The use of a thread mug (and I had two mugs hanging in my peg boards) has been almost life changing. I have been throwing my threads on the floor for forty years. You’re never too old to learn 😂😂😂🙏
Haha it’s funny how simple these things can be you just need someone else to say them sometimes don’t you. That’s how I felt about all these things 😂 x
That is a great idea for marking darts! I think that would help my students who aren't yet comfortable just sewing directly from the snips at the top of the dart to the point.
Thank you for the hacks.I always love to watch/listen to them as I find there are always one or two new ones. I do use magnetic dishes especially to pick up spilled pins. the other one I love is the pipe cleaner and the drinking straw.
That's so wise to only use white or black thread! That will save so much money and hassle trying to determine which thread matches the fabric when buying online! I do that for serger thread, but now I will do the same for normal! I use a thin paintbrush to clean my machines as well as a large makeup powder brush and they work super well also. And that seam allowance hack is so cool. Thanks for sharing!!!
Thanks so much for watching :). I think the thread thing will depend on how fussy you feel about colour matching, I do the same with my overlocker too it saves trying to buy all the colours x
Thanks for the hacks Sally. I do use some of them but will try the others especially as my sewing table, ironing board and floor is covered in threads so I will adopt your idea of a mug or bowl for these. Brilliant!
I have a hack for cleaning the machines, I use a double ended eye shadow brush, cheap one from Primark I think I got it from. I rub it through my hair which makes it static and the fluff and fabric debris just clings to it. Also if I have a fabric that is at risk of catching in the feed dogs, I use strips of tissue to start off just an inch or so. And then it just tears away. Totally agree on the magnetic dishes. Great vlog, thank you for sharing.
That's such a great tip about the eyeshadow brush and tissue thank you for sharing! Magnetic dishes are great aren't they, I can't believe it took me so long to get one! Thank you for watching xx
Great tips. The pipe cleaner is something new so I will definitely give that a try. My husband bought me a magnetic pin bowl when I first started sewing and it pretty much lives on my sewing machine when not in use.
While watching another sewing channel your channel popped up and I am very glad that it did . Love the dart tip . I also make quilts and tie two pencils together gives a perfect quarter inch seam allowance . Very useful tips . Thanks . Your new subscriber .
I totally agree with your practice of using just a few colors of thread for seams. But I add one more. I sew the majority of my seams with white, black or grey. And if I'm perfectly honest, the grey is the best choice about 75 % of the time.
Super ideas! I totally agree about the magnetic pin dish - once you've tried one, you'll never want to be without it. I don't use hair straighteners but I have a mini iron which gets into most fiddly little areas. I have a felted/woollen ironing pad which means that for little bits of pressing, like pressing seams open as I am sewing up a garment, I don't need to traipse out to the proper ironing board. The tip about sewing your seams in either black or white is intriguing - I don't do that, but I do use up random thread colours left on my bobbins from previous projects for things like basting, gathering, and overcasting (I don't have an overlocker). I do tend to use similar colours even if not a perfect match... Finally, as I am lucky enough to have a second sewing machine that is the same make as my main one, I keep my walking foot on one machine more or less permanently (as it's a pain to take it on and off!) and use the other feet (zipper, overcasting, gathering etc.) on the other machine, swapping between the two machines as I make up the garment. Thanks for sharing your hacks, I hope mine may also provide food for thought.
Thanks so much for sharing your tips I keep thinking about getting a mini iron but I haven’t invested yet. I do the same with my left over threads and sometimes gathering threads that I pull out they are handy for sewing buttons on etc aren’t they. Thank you so much for watching 😊 x
The dart hack is great. Will definitely be doing that next time I'm marking my darts. I have used a magnetic dish for some time now, and find it particularly useful for when I am hand sewing and have dropped my needle. Finds it in no time :) I also use an old clean make up brush for cleaning my machines, as they are so soft.
Great tips so thank you for that. I particularly like the one for marking darts and the double pencils for seam allowances. I love the toaster sweater on you - definitely worth sorting out the cuffs! Diana

Thank you for watching! Yes someone else recommended the make up brushes that also sounds like a great idea. I think I might need to add grey to my thread collection too haha! X
Great video Sally love all the hacks especially the dart one. Talking about seam allowance I bought some lovely vintage linen from a thrift shop a few weeks ago and made the most beautiful blouse I was so proud of it then I realised I should have added seam allowance it’s about two sizes to small so it just hangs in the wardrobe and I keep having a look at it and giving it a little stroke.😂
Oh no!! Well I did something similar with my first Fibre Mood pattern, luckily it just about fit but it wasn't the most comfortable haha. Glad you found the dart hack useful :) x
Change the cuffs and get some wear out of it, since it looks elegant when you can’t see the sleeves. Thanks for the tips- love the dart one, makes sense!
Thank you very useful tips. I do think you should fix cuffs. I have made 4 of the toasters and love them. I always make the neck band and cuffs smaller if fabric is drapy
Thank you, yes I think I will do, the arms are very long anyway so I think I'll just be able to cut off and replace. I know lots of people love this pattern :). Thanks for watching xx
Love the dart hack 💖 I use magnetic pin dishes too, one by machine for pins removed whilst sewing and one on cutting table, and I also have an extendable telescopic magnetic stick thing which is great for waving over floors to find dropped pins & needles. I use small paint brushes for cleaning in my sewing machine and overlocker.
OOh I like the idea of an extendable magnetic thing, that sounds just what I need rather than going over on my hands and knees haha. Great tip about the paint brushes too, thanks for sharing and watching x
Great hacks thank you. Will be trying out several of those, especially the dart hack and black and white seam thread too! They were especially light bulb moments for me 💡🤭
Thanks for sharing those hacks! About adding seam allowances, I’m so used to it since I use a lot of patterns from Ottobre sewing magazine and also Burda magazine plus that I often copy r t w, so I just wing it and cut 1 cm or sometimes 1,5 cm without measuring. Give it a try! Hems I always measure though. My latest favourite hack is to use a glue pen, so useful when it’s tricky to pin. Another hack that makes it easier to put in elastics to a waistband is to leave an opening in the seam that join the waistband to a ring. Especially good when it’s a wide elastic and it really helps to avoid the elastic to twist.
I do usually wing things like that to be honest too but for some reason I really find adding seam allowance annoying so I usually avoid patterns without it but I do like the look of fibre moody and burda patterns. Great tip about the elastic thank you I do find it fiddly to do sometimes 😊 Thank you for watching xx
The pipe cleaner hack for cleaning is brilliant! I’m going to trade in my q-tips swabbed in isopropyl alcohol for that. I also use tiny, dense makeup brushes meant for eye makeup.
I think you showed the toaster sweater before… the cuffs have been sewn the wrong way take the off resew the seam the right way and reattach them, it’s worth the effort, its a good make and looks lovely fabric.
Yes I did when I filmed my sew-along. I was wondering if I could just live with the cuffs being wrong but I think I'll feel better changing them :). Thanks so much for watching x
hello very beautiful video 😃 I subscribed to your channel, please kindly film one hack the sewing machine electric foot pedal doesn't want to stay in place it slips slides around while trying to sew how do you make it stay in place while sewing? and your sewing machine has a start stop button which lights up green and red please kindly film how to unplug the sewing machine electric foot pedal and operate the sewing machine using only the start stop button being used to sew please OK?please kindly let me know OK?thank you very much and have a beautiful day

Hair straightener for pressing, genius. Also i love the mug or bowl idea for cut threads. Never thought of it.
Haha it's a funny one isn't it x
Great hacks Sally, thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for watching 😊 xx
I love the color of the top on you! It’s worth changing it.
Thank you I think I’ll definitely try and sort out those cuffs 😂 x

Thanks for reminding me of the hair straightener button placket ironing hack!
I'd not heard of it before - mind blown haha xx
@@SecretLifeOfASeamstress I totally forgot about it, maybe because I am trying to embrace my curls and waves 😂
Thanks for the hacks Sally. I do use some of them but will try the others especially as my sewing table, ironing board and floor is covered in threads so I will adopt your idea of a mug or bowl for these. Brilliant!

Wow the darts hack is a game changer! Can’t believe I never thought of that, I hate marking darts. Thanks 😊
It really is isn’t it! I can’t remember where I heard it but I’ve since used it for buttonholes too. Glad it helped thank you for watching 😊 x

Hi, I think you should change the cuffs as its a lovely sweater. Thank you for the list of hacks and tips. 😊💐

Always interesting to hear about something that makes sew easier
I have heard that makeup brushes that come in sets from the dollar store are good for cleaning your machines of lint
I know a lady who does alot of custom sewing and alterations for people
She has 4 colors of basic thread
Black white grey and beige
Thats it
she swears grey blends with alot of colors
Of course she does have assorted for matching top stitching as well
I recently made a top and wasn't happy with the patterns cuffs I had to change them it did bother me
So I think that they look fine but like me I think that you will be happier changing them
Looking forward to seeing more videos
Take care
Happy sewing
Thank you for watching! Yes someone else recommended the make up brushes that also sounds like a great idea. I think I might need to add grey to my thread collection too haha! X
The colour of the toaster sweater is gorgeous on you, defenetly change the sleeve to normal one, its actually slightly longer then usual.
Thank you so much I’ll have to change the cuffs I think as the fabric is lovely 😊 x

I bought one of those hand hel vacuum cleaners for sucking up the threads.
That's a good idea, I could do with one of those for my overlocker! x

And I am always using my flat iron whenever I am too lazy to set up my iron. I use it a lot for hems :)
It’s great that one isn’t it! It’s a faff getting the ‘big’ ironing board out sometimes isn’t it! Thanks for watching 😊 x

I use a clean Greek yoghurt pot for threads, scraps etc
Maybe I should upgrade 🤣
Haha whatever works is fine I’m sure! It’s funny what we get used to using isn’t it 😂 x
I think the toaster is just the wrong fabric but it’s a shame because the fabric is lovely and the pattern is lovely. Change the cuffs definitely
Yes I think I have to admit I’ve completely mis matched the pattern and fabric this time haven’t I 🙈 I will definitely change the cuffs I think x
The dart hack is so simple and easy
Why has nobody shared this before? 😱🤣
Haha I know it’s amazing isn’t it! I’ll never go back to fiddling around marking through patterns again 😂 x
The hairspray hack i will try with my caveman hands so ta mate.

I’ve got a non slip mat that I put under my sewing machine pedal that keeps it from wandering around!
