      Thank you for this video! I am new to CGM and found a couple of Facebook groups being a bit extreme with following the rules, so it is nice to see that I am not the only one thinking of using a normal shampoo for clarifying :D

    I'm definitely a sulfate clarifying wavy; I think a lot of people with fine and wavy hair need to clarify that way, it seems like a ton of us end up going back to it because our hair kinda needs it!

      Where I live, we have extremely hard water. Clarifying shampoo is the only thing that breaks through it. I have to clarify every 1 1/2 weeks otherwise it becomes unmanageable.

    My sulfate/silicone, towel dried and combed/brushed curly hair was beautiful, with shine, low frizz and defined coils. BUT as everyone I fell for the CGM trend. As a lot of people I read the book and started with the Deva products, which were too high maintenance to use (and expensive) and destroyed my hair the month I used them (waaaay before the scandal).
    So I adopted other products and banned sulfates and silicones. I got a head of thinning and shedding hair in the 4 years I followed the method. Doctor visits and clinical tests gave me clean health and bills to pay. Last November I saw Curl Ninja's videos and thought that, beyond Deva, maybe my hair and the CGM just didn't agree.
    I thought my hair was an age problem as I am 45. I was so saddened was losing my curls because I have a long personal story with my hair. As a teenager I was envious of my friends because they were pretty and had great bodies, while I was just this stick thin unbreasted teenager that boys didn't find attractive at all. However, the one thing my friends were envious of me was my curly hair. People usually thought it was a wig.
    I decided enough was enough. Best thing I ever did. I quite CGM, started sulfate shampooing my hair every 2 days and the rest is story. My curls are back and my hair is getting health again.

    You’re channel has been SO helpful in starting my curly girl journey! I just found out 3 months ago (when I moved to a humid climate) that my hair was wavy-I had no idea before that, I always just thought it was frizzy for no reason. The CGM was really rough in the beginning and I wanted to give up but then I found your channel and you convinced me to change some things and keep going. It has taken some patience, but things are going so much better now! I actually had a whole week of good hair days last week! Your videos are so informative and helpful. Thank you so much!!

    Courtney, you are so much fun to watch. It is like getting a message from an old friend. I am also a "modified" CG. I do not use silicones and mostly no sulfates except to clarify periodically. I don't use terry cloth towels any more and sleep on a satin pillow case but also put my hair up in a cap or pineapple for sleep. I do diffuse but usually on medium heat and I color my hair. GASP! But my natural hair color has not been seen in 30 years so... there it is. However, I condition well and my hair has become so much healthier and that after all it the point.

    So random observation; You and Mell are my favourite curly girls, you’re both very informative! Which i looove!
    I personally dont use silicones/sulfates but i dont really care about wax/drying alcohols etc
    I use a brush in the shower too. And i do NOT pineapple *gasp*, it just doesn’t work for me 🤷🏽‍♀️
    I’m sure there other things I don’t do but i cant be bothered to remember them lol
    I think that everyone should do what they feel works for their hair. Everyone has different hair so it would be kind of ignorant to assume that there is only one way that works. Great video as always!

    • @galibobali
      @galibobali 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      do you do anything else to preserve your curls overnight other than the pineapple? or do you just sleep on the hair as normal? I find that the pineapple stretches out my roots too much, but if I just sleep on it without tying it up, I lose my definition in the morning.

    • @stuckinthelazycorneragain4016
      @stuckinthelazycorneragain4016 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      galibobali i have the exact same problem. I haven’t found a solution to the problem, sadly. I don’t do anything to my hair. The only time my definition actually remained after sleeping was when i used gel but didn’t scrunch out the crunch. An idea to try if you haven’t? What do you do with your hair at night?

    • @galibobali

      @@stuckinthelazycorneragain4016 well, the first thing i tried was the pineapple. but i noticed my roots were too stretched out for my taste, and the rest of my curls looked a bit wonky. since i wash my hair in the evening, what I've been doing lately is letting my hair air dry for about two hours, then plopping it through the night and taking the t-shirt off in the morning. This is what preserves my definition, but sometimes the curls get smashed against my head in a weird way and i have to restyle in the morning. but other times i get good definition and frizz control. I'm currently looking for a different method that will give me good results every time. I think I might try sleeping in a satin bonnet and see how that works. by the way, i have very fine 2b waves.

    You already know!! 💁🏼‍♀️ I followed basically every single thing you recommended and my hair has improved by leaps and bounds! I am loving wash now style later, major time saver. Dry brushing is a rule I break. I have to reform my curls with a refresh after like day 4 and to do that with minimal frizz, I spray with a little water, add some leave in conditioner and run my wet brush through from ends to mids, then I twist certain hairs with a tiny bit of gel to get more definition. 🙌

    • @amym.5960

    • @elenagergis359
      @elenagergis359 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally can’t dry brush at all ‘cause my hair just ends up becoming a frizzy mess. I do refresh and detangle my hair every other day since my hair tangles EXTREMELY quick. I haven’t used sulfates or silicones since I went curly (two weeks ago), but after some research I’ve decided that I’ll do a sulfate cleanse once a month just so I can get rid of any buildup.

    • @CamilaSaurus

    I have low porosity hair. For me, co-washing is no-washing. If I co-wash my hair is dry, frizzy, and looks worse than before i got in the shower. I need, shampoo every wash, monthly clarifying w/ sulfates, and hot water to get conditioner & water in my hair.

    • @veronicaivanova
      @veronicaivanova 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's my opinion on co-washing too. I haven't tried it but it just sounds like all the dirt stays in my hair and I really don't care, whether it looks pretty, if I am also going to be dirty and itchy.

    Yesterday was one of my best hair days ever. It is not just the combination of products (they help) but technique is important too. And technique I learned from your videos. I have very fine wavy hair plus it is fly-away. You have often mentioned the benefit of silk. So yesterday I draped a silk scarf over my shoulders while I finished air drying. What a difference to my ends! I also cannot toss my hair around during the defusing process. (Creates frizz) I start by using a silk scarf, and GENTLY squeeze the water out of my roots lifting the strands from my scalp. And then I kind of wet style where I want the clumps to lay. Then diffuse on low air and heat, always pushing up. I may lean to the side, but never upside down. Works for me.

    2 weeks ago I started alternating the suave shampoo you showed and a conditioner with silicone with my 'curly girl friendly shampoo and conditioner. I wash twice a week. Every 3rd wash I use the sulfate shampoo. On a different wash day, every 3rd wash day I used the silicone conditioner. The alternate wash days I use my regular curly girl approved shampoo and conditioner. ALL my stylers are sulfate and silicon free. My hair LOVES this. It has behaved and shined and stayed beautiful for 3-4 days doing this. I don't understand the magic of it. But the sulfate shampoo makes sure that I don't get buildup of those silicone's. I'm at the point ( 2plus years CG) that I'm using what works for me. I think I need that towel tho. :)

    Great video, as always. If I'm honest, I'm not exactly a curly girl. I'm at best a very very loose wave, like 2A. I'm using your advice and techniques to get the illusion of curls. Basically diffusing and a really strong gel. My hair is already virgin and mostly healthy because I have been donating for years. I follow your tips to keep it even healthier. I don't brush nearly as often, I deep condition more often, I use a silk pillow case, I'm using cowash, and cut out most of the unhealthy ingredients. Although, not silicones. My hair likes them. My hair is really doing better with the changes I've made because of your channel. Which makes me happy. I want the hair I donate to be at it's best.

    I started the CG method a couple of months ago having had a straight bob for a few years. My hair was very curly when I was younger and had it's heyday in the 1980s when everyone was having perms!! It has gone finer and straighter with age. I am starting to realise that I need to be more realistic and take what works for me rather than pushing myself and my hair. The main plus for me is that the condition is already much better.

    I think the curly girl method is a good starting point espically when you feel lost and looking for a starting point, but watching you as well as other youtubers have given me a lot of good tips that help my hair. I use a sulfate shampoo (though it isn't heavy on the sulfates) and a silicone free conditioner. But I do not co-wash my hair ever, it hates it.

    Diffusing, even on high heat, won't really hurt your hair cause it's indirect heat. Especially if you aren't touching it to your head and you're just hovering it around. I am similar and use a brush both in the shower and on wash day, I will brush my hair dry (GASP. I know but i'm careful) and try and help break up the dry skin on my scalp. It really does help get all the flakes off

  • @daftoptimist
    @daftoptimist 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I use dry shampoo too! GASP. It’s only for emergencies, though, and I use a VERY light hand. And once I’m done blending it out I spritz a leave-in along the lengths, smooth/scrunch, and VERY lightly smooth the excess over the roots where I put the dry shampoo.

  • @kaylaolson8480

    I agree....my curls have definitely started to become more defined and spiraled with using the proper techniques and products, but I'm not going to rule out something with a "bad ingredient" that my hair responds well to because you can always clarify and start again. Especially on those days when I really need to tame those flyaway hairs. I use a wet brush to help detangle and I don't pineapple because it leaves a dent in my hair. You really have to learn your own hair and what works for you. I see the CG Method as guidelines, not rules. Everyone's hair is different!

    As someone with very similar hair to yours as fine but low porosity, 2c-3ab, those are the exact same rules I break. Strict no silicones, waxes, and petroleums. Besides, Massey does say in her book our hair type may do better being shampooed if I remember correctly. Being so fine I find we tend build up quick without one occasionally.

    I know these are very old videos but I'm just starting my hair journey now after discovering your channel (and Manes by Mell, and others!) and the rules you break make perfect sense. The inventor of the CGM has a totally different curl pattern and hair texture! People with 4C hair have very different needs than 2As! Obviously brushing through kinky, coily hair is a bad idea, but wavy hair behaves totally differently! Obviously thin wavy hair will have more oil build up! Thank you so much for making these videos, they're giving me so much hope that my hair will be manageable soon.

    Rules I break:
    I cannot sleep with a silk scarf and the satin pillow case disturbed the skin on my face.
    I have a nice serum from L'Oreal which contains drying alcohol but also moistirizing ones (also my hair is not dry at all)
    I touch my hair when it's still drying (Not a patient person)
    Use sulfate and low poo shampoos (wavy hair)
    I cannot always wash my hair upside down (water runs into my nose and eyes)
    I forget deep conditioning
    I forget cold rinse (it's not so bad, I have low to medium porosity)
    Rules I try to keep (I am still transitioning/experimenting and my hair is not damaged at all):
    Keep my hair up at night
    Avoid silicones if possible
    Combing only when wet and slippery (in one video you said it should feel like seaweed, I took that advice)
    Styling when dripping wet
    Using microfibre towels only
    Washing less frequently (2 times a week, before cgm I washed my hair every two days)
    I learned a lot from you!! Thanks

    My hair gets so tangled by the end of the day. I have no idea how to fix it besides soaking my whole head and brushing it again with leave in conditioner. There are 2 sections of my hair on the underneath part on the sides that are super dry and breakage prone, while the very center back section underneath is super shiny and soft. The dry sections get so gnarly looking after a few hours, sometimes before my hair is even fully dry. This hair journey is tough 😞

    I’m a few months into the CGM, but I’ve always used very little heat on my hair, only straightening once or twice a year or so, and only washing one or twice a week. My main difference in routine is just in the products I use. They’re all curly girl friendly, except I just recently decided to start using hairspray again. I don’t know if there is such a thing as a curly girl hairspray. Oh, and I use t shirts to towel off my hair and sleep on a satin pillowcase. I really haven’t noticed any extreme difference between my hair before and now, but I keep doing it because it’s still early to give up, but also because I actually enjoy working with my hair now; before I hated everything about it.

    How do you detangle your hair in days between shampoos? Do you get it soaking wet everyday to detangle it? Because I tried sleeping with protective styles such as a pineapple, but it doesn't keep my waves looking good and I get a lot of knots on the top of my head. How do you do it hahaha? I really do think it's trial and error and some are different. I never read the CG book and just kept away from silicones, sulphates, and parabens. I actually recently used a sulphonate thinking it was fine and my hair HATED it. It took a couple of weeks to get my hair back to normal. I definitely brush when wet; I've tried detangling other ways but it just seems impossible. HOW DOES ANYONE DO THAT?! What I love about CG is the my hair is no longer crunchy, hard, and full of product build up. I actually try not to use any styling products and for a couple of months did Water Only Hair Washing and my hair looked AMAZING. (I'm a 3c)

    As someone with thick, low porosity hair, it can take up to 9 hours for it to dry after a shower, so letting it air dry just isn't an option at least part of the time - and if you add a gel, it takes even longer. Diffusing without heat takes AGES - I mean, it takes FOREVER on high heat, but FOREVER and a DAY on low heat - so obviously it isn't realistic to let it air dry or use low heat. I'm also finding that since moving to the south, any product build up makes my hair FRIZZ to the max, so I think I'm going to go back to sulfates on a regular basis... in fact, I may just go back to the shampoo conditioner combo I used to use that had *gasp* both sulfates and silicones and drying alcohol... my hair looked way better then.

I didn't have an acne problem until I changed my hair routine so I'm just assuming that's what is causing the acne. I wash my hair every 3 days, I change my satin pillowcase then as well and I wear my hair in a pineapple or medusa clip it to keep it off my face at night. I haven't watched yet, but let me guess what you're going to say: you're not CG because you use sulfates and brush your hair wet. There are different rules for wavies. We get more buildup and it does need to be cleaned off with sulfates every few weeks. And there's nothing wrong with gently detangling in a way that does not cause breakage. Also the updated CGM is not that strict, and there are many variations that work for different people. True CGs don't insist that everyone wash with conditioner.
    *Update: yup I was right. The beauty of CGM is that you can totally pick and choose what works for you. It's not like the hair police will kick in your door if you do something different!

      I highly doubt it. I follow cgm for more than a year now (but still using sulfates most of this time due to SD), but situation didn't change much after transition: hair in the back is still 2a (barely have any wave, layered cut doesn't really help), on the sides it's 2b-2c, and some 3a pieces around my face. And it seems like it's not only different curl patterns, but different hair porosity too
