I decided to suffer and translated all the binary dialogue since I was curious what the villagers were saying, so here they are with the timestamps;

I was so disappointed in that movie. It's more interesting when things that aren't supposed to exist turn out to actually do but instead the "twists" were things like selfishness / power trip and greed.

Fun fact: the white room Chi was in was a form of psychological torture where the victim is deprived of of their identity and their senses are numbed, and is unable to recognize people they know. Not sure why her father did that when the results benefit the virus

Not gonna lie, the mc being the oblivious child of a cult leader is actually kind of interesting.
yeah, i was expecting the whole story to be about a cult that formed because of the virus. it was said this village the only surviving one in the whole world, meaning that their rules are very effective as to not let them succumb to the disease. i expected some type of eldritch horror awaiting in the forest, the reason why they aren't allowed to go there. and, the gates were made by the villagers to keep something (a monster or the source of illness) out of their town. it's interesting if that were to happen, though I think it's really obvious and cliche?
though I'm quite satisfied with the storyline here. i think this needs more context and info to make everything fall into place. gotta wait for a Part Two!

I first heard about Unit 731 in a manga I was way too young to be reading (was 12 or 13) about a killer buddhist monk the manga ended after the story arc that involved a giant amalgam ghost of lots of undiscovered victims of the experiments whose bones were dug up from a pit grave during construction though the novel continued on to more ghosts put to rest by the murderous monk. The end of the volume notes talked about the unit doing live-vivisections and deliberately infecting people with shigella bacterium which is a common cause of dysentery

It seems like no one else has talked about the white room yet, so I'll talk about it. It's interesting that once she arrives here is when the voice purposefully leaves, and I'm not sure if the dev noticed or not but this was such a great way to showcase her descend to insanity. The white room wouldn't only gain sensory deprivation but the neglect the only person Chi could have was a thoughtful touch to enhance a child's torture. The white room is the exact opposite of a child too, it's just one, plain single color with such mundane things to be in there, in which a child has to stay in for even just a week, it'll be such torture, as a child doesn't have the normal patience an adult would have, and adding the false hope the voice gave her added to it. Adding the desperation was a nice touch.
This commentary also felt weird to type, since I'm talking about a child's torture. Thank you, game, that you made me appreciate how you tortured a fictional child.

SPOILERS!! Just to answer some stuff:
1) YES I plan on making more games!! A lot more games. It just will take time since it’s just me working on them.
2) There is only one ending. If you say no, you'll be forced to go into the woods anyway.
3) Manly missed some things!! The text in Chi’s house is mostly different afterwards, there’s some random events, some secret areas, and her father is out behind her house in the marker world since her perfect world won’t be complete without her papa, but she doesn’t totally forgive him.
4) Lastly, my sister is gonna do a let’s play of Chi that I plan on uploading. I’m just editing it now!! So, some of these things will be solved when she plays, if you wanna watch.

Anyhow!! Another quick couple of answers!
1) The binary DOES translate into things! People have kindly translated it in the comments.
2) The face that appears at around 6:50 is a randomly occurring event, with 1/200 chance of happening. It's supposed to be a hint towards this town being "wrong," as in it's not real. The idea is that the the village "glitched" for a moment. There's a couple of other instances of the village "glitching."

definitely a love letter to higurashi, it feels more than just "a copy", it has soul put into it, i'm a pretty big fan of the visual novels so I can definitely see a lot of parallels, wich were probably intentional, but I feel like it does enough for it to have it's own charm.

I was gonna say something like "The illust work and portraits are not their strong suit." But ya know what, It adds to the unsettling nature of things.
Looking at their art, it's weird how great, yet conventionally bad, it is. Like, it shares so many traits with that style everyone gets when they are just starting and try to draw "anime" especially in the anatomy, my god the anatomy is off. BUT IT'S STILL REALLY GOOD. Particularly their skill at coloring and composition I think.
It's like they started where almost everyone else starts, and instead of turning a different direction like everyone, they said "No, THIS is my style" and good on them, they really made it work.
It's like they combined anime with a porcelain doll and a Bratz doll.
i really love unique styles for that same reason, too!

You know, I expected dark but this just kept on going. That got so much worse than I was expecting. The opening had this strange feel to it, but I still wasn't prepared for the sheer misery Chi would go through. The last third of the game is more or less setting up a sequel if not a series outright, and I am curious what's really going on here.

Fun fact: The trigger for the face transition early in the video... when you hit the trigger to enter the room where Manly saw it you notice the change. If you're going to do this make the character face up or AFTER transitions.
It makes it less obvious and in turn more shocking when you see it.
To be fair though we have all likely made that mistake as we were learning this kind of thing.

I kinda like it the way as is. Because it's like a "wait, WTF was that?!" moment. Then it hits a second time because _it sticks._
What would be even cooler (but probably way harder to pull off) is if it did both: changing the face before or after the room transition at random. Or maybe sometimes screwing with just the menu, like changing the portrait to be facing forward instead of that 3/4 view.

I think this game could've used a few more editing passes through. It had a lot of really good moments, but so much of the dialogue just felt painfully cheesy. Some of it in a nostalgic way, some of it in a way that really detracted from the experience. *Especially* the documents at the end, they just didn't read like real official documents.
I can accept the ending documents not looking official because it may have been too obtuse if they were realistic, there was some suspension of realism so it could serve the plot in the most readable way. I do agree with you though on questionable dialogue, the moments that got me were when the virus was explaining to Chi how it came to be and when the grandma was talking about the cat in the box. maybe the long-windedness could be a character's distinct voice, but it comes across as unintentional when more than one character has the same problem. it could either be cut down to be less "boring'" or , for example, the cutscene could have a few intersplicing cuts to the daughters and to the road ahead to make the whole scene feel less monotonous while the grandma is going on her speech. lol
Idk, to me the torture sections felt more like torture porn than anything. The shock value of the horror hinging almost solely on the blatant torture of a 6 yr old girl is less scary and more infuriating/depressing. The overly aggressive demon talking to her makes it even less engaging emotionally as there's nothing to do but sit through torture after torture while waiting out the clock. There's no proper build up and the quick time events make the scenes less impactful as you're more focused on hitting the right buttons. Sometimes less is more, and I think the torture scenes could've benefited from showing less but using sounds and narrative to build up tension.

@@hades8070 plus, it literally used a real tragedy as a plot point, and for no real reason either. They literally could’ve made something up, but they just HAD to use Unit 731.
And we wrap on a valuable lesson we should all know: DO NOT PLAY IN OLD SHEDS. Best case scenario, you step on a rusty nail and have an annoyed nurse scrape/mangle your foot. Worst case, you lose your eyes and probably have your soul crammed into a paper doll in another dimension.
Seriously though, I'd really like to see more of this. So many questions and I really enjoyed the subversion of everything I expected.

I was half expecting the village to be a mix between a cult and a human blood farm, that could have provided enough horror of its own; the bits where everyone was going "everything is yours anyway Chi! Take everything I have! Kill my family and eat my last bread crumbs, we live to serve!" and Chi was just like "nah but gimme markers" was REALLY unsettling in how banal all the little interactions were
I kinda dig the premise I thought up, but I also like what the game turned out to be. It's unique, if a bit over the top at times (the expressions remind me of higurashi lol), and the dialogue sometimes sounds stilted (when the grandma started talking about the cat in the box I found it truly hilarious how she started dropping jargon randomly, but that's just my weird sense of humor)
I really like the stretched faces, and the janky walking animation (one leg stays still, the other flexes), it's uncanny
The shop keep got a shipment of markers from outside, yet everyone outside the village is dead? Yknow, I think maybe not everyone outside the village is dead. Just a theory, though.

This seems to had been a pretty well put together game. the end was disappointing, especially with how Chi was basically being taught to just kill everyone. i knew something was wrong when there seemingly wasn't any locations to acquire food, not even a riven that could theoretically have fish.
I thought the dog would be the evil thing.. like if you didn’t feed it blood it would turn slowly into something of a monster, or if you did it would turn into a monster while drinking the blood and then turn back to normal LOL.
That was my first thought on the title.
And also the thumbnail.

As an aside, the siblings names are also similar. They can mean different things depending on the kanji used, but "Akane" is probably 茜 (crimson, ruby (colour), deep red, etc.).
Kohaku as a name is most often written as 琥珀 , which means "amber," however it can also be written 紅白 , meaning "red and white." Fun fact, this is the same "kohaku" used for koi of the kohaku variety, which is white with red splashes

This was a really interesting game, it went in a direction I really didn't expect. I agree that it would've been interesting to have more padding in the beginning and end, especially the end as I really liked the new characters that were introduced, but I didn't really feel we got enough of their backstory. Overall I really liked it, it was a fun, intriguing game and I felt like it was inspired by other stories but still brought something very fun and unique to the table.

chi really spent weeks in a dungeon as her own father tortured her mentally and physically to the extent of her going insane and murdering her entire village and replacing it with a more ideal one then once two random people just casually stroll in and say "hi im gonna capture you again but this time we'll love you" and she just immediately trusts them unconditionally

By the thumbnail and title, I assumed you'd have to feed your dog blood otherwise something bad happens (maybe turns into a beast/demon and kills everyone). Turns out the demon was in someone else...
while I haven't translated it fully, the red screen at 39:06 is talking about Unit 731. Unit 731 was a japanese testing facility during WW2. they test and produced biological weapons (like if you put the plague into a bomb, simplest example) and brutally tested on prisoners. prisoners consisted of captured soldiers and homeless people on the streets (if i'm correct). i haven't watched through the entire video yet but I wonder if that has to do with anything?
edit, just finished video: oh. *that's why it was mentioned.* anywho, it's possible that the red screen are the documents in the credits but in binary form. i'll continue to translate and see if anything else pops up.
