It's mad how the lens of nostalgia has distorted most peoples memories of England's 90 WC, as the general belief is that we were decent. In truth, we were only good for 1 match - the game in which we were knocked out. Our opener against the Republic was one of the worst games in WC history, followed by a dreadfully dull 0-0 with the Dutch and then a 1-0 win over minnows Egypt in which we were hanging on for dear life at the end. In the last 16 Belgium battered us but we somehow stayed in it and of course Platt scored _that_ goal with the last kick. And then the Cameroon match which as you can tell from Jimmy and Terry here, we were crap. 2 penalties got us out of jail - the second a clear dive from Lineker albeit one I celebrated wildly at the time. There's no guarantee whatsoever we'd have 'comfortably beaten' Argentina in the final had we got there.

In the next World Cup Mexico will play hosts for the THIRD time. Hughes is England’s one and ONLY time was in 1966. They will never give it to us.

In those days you'd rather not play an African team because most of their tackles were extremely poor and ill timed. Cameroon did really will in that WC, holding their ground against some of the best teams in the world at the time: Argentina, USSR, Colombia (with Valderamma), and narrowly and unjustly losing to England.

It is almost prophetic what that gentleman said in regards to England never hosting a World Cup again, by 1990 it had been 24 years since they hosted it, and now it 58 years since they last host a World Cup and it will be at least another 14 years before they may as the next European hosted WC will go to Spain and Portugal in 2030, and then to Saudi Arabia in 2034.

This is a strange video in that it only highlights England's chances. True, they played well that night but the Netherlands looked out of sorts at this World Cup, which was a real shame, having been one of the best teams in the world in 1988. They had some infighting prior to this competition which affected them. They also finished 3rd, which meant they went on to play West Germany in the second Round, while Ireland went on to play the easier tie in Romania. They were unlucky but mentally, they looked totally off it. Gullit had a poor tournament.

I know Motty wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but boy I miss his infectious commentary. He's totally living the game. John Murray also has that quality on R5 today but so often commentators try to make it about them and their clever stats (Matterface the worst culprit). Motty was meticulous but never forgot it's about the passion for the game. Great goal by Platty btw.

I was there! 4th row midfield, upper deck. The previous night I had been at Game 7 Stanley Cup final, NY Rangers win. So Much Green Then the Crowd Detonated when Houghton surprised everyone!

I watched this game on holiday on the Isle of Wight. I was 11 years old, and we watched it in the sports bar of the on site's club at the caravan park we were staying at (Haven I think.) Anyway, when that goal went in, the whole club went mad and I kid you not, grown men were jumping in the pool fully dressed with pints in hand. A really magical football night for an 11 year old.
