I agree. Furthermore, the trailer showed bits of that scene making some people believe it was going to be some sort of superhero/antihero film. The trailer was already playing with the audience's expectations. Part of the brilliance of this movie is that it involved everyone: actors, audience and critics.
I don't know, you guys are pretentious. I enjoy the likes of Birdman, Synecdoche New York, or Whiplash. I also like watching The Avengers, Mad Max, and Die Hard. Each movie delivers what it's meant to, and sometimes I'm just in the mood for the latter. I like watching thought provoking flicks as much as the next guy. But both my job and my hobbies involve me engaging with a lot of advanced math and complex programming architecture, which can be mentally exhausting. It's nice to shut off my brain once in a while when it comes to entertainment.

What's fucked up is, as critical as this scene is about this very concept, he looks REALLY good in the suit and still has energy. This is one of my favorite scenes; it’s the main character at his weakest (hung over, passed out on the curb), remembering himself at his best, right before standing on the ledge and contemplating suicide … but the action in this scene is exciting and kind of funny … keep in mind, in the end, the main character shoots his nose off, but his play is critically-acclaimed so he considers himself a success …. It’s funny!

Tropic Thunder was both the Vietnam movie Ben Stiller never got to do back when Vietnam movies were big and mockery of the actors who did get to do Vietnam movies and said that the preproduction boot camp they went through to look plausible was some deeply spiritual experience. The original script was supposed to be set in said boot camp and the actors all got PTSD as a result.
I once read a comment: "What a waste of time! I thought this was gonna be a superhero movie like spiderman or batman."
