Dad and I were just now discussing using ATF in one of our old farm tractors to clean out the fuel tank and injection pump. We couldn't remember exactly why it was supposed to be used in old diesel systems, now you answered it! Rust removal. Thanks for saving me a internet search! :)

You just need acetone and ATF no need for the other stuff. 50/50 mix.

Good job. So you are now the mad scientist of the day. One thing I find to be a great rust breaker is a propane torch. A bit of heat seems to do wonders as well. Keep on keeping on.

Hello Chris, may I suggest trying this 1 unit ATF + 1 unit Acetone + 0.5 unit Muratic swimming pool acid added last not on aluminum. Another is phosphoric acid air conditioner coil cleaner. Your first two do the penetrating while the acid does heavy rust removal. An alternate is to wire brush the exposed threads just don't run rust against closed treads. Upon reinstalling use anti-sieze compound or auto door latch slip stick especially with aluminum. If you're concerned about fastener loosing apply a dab of finger nail polish to fastener and held piece. A set of grip-tite sockets is a big help and avoid using a ratchet wrench on hi-torqued fasteners instead use a breaker bar. Of course pneumatic tools do wonders if the fastener isn't like to break. While in engineering classes most normal fastener are correctly torqued 1/4 turn after bottoming out hi-strength equal 1/2 turn. Remember bolts are in the best elastic range at proper torque. Newer engines use rotational degrees on head bolts instead of torque to set elastic holding force.
Last if possible applying heat with electric heating gun or torch to part away from penetrating oil will make the penetrating mix more reactive.

So it works OK, all I need now is a tank big enough to dunk an Austin A40 in, if you come across one at a boot sale you know who to call.

I would of thought your mix is more expensive then plus gas. best to use old atf or old diesel engine oil, diesel engine oil has detergent and when mixed with a drop of paraffin and atf seeps in everywhere... but again as long as it works its good.
