In my opinion Bee Gees are the best group ever existed. Been a fan since 1974 and still am. Barry’s voice is incredible and Robin sounds like an Angel. There isn’t any others even getting close to the sound of those guys. There youngest brother Andy was also amazing. If you haven’t listened to him you definitely should do so. Today they don’t do music like this anymore but thankfully we always have Bee Gees and Andy’s music. I absolutely love those brothers ❤️❤️❤️
Even people who aren’t into The Bee Gees genre can’t deny they are masters of harmony and genius songwriters. I personally love all their music spanning their long career.
I love Barry's ununciation and emphasis on this song. He's almost whispering, except where he opens up on "breaking us DOWN" and "they should all just let us BE." The conviction is so strong yet it's so subtle. The BeeGees are so overlooked and it's a shame that they were dismissed because "disco sucks." First, it doesn't, you wouldn't have MJ's "Billy Jean" without "Staying Alive." Second, they have an amazing catalog spanning decades with multiple styles. I'd love to see you break down more of their songs, especially some of their falsetto work.
This song is a masterpiece. Great job Ken as always. The fact that you singled this one out is important though so younger music lovers can discover an absolute masterwork.
Since I was young my parents listened to the Bee Gees. I didn’t think much of them because I grew up listening to them, but years later when I started to want to sing I rediscovered them and finally understood just how good they were. I’ve been practising singing to their songs for years now and I still haven’t grown tired of them, everytime I sing these songs I discover something new about the songs, the Bee Gees or myself. They made so many hit songs that if you are to cover their legacy you won’t be done under a few hours. I’m all for it though 👍
Not only lovely voices and angelic harmonies but prolific song writers 👍🏻 how many songs had these guys written not only for themselves but countless other artists ? Phenomenal career 👍🏻👍🏻
Too Much Heaven would be another one to analyze. Big Bee Gees fan here, listened to all their albums and love most of them, know all their popular songs as well as their not so famous deep cuts, but Too Much Heaven will always be my favorite Bee Gees song. Fantastic instrumental and harmonies, one of the best R&B songs of all time, written and performed by three European bros - truly an incredible group. I hate to say this because a lot of people say this about their favorite groups to try and seem special, but I truly think the Bee Gees, as musicians, are underrated. They weren’t just a disco act but amazing songwriters and melody writers (in fact, they only ever wrote a few disco songs). They deserve to be mentioned when talking about the greatest writers of all time.
I love the beegees Ken great group their harmonies and falsetto sounds such a great group the best when it came to disco music beegees are awesome absolutely love this song so beautiful I love this one and too much heaven beautiful ballads Ken 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
What is so amazing to know is they had no music lessons and they couldn't read music. How do you write great songs when you can't read music? They had such internal talent that all this was possible. I've loved them since I was a teenager and I'm in my sixties now. I sad saw the loss of 3 of the brothers. I hope they are all resting in peace. We greatly miss them all. I wish music today was like this. Sadly it isn't. Auto correct and electronic clean up is todays music. Hardly anyone plays instruments anymore. I'd love to see you do a Bee Gees athon. Thanks for doing this Ken. Stay safe and take care.
Well, there were songs and music before there were written notes and music theory. Barry once told about orchestras (presumably meaning orchestra conductors) telling them they couldn't construct songs the way they sometimes did but they went ahead and did so anyway, to the great pleasure of millions. Of course an orchestra of professionally trained musicians playing the music of professionally trained composers is a thing of beauty but not the only route to beautiful music. These boys were just overflowing with natural talent that was best left to roam free wherever it took them.
As I’ve gotten older I’ve become more amazed at how incredibly talented those guys were. Their performance of Nights on Broadway on Midnight Special is absolutely stunning. Thanks for the vid!
The Bee Gees are disregarded by too many people because of Saturday Night Fever..... For the Whom The Bell Tolls is a heartbreaking lyric and a superb song to boot.... Best BG's track from the 90's..... Just look at the songs they wrote for everyone else. Wow and, thanks again Ken 👊🏼
So glad you picked this song, and that you're going into harmonies! The analysis of the melodic integrity and harmony embellishment at 10:28, and how they handle it, I found fascinating. I've long loved the vocal harmonies on the chorus here. Thanks!
Loved them for decades, since I was a young teen. First artist I ever loved so much I went backward in time to discover and equally enjoy their earliest works from the 60s. They wrote enigmatic lyrics, and had a sound like no other before or since. Just as you say Ken, BeeGees music took you on a sonic journey. Amazes me to this day they never read music or had theory knowledge, just a gift. There's clips of Barry working with a keyboard player (forget his name) using only the music in his head while the keyboardist 'translated' the changes into chords. I do believe it was this very song. Barry painstakingly corrected him bar after bar till he got what Barry was 'hearing'. RIP Andy, Mo and Rob. Thank you and big brother Barry for making one unhappy kid's life so much brighter.
Great song. They also did 'Too Much Heaven', which Brian Wilson referred to not as a song, but a place where people sing - Brian: “I remember when I heard ‘Too Much Heaven’ for the first time. I thought ‘that’s not a song, that’s not a record, that’s a place where people sing and I love going to that place.”
One of my favorite songs by them. Love the almost breathy vocals in the chorus. Just beautiful and exquisite. The soft yearning to be with the one you love and forget the rest of the world....❤️
Nobody I've ever heard has falsetto voice and range as Barry, Maurice and Robin have amazing voices too. And the songs all 4 brothers wrote are legendary, and since unfortunately loosing and, brothers kept pounding hit songs for other artists of all genres. Pure talent 🙏
Great episode today. The Bee Gees are part of the soundtrack of my life. I'm so thankful for their music. Nothing like it in today's music world. Your Bee Gee tracks are great!👍 🔨

And how when the sun shown through the window they came up with “I see your eyes in the morning sun”. It’s cool to listen to tape of he and Barry tinkering around with the song, coming up with lyrics!
Barry, Robin and Maurice wrote this song. Maybe Blue Weaver was talking about arrangement but he certainly did not write it and he must have been on crack if he said he did.
@@beeharbour he was the guy who figured out some of the magic connecting chords. I've heard the session where they were creating this song and it's amazing to hear how Blue Weaver just finds these magic chords on the suggestion of Barry.

If I could have been ANYONE in the '70's, I'd have been Barry Gibb. I was 7 in 1977 and my sister was 13 when 'Saturday Night Fever' came out and that whole phenomenon was born. Living in Northern NJ, the songs and the mood was right on our doorstep and I can still clearly remember hearing these songs endlessly on AM radio, Kasey Kasem's 'Top 40' countdown and of course the double album that my sister would endlessly blast from her upstairs bedroom against the wishes of my Dad!!. For my sister, it was this, KISS and the Who. My brother who would have been in college at this time was a 'Dead Head' and later introduced me to bands like Queen, Fleetwood Mac and others. Later in the mid '90's, my sister and I went to see the Bee Gees in central NJ (Garden State Arts Center) and they were remarkable. Stellar band (of course!!), self-deprecating, funny and just one iconic song after another. Barry knew how to hold an audience, play up his 'sex-symbol' status (without being obnoxious about it) and their voices were on! It was a privilege spending an evening with them (I also saw them perform a short set at the Atlantic Records concert in 1988) and just digesting and absorbing what they offered. I left that concert telling my sister that I would rank their catalog against anyone's. And I mean anyone's. IF you really think back and consider the output of music they had released for themselves and others from the mid '70's through the end of the '70's, it is astounding. No one will EVER have the run of hits and success they had in that time. They were so successful that the inevitable backlash would hit them throughout most of the '80's.
I recently saw a clip when The Bee Gees sung this song accappella and it was really spot on. Had this as an earbuck for weeks....i just managed to forget it...and now you bring it up again....How dare you ;-)
I love the Bee Gees, I really got into them in the mid-80s. We used to watch reruns of Sergeant peppers lonely heart club band the movie and I think it was Robin Gibb saying “oh darlin” end it was just phenomenal and I had heard their disco stuff and liked a few songs but was never really into them and then I started listening to some of their older stuff, there’s some unbelievable talent there, not just in singing but in general songwriting and the way they put everything together, it was very well orchestrated and just very well done. I guess the real magic was using harmony like an instrument but it was all phenomenal.
Thanks for covering this Ken….love your range of tastes. I played in heavy rock bands back in the day and listened to the Bee Gees and even Abba …yes to a Bee Gees marathon!
Thank you for bringing attention again to the BeeGees and their wonderfull music and voices. They do deserve more cred for what they have created an achieved. Hands down one of the best bands ever, regardless of genre. I think it was Beatles manager who once said about the BeeGees: you just can’t deny talent.
The fact they are brothers, it helped them to blend perfectly, not to mention they had been singing/writing together since they were young kids! They knew each other so well. It also may explain why Andy wasn’t part of the core group as he was even younger, after the trio had seen some success. Then all the tragedy that hit that family… so sad. But they were SO talented- love them! BTW- the name “BeeGees” was named after their first real manager, not the family. They were the “Gibb Brothers” before that. It’s commonly thought of as being “Brothers Gibb (BG)”, not the case.
Great video & thanks. Barry Gibb the last Gibb brotha left. Nights on Broadway was the song that made me go through their whole discography from the 80s up. They musically sounded way different before the 80s which didnt capture my ear but I always loved the falsetto, harmonies, & compositions in the 80s & 90s albums.
Love this song, great song and amazing voice ❤️🌹❤️🌹❤️ I tried to sing this song again and again 100 times and still couldn't make it but still love it. I will try more 😊💖
In my Opinion the bee gees were one of the best bands ever to grace the presents of a stage. def top 5 bands of all time if we are talking vocals. they all had different voices but blended so well together and the song writing was some of the best ever. I also thought it was amazing that they started out in the 60's and reinvented themselves in the 70's where they don't even sound like the same band. Name another band that has done that equally as well? The Gibb Brothers were on another level folks there will never be another. I know you said they started out and they were Kind of Corny but there 60's stuff to me was amazing. I actually like that more than the 70's bee gees but hey what can I say all Bee Gees era songs are impressive. You have to be great when Ken can't find anything to critique. Great Analysis Ken.
I was very blessed to have been in high school when this band really took off. I believe I grew up in the best ERA for all types of music. The stuff they're putting out now? I don't have a clue as to what to even call it.
I need to hear each brother's voice separately. I wish that was somewhere on TH-cam! With most harmonies, I can pick out each vocal line, but with these guys, it's so difficult. They blend so closely.
GREAT ON Ken, Best Lines ever written.......... In my brain I see your face again I know my frame of mind You ain't got to be so blind And I'm blind, so, so, so blind I'm a man Can't you see what I am? I live and I breathe for you But what good does it do If I ain't got you, ain't got? You don't know what it's like, baby You don't know what it's like
Their voices were “ literally” instruments…. so good! No music necessary. These isolated vocal tracks prove that.👍❤️
Music is needed too, and the writing is out of this world.

I LOVE the Bee Gees, and this is one of the best love songs ever made IMO
God Bless You, Ken! You're a musical genius yourself! Thank you for appreciating the Bee Gees in all their musical genius!
Yes, yes, yes to more Bee Gees!!!
You bet!
Great song and perfect vocals! Tkanks Ken.
You bet!
I recently saw a clip when The Bee Gees sung this song accappella and it was really spot on. Had this as an earbuck for weeks....i just managed to forget it...and now you bring it up again....How dare you ;-)
😁
I once saw a clip where Robin Gibb remarked about how people have gotten lazy about doing the WORK of writing good music and crafting it.
The Brothers Gibb were as good as any band ever .. just amazingly talented musicians ,song writers ,and performers .
You are right on excellent song writing. I find the songs of the 70's and 80's to be poetic.
Lovely harmony
Their music is like velvet to my ears. I love listening to these isolated vocals. Fingers crossed that you do a "Bee Gees-A-Thon!"
I agree everytime I hear the Bee Gees, I have to stop and listen. Excellent vocals!
Yes!
Bee Gees the best group ever. Barry GIbb is a masterpiece in ali aspectos. Spirit, soul ano body.Genius.
More thsn 1030 s ongs. WOW
They were the real deal, bravo to the writers of the song.
You made me really happy with this one, my dear friend Ken. Lots of love for you, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Big hug, man! ❤️♥️💖🌹💐🙏🏻😉😘
Ken listening to your appreciation and detailed description/breakdown of my favorite song made me a fan of your site ...
The next Broadway hit musical should feature the music of The Bee Gees!
Ken, Thanks for this post. It was a learning experience… to hear their vocal process; from the inside, out. Great video!
Awesome beautiful song
So happy you played and broke these apart for me to get a better analysis on the Bee Gees! Love the Bee Gees. Thank you!
I love Bee Gees's Stayin' Alive so much! 😊
Nelly xx :)
In my brain
I see your face again
I know my frame of mind
You ain't got to be so blind
And I'm blind, so, so, so blind
I'm a man
Can't you see what I am?
I live and I breathe for you
But what good does it do
If I ain't got you, ain't got?
You don't know what it's like, baby
You don't know what it's like
👍
Yes!! Great idea! A Bee Gees-A-Thon!!! Great idea! I have always counted them as my top two bands!
