  • I built a direct heat BBQ in this video. The inspiration came from Chuds BBQ's Chud Box. Check out Bradley's channel and his website. Link below. This direct heat cooker is a cross between a grill and a smoker, most comparable to a barrel type cooker. This was a lot of fun and puts out great food! Thanks for watching!

    Awesome build and great lookin cooker! Keep it up brother!
    Also let me know it you run into any problems with the rubber wheels being that close to the coals, I much prefer the rubber casters but I worry they may melt

      Thank you! I've cooked on it 4 times now with no issues regarding the wheels but it's been 40°F or colder each time. Might be an issue in the summer when it's a bit warmer. If they melt I'll definitely let you know! I did get some droop in the bottom plate during the first cook due to heat. I've since reinforced the bottom with some angle iron. Seems to work pretty good. I'm currently building a "Mini Chud Box". Video coming soon! Thanks again for the inspiration!

      Tractor supply has fire bricks for like $2/per. They're great insulators and really help any fire... Smoker, fire place whatever. I use them in my smoker In place of water pans and to diffuse heat. You guys could line the bottom of your chud pits. I'll be welding one up soon too.

    Awesome build, I’m planning on building one of these this summer. I’m thinking of adding a removable deflector half way between the coals and the cooking rack. I want to use it as a smoker and a direct cooker, thoughts?

    • @fabmakebuildcook6274
      @fabmakebuildcook6274  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The deflector might be beneficial for longer duration cooks but I'm only guessing. The direct heat is what makes these things what they are. I personally burn coals and wood in this and love the flavor it provides. Plus cooking on an open flame is pretty sweet. You can always build your fire on one side and have your meat on the other so it'll be kind of a indirect cook. Something worth trying anyway. Hope it works out!

  • @nordicwilly6650
    @nordicwilly6650 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome build! I could learn a lot from you. Can't wait to see some of your other videos. When refueling that direct smoker several hours into cook, are you burning down splits to coals (pre-burning) before putting them in the firebox? I would think throwing unlit split into direct smoker might spike the temp too much. Many thanks!

    • @fabmakebuildcook6274
      @fabmakebuildcook6274  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Willy! I typically just keep adding lump charcoal and small wood chunks to the coal bed. The wood chunks flare up a little bit but not spectacularly. The lump will catch pretty quick as well and help maintain heat.

    Good job mister. The video popped up after I watched Chudman's mini Chud box build this week. I'm making a small version down here in South Africa, maybe slightly smaller than his next month . One question how much smoke you notice pulling out yours? You even had it l lit up inside. My concern is upstairs neighbour's as mine will sit on a balcony outside.

    • @fabmakebuildcook6274
      @fabmakebuildcook6274  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Daniel. If you just use charcoal there will be minimal smoke. Adding wood will generate a lot more smoke if not pre-burned down to coals. While cooking, the juices dripping off the meat into your coals will flare up and provide some smoke but it shouldn't be too bad. Would be similar to a weber kettle for the most part. Have fun building and good luck!

    Good to see another Minnesotan bbq guy. This summer I’m planning on building my own direct heat hog cooker similar to yours. On mine I think I might do something different with the smoke stacks. On some of the cookers I’ve used that are that style I’ve had problems with hot spots by the smoke stacks. Have you had an issues with that?

    • @fabmakebuildcook6274
      @fabmakebuildcook6274  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Fred. I personally haven't noticed any hot spots on the cooker but haven't been monitoring that closely either. Typically I do two zones while cooking. The coals/fire on the left side and nothing on the right so the whole left side is a hot spot comparatively. How are you planning on doing your stacks? Good luck on your build and hope you knock out some delicious BBQ!

      @@fabmakebuildcook6274 $1200 isn't bad considering the full sized Chudbox is $4000. I'm going to start small and attempt the Chudtable first but make it about 24" longer to accommodate a Blackstone On-the-Go griddle-burner combo to have a nice mobile outdoor cooking station.
