  • With so many shows and movies, getting into Star Trek now can be very daunting. So I have done my best to put together a watch order for you. This is combined with a visual timeline to help you understand the timings a little better. Hope you enjoy

I chose to introduce my Stars Wars-loving son to Star Trek (when he asked) by having him watch each series in Star Date Order. While not always chronological, but it provided him a very good foundation to start with. It wasn't necessarily the best way to accomplish it... but he loves ST now just as much as he loves SW.

In chronological order Star Trek First Contact. (Movie No. 8) has to be watched after you've started watching season 4 of Deep Space 9. Worf and the Defiant just don't fit otherwise.

Star trek TOS is the reason, we have it all... William Shatner is the benchmark to compare all captains. I like CGI versions too. But then series like STAR TREK TOS, Lost in space, the twilight zone, etc have there own value. They have inspired these newer versions.

I like the movie Star Trek Beyond as a replacement for the final 2 years of the 5 year journey of TOS. It's the only film in the Kelvin timeline that felt like an actual Star Trek plot.

Great explanation. Since I hadn’t seen the show, I was confused as to which timeline Discovery followed & where it fit in. The way Picard ended has me back into Trek.
Also, I really enjoyed the Kelvin timeline, and how they explain its existence. It’s a cool way to make it canon without changing or messing with the main universe.

Watching them randomly is best option as they were made separately and should be watched as made. Reverse order is a good idea as you can get historical nuance more emphatically. The optimistic portrait of humanity is pure sci-fi…

My husband wanted to introduce me to Star Trek and decided to watch it in the chronological order. So we started with "Enterprise" but after watching the first season I said it was boring. We stopped watching it and after a couple of years my husband made the second attempt at my ST introduction and he played TNG and I LOVED it!!! Later we came back to ENT and then I was able to appreciate it more, as I understood all the Easter eggs and references to other series.

This may have to be revised, after the events of Strange New Worlds episode Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, showing that SNW (and also Enterprise, Discovery, and Picard) are in a new timeline created after First Contact. The NX-01 Enterprise didnt exist in The Motion Picture, the XCV-330 Enterprise was featured as the first Enterprise. After events of First Contact, the XCV-330 no longer exists, replaced by the NX-01 after Dr. Cochran saw the Enterprise-E and helped design the NX-01 (why they are similar). Reason why the Temporal War happened in Enterprise series as the NX-01 wasn't supposed to exist in the first place. These are also reasons why technology is more advanced in SNW and Discovery than it was in TOS. Also why the Eugenics Wars happen in the 2020's, not the 1990's. So maybe the best way to watch is in actual release order, except Picard can be watched after DS9/VGR.

"Lower Decks, many don't consider it cannon" I personally never heard that opinion before, and it's funny because I would actually say that about Star Trek: The Animated Series, as I know many who don't consider that cannon, in fact there was a time in the 90's when it wasn't considered cannon per Roddenberry's request. But of course both are officially cannon now.

  • @thephoenixfoundation8095

Loved your episode, however if your gonna watch them in release order you'd have to start next generation after star trek IV the voyage home, then after the first two seasons of TNG watch the movies V and VI, then around season six of TNG start DS9 as there are a few crossovers, then after the first two seasons of DS9 start voyager and then any point after that the remainder of the films and Enterprise, I agree with most of what you said and really enjoyed your show. Thanks for it.

  • @Qermaq

This was good. Been watching since about 1970. I would advise anyone who has not seen anything:
All the animated is optional, including the one in the early '70s. It's good, not necessary.
The '60s show's later seasons had some weak writing and stories, and some of the depictions are quite dated to the degree that if you're triggered by old timey stuff just skip it. But that's where I started back in the day, waiting for episodes to appear in syndication. I had a notebook of TV Guide listings of the various episodes as a kid. you'll definitely have a favorite episode.
Next Generation's first season or two have a lot of klunker episodes. They get better mid to late season, and some decry season 7 but I think they did what they had to do to wrap the show pretty darn well. You'll definitely have a few favorite episodes.
The main movies are all at least ok. None are bad. Most are great. and a few are awesome. Overall they're all worth it to some degree. The JJ stuff, I saw it, didn't register as being Star Trek. Like seeing your teacher at the drug store.
The rest is kinda up to you. All of it is reasonably good with dips here and there. Always high aspirations, so you might be more easily let down, but that's the cost of quality.

1 Star Trek The original series
2 Star Trek the animated series
    3 de first 6 movies
    4 Star trek Enterprise
    5 Star Trek discovery ( season 1 and 2 only )
6 Star Trek strange new worlds
7 Star Trek the next generation
8 Star Trek deep space nine and voyager I should watch at the same time one episode of voy one of ds9 and I also should watch the 7th , 8th and 9th movie somewhere between ds9 and voyager where you want to
    9 Star Trek nemisis
    10 Star Trek lower decks
    11 Star Trek prodigy
12 the 3 jj Abrahams movies from the kelvin time line

I've been slowly re-watching the entire Star Trek franchise, in order of release, over the last 3 or 4 years (I'm not a binge watcher, I can't bust through an entire series in a week, so yeah, this is taking me a while). I started with Star Trek: The Original Series, then the 70's animated series, then on to the Next Generation. And now I'm about a 3rd of the way through Deep Space Nine. I skipped over the first six movies featuring the original cast (as an 80's kid/90's teenager, I just watched those too many times, I don't need to revisit them), but I am watching the Star Trek: Next Generation movies.
Maybe I wasn't a "diehard" enough fan, but I do enjoy stumbling upon an episode I've never seen before (I watched Next Generation and the rest of the 90's shows as they premiered, but you do miss the occasional episodes, and even some that you never caught in syndication reruns). There were maybe 5 to 10 episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation that I'd never seen before that blew my mind. I'll just give a couple of examples: Season 2's "Loud as a Whisper" and "The Schizoid Man". Never saw those until re-watching the series on Netflix. This has been a fun revisiting of the classics these last 3 or so years. I'll make my way to watching stuff like "Discovery" and "Lower Decks" eventually. :-)

Lower Decks has a crossover episode with Strange New Worlds… how could it POSSIBLY not be canon?

people dont see it canon because its a over exaggeration and more of a parody of trek and a cartoon and tho made for adults its childish af. yea its overall story is canon but 1 its not important and 2 alot of the goofs and how things happen arnt cannon and so people dont see it as cannon.
i mean in the show the characters are wacky and loud and very over the top in lower decks and constantly making "adult" jokes but in strange new worlds they are goofy but alot more normal and reserved basically proving they dont actually act like that and its just for show

Awesome, thank you. mind you I do not think Picard is in the main timeline......anymore that is. Not since Star Trek: Generations. To elaborate. Once Picard went into the Nexus it gave him what he really wanted. That is what the Nexus does. Picard is still in the Nexus. Another reason I think that is the case was in Star Trek: TNG S01 "We're always have Paris" . It is pointed out by an old girlfriend that he saves, the reason Picard chose Star Fleet over her was that he thought a Life with her would make him ordinary. Like everyone else. Picard wanted to be special. Not really want to settle down and have a family. Once Picard got stuck in the Nexus it gave him a family at first because it saw Picard's memory of Renee. However it then corrected and ended up giving him what he really wanted. To be the Hero, with that help of the best Captain in StarFleet history. Pcard can never be truly be happy. So the nexus gives him an entire new timeline where the Enterprise Crew all survive and Captain Kirk dies a Hero. I could be wrong, but I do not think so

This is easy. You watch TOS first. Then you watch All 6 original Movies. Then its TNG. Next you watch DS9 to the end of season 3 i believe before watching Generations and then finish DS9. Then its Voyager. You can watch First Contact and Insurrection somewhere in there or wait until you're done with VOY. After those then its Nemesis. Last you watch ENT or skip it altogether. And that's pretty much how you watch Star Trek.

TOS defines Star Trek. CPT Kirk was the best CPT and Chris Pine did an excellent job bringing Kirk back to the Screen. imho , if you do not watch TOH, you simply are not an actual Trekkie. The next best series and CPT is the Sisko, DS9. Then, comes Voyager, with CPT Janeway. TNG and CPT Estrogen was sufferable, but to it's credit it gave us Miles Obrien and Worf, as Characters worth carrying forward and in regards to earned respect. In all fairness, I have only watched some of the Cartoon series, none of the Books, and none of the other additions. Just one Man's opinion.

Lower Decks is most-certainly canon! I'm a life-long Trekkie, nearly 40-year fan. But I always recommend skipping TOS. I usually can't even get into it. I recommend people start with Wrath of Khan or Lower Decks (gotta tag the room). My 14yo daughter loves Lower Decks, and got into the Kelvin movies, TNG and DS9 from that.

@@skivijimmy well, I was born in '84, and have viewed EVERYTHING Star Trek from TMP-onward to an staggeringly exhausting-degree. I'm definitely a life-long Trekkie. What you said is akin to saying you cannot be a life-long fan of Super Mario Brothers, because they didn't play the original Donkey Kong in an actual arcade. For some people, no matter what it is, we cannot get into certain things. No matter how much we love the franchise as a whole. Like Spock said... "Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end of it." As-to is-true that TOS is the beginning of Star Trek, not the end of it.

never suggest a new fan to watch it in order of release, they will never get into it because its so old
always suggest new TV series or Moveis to start with if they enjoy it they will seek out older titles and it will be easier due to interest of lore and characters.
i started with next generation and hated it because its aged, watched the newer tv series and enjoyed it, continued to watch it till i started Next gen again and enjoyed it.

Much simpler if you cut out most of first season and a half of next generation except for the Big Goodbye, Skin of Evil, The conspiracy and the Neutral Zone , Where Silence has Lease, A matter of honour, Q-Who?, Samaritan Snare, The emmissary, Peak performance and then after the clip show you can start watching them all.
No Enterprise. No Discovery. Maybe season one of Picard? Stay away from Brave New Worlds
Lower Decks is mostly nice clean fun and despite a few early problems Deep Space Nine is mostly entertaining and watchable.
Really cuts down your wasted time if you triage this stuff first. Lot of non-Star Trek dreck in this pile of shows.

I can’t disagree more about skipping TOS. Without TOS, you wouldn’t have ANY other Star Trek shows-including TNG, for there wouldn’t be a next generation without a first one to begin with.
Many modern Trek fans were not around when TOS was on, and the years following its cancellation. For close to a decade, Star Trek fans continually wrote letters (remember them???!!!) to everyone and anyone who might listen, to bring back Star Trek. Eventually, they got their wish with Star Trek: The Motion Picture-a film that never would have been made without TOS and its fans. And the film that started it all for the movie franchise. And I mean all the Trek films that followed, not just the TOS based films. I can go on, but I’ve made my point. If you want to know more Trek history, I suggest you do your own research. That way you can see for yourself.
Does TOS look dated? Of course it does. That’s part of its charm: watching how they saw the future in the 1960s. Since they didn’t have much real technology to work with, they concentrated on the stories and the characterizations. Today’s Trek and all other sci fi franchises rely too heavily on special effects and looking like films instead of TV shows (which is what they are to begin with). They’re also too dark. Good drama doesn’t have to look like they didn’t pay the light bill to get its point across.
And right here I am going to make a statement that I’m sure I’ll be blasted for, because it’s anathema for die hard modern Trek fans: there actually is a “Trek” series out there that is bright, hopeful and is everything Star Trek originally set out to be. It’s called THE ORVILLE. ‘Nuff said. (OK, let the attacks begin!!!)
I hope you see more now the importance of TOS as it fits within Trek canon. You can’t ignore it!!!

      @Theonetruewonderfly ปีที่แล้ว

On the "skipping the original series" debate, maybe it's less that "you should skip the original series" and more "a third of the original series episodes are skippable". Too many episodes where they are visiting planets and the population all looks human, and they're even reliving history exactly like Earth (like the one with the Roman Empire, or the one where they are on a planet of kids but it looks like present day Earth), too many episodes of God-like beings, too many time travel episodes which were just an excuse to use other Hollywood sets. I don't mind 1960's special effects, I do mind episodes where it just looks like they're going through the motions and things are getting stagnant. Its not limited to the original series. Arguably there were always 2 or 3 episodes per season in "The Next Generation" that were like "Yeah, I could've skipped that." But with the original series, it feels like we could've done without a third of the series (not just one or two episodes per season).

    • @7JANEWAY
      @7JANEWAY ปีที่แล้ว

@@Theonetruewonderfly As for how many episodes someone should skip of any series is entirely arbitrary. Each person will have their own number of episodes of any series that they don’t like and so they will say “skip this number”.
I am not going to say that every TOS episode was great. In particular, the third season of TOS pales in comparison with the prior two seasons. But as with everything else, you need to take TOS in context. Part of that context is the time period (the 60s) that it was produced. In comparison with other sci fi tv shows of the time period (such as Lost In Space, as just one example), TOS was intelligent, well written for the most part, and well acted (Shatner’s woodenness not counted). And as I said, it paved the way for ALL future Star Trek, starting with the original animated series, TNG, and on up to the current Trek series.
So, in the proper context, my point stands. TOS, while far from perfect, should never be ignored when one wants to get into Trek. Even the weaker episodes have their place in Trek canon, as they add to the background story of all further Trek series.
And that was my point to begin with.
