- How to install Guardian roof jacks, for working on steep roofs. If you are needing to work on a roof that is pretty steep where you can't simply walk on it, you can install these little roof jacks and put 2x6 boards on top of them working your way up the roof.

Roofers have big balls
I use these as a painter . We spend a lot of time in one place so I put down a drop or sometimes cardboard and staple it down (lightweight) so it wont slide That way I don't wear out the shingles where my feet dig in . I've seen MANY roofs with worn out patches from trades being on them for extended periods
We use 2x10 planks for our roof jacks. Good tip on the nails vs screws, I agree I would feel much safer with a spike nail. Great explanation as always
2x10 would be great for the extra size, I just don't want to haul them up
I'm guessing you already know this, but I'm always skeptical of splitting the wood when I'm nailing the jacks themselves into the board, and an old framer buddy taught me to gently tap the sharp end of the nail with a hammer before nailing it in and that will dull it enough to help better prevent potential splitting.
I had a guy try to fix the leak around my chimney.
He used roof Jack's and missed the trusses on every one.
I find it amazing how many roofers use a couch cushion on roofs no, I was doing that 30 years ago before 90% of roofers. Very old school. In my day very few new that trick.
And that's the reason I don't do roofing for a living!!!!!!

Instead of using a basic screw you can use a grk screw which is basically a screw with shear strength.
Watch out for knots in the middle of the 2x6 they are weak points
Just wanted to say your videos and reply to my past comment has helped me tremendously in last couple months.
Definitely has encouraged me to do the research I needed to find the right roofing contractor and to get my insurance to finally cover my whole roof!
They paid for one side and after some back and forth and a brittle test preformed by my contractor, I was able to get them to finally give in and cover the other side they initially wanted to repair.
I will definitely be watching and recommending your channel to all my friends, family, and co-workers ( I am a licensed painting contractor)!
If you had time and happen to read this I had one last quick question.....
I am finally scheduled to have roof replaced/put on here in East Tennessee next Tuesday and Wednesday.
They may get on Tuesday but Wednesday will most likely be day they put shingles on, and it shows temperature is going to be sunny and 63 on Tues. and 65 on Wednesday and mid 40's at night both those nights.
I feel comfortable with those temperatures, but forecast shows Thursday some rain moving in early and temp is going to drop to 53 for high and 34 for low. ( Fingers crossed that changes)
Question: As long as roof is finished Wednesday, would it worry you as a roofing contractor if it rained day after you put roof on and/ or Temperature dropped like that the next day after?
It's just for a day and Temps going back to mid 50's and sunny all through the weekend. I just not sure if there is a "cure time " after roof is completed, and if so would rain or a dip in temp like that affect it?
Again, I appreciate any advice in advance.

Hi Chris, I do read just about every comment and I try to reply to those needing help. To answer your question about the temperature, rain will not hurt a new install roof. Well providing it was installed good. Those temperatures your are talkin about, I would not worry one bit. what you want the warmer temperatures for is to seal down the shingles before you get into strong Winter winds. I'm sure we'll still have a couple of warm days. Most all manufacturers nowadays have a pretty aggressive seal strip. What shingle brand are you having installed?

The Brand of shingle I am going with is Certainteed Landmark series.
From what I read it is very durable shingle, and it is what my contractor generally uses/suggests.
Is that a shingle you would recommend?
@@chriskeith5742 yes the landmark serious is a good! There's really one brand that would definitely recommend staying away from which is tamko. Only time I would really be concerned with these temperatures with a new install is if you're in the middle of a cornfield where the winds can do damage before it seals down.

I live at the foot of a mountain.
Look out my window and literally surrounded by mountains on all sides.
Generally, those mountains break up any major wind storms and we never have to worry about tornadoes.
Having said that, those winds occasionally whip through here between the large mountain ridges knida like breezeway,
but generally, nothing too strong.
The storm that did come through was one of more powerful ones I've seen in 15 years.
Most all the older 3 tab shingled roofs on my street had some shingles blown off.
All the ones that were updated to architectural/dimensional held up fine.
Those 3 tabs are seriously junk.
My mom had her roof done after a tree branch hit about 4 years ago.
Insurance covere and contractor actually did a really good job, but they did unfortunately use Tamko Heritage Premium.
But so far so good. I had inspected it and it is still like new. Hardly any granular loss at all in 4 years.
She does have a lot of shade, which I am sure helps.

Can’t imagine putting nail holes in a new roof. I’m sure the patches will eventually leak. There are better ways.
Scott at the Essential Craftsman YT channel just did a video on how screws don't have a good shear strength or side loads.
So this going through the plywood?.. because otherwise what else would testing by driving the nail through mean when finding a truss..
Can you keep going? Working on a 5.5 inch board is pretty scary if you ask me. Lets see a pro do it.
Just by engineered construction screws with the specs on the box and you'll have both shear strength and the bend flexibility
This was useful. Doing my first shingled roof (it's a DIY project), and it's a conical roof. Had the Guardian brackets on the roof before the shingles (while I did the decking), and your video answered some additional questions I had. AND - I take full responsibility for my own safety. Thanks. Hey - when I'm done, and I remove the brackets, do I daub some roofing tar over the nail/screw holes?
It's not necessary unless they are in or near the key way. Or if the shingles have already sealed down and you have to split them to get it out then it definitely won't hurt to use some.
I usually do it, just in case. It comes in caulking tube, so it's pretty easy to do

That foam pad has saved more lives than a shitty pitch hopper ever could. Nobody got time to have that fancy shit. Tie yourself off and keep a pad with you if you feel it’s needed and get to work. Those hoppers are junk and last like 2 months

Have you ever used them just nailed in anywhere, not finding the truss? I know you wouldn't advise or recommend that, but I wonder if that's ever been the way you've done it before?
I've been doing that for over a decade with no issue. I try to find a truss, but often don't. I've never had a jack come out and I only use 2 nails sometimes
Damn there should be regulations roofs should never be so steep
Looks higher then 12 pitch roof to me which at that point is NOT safe. 12 pitch is the steepest roof you can safely climb on with special boots.
