How to change the spark plugs in your Harley Davidson M8 Softail - featuring my FXLRS

- GO GO GADGET SPARK PLUG CHANGE! Pretty simple, I'm not sure what else to say about it. The links are all down below and lots of guys recommend putting some anti-seize around the spark plug threads too. You can use stock, you can use yellin' chicken, you can use NGK, you can use Drag........a spark is a spark.....I don't believe too much in to "performance" spark plugs. Different plugs may last longer but I don't think any power change can be had. You should put more thought and preparation in to properly gapping your plugs!

It is a Japanese getting on a FXLRS. I was able to know the procedure of the spark plug exchange thanks to you! Thank you for a good video!
Glad I can help ! Ride safe 🤙🏼
Note/Info. & general FYI: From what I've heard...timing [and spark advance/spark retard] on Harleys and how it relates to Spark Plugs and Spark Plug Wires...Harleys use what's called Ion Sensing, as opposed to something like a crank trigger. It is super important that the Resistance [spark plugs & spark plug wires] read by the Harley Sensor [which uses the Resistance of OE HD Spark Plugs & Spark Plug Wires] is within the range of the OE plugs & wires. The SE plug wires and spark plugs are ok to use, but no power increase that I'm aware of [yep, the SE plug wires do look nice & are ok to use]. Be careful when using aftermarket [non Harley Davidson or Screamin' Eagle] spark plugs and/or spark plug wires. Just putting this out there from what I've seen on several videos here on You Tube. Appreciate the input man. I’ve heard no issues with the ngk’s. They’re marketed as a direct replacement too. Bikes been running great for me for several weeks with these now
You should use antiseize before installing spark plugs..
I’m pretty sure I either stated that right before I installed them or I at least put it in subtitles. No?
@@RidinDad I didn't enable subtitles :) if you mean on screen warnings, it wasn't there. Also in video, it seems you don't use any product.
Yeah the on screen stuff. I did subtitles before TH-cam does them so it would show up no matter what. But I just re watched it to see and you’re right!! I never spoke on it. I did include it in the description of the video. In in the original part where it shows me putting them back in I did forget to put the anti-seize on them at that point and I did take a second video but I guess I forgot to edit the correct one in at the time of editing. I always make sure I put anti-seize on these and exhaust studs and such. It does at least say it in the description lol. Good catch!!
@@ihateemaeland you have stuck spark plugs :D
@@ihateemael change plugs every 18 months? 😂 even service manual says 48000 or 2 years. Nobody changes them in 2 years. Btw I am not yankee, I am from Turkey :) its like exhaust flange bolts. I recommend you to read service manual before making something up from your mind.
Have you ever considered purchasing the magnum shielding electric blue metallic ignition wire set? I pulled the trigger on the copper canyon color today. I’m gonna see how they are before getting their clutch and brake cables. Good video as always !
Thanks! And no I haven’t. Every single color wire I’ve ever seen does not match my blue perfectly and I feel like it would throw off the rest of the bike especially since now I have paint on the tank and the center - in that blue also
Great video! Book marking for when I need to do this over the summer, what size spark plug socket is needed? Thanks!!
Same as car if I recall. Honestly been a while. Dont know the size off hand but go to any auto parts store and say you need a spark plug socket. You should get the right part. It’s magnetic too
And thanks man! 👊🏻
I'll be curious to see what you think of them, anytime I use more expensive plugs on a bike they kinda suck and the bike doesn't run as well, but then I throw the basic b!tch ones in and it runs great!
Haha tis is life man. Ive been riding it with these plugs for about 250 miles so far and the bike runs perfect. Made an air cleaner change too and bike it running better than ever now so I think I found the winning combination
Thats probably because people don’t gap them. Not only that but when gapping iridium plugs you need a tool and feeler gauges at best. If you stick those $1 feeler craps they sell at vatozone…. You’ll most likely damage the iridium tip
Is that right? Damn I honestly had not heard that before. That’s what I used for these!
@@RidinDad no man. That can damage the iridium tip. Those things are delicate as hell. I use feeler gauges like the ones used for valve lash. And a special tool that squeezes down the tip if it needs to be closed
Good to know. I have feeler gauges I use for valve clearance. I’ll use them in the future for sure
Great video, my street glide is due.
If plugs aren’t gapped correctly, will that gap gage tool do that or will i need to return them ? Thanks. First time doing plugs.
You just bend the tip in or out depending on what you need. Gap gauge shows what you need. Dont return the. M
When I tried iridium plugs on my FXRS Evo, the mpg dropped about ten percent.
I’ve never heard of that happening. Are you sure they were the same style and gapped correctly
lucky on street bob didn’t need to remove tank since has smaller tank 😊
There ya go!
No high temp anti seize on the plug threads? :(
I forgot to film on camera. I did talk about it at the end I believe. But yes they do have it
Great video! Just curios though. Did you follow torque spec or just got them snug?
Thanks man. And I never do tq specs unless I’m doing like a full engine thing.
@Ridin Dad Roger that! Hope all is well brotha!
Appreciate it. Thanks man!
Thinking of installing better plugs and wires after installing cams and larger throttle body. Any thoughts?
It won’t hurt anything but it’ll waste your money. Not needed at all. You can upgrade to the ngk plugs for the quality. But nothing fancy is needed
Put that money towards a custom tune or something. Plugs and wires are a waste
@@drwombat has custom tune.
You should be able to just lift the gas tank to get to the right side plugs without having to take the tank off.
Angle is not enough space
Great video! Thank you 😊
Appreciate it. Thanks!
When are you supposed to change out the spark ⚡️ plugs ?
I am nowhere near my bike manual and I honestly don’t recall. But it should be at a regular intervals according to your manual for sure. If for whatever reason you do not have your manual for the bike you were asking about I’m sure you could Google it and either find the manual for free or for a few dollars or the answer to your question
every 2 years or 30 k miles
What size socket are those for the 2018+ fxlrs
Same as typical. Just ask your auto parts store for a spark plug socket. They’re specific sockets with magnets in them
that rear cylinder is a pain in the butt, is there a trick to getting that off
The spark plug is stuck in the rear cylinder?
@@RidinDad the wire was just making me nervous yanking on it...its all good now
Gotchya@@phillipmarable3736
Anti seize?
Yes
Plug gaps?
They come pre gapped but check to make sure they’re gapped correctly before installation anyway.
Dumb question, when you pull the tank do you have to drain it. Or does the quick connect hold the fuel back?
Nope you don’t have to drain it at all. You can disconnect the electrical part and cycle the start for the bike and it’ll help drain residual fuel out but you don’t even have to do that
@@RidinDad awesome! Thanks for the reply man! Going to be doing my annual service relatively soon before I put it away for winter and haven’t replaced plugs on mine yet.
Nice! No problem man, happy to help 👊🏻
@@RidinDad so I finally got around to doing my plugs and service. Just me being me I experimented before I went ahead and pulled the tank. So if you want to skip a step you can get this all done without pulling the tank if you use a wobble extension to get the plugs in and out. Only pain in the ass part was pulling the cables 😉
Yeah it’s so easy to pop the tank off I’m not willing to deal with that lol. It takes an extra 30 seconds if that to remove it all the way. Wayyyyyy easier
Do not use anti-seize on the plugs, its not needed. The plugs have a factory coating on them to keep them from seizing.
Anti seize is highly recommended and cannot hurt anything if applied correctly and sparingly. It’s always a good idea
No torque, no never sees.
What??
You mean anti seize? And no torque meaning don’t tighten them down??
@@RidinDad no torque wrench.
Never used one….
