- England are playing Cameroon in the quarter finals of World Cup Italia 1990 and it is half time. Cameroon have outplayed England in the first half missing a host of chances yet England lead 1-0. Back in the live minute by minute TV studio pundits Bob Wilson, Terry Venables and Jimmy Hill discuss the first half with clips from the first half and they are definitely not happy. This match was played on the 1st July 1990 and Terry Venables went on to manage England from 1994 to 1996. Bob Wilson played 234 times for Arsenal FC and had a very successful broadcasting career and Jimmy Hill played for Brentford and Fulham, was also both the manager and director of Coventry City and had a long and successful broadcasting career with the BBC, ITV and Sky Sports.

I never thought at the time I'd say this, but damn, Jimmy Hill was good. And him and Tel? Just real punditry, I thoroughly enjoyed this.
Jimmy knew his onions. Player Manager Players Union Rep & on the club board of Coventry, oh a Linesman too! Then on the two top football shows Big Match & MotD & then invited as a pundit. Miss that chin chinny chin!
Bob Wilson was good too, a natural tv presenter. On the 71 Cup Final he introduced a segment on his Arsenal teammates & when he retired the BBC signed him up.
Fantastic. It is often forgotten what an excellent and versatile broadcaster Bob Wilson was. Presume Des was with Barry in the stadium. Talk about spoilt for choice.
It's mad how the lens of nostalgia has distorted most peoples memories of England's 90 WC, as the general belief is that we were decent. In truth, we were only good for 1 match - the game in which we were knocked out. Our opener against the Republic was one of the worst games in WC history, followed by a dreadfully dull 0-0 with the Dutch and then a 1-0 win over minnows Egypt in which we were hanging on for dear life at the end. In the last 16 Belgium battered us but we somehow stayed in it and of course Platt scored _that_ goal with the last kick. And then the Cameroon match which as you can tell from Jimmy and Terry here, we were crap. 2 penalties got us out of jail - the second a clear dive from Lineker albeit one I celebrated wildly at the time. There's no guarantee whatsoever we'd have 'comfortably beaten' Argentina in the final had we got there.
The match was so open, England had plenty of chances as well.
McMahon said in 2017 that he doesn't understand why today we have 'defensive midfielders' who only sit and don't also act as the third runner into the box. How ironic that Venables wanted him as the holding midfielder and Hill didn't think he could do what Platt did for the goal. Hill was often right but here he's completely wrong. Even with McMahon in a defensive midfield role at the expensive of Barnes etc he wouldn't have prevented Cameroon from passing through us. England simply didn't have the players to cope with Cameroon and sitting back was not natural or possible for that England team. As managers like Robson, SAF, Klopp understood, sometimes you've got to trust that you can score more and make the opposition make mistakes. We made plenty but not as many as Cameroon!
Personally, I've always thought that Hill was a total plunker - despite him being famously known for having done a lot of things in the football industry. I also noticed that he always disagreed with other pundits he came across.
agree..Cameroon in case alot of people forget were actually missing four first choice players and this screwed their defence up..The issue of not using McMahon is interesting..I strongly believe the 1990 England team was designed for a 4-2-3-1 system Venables would have had Platt being more advanced and McMahon (replacing Robson) in a more sitting defensive role..would it have stopped Cameroon? maybe (Parker was being pulled all over the place)..England were working all out to keep up with them..Oman Biyik decision to shoot straight at Shilton instead of round him at 2;1 was a mistake that cost them along with their generally poor finishing..
Also I love this match..its one of my all time favourite WC matches..

Shilton, 20 years as a England player & goalkeeper must be a record, it is: just under 1400 matches played & 125 caps without Clemence you could add on another 40+ easily. Ray was good but Shilts better I'd say. Ray always had top defenders in front of him, Shilton's defenders were more erratic & he never played for any big clubs, they were always unfashionable Leicester Stoke Derby N. Forest Southampton.. surely big clubs tried to sign him, must have but for some reason he didn't go or respond. Mystery of Mysteries..🤔
Nottingham Forest won the European Cup in 79 and 81 with Shilton so his loyalty was with Clough who should have been the England manager after Greenwood left.

Shiltons defenders were more eratic? 2 european cups back to back, league title and league cup all from the second division the year before? yeah really eratic, Forest werent unfashionable either only in your head it would seem, we was the bollox back then 42 games unbeaten and all they kept saying was "the bubble will burst" most of them like yourself never had a good word to say about Forest.
Always wanting to dig about "big clubs" mainly those who chose the winning teams to support instead of their team choosing them.

Shilton left very soon after the european cup win along with the nucleaus of that winning side.

Why the laughing ? They carried on on doing it in the second half and were 2-1 down within 20 minutes.
