    0:20 Great throw - also a great fall. Ukemi training is tedious as hell but it pays off.

      100%, but the kids in our club love training rolling and ukemi, they are happy to do 20 minutes in a 2 hour session, I make a circuit of barriers to roll and fall over, imaginative course, a stack of mats to jump/roll /climb etc. The strictest part of side to side ukemi is still needed but can be brief as its backed up with forwards roll side breakfall repetition and kids need monitoring etc re their body positions etc to keep true

    How do I get involved in this? Where can I find information on competitions?

    • @JudoLife
      @JudoLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      in New Zealand Judonz.org or IJF.org internationally, just type judo and your country name to find the local Federation and club lists

      @@JudoLife I looked online and it said there are between 40-50 million Judokas, but the amount of competitions doesn't seem to be anywhere near enough to support that many. Do most Judokas not compete? In the United States there are 250,000 HS and MS wrestlers, but they all compete. Thank you.

      Good point, yes it seems that judo has a lot of clubs that for one reason or another are not compelled to compete. I think that's just wrong too. The best way to learn is drills and checking it works via competing against other similar level judoka. The IJF is becoming unpopular because they screw with the rules too much.

      Just best to try it out, I guess. Different teachers and different clubs might result in very different experiences even within Judo.

      I did wrestling, judo, and jujitsu as a young man. Judo gives you tons of weapons from your feet, and they practice ground game. BJJ schools practice almost exclusively ground game. From a self defense standpoint, I give a monster edge to judo.
      Skirmishes end almost immediately after you take someone off their feet quickly. I say Skirmishes and not fights because I've never had someone escalate matters into what I would call a fight after taking someone off their feet quickly. They are usually stunned physically and mentally.
      Do you really want to pull guard or go for an arm bar in a self defense situation? All judo practitioners are proficient enough against the layman anyways if it goes to the ground.
