I am staying away from components like power supplies until supply chains stabilise.. I only want Japanese electrolytics in my power supply anyway e.g. Nippon Chemicon (e.g. EVGA).. and with the scamdemic having caused mess in supply chains, causing possible infiltration of fake and/or substandard or unsuitable parts.. I am staying well away. Gigabyte is a compan y I used to favour more for motherboards.. now because of this debacle I am wary.
Steve is forever burning bridges in the interest of protecting consumers, and he should be applauded, appreciated, and recognized for that. He is one of the few that is not scared to lose potential revenue to protect his community.
Well, those bridges don't stay burnt, since the PR jocks don't tend to stick around in one company for too long, so whatever sour feelings they might have about a media outlet tends to leave when the guy gets a new job. The bad news is that he might take the bad attitude with him to the new company.
I dunno about that. The GN Team is operating with the user's best interest in mind. I think GN will continue to develop, grow, and remain true to Steve's editorial direction. Just look at the move to the new work space, buying a fan testing device thingy, considering doing sound testing, hiring employees who are dedicated to GN and Steve. I could continue! The smell of the figurative bridges Steve is burning is much better than the smell of burning components. If a company get's their feathers ruffled up it is just because they have no other reply. And how Gigabyte replied just brings more shame onto themselves, on top of this PSU issue.
I used to work for a VRM manufacturer, And literally my job there was testing these components, CONSTANTLY slamming them against their current limits for hours at a time. I imagine other reputable manufacturers could say the same. In order for Gigibyte's PSUs to be exploding like this, they must have really, really fucked up, which in my mind means they really, really cheaped out and thought it wouldn't bite them until it did.
Good thing you said "literally". I 'd hate for anyone to think you were speaking rhetorically. Or hyperbolically. Or ironically. Seriously, thank you for making that distinction.
When you look at how they mixed components from different manufacturers, that for me is the root of a problem. Them using garbage components (and they are garbage, not because they are Chinese, Chinese manufacturers are capable of making excellent products but they will never say no if you want them to make garbage) isn't the issue, you can design around it, keep them in tolerance, have some headroom so they don't explode, but when you are grabbing anything with the roughly same value, thinking it would be fine, NOT TESTING IT PROPERLY, then you are in trouble. Lack of testing and/or negligence was the issue, and frankly, if they really wanted to be lazy, just buy from Nippon Chemi-Con and Intersil, they have image and business to lose if something explodes, much more than some unknown, interchangeable factory in China, full of Uyghur slave workers.
GN are not afraid because they do their homework...expensive test equipment and rigorous procedures.....it's how electronics should be done. GN you rock!
Why they should be afraid ? I wish to see more subscribers here. Unlike other 10M YT channels ( that focuses more on entertaining ) GN works only with facts that comes from rigorous testing.
"You know, Gigabyte, if you want to go to war, we can go to war." They sold you a grenade disguised as a power supply from which you have metal shrapnel in your hand. Sounds pretty war like.
That's not nearly as scary as the Nox tank which can manifest Tech Odin (or did he manifest the blow-off valve trigger?). Scariest of all are components that can mistakenly manifest Linus rather than Wendell.
@@Code7Unltd Copying's fine IMO, so long as there are improvements integrated into their own design/manufacturing, but they seem(ed) to forget that bit and instead make them worse (unless reliance on the nth dimension air supply that's only accessible in CAD can be determined an improvement).
NZXT: Boy we really screwed that up. Gigabyte: Hold our substandard exploding power supply... at your own risk and subject to zero liability or accountability from us.
The next move I think is GN testing the new power supplies. The labeled OPP is lower so they are less likely to fail. Some portion might, though. After that, they will contact CPSC. If CPSC agrees they will order Gigabyte to recall them.
DC load testing equipment is literally the correct way to test an issue like this as it removes variables. This is how Gigabyte themselves would have tested these power supplies when they were designing them.

I would suggest that instead of "This is how Gigabyte themselves would have tested these power supplies when they were designing them", it would be more accurate to say "This is how Gigabyte themselves SHOULD have tested these power supplies when they were designing them." LOL
The evidence would suggest that Gigabyte in fact did not test them,,, at all,,,, or if they did, they ignored the results and shipped this **** anyway.
I used to think they wouldn't bother to make it 80% gold unless it was decent. So I used gold/platinum/etc... as a measure of not sucking. sigh........ I wish newegg had an option to just simple look for "did it kill shit in my system? yes or no" and "did it explode? yes or no". Those are the only customer reviews I give a crap about. But it doesn't. So I have to dig through that.
I'd have to counter that. GN are the explosive experts, they produced explosions from products that Gigabyte apparently are incapable of achieving. Therefore, from my perspective, Gigabyte are the explosive noobs, GN the Pros.
Thank you Steve, and all the Gamers Nexus crew, for actually holding companies accountable. I'm proud to wear my GN shirt and tell others what you do both for the consumer and taking a stand against e-waste.
I can only agree and add my thank you GN (Steve) for doing what you do. These kind of faulty products need to be removed from the market, not only are they causing needless work for the customer to replace and likely cost, but are also potentially dangerous to the rest of your hardware and a fire hazard.
I'm proud for people who not only take a stand against e-waste, but put their money and time where their mouths are rather than shout empty platitudes about "muh environment". Reduce, reuse, recycle, and stop making trashy products...
At least they clearly demonstrate to me that they are unworthy of my patronage. I've only ever had like two GB products, and they've both been very underwhelming (their gpu performed below stock speeds, and I had a mobo that I thought was fine until I replaced it with Asus and a freeze bug went away. )
I hope that one day it becomes the norm that large corporations are fully transparent, and not blatantly lying to their customers. Or shifting blame away from them. Honestly I feel *way* more comfortable giving somebody my money after they admit to making mistakes and then rectifying them, instead of "wasn't me, you are doing it wrong, we are perfect". One day

Too much corporate malfeasance goes unpunished just because we go "ah, it's capitalism, that's just the way it is." NO, that's not capitalism, what we have today is cronyism.
Here's the problem: Even if this only affects these two models, the response of Gigabyte undermines their entire product line. If they aren't going to fix a problem of a couple of models of power supplies being a literal fire hazard, how can I trust they will adequately support ANY of their products? Making a single bad product doesn't reflect that badly on a company, refusing to respond appropriately is damning to the entire company.
So true... I can't imagine ANY enthusiast is EVER going to purchase a Gigabyte power supply after this debacle. Then again, I'm not sure many of us were buying them in the 1st place... or maybe that's just me. I tend to trust long-time veterans in the power supply industry such as Seasonic. I have a 750w Seasonic power supply in the machine sitting next to me that has been in 4 different builds and has been without problems for around 15 years now. It definitely wasn't the cheapest unit, but it was built with quality parts, over-engineered for its rated output, and is just as good now as when it was built. While I think the quality of some Seasonic power supplies today probably aren't as consistently good as they once were, it is still probably my go-to brand of choice.
@@thespiritofyoink I have one of their Aorus motherboards in my (AMD) system now. I'm pretty happy with it, so I'm not looking to rip it out... that said, when I do go to replace it at some point in the future, I'm likely to not use them again. This response taints the whole company.

Tripped my BeQuiet! PSU hundreds of times already, OPP, OV/CP (Crossfire Vega Liquid hits different), SCP, lightning, everything. Still with me after 7 years of torture. And i still have warranty. That's quality right there. Yes, it's a bit more expensive, but that usually makes a difference with electronics. You can try to save money anywhere on your PC, never try saving money on the PSU. BeQuiet is the only company i trust with PSUs nowadays. Built dozens of PCs with their PSUs and the only time one died was when someone dumped a drink on the PC. And they replaced that under warranty even tho they were told what happened. I'm sure, there are other companies producing good quality PSUs, but I'm not really willing to take a risk.

@@ishaukthedoc5686 Yup. And I unfortunately had a BeQuit! PSU fail within the first two years while at most using 80% of its rated power. And it died in idle. They replaced it with a newer version, which has also issues. I since then use my 9-10 year old psu I used before. And I will definitely switch to Seasonic when I finally manage to buy a new PSU for my main system. And just for context: the old PSu has 500W rated power (470 or so at 12V) while the BeQuit (Pure Power series) had 700W (with almost everything avail at 12V cuz its a DC-DC one). well the problem is that companies should maybe stick to what they are famous for and understand how to make : like gigabyte and asus back in the day were famous for their motherboards , enermax and seasonic for their power supplies (things were simpler 15-20 years ago) nowadays every company is going for expansion and diversification - which is fine as long as they don´t cheap out on their products . gigabyte using some unknown chinese company to make their power supplies in order to cut down the cost is really the issue here (appart from denial and going on an offensive about their mistakes) : (should they stick to reputable OEMs and entrust CWT , seasonic , delta , super flower or even FSP or other reputable company to make their power supplies this would not have happened but the problem is it would cost them more money .

As Steve said, companies are allowed to make mistakes, but they should own up to their mistakes. Yes, mining does put an unusually high load on everything, but if my PSU says "I can deliver 850 Watts" I want to be able to draw that. Not 850 Watts for five minutes - I mean 850 frickin Watts, m8.
Yeah. Gigabyte is just being cunts here and have never heard about servers. My personal server haven't been closed down for 8 month. And the only reason it went down that time was due to power failure in the city area I lived in.
I really appreciate the work the GN are doing for consumer protection. This whole business of companies, like Gigabyte, cutting corners, using inferior components and making consumers do the testing, has become common practice.
Oddly enough that is kind of how some bomb disposal works in the "controlled explosion". The difference being the control is controlled externally the break an internal structure.
"80+ Gold... has to do with efficiency asnd doesn't have to do with the power supplies exploding..." Well, Gigabyte may argue that once it has exploded it's extremely efficient as it stops consuming power straight away.
Not necessarily true, actually! Those transformers will keep sipping juice, even without a load. That gives them infinitely bad efficiency, as *all* power consumed is lost as heat
How different youtubers respond to stuff like this: Linus: We balance our need for sponsors with the benefit of consumers. @@Grimmwoldds and for Gigabyte your looking at MEIC as the OEM for these units I seriously wonder how much gigabyte had to do with the design, I assume ALOT considering how proud they are of these shit bricks to defend them and not just throwing their manufacturer (MEIC) under the bus
@@zacharytaylor8523 I would put money on MEIC having designed these for OEM, and probably shopped them around to various established vendors. Probably offered an extremely competitive price, leading some Gigabyte exec to believe they scored big getting in early with an established power brick OEM looking to break into the PSU market. The initial pricing they had for these likely included very juicy profit margins for both Gigabyte as well as retailers (hence why there seems to be such crazy deep inventory levels at a variety of retailers). Of course honouring a rock-bottom contract production price means MEIC had to start swapping various component suppliers out possibly just due to supply shortage issues, but also quite likely as a way to cut costs finding the cheapest suppliers that "met spec" on each component. This is fairly typical for low end budget units, and a good reason why PSUs for the most part are a "you get what you pay for" product in the PC space. Higher end units will have the designs specifying specific manufacturer/part numbers for various components (they may include multiple specific options, like the spec-equivalent alternatives from a few different high end Japanese capacitor manufacturers).

I was feeling a bit under the weather, but I just remembered that I don't have any gigabyte product on my PC and that made me happy, it's the little things you know
OPP is actually a low stress feedback loop, it senses the output overload and shuts down the input driver stage, it’s nothing like shutting off a relay under heavy load, it’s more like turning the off button on your TVs remote control. Gigabyte either screwed up the basic design (unlikely), or during qualification it set the trip level so high that the PSU was already in catastrophic failure before protection even activates.
Yes that's exactly what I am thinking as well. Simply the OPP trip level was set too high, so before the PSUs shut down, some of the components "severely reduced its lifespan" like Gigabyte stated. Which led to the explosions at 60% power usage. Too bad Gigabyte didn't just acknowledge the problem and then lower the OPP threshold, which HOPEFULLY prevents the lifespan reduction of components. On the other hand, if we really want to play with the words here, Gigabyte said "repeatedly", because GN actually tripped the OPP more than once. Not that it matters, you should be able to trip OPP multiple times without any damage to the PSU at all, but I just wanted to point that out.
The PSU design IS the problem, OPP is part of the PSU's design! Their OPP tested over 1.3x the rating, which wouldn't be bad if the components were even capable of meeting said rating, which you'd know if actually watched the video! Realistically, these are 360w PSUs pretending to be 500w PSUs, with an OPP over 750w. There was never any chance of it not failing catastrophically in use.
Gigabytes name is forever tarnished because of this fiasco. I will never buy a Gigabyte product again due to the way they have handled this. Had they just said you know what we made a mistake we are going to recall all units and refund anyone who purchased it. I would have been like you know what, you made a mistake but you owned up to it. Here nah they are just trying to sweep it under the rug, like its no big deal. My main thing is they could make other really good products, however because of this that will never matter. Keep on Keeping on, you're doing the work of legends.
Those blue labels should have been put lower on the PSU, now you can't see their glorious logo of their of course 100% safe and working PSU's. Give them the honor they want and always show their logo. p.s. As someone who has worked in the hardware industry I can honestly say that most of these certifications are simply bought and not acquired through testing.
This video was quite cathartic. It’s always nice to see someone rip a company a new one with facts and data. Also the power supply pops were placed perfectly. Good job video editor.
"But our exploding power supplies meet all the industry-standard certifications." Well, maybe that's a good sign that the industry-standard certifications need to be revised? Seriously, that's a little like saying "the Titanic had the exact number of lifeboats required by law" (which it did, since those laws were made when transatlantic liners were much smaller).
No industry certification can prevent a faulty or a bad product. Industry standards are pretty well designed, that's why cases like Gigabyte's here are a very rare occurrence.
Pretty sure the ones that blows up hasn't been CE Certified. Change a component and it has to go through the tests again, or atleast it used to be that way when I was in the biz. If Gigabyte started off with good quality components it might just gone good on the testbench, then they got greedy and sold the same PSU but replaced components.. So those certifications say nothing of they didn't send them in for test after stuff was changed inside. Could see a heavy fine coming their way if this turns ugly
@@zintoki8211 I hope they aren't using rebranded Seasonics, because my experience with their PSUs is that they like to die or have random issues that cause systems to lock-up under little load. The "Supernova" branding really fits well with EVGA PSUs.
Really appreciate the GN team's effort to investigate these problems, and gigabyte's bad response aside, it concerns me what these companies would have done if the issues were not brought to light (mostly) by GN.

@@bonusflaps1749 _no! the meaning of words can't just change organically over time!_ reeeeeeeeeeeeee

Thanks for doing both of these. I've had the same power supply for over 10 ears now, and it has continued to perform through several rebuilds of my system. At this point, I don't even think I could state what brand it is.
On a side note, if Gigabyte management thinks that 5 min is an extremely long time, I feel sorry for their life partners. :P
Gigabyte: You're using it incorrectly, it suppose to be used along side a fire extinguisher.
I'd love to see Seasonic, EVGA, and other big PSU brands pass these tests as examples of proper implementation of OPP et al.
It's not about the branding, it's about the design. You'd be looking at Seasonic, FSP, GW, CWT, et al.
@@Grimmwoldds and for Gigabyte your looking at MEIC as the OEM for these units
I seriously wonder how much gigabyte had to do with the design, I assume ALOT considering how proud they are of these shit bricks to defend them and not just throwing their manufacturer (MEIC) under the bus
Me sitting here with a EVGA Supernova breathing a sigh of relief
I believe they did these tests with known working brands before they did the Gigabyte ones.
I've only had a PSU blow on me once. It was some weird off brand. I then proceeded to replace it with the same model.

Same. Screw gigabyte at this point.
So OPP is supposed to perform a somewhat graceful shutdown of the unit?
@@emanwe01 Yep. They’re supposed to work BEFORE components fail. Looks like OPP never triggered in these PSUs.
I'm really not surprised with that...
Apparently they are meeting industry standards....for exploding power supplies.
Thanks for standing up for the consumers, Steve. God knows there's little enough of it going around in the US.
EVGA : oh crap our 3090 is dying. Lets send them replacement asap and do whats right

@@zintoki8211 oh based off only my recollection of their reputations those are good brands to be rebranding.
Obviously they would do nothing when they already have your money.
Because they keep claiming you're using DC load testing equipment, perhaps it's time to load up a dual RTX 3090 rig with a i9 11900k, rip some overclocking if it doesn't pop under stock settings and do it all on livestream.
