You will know how precious of thing when you lost it.
The hurtest part of this scene is that Hikaru couldnt say a farewell to Sai. That thing makes Hikaru and us feel regretful. Even Sai couldn't say last words to him. The ending is really hurt. We are not ready to leave Sai without a word 😭
I was crying like a baby when I watched this part for the first time back in early 2000s. It still makes me tear up.
When I rewatched this and then watched the chinese live action the live action really made this scene so much sadder

When my dad was dying, I came 10 minutes after he had already passed. I still have regrets I didn't stay with him, quit my stupid job and take care of him.
No warning, no goodbyes, nothing, Sai disapears in the midst of a dull normal day and Hikaru barely notices, only for the weight of what just happened to him him, and us, like a truck later when it finally sets in. This kind of character "death" hurts sooo much

I like the scene choices made here. It's like watching Sai go through all five stages of grief for himself.
One of the saddest moments in my experience watching anime. It is that no one else knows of Sai's existence, it's like he didn't even exist in the first place, there is no one to lean on and mourn together. He was gone and without proof that he existed
If you think this is sad, watch till the end. Sai has one more showing in the anime (manga is another story all together), and THAT, the last episode, is to me much more sad.
And, if you think this is sad, better not watch Clannad and especially Clannad After Story...my heart felt like it was breaking on the inside and I couldnt catch a breath. Also, 2 parts in the Angel Beats anime are as sad as the saddest from Clannad AS. I cant take this shit anymore, I always feel like I'm dying. People think Titanic 1997 with Leo is sad. Its like a walk in the park, compared to some anime that feel like a hard core soul grinder.

Since he was a ghost, I never expected him to disappear. Then they kept alluding to his death and I was like “no don’t do this” and then he disappears. I cried so hard. This scene was so sad.

Agreed. The remaining episodes just weren't as interesting without Sai, and frankly, kind of depressing. If they could have at least let Sai and Hikaru have a proper goodbye, I probably wouldn't have minded.

This was really one of the best anime ever, much less the music.
It was about a game I can never get a grasp on. But the anime sucks you in. I also like how the MC grew up and changed cloths. So many anime have kids 40 years later and in the same damn cloth's.
@@rahrah5091 yes, the way the producers payed attention to details like the chirping sounds of cicadas for instance, ... genius!, everything seemed so realistic: the plot, the pacing, the dialogues, ... this story could have taken place in real life (arguably with or without spirit Sai). I can't remember any another anime that came that close to reality or to be more precise that gave me the feeling of being sucked into the world, story and development of a fictional character like the one of Hikaru, but at the same time not being fictional at all, in a sense that the two worlds, the world of Hikaru and our world, are relatable in many regards. For example there was that scene of a scholar who tried his best to pass the exams, but failed in the end and cried. I think we all experienced similar struggles in life, that's why this story is totally relatable. But maybe I'm just saying all this because there are so many episodes and time passes slower when watching this anime compared to other anime.

I'm watching this on my grandmother's birthday, and she could pass any day now. I really hope that I didn't treat her like Hikaru did Sai but part of me thinks I did. Everyone should remember to cherish those around them while you still have them because no one knows how long you will have with them and when that time may end.
Wisdom and enlightenment often come this way, with the recipient not quite realising what he has achieved. Sai is puzzled, but at peace. He can now pursue an even grander destiny than haunting gobans and scaring small children. Farewell, Sai, you finally played your Divine Move.

I read all the manga as a kid but never got to watch the anime version of this, they really did it justice.
Also, Japanese females VA doing boy voice had came a long way... Hikaru sound so girly in this version
The dub voice kind of sounds more like a growing middle schooler. And Brad Swaile does a great job as Sai.
Brad made me cry when she played Sai. I can tear up at the dub and sub they both did a great job.
try watching the c drama version of this. The leaving scene is so heartwrenching

Just saw the dub of this scene for the first time. Hikaru was a complete f***ing jerk to sai!! Sai tried forever to tell him he was gonna disappear soon and hikaru just wouldn’t listen to him. Wtf?! I never finished the sub or manga, but I knew ahead of time that sai was gonna disappear, but I thought it would just be something like hikaru just waking up, finding him gone, and being depressed or something, not hikaru being a complete @$$ to him right up until the very moment he disappears.

Sai's purpose gets fulfilled. passing on his knowledge to Hikaru so he does not comes back. But resides in Hikaru's heart in his Go games. Hikaru does see Sai once more and then realises Sai is alive in his Go game.

The divine move is hard as fuck man. For example tic tac toe, the divine move has been solved. You can either make the opponent draw or you can defeat them with the same tactic using corners no matter where they put their mark. Now try doing that in Chess or Go. I wanted to see it sooo fucking bad too until I realized how hard it is lol
