    The cgm has been a great starting point for my hair to get back to naturally wavy/curly. It's the bloggers, influencers who have turned this into the circus it now is, by recommending every product on the market.
    Less is definitely more 😊

      I have always felt this way. And I couldn't keep up with them so I ditched social media. It's too much!

      Very true! I feel consumerism has seeped into CGM and we're putting too much or doing too much manipulation to get hair to look like a blogger/influencers. Of course not all influencers but I would say 90% of them are pushing product (cause it is their job after all). But we as consumers need to be more mindful and take everything we see with a pinch of salt

      My hair is in a much better place from not watching anyone and just being me!

    I've read the Curly Girl handbook by Lorraine Massey and while she does recommend co-washing, she doesn't say no to diffusing. In fact for wavy hair she recommends diffusing for more definition and shrinkage. She definitely says no to blow drying and straightening.
    Coming to my own hair, it's fine, wavy, low porosity and medium density. I haven't coloured or bleached it and I have no heat damage to recover from. I've been following a wavy hair routine for 1 year 9 months now and I have noticed that my hair has changed. Gels have stopped working for me (In fact I used just a gel last night and my waves are flat today even though I slept in a buff and on a satin pillow cover). My hair is just loving using leave-in conditioners with protein in it. It's rejecting gels and heavy curl creams now. Foams also work fine. I used light hold gels, medium hold gels, gels with protein, gels without protein and its refusing to accept them. So I've decided to stick to just leave-in conditioners for the time being (Oh and I clarified and I tried gels again - same results).

      The good thing is to pay attention and notice things so you can modify as you've done. It's great once you're at that point. Makes things so much easier.

    Thank you for sharing this. I, too, found the curly girl method to work for about a year (my hair wasn't very damaged) but then the dandruff flakes were too much to take and it was so weighed down. I remember one time I got my hair cut and I told the stylist that I had dandruff so she used a dandruff shampoo on my hair and it looked and felt so much better after that. I immediately started incorporating a dandruff shampoo in the routine (it also helps to clarify) and saw improved results. I clarify every 2 weeks and hardly ever use a deep conditioner (if I do I only leave it in for the amount of time it takes to shave my legs). It's really just about finding what works for your hair, not someone else's.

      That's exactly it! I'm starting to use dandruff shampoo now because I have dandruff. Not sure why all of a sudden I have it now but I'm hoping this works.

    It’s really helpful to hear how you have refined your hair regimen. I was finding I was having similar problems as you and decided to start breaking some of the curly girl method “rules”. I realized I needed to pay attention to my hair and how it was responding. I also have fine low density hair and it was being weighed down by a lot of the curly girl products that work better for medium thick,medium density hair. So, I started using less heavy products, and also clarifying as I also have hard water and have been clarifying occasionally but your video made me realize that perhaps I can do that more often. Thanks for sharing your insight!

      Glad it was helpful. My hair loves to be clarified now. I feel like I can probably do it every wash and be fine lol.

    I am a stylist/aesthetician in Florida. I have been trying to follow the curly girl method since about 2002. The problem with the curly girl method, is that many of the products contain coconut derived ingredients. Coconut oil is highly comedogenic, meaning, it is very clogging and irritating to the scalp and skin. Also, a lot of the synthetic fragrances that are in products today are derived from coconut as well, and that can also cause a lot of irritation and problems with the skin in the scalp. Sulfates or not so much the problem. Ammonium lauryl sulfate is safe for the skin and scalp, while sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium in laureth sulfate, are very irritating and clogging. Once I got off of these offending ingredients, my scalp became much happier. Thank you Delilah for sharing this video, and for all of your research and insights! So helpful :-) the best to you.

      This is a very good point. I struggle with plain coconut oil but other than that no issues with coconut based ingredients. But I know some people can't do any coconut derivatives which makes things really difficult. Thanks for sharing.

    I have scalp issues too, red , itchy, and painful just like you were talking about. I read someplace if you pain on your scalp it could be from inflammation. My hair is still very dry damaged can’t get a cast. I do color my hair. I’ve had lost more than half my hair since using deva curl products years ago.

      I'm so sorry to hear that. My scalp stuff is confusing and dermatologists could never say for certain what it is. But dandruff shampoo helps so I'm using it now. I recently started getting scalp pain in addition to the itching and flaking. I was testing a shampoo for the last few months and my clarifying shampoo ran out. I think I let it go too long.

      Everytime I have pain in my scalp its because there is build up there. The first time I realized this they were like clumps its was so gross. I massage my scalp now to a count of 100 every single time I wash and clarify every three weeks.

    *Helpful* . I started my healthy hair journey at 52, during menopause. I had massive shedding, breakage, dullness, etc. I'm 2B-c, fine, low density, hard water was a huge issue that I had not considered. Clarifying and deep conditioning on the regular became a staple. Trying to navigate through all the products, moisture/protein balance, porosity was a challenge. In the beginning, I stopped coloring, switched to moisturizing over volumizing labels, and air dried. My hair got healthier. 5 years in, hair was breaking again and I realized I was neglecting protein. The gray hairs are a whole new situation that I am trying to figure out.

    when I realized I had curly hair, about 25 years ago, the only help available at that time was the curly girl method, that Lorraine Massey came up with and using Deva Curl, her products. They were amazing and I had great results. She did NOT promote only no poo, (no shampoo), but she also offered a low lather shampoo, which I used for my baby fine hair. I had such pretty curls that strangers would approach me and ask about them. Eventually, Lorraine sold her company and that's when Deva Curl went down hill.
    Many problems with deva curl since. I just wanted to clarify, Lorraine NEVER promoted only no poo, she also promoted low poo and she had a low lather shampoo. She has gotten a bad reputation because many people don't remember or are not aware of the fact that she offered and suggested a low poo optio for finer hair or wavy hair. She suggested no poo for the courser, denser curls. I remember.

      I thought this too but 2 years ago she put out a statement saying no shampoo ever and basically saying that if we modify cgm then we can't call it that. It was a whole big thing at the time and the way she talked to people put me off a bit. But regardless, I read her book and that's what I was following. It worked well for the first year but then stopped. I also used the original Deva products too which I mostly liked.

      @@HolisticEnchilada I understand, but....25 years ago when I used her products, she did promote and sell a low poo. Maybe she has changed her mind in later years, especially since she created a new line of products that does not have a low poo.

    at first it was wonderful, my curls were shiny, defined, soft, etc.
    but now, idk if its cuz I changed my products or started heat styling more often, but my hair Is dull. and even when I do the cgm, it doesn't work like it did before. I've been stopping heat for the past 3 months. and no change. so heat isn't all of the problem.

    Hi! I was on your talk live today, but couldn’t send comments. I have the same hair as you but shorter. I have tried the curl and ultra shine shampoos and conditioner, but can’t seem to get a good hold. I have the mouse and total control cream and dream gel. What do u recommend for shampoo the insta volume? Because I think the others weigh my curl and almost goes straight

    • @HolisticEnchilada
      @HolisticEnchilada  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you should be fine with the SmartCurl shampoo and conditioner using the mousse and the Total Control to style. The Dream Gel is more moisturizing than the Total Control. If you want more hold, try styling on damp hair instead of wet and maybe use a little bit more product. Have you also tried brush styling? That helps my style last longer but it is more work. If you want to the the InstaVolume it should work as well. It's a lot less moisturizing, but that change won't give you more hold.

    • @marilenigarcia6626
      @marilenigarcia6626 ปีที่แล้ว

      So doing on damp hair sounds good because I am doing it on wet, but do u like the curl shampoo or insta volume better? When I did quiz it said the the moisture shine with insta volume leave in

      I prefer InstaVolume because I like more volume. It's a stronger shampoo which I prefer. Leaves my hair feeling squeaky clean.

      I use the Behairful but I don't recommend you buy from them anymore. They are scammers. Any brush that creates some tension will work well. I have heard the Briogeo brush is a dupe for the Behairful.

    What water soluble silicone styling products would you recommend for fine low density wave/curls?

    • @HolisticEnchilada
      @HolisticEnchilada  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know of any off the top of my head. You can look for dimethicones with PEG prefix in the ingredients label to find water soluble silicones. Polyquat 69 is another good ingredient that works like a silicone and easily washes out. It's in some popular gels like Jessicurl Spiralicious.

  • @shadowchsr79

    Your hair may actually be closer to lower porosity. Finer hair strands can mimic meduim and higher porosity hair because the narrower core and naturally fewer layers of hair cuticle mean hair will get wet faster, and like/crave protein, and lightweight stylers. It it will also get buildup faster and needs very little product compared to higher porosity hair that tends to absorb more product due to that lifted hair cuticle. Just something you may want to keep in mind. I am not an expert and its just a guess but just given heo long youve been taking better care of your curls and how little product your hair needs, that could be why.

    • @HolisticEnchilada
      @HolisticEnchilada  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a mix of medium and high but it has always preferred lighter products even when it was all high porosity. Now that it's healthier I need less moisture.
