Perhaps Starlink can ask a US judge to freeze Brazilian government assets in equal amount, to include cost of seized hardware + penalties, then "hostage swap". This Brazilian judge won't stop, he's too used to using the leverage of corruption and threats to get what he wants. The people and government of Brazil will need to bring him to heel to to save the situation.

Unlike the Brazil is a sovereign nation, people need to understand that. We Americans are too arrogant.

It’s time for investors to look more into Argentina than Brazil.

Given how Jonh Deere leverages its systems connectivity to abuse its customers, maybe Brazilian farmers can find a silver lining in this whole mess. At least a wake-up call about having their tractor as a live service.
Seeing how space industries are more integrated with global politics and economies is interesting. Fun times ahead. Thank you for the video.

I've read a lot of politically changed commentary on this subject so well done Laura for providing such an objective assessment of the benefits of a space based internet service such as Starlink and the consequences of its denial.

Space traffic management will be fun in the coming years... another way to see this is that depending on other countries' satellite constellation for your food security is a bad idea. Eventually more countries will launch their own internet constellations, just like how Europe and China have their own version of GPS

It’s not like people are choosing Starlink over their country’s provider. They’re choosing the only game in town. Brazil doesn’t have the money or expertise to put up a reliable constellation anyway.

    • @alesh2275
      @alesh2275 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Nothing is stopping Brazil from having its own GPS satellite. Whether it’s economic or the right thing to do just so they could censor their local population is for them to decide.
This is a golden opportunity for Argentina to demonstrate its openness to capitalism, freedom of expression and openness to FDI. John Deere should look more into putting its efforts into connectivity for northern Argentina farmers, instead.

Starlink has the capacity to finally break the censorship of free speech by China’s Great Firewall. Once Starlink’s antennae have become small and mobile enough they WILL be smuggled into China en masse and Chinese will be able to bypass China’s censorship. Just see Ukraine.
Brazil planning on creating a Great Brazilian Firewall in the future will run into the problem of in the future there will be no more Great Chínese Firewall.

I think there's a misunderstanding with this, I agree that the judge is overreaching his powers seizing assets that have nothing to do with one another. However, I don't believe this is threatening the farms. This is just an original manufacturer's overreach who wants to get more money by monitoring and diagnosing and charging customers who have their equipment. Versus having a local repair company do their job in fixing equipment who may be independent of the original manufacturer. The connectivity thing has nothing to do with farming, it's just this is being drummed up more than it really needs to be.

Please tell me if I misunderstood the situation here, but my impression so far is that Brazil had a court order ban X in Brazil and SpaceX said that they will not comply with the order. After that Starlink assets were threatened, as Starlink is wholly owned by SpaceX. Is that not a natural reaction to foreign companies declaring they will not comply with a sovereign country court? Would US act differently, when say RT broadcasting is restricted by US court and a (separate) foreign company, represented in US, said that they don't respect US courts and continue broadcasts?
I have no stake in this dispute, it just feels like a weird dispute they are having.

Thanks for the update on this. Justice Alexandre de Moraes seems to be riding a wave of popularity now in successfully confronting Elon Musk, but if the deal breaks down I wonder how much any efforts to disable the existing Starlink infrastructure in Brazil would be effective once Starlink V2 is significantly deployed and Direct-To-Cell services become available. Then, it might make sense for John Deere to retire bulky Starlink terminals from their offerings and simply use cellular communications with Starllink instead.
Brazil with its sprawling Amazon Forest seems like the perfect place for Starlink Direct-To-Cell services. Once Americans are seen using their T-Mobile cellphones from the middle of the Amazon (or Japanese with KDDI, etc, etc), never getting lost while local Brazilians still do, the Brazilian government will surely see its mistake.

The Brazilian Judge froze the Starlink bank accounts because Elon wouldn't assign a legal representative to address their political concerns with X, and intended to fine X daily until a representative was assigned and decided to use Starlink accounts as a means to get those funds. It was the Judge that decided to mix the two companies assets not Elon, and thereby threaten Brazil's Starlink connectivity. However, behind the scenes some deal was made because Starlink connectivity has been maintained separate from the X issue . Next time maybe better due diligence should be made before shooting blindly in a crowded theatre and then blaming the target for the collateral damage. Or maybe not making their number one concern that the Brazilian people might have a platform to openly state their complaints about the Brazilian government as more important then their citizens having Internet to maintain productivity. Of course that would require Brazil not to be a trying to duplicate Chinas political model, so there's that greater concern as well.

It's not a "spat with a judge" but Musk attacking Brazilian democracy. Sovereign states often place requirements on Internet operators, but Musk decided to get Starlink involved by rogue operations. Unregulated Starlink usage has also empowered illegal extraction of resources from and doing severe damage to the Amazon forest. Internet access is important and it is sad to see Musk use that to attack Brazil just because not liking the current government.

    • @External2737

Quite the opposite. Musk was ordered to commit a felony to benefit one political party.
This had nothing to do with Starlink, but now does. This is on Brazil.

You don't understand the situation. Judge de Moraes ordered X to bar his and President Lula's political opponents in violation of Brazil's constitution and to do it in secret because it would be illegal and bad PR for the judge otherwise. Musk/X refused and closed all X offices in Brazil to keep X employees from being arrested and imprisoned. The judge then went after Starlink, not because it was harmful but because it was partly owned by Musk. The best outcome will be for de Moraes to be impeached by the Senate.
