As someone who hasn’t heard of Sleaford Mods before this Album, I think this Album is really good and it made me want to listen to more of their catalog.
I met him at a signing when Eton Alive came out and had a chat with him for 10 minutes. Both him and Andrew were absolutely love and properly down to earth. They were playing in my town that night and put me on the guest list for free when they found out I couldn't get tickets.
Love a yank telling us what to think about class in the UK! What Williamson is talking about goes back to Blur and all that, probably earlier examples too, it's an established trend here. Sleaford Mods being the Suede in the equation here. Yeah there's probably much more important targets Jason could be going after, but Anthony's clearly an outsider here chewing him out from a place of ignorance, thinking this is petty "who's more authentic" beef. It's not about that, it's about cultural representation, there's enough yuppies in the south England post-punk scene already. It's probably a more personal issue for him than a lot of the politics, being a performer in that milieu himself, so it's no wonder he's more passionate about it. "Hmph, just get along already!" says the bloke who doesn't have to deal with it.
Nudge it is such a good song. What are you talking about? I love how it goes from the talking / rapping to the melodies which, in my opinion sound so quintessentially British - old punk - working class, which is something that you can't hear so often anymore. The addition of Amy Taylor sounds great also. I didn't know it was about that other band. It makes sense now.
williamson is dead on about IDLES as well, they are rich suburban white kids virtue signaling essentially and selling music that appeals to poor people, it reeks of fakeness and pretension and Williamson has a right to not like it, he really was poor and working class himself.

Man dude, after hearing Mork n Mindy and seeing the album cover, i thought the Mods were gonna bust out with a crazy good album here in a totally new style, but no, Mork n Mindy is a one-off as far as anything sounding new. HOWEVER, I think you're so wrong about Eton Alive!!!! That record kicks ass!!!! Easily my favorite from them. Can't believe you see it as them painting themselves into a corner. The production on that record is outstanding! every beat pops out to me, every song is catchy, his singing is even good! Great melodies and tunes. Kebab Spider, Big Burt, When You Come Up to Me, and the beat on Flipside??? cmooonnnnnn
This hovers at being their second best record. I’ve actually listened to this more than any of their others. “I don’t rate you” rips, insane beat. Hope they pull in some more legit 90s rave influence. (The Oribital single is a hint)

As a big fan of the Mods, the last two albums miss one thing more than anything - Williamson’s brutal anger and rage at the life under Tory rule. Covid and our country’s handling of it should have been like dropping a bottle of lighter fluid on a lit gas hob but instead it’s for the most part like a re-hash of Erin Alive but with the swearing returning. I would say that Fearn is bringing a lot more to the table than he was before and since English Tapas has become a lot more creative. Great review as always
Couldn't agree more - it really feels like the well they've been drawing from artistically has dried up. As cliché as it sounds I have to wonder whether their success has softened them up because Jason's ire in particular feels more and more like a pastiche or as if he's just going through the motions of what he feels an SM track should be like. It's a shame because their earlier stuff really felt like something special but the last 2-3 years has just felt like them treading water when they could have and should have moved onto greener artistic pastures.
Wonder if this guy listens to these albums fully, some proper tunes here off an evolving SF , put it this way , the longer time goes by , the more I look forward to their new music

Grounds and The Lover in particular were particularly drenched with lyrics that often just equated to "I'm a bit sad Sleaford Mods don't like me". This isn't from the perspective of someone who hates IDLES by the way, I think Brutalism and Joy are two of the best records of the last few years, it's just that they got equally bogged down in the beef as well in my opinion

This review shows the fundamental problem with critics. Sometimes they just don’t understand what they’re looking at. Pearls before swine. This SM album is as good as anything released on either side of the Atlantic in the COVID years.

(Though Anthony seemed affronted by perceived, anticipatory comments that never materialized.) I think the rebuffs given to prior negative reviews might have affected him somewhat. Nevertheless, I loved this album and their output back to _Divide and Exit._ It debuted the incredible Billy Nomates and Amy is always a welcome addition. But I'm not out to convince anyone of _Spare Ribs'_ merits, as they're personal to me. I'm just a middle-aged man, looking at the comments section, and throwing a dissenting opinion into the ring.

Just read the original interview statements from Williamson, and I really think Fantano, as well as IDLES, have misconstrued them. They are cutting remarks, no doubt, but also entirely legitimate. Most of the offence boils down to being forced to encounter the conflictual reality of the political aesthetics of IDLES vs the aestheticized politics of Seaford Mods. Williamson says they all seem like nice lads, which is as much as anyone owes them out of courtesy, and then legitimately points out what they represent to him socially. If that's too much for IDLES to handle then it only further justifies Williamson's contention that their sense for politics is shallow and opportunistic, regardless of how unconsciously so.
I kinda agree tbh. The past 2/3 records have just lost it unfortunately. Key Markets is definitely their peak imo. I dont think they'll get better than that.

First Sleaford Mods I've heard. Caught a live version of Nudge It with Amy Taylor and it was fucking hypnotic and captivating. I like this weird shit. I like this album. It's not a 10 but it is way better than a 4. Revisit.

not to be that guy but i think its hard to understand the idles criticism if your not from the uk - think theres cultural thing at play that are hard to understand if you dont live in them. although the guy from idles seems nice - and is totally within his rights to talk about whatever he wants, theres something really patronising , tokenistic and naive about the WAY that he does it. To a lot of people, his lyrics just sound like empty words from a sheltered wealthy white straight English boy, who is trying to be "one of the good ones" but clearly doesn't understand the issues, or at least doesn't understand the way his approach will be perceived and therefor the problems with it (not his fault like, just a bit frustrating)
I enjoyed this record. Sleaford Mods are still very relevant in my eyes. Maybe not as good as some of their older stuff. I think their anger comes off in a more despondent tone and quirky manor these days as opposed to the more visceral quality of their earlier work. Personally I can appreciate both.
If anything, their last few albums and EPs capture the carrousel of the current sociopolitical landscape (or rather hellscape) in the UK, and for that, that sense of weariness in the album is very interesting to me.

Yeah, I had high expectations for Spare Ribs after Eton Alive, but the few (very) great tracks are outweighed by how forgettable the rest are.
I think usually Jason Williamson shines more on Sleaford Mods albums, but the production on this was the best part of it tbh

Ive only recently got back into there stuff and a couple of the songs from the new album are better overall than there past stuff in my opinion
its sonically more interesting but lryically tired from the repetition of there older lp's
