Black Panther (2018) - Killmonger Takes the Throne

- Notice the transition between the traditional music and the hip hop beat when Killmonger walks towards the throne. The shot starts upside down before rotating to the normal orientation signifying how Wakanda has been turned upside down by this outsider, who bears the weight of both his Wakandan and American heritage. Because of that weight, he was underneath in a psychological sense but as the camera rotates he's now on top, and wants Wakanda to be on top. Magneto would be proud.
Killmonger's theme gave me chills here. It was genius with how they mixed hip-hop and "african" music to project how he's both african-american and wakandan.
and the shot, how its upside-down depicting that that everything in Wakanda is going to flip and be completely opposite
Also notice how the trap overpowers the traditional music showing how his ideologies differ from the wakandans
Marcus On come on now ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽
For REAL. And the best part is it even goes well together, doesn't look forced. But there's just something off about it. Just like Erik claiming the throne: he did it abiding by ritual and he has a good cause driving him but there's just something wrong about it all.

Why the hell do I think of Antonio Brown when I read this?
Fuck that’s pretty cool
Hhhhmmmm... thats pretty cool
Dope quote
"The sun will never set on the Wakandan Empire."
I love that obvious allusion. It gives such an insight to Killmonger's worldview.
dr4c0blade it’s what the British empire used to say back in the 1700’s
Precisely. And you just know Killmonger's refrencing it deliberately.
It's what Kaiser Wilhelm said as well about the German empire.
"I care not the puppet who sits on the throne of the empire of which the sun never sets. The one who controls the money supply controls the British empire. And I control the money supply." -Nathan Mayer Rothschild
dr4c0blade I
He literally quoted the British saying at the end about the sun never setting on their empire. Wow
alansjf33 kinda the point...
Uzuchiha Nasuke I understand. I am just disappointed that I missed that connection when I watched this movie in theaters.
Loki kind of re-quoted Killmonger in Infinity War "The Sun Will Shine on Us Again" #whentheproclaimedbestvillianquotestheotherbestvillian
That's a funny and sad remark because it means for all his supposed modern ideas from an African-American perspective, he's still caving into "if you can't beat them, join, or at least copy them" playbook where he wants to basically turn Wakanda into a planetary military power that more or less subjugates the entire world by military might alone which surely would break international laws (no matter how unenforceable) of all kinds. The other sad thing is that empires have a way of destroying themselves from within via greed at the top and fighting amongst the wealthy elites so it's possible that even if Killmonger did turn Wakanda into an empire he would get so puffed up with arrogance that someone underneath him would mount a coup and try to have him assassinated the moment things weren't going well in other areas of the country or the moment other nations they sent vibranium to decided to turn against them with their own vibranium cannons. That would certainly spark yet another international bloodbath and probably cause Wakanda to break apart. =(
For those who don't get it, its because the empire's territory stretched over so many continents that at any point during the day somewhere in the Empire's borders the sun was up.

I would have liked to see how things would have went if killmonger was running the country of Wakanda up until Thanos arrived
Darren Dyson he'd be dead
I don't know about that y'all remember this movie takes place two years before infinity War and right after Thor Ragnarok the whole world would have been taking over by then and had weapons of vibranium
Well the only reason why Wakanda was in IW was because they decided to take Vision there to see if Shuri could copy his AI so they could remove and destroy the Mind Stone. If Killmonger had won, they wouldn't have gone there at all, T'Challa and Shuri could have been anywhere.
I doubt Wakanda would be in control. Earth would probably be in turmoil, with heroes like the Avengers fighting against Wakanda. Thanos would just stomp everyone.
The Cheat exactly exactly with vibranium weapons on every country
That camera spin is so cold
Faaaaaaaam.....That shit really blew my mind. Like it's a simple move but it was soo impactful to the mood of the scene
Now this is a story all about how Wakanda flipped, turned upside down. And I’d like to take a minute, just before you leave. I’ll tell you how I became a king of an African country.
Ryan R. You had me right up until the last word. Wakanda is a COUNTRY. Hold this L. You tried. Lol
I pulled up to the throne about seven or eight, and I yelled to T'Challa "yo homes smell ya later!" I looked at my kingdom, and marvelled in wonder, to sit on my throne as the King of Wakanda.
As OptimisticPrime1 said, you had it until "city". Wakanda is a Country, and it even rhymes just as well too!! Despite that, this still made me crack up and I applaud you sir!
The Cheat eminem is that you
+OptimisticPrime1 Seriously? Well, crap. Lol, just fixed it. I couldn't really tell if it was a city or country.
That shot of him walking towards the throne is amazing. I love how it was filmed upside down and as he moves closer the camera rotates. And the score just sets the tone. It’s HAUNTING.
Putting that crown on him
Just when I thought trap music can never be an effective use in film... I was wrong

if you like the use of trap, watch the Mandalorian. Moff Gideon's theme is brilliant (that being the trap music). But yeah, I agree, the music made this scene, too.

You can see the contrast between Killmonger and T'Challa in the way they address and treat the Tribal Council. T'Challa treated them as advisors and listened to them, respecting their opinions and advice even when he planned to take a different path. Killmonger, by contrast, treats them as servants who are there to listen and obey. You can tell they all (except for W'Kabi) hate him and think he's unworthy of the throne, but they're too afraid and bound by tradition to go against him.

Truth Hurts His right about Wakanda. In many ways it has done little to nothing to help other Africans. That is it's biggests flaw. That doesn't make Kilmonger right. But he is right in that regard.
@@SabatSch95 you seek help
Huh point because he literally got Implaed?
Killmonger got that Malcom x in him by any means necessary
Leon Brown that was the intention. Can't really say that T'Challa was MLK, but Killmonger's mindset mirrors Malcom X
Leon Brown I don’t think Malcom x was about killing children
There's some Malcolm X definitely in there
Malcom X never actually said they should kill everyone else, just that they should be able to fight back
+agenttheater5 He wasn't talking about the killing part. He was referring to Malcolm X wanting to defend his own race.
For all those who say that Killmonger was right, this scene proves that he's as imperialistic as any colonizer (especially the one he used to work for as a US Navy SEAL).
Looking4luv Can't accept the facts huh?
Hes right AND wrong. Because T’Challa changes as a character and begins enacting the change that Killmonger wanted for the world but by non violent or imperialistic means.

We're booty warriors. We are Tops!
That intro was SO DOPE.
Killmonger is one of the best villains in cinema. He has believable motivations that parallel the hero. He's not just mindlessly evil for the sake of it.
He wants revenge, and violent revolution. Which is a plausible motivation. He's not like the Joker who just wants to watch the world burn. His anger comes from his life experiences.
People said Black Panther didn't deserve an Oscar nomination if The Dark Knight didn't get one. But Killmonger is a villain with far more depth than the Joker
Can't agree more
Nah, this movie's fun at times, but it's a pretty bad movie like 95% of mcu films, man lol
Its presentation of its plot and themes are too silly and the main characters have the personality of cardboard.
It definitely didn't deserve any awards, but social media pushed hard to get it that attention because most people probably thought this was the first black film or something, and were unaware that there've been many works by black artists in several fields that are better than this film by gigantic margins.

Ludwig Göransson did an amazing job with the soundtrack👏🏾🔥
I can almost agree with all his convictions here, aside from the genocide part of course. Only problem is that the oppressed would then become the oppressors, a vicious cycle of oppression and death. We shouldn't become what our oppressors are, we should be better than them.

I Wouldn't mind if Michael B Jordan inherited the Black Panther role 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Yeah, but with Chadwick gone
Aye I feel him shit is about to hit the fan they let a movie like this get made somethings about to happen soon.
The Fallen Someone sees the signs and knows. Infinity War is about population control, look very very close.
In today's world, shit is always about to happen. The media and art reflects the political and social climate of the time, for example, The Winter Soldier was already being made when all those big NSA and surveillance leaks came out, and the movie itself was released before the Citizenfour documentary which really brought the surveillance issue into the mainstream. Civil War came out in an election year, in a very divisive time for the US and touched on issues like international oversight for unilateral military actions. Marvel has always been telling allegorical stories.
Oh yeah these movie aren't just coming out just to come out. People are just too stupid and slow to read the writing on the wall. They've been building up to this since before I was even thought of. The table is set they're just waiting for the right time to strike.
The Fallen you’re an idiot
I believe that there are meteors that are going to be flying down from the sky and hitting a bunch of towers
Even if Killmomger succeeded in his plan, eventually the Avengers would’ve came and stop him.
The Avengers still have to answer to the Sokovia Accords. Even if they were approved by the U.N. to battle Wakanda, there are still major issues. One, more than half of the Avengers is either on the run from the government (Captain America, Black Widow, Falcon, Wanda, etc.) or are not on Earth (Thor, Banner). War Machine, Iron Man, and Vision aren't enough to take on the entire army even if they recruited Spiderman. Two, the Avengers would be forced to take extreme measures like killing innocent Wakandan people which is something the Avengers would most likely not agree to. The only possibility of the Avengers stopping them is if the Sokovia Accords was out of the equation and the whole Avengers team was united again.
thaiazn4lyfe Well none of that occurred in Infinity War so to me that’s irrelevant. The Avengers, regardless, would STILL go and stop him because many innocent people would be getting killed and hurt. Something Captain America would NOT stand for. And I’m pretty sure the government, despite the Sokovia Accords, wouldn’t allow that to keep on happening either.
thaiazn4lyfe All together they would stop Killmonger so don’t try and give me an excuse to why they wouldn’t be able to. Fuck outta here with all that bruh.
That’s when killmonger meats there adversaries n team up 😉
To be honest I don't think he cared. That's the biggest flaw of his character. He's too tied down with hate and bitterness. His entire plan is nothing but destruction. At the end of the day, I think thats all he knows.
Killmonger, in Black Panther, acted out the African proverb, “The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth,”
Killmonger walking to the throne is the best scene i've seen in my entire life
Ludwig nailed it🔥
This guy was planning to kill children, but some days later cried to see a sunset ._.
ugh. what Hitler did wasn't in response to any oppression, please don't compare the two. Also whatever war hero or military you can think of, fought in a war that killed children and someone did the killing. That's what wars do, kill everything. anyways glad to have this conversation.
You think the guy who was trained by the CIA and worked for the US governement to destablise other countries was oppressed? He did the oppressing and he would of been paid handsomely for it too. Using the excuse that he had ancestors enslaved over 150 years ago is a poor one.

This movie sure does have a lot of unforgettable moments.
But I'm starting to wonder, what if T'Challa didn't survive the trial, and Killmonger still ended up as the king at the point of Infinity War?
AlEz TairIo the heroes would be busy fighting them
than all thanos would need to do is walk through all the destruction that Erik caused and take the stone without a fight. in the end all Erik would have done is caused destruction on a world wide scale that would have killed everyone, including wakanda.
I love how it illustrates the African-American heritage, displacement from Africa, and the difference in the two cultures. Kilmonger was no longer accepted by Africa or Africans as one of their own, but he was looked down upon and to the Wakandans, he was considered an American with no culture or quality. Sadly, I've encountered this mindset by all except two africans that I've met in this big city that I live in. AFRICAN AMERICANS HAVE CULTURE AND GROUPS (TRIBES)!!! Languages can be learned, our cultures are different and they can't seem to understand that.... It's sad and pitiful to be honest.
^^^^ This this this this. Shout out to the African Americans, and all the other Black People that were able to build their own culture despite the odds against us.
