Santiago do Cacém | Portugal

Santiago de Cacém is an Alentejo municipality in the district of Setúbal, located between the municipality of Sines to the west and the district of Beja to the east. The first human occupation will have occurred in the century. 9 BC... as an Iron Age Celtic settlement.... in the place where later during Romanization no. century 1, an urban agglomeration would emerge developed around a sanctuary, a sacred pilgrimage site associated with medicinal hot springs. These are the current Roman ruins of. Miróbriga. From the sec. VI the population leaves this place and moves to the hill of the current castle.
After the Arab conquest of the 19th century VIII, this village is known as Vila do Mouro Kassem. There are five centuries of Arab occupation. In 1156 this land was reconquered by D.AFONSO Henriques and in 1186 it was donated to the Order of Santiago, hence the current name of the town.
The Mother Church integrated into the castle wall was founded in the 19th century. XIII by the Order of Santiago and has undergone several reconstructions over the years.
Inside, we see 3 naves separated by Gothic arches based on octagonal pillars with cubic capitals;
in the century In the 19th century the church plant was inverted, with the entrance being made through the old chancel. This former chancel was rebuilt in the 19th century. 16th century, having received a lowered vaulted structure with ribbed and stellate ribs.
We leave the castle and main church!!... and go down the east slope to get lost in the alleys and feel the character of this village.

Once more you show us the beauty of Portugal. I have never been south of a line between approx Mourao - Caiscas, but I do like to see these wonderful white Alentejo towns and villages.
