed to effectively add dramatic weight in line with the essence of the series and the characters. I'm not sure if you have ever watched It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but think about the scene where Charlie breaks down as he carries his dad up the mountain. The seemingly out of nowhere dramatic scene is jarring and out of place for the series, yet I never hear it get any complaints. The scene is still in line with what we know about Charlie and it's sandwiched between typical Sunny humor that does not detract from the weight of the moment.
My problem with the Jim Pam drama is that it does not really align with what we know about Jim and Pam (particularly Jim). Additionally, the fact that it is the very last scene in an episode signifies to me that this is a new direction that the series is taking, unlike the Charlie breakdown scene. I think dramatic weight in a sit-com can be a good thing, if it is done right.
I think Brian was used as a wind-down to the "reality" that this is a documentary, which will soon end filming, and air.
Why is this video so different formatted than your usual? Where’s the music?
I remember watching this episode when it first aired, and my wife and I looking at each other with a WTF look on our faces right after the Brian scene. My wife said it was too gimmicky and I agreed. The fight between Jim and Pam felt really have for a comedy show. Yeah, as a married guy, I know couples aren't perfect, but what makes it too much for me is that the fight leads directly to them breaking the fourth wall and get Brian involved. Maybe Greg Daniels was back, but the original DNA of the show seems to have essentially been gone or largely unrecognizable.
Oof yeah, I kinda get that rating. I don't agree but I get it. I actually love Brian as an idea, that fourth wall break made me really excited when I first saw it but then he just got kinda awkward and just became a plot device and it ruined the character for me. It felt like there was a lot they could have done with that moment and that character but using it to drive a wedge between Jim and Pam is really rough.
Idk man, "Can you dump it on a woman?" line is the most unique line in TV history, and the way it's delivered alone should give this episode at least a 2.5 rating.

On first viewing i thought the ending was just showing that the crew is close to the office workers after all those years. It made sense. I thought it was kinda nice. Brian being in love with Pam is the single dumbest story decision they could've possibly made. It's extremely creepy and inappropriate.

one question ive had about the office i was hoping you could answer is that the Scranton branch is being faced with downsizing so why did they bring on Ryan? its theorized that hes there to replace Tom who was in accounting but later on in the halloween episode Angila says the accounting department doesnt need three people.
The best explanation is that Ryan was a temp, not a regular employee. So his salary was not as high as a typical employees and they did not have to pay him benefits. Also, Ryan was brought on the same episode Jan told Michael about the downsizing. Meaning, they made the decision to bring him in before Michael learned that the company was cutting costs.
My head cannon is that Ryan was a replacement for the poor fella who passed away. But Michael wasn’t really authorized to onboard a new employee so he got a temp to hide it (more or less) from corporate. Michael liked the idea of Ryan, so when he had to let someone go, Ryan wasn’t even on the list.

I feel the same conflict that you feel. In a vacuum I'd say this episode is even above average, but as an office episode I hate it so much.
You got this one right, Chris. 1/5 is about right. Did not care for almost any part of this episode. I did slightly enjoy watching Nellie's discomfort at Toby's creepiness (although at the same time finding Toby himself to be gross).

I 100% agree with this review, this was a terrible episode for the story they tried to convey
Hot Take: Jim and Pam ARE NOT PERFECT, WHICH MAKES THEM THE PERFECT TV COUPLE. They are petty, sometimes irresponsable, they are sometimes too uptight, sometimes selfish... They are "real". This fight feels real: Jim is away, thriving in is success, but being totally a dick with Pam, probably for not get behind of him in the first place. Pam, who in traditional conformism and fear for "the new", takes all the weight of home and get this dickish attack from Jim. They both are flawed characters and this shows it. About the boom guy? Probably unnecesary, but the rest is cool. It feels like that.
I feel like that’s a great argument but it forgets that the main criticism of the seasonal arch is that the drama feels manufactured and not natural or even something remotely believable for what we know of these characters. It plays on the idea that Pam and Jim need to have relational drama which directly harms the characters perception.
I agree with that. But I think you can still get conflict without and inminent break up. I could've been done way better.
@@grandmaknarf While I agree that this particular fight in this episode was forced, at the end of the day, the core of this arc was that Jim and Pam were moving in different directions which is a real thing couples deal with. Jim never wanted to just be a paper salesman but he put his aspirations on hold mostly for Pam. At the beginning of this season, he realizes he wants more out of life and pushes himself to chase after that goal. And this is not the first time Jim decides he wants more out of his career. There is the comanager arc, him going after the supervisor position, even his performance in Stanford all shows that Jim was settling while he was in Scranton.
I think the big issue is that older seasons Jim would’ve told Pam about Philly.

I hated this one, Brian should not have ever existed. It is so cringy and when I saw it the first time I was super pissed. Also when he appears later episodes, puke! I know it sounds unfair, but I saw that actor in something else, and I instantly hated him. I can't remember what is was now, but I turned it off. It might have even been something filmed before this episode that I saw recently. I just hated this one. I also hated Kathy. Why did they have to mess with Jim and Pam? These obviously didn't work, but maybe they should have listened to the actors playing the characters. They know the best on how the character has developed, they were part of the process I am certain. damn it, I hate season 9!

Sigh. The accountants are all jerks and hypocrites. Angela is terrible and not in a funny way. Dwight is more cartoonish than Michael ever was. As some one who never liked Jim or Pam as much as the internet used to, this sucked but not as bad as everyone says. I hate Brian's use even though I don't hate the idea of his use. The c-story with Nellie is forgettable and the random people are Karens. Irredeemable although I love the Dunder Code (feels like a Community style gag),Daryll's payoff is righteous, and Toby's analysis of Andy and Erin's relationship is surprisingly accurate on rewatch.
in this episode i could not be more repulsed by pam. not because she wants her normal scranton life! but because shes acting like this is all a shock to her and it is so irritating. and yes jim is high off of his new job and hes being annoying as well i must add. but pam with this what???? whats going on? attitude is too annoying for me. also ur mad at bryan????? why? he doesnt own the camera crew? nor did he ever lie NOR did he / the camera crew hide their filming, secret or not... the office knew that many seasons ago and thats a plot hole in the show. ugh. lmfao
i like this episode because Jim and Pam are a boring couple of mediocre bullies. They deserve conflict in their marriage.
