    You may consider it simple, but we consider it smart. Perfect example of working smarter and not harder! We are definitely curious what all those cut boards are going to become.

    This is great! I've been looking for a DIY stop block that doesn't involve t-tracks, band saws, and complex engineering. This is perfect. Thanks!

    Simple and effective. I am going to make sure I can mount it to my saw and make one.
    The only thing I would suggest is adding a small (~1/8"-1/4") bevel on the bottom of the long fence to help prevent gathered dust in the corner from stopping the workpiece shy of the block and making pieces short.

    • @TheGrantAlexander

      Thanks! I had considered adding measurements, but if you ever remove it or need to recut the "zero clearance" you will need to change the measurements.. so I decided against it😂

    • @TheGrantAlexander
      @TheGrantAlexander  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much! I've done 45s with this one before, you just end up cutting through your zero clearance fence (which is fine because you can just slide it down and recut it to zero clearance once you are done) if you want to you can also make 45 degree stop blocks, but i didn't find it necessary in my case. Good luck!

    • @kiethbiasillo4678
      @kiethbiasillo4678 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheGrantAlexander my thought was that I might just make it dual purpose so I can just flip the boards and attach for a miter. One way may be all I need, I think…? Thanks again, I especially liked the fact that you fit this in such a short video. I have subscribed to see some of your other stuff too! L8r

  • @richardmiller191
    @richardmiller191 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video! I think the zero clearance is brilliant. Makes measuring easier and more accurate. It was always a pain to measure and draw a line on the wood and then bring down the blade to see where exactly it would cut and figure what side of the line to cut. This eliminates the guesswork.

    • @TheGrantAlexander
      @TheGrantAlexander  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much Richard! If I'm only making one or two cuts I often just measure from the zero clearance line and make a mark on the fence. Like you said, much more accurate than marking the workpiece.

  • @BusyBeeLiving
    @BusyBeeLiving 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @TheGrantAlexander  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Michael! The scoring cut is used to prevent/lessen tear out on the top of the board. 👍

    Will this work on 45 degree miter cuts?
    I’ve been searching for a good system and this one looks both simple and easy to put together. Thanks for sharing.

    • @TheGrantAlexander
      @TheGrantAlexander  ปีที่แล้ว

      It would, but then the "zero clearance" wouldn't be there any more. I've used it on 45s before the only thing is the stop block needs to be changed to a 45 one 😁

    Hi ya Grant! I like the video. This stop block system looks fairly easy. My question is: Can you use MDF to make this or does it have to be plywood? I'm sure plywood would last longer, but wasn't too try to use what I have on hand.
    Thank you for the video and for taking the time to make it. 👍😀

    • @TheGrantAlexander
      @TheGrantAlexander  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I don't think MDF would be strong enough. 3/4 plywood seems to be the right choice for stability, but if you have scrap MDF give it a try and let me know how it works out

    Great video! I have been looking for a spot that does that involve a T track. I have a few questions though. Firstly, ha here is the knob in the final result? Is into on the back if the fence? I assume so, but then how does it stay it place when you put lumber up agasint it? I have an idea but I’m not certain.

    • @TheGrantAlexander
      @TheGrantAlexander  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jake! Good questions and after the video was released I realized I didn't show exactly how the knob works. It does screw directly into the back of the fence. It stays in place because the screw digs into the plywood fence. It's not perfect as it will eventually wear out, but you can always replace it 😁

      @@TheGrantAlexander that is what I was thinking but I was not sure if it would hold tight enough. I bought all the material and plan on making the stop block soon. I already made a fence using your method.

    Great idea, however, I see a problem with this with a miter saw that doesn't have the sliding capabilities, which means that will take away from the width that i can cut. Any ideas on how to modify this for a stationary miter saw?

    • @TheGrantAlexander
      @TheGrantAlexander  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I agree it takes away some of the cutting depth, which is frustrating even if you have a sliding miter saw🤣 you are always 1" from the edge of the cut you want to make. In terms of a solution for you, I would build a structure (like wings on the side of your miter saw stand) that's in line with fence. Then you can add a stop block system to that. Good luck!

    Grant, I'm impressed with that stop block. It looks so simlpe that I might even be able to make it. All I know for sure is I'm gonna try. I'm new at wood working so I have a lot to learn. Like any hobby or anything else for that matter in life you never stop learning and the only way to learn is to ask. So my question is way did you make to a cut across the top of the board and then cut it again to finish the cut with your miter saw, Instead of just cutting it in one pass? Thanks and have a great day. Carl

    • @TheGrantAlexander
      @TheGrantAlexander  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Carl! I'm sure you will be able to get it done! I do the cut across the top of the wood and then a second pass through it because it gives a cleaner cut. I don't know the exact reason why it works, but I know that it does😂😂 good luck with the new hobby 🍻

    I don't have holes in fence so I will need to drill some or set a clamp. would this be safe for cutting very short lengths -2" or less?

    • @TheGrantAlexander
      @TheGrantAlexander  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could get fence clamps and that would probably work well. You can use it for very small cuts, the problem becomes safely holding the wood. If you can work that out you can use it no problem 👍 good luck

    • @TheGrantAlexander
      @TheGrantAlexander  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dustycarter2729 if you get a piece of plywood and cut it into an L shape you can hold the small bit with the short side of the L and even use a clamp on the long side of the L. I agree with waiting until the saw stops otherwise it will often fling the wood😂😂

      Yes you can and I have done that occasionally. Obviously, you would need to make a different one depending on the side for the stop block that reaches past the saw's original fence.
