  • Cory crashes a lot. So, she's asked me to put a protective film on her bike to minimize scratches on her bike's frame. I went ahead and turned it in to a how-to video. I hope you find the video useful, and if you do, don't forget to leave a like. For more MTB related videos, don't forget to subscribe.

    *Just a heads up, it's better to use a hair blower than a heat gun. The heat gun runs very hot, and if you're not careful, you might damage the wrap or even a carbon frame. If you do use a heat gone, run it on the lowest settings and only do very quick passes. Do not linger on an area.*

    Great Video. I like the use of the paint brush. Great Idea. What was the triangular box in the front part of the frame, and what kind of water bottle cage/bottles were those?

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Canyon makes little storage boxes for the front triangle of some of their bikes. The bikes come with bolt holes in the front triangle specifically for their storage boxes only. The water bottle cage is called the _Canyon Eject Hydration System._ You can buy it on the Canyon site. It's great for tiny frames with little room for a full sized bottle. Cory still uses it on her extra small Juliana Strega(Santa Cruz Nomad v4).

    Hi this is an awesome video. Question: Isn't the 3M already an adhesive and sticky? Won't the soapy water render the adhesiveness of the 3M useless? Thanks!

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I used to think that too. But no, the soapy water just allows you to easily adjust it, as soon as you squeeze out the water, it becomes very sticky again. Even more so once you run a hair dryer over it. Also, keeping your fingers wet keeps the inside from getting dirty and marked with finger prints all over the place. Doing it dry leads to nothing but frustration. If you have a stubborn corner, just run the blower over it a little and hold it down for a few seconds with your finger. It'll stick. You're just gonna have to trust me on this one. Good luck on your project. 🙂👍

      Thanks, man. The squidgy I used is just something I had in my tool box. An old debit card with a paper towel folded over the edge works great though. I'm sure there's a matte finish one somewhere on Amazon. Also, if your bike is a plain color, you can just use a solid vinyl wrap. I use black on the black parts of Cory's bike. That way, you don't have to worry about bubbles or dirt showing through the clear wrap.

Can't go wrong with buying extra though. If you ever have a bad enough crash to damage the wrap, you'll have extra to replace it. Cory had a bad crash a couple months ago. Looked like a rock chipped the carbon fiber on her top tube. When I removed the clear protection, I was happy to find that there actually was no damage to the frame. The protective wrap did its job. I put on some new protective wrap on her top tube, and the bike is good as new.

      Nope. I've had to peal up a piece to replace it after a crash a few times, never had the paint come off with it. The wrap pulls up similar to phone screen protectors but a tad more sticky. • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's very good quality. It can last the life of the bike if you don't have a really terrible crash. It doesn't peel off on it's own. You have to pick at it with your fingernail to get it started.This stuff has been on Cory's bike for about a year and a half now, and it still looks great. You can't even tell it's there. I only had to redo the one on the top tube once after Cory had a bad crash. It looked like the carbon fiber was chipped, but after I removed the 3m tape, it turns out there was no damage. Only the tape got dented. So it did a great job of protecting the bike. I peeled it off easily and installed a new piece, and now it looks like new again.

You can always cover the bigger scratches with an opaque wrap. I like to use little patches of carbon fiber vinyl wrap for deeper scratches. It looks cool. I have clear wrap on both our bikes. The wrap looks completely invisible. You have to use the soapy water method shown in the video. It keeps fingerprint marks from getting on the inside of the wrap, and you get perfect flush contact of the wrap to the frame. Dry wrapping always looks terrible. A properly done wrap job should be unnoticeable.

    If it's good enough for a bike, it's good enough for a car.

      Same thing happened to me with my new Meta TR. Ended up redoing it all. Best to do it when you have some spare time and not in a hurry. Also, keep dipping your fingers in the soapy water. That makes it a heck of alot easier. Good luck. 👍

      @@dukeofmtb cheers mucker... Yeah my first kit was a sticky one so there was no room for adjustment, it looked like a crisp packet once on so I just ripped it off. Now got to clean off the sticky gloop. Happy days.
