I would definitely try my hardest to get one of the 14's. The black stripe is a real black stripe because it has the cab mountes for the upcoming 86 series tractors. You'll love the sound of the engine, and when it comes to the horsepower, they're animals.
They are beautiful, for sure! I'm still in the camp of a 1066 or 1206. They are just my favorites. I will likely never own one, but I always circle back to wanting one or the other.
Ran two different 966 back in the 70's. One was brand new and was the big tractor on the farm. The other was a couple of years old when I worked with it. Again the big tractor on the farm. Both did it all. Did it well.
@@FarmallFanatic Like I said it did it all. Plowing and disking. Mowing and chopping. Spreading manure. The last farm I would chop two load of corn and pull the wagons back in tandem. Down a long hill and up a steeper one to the farm. Never a problem with power. I also ran a 1068 and another farm and the tractor was a real dog. It was also well used.
I worked on my uncle's farm in the 70's we had a 966 hydro that was the big tractor on the farm. Used it for everything except plowing, he had an 806 for those tough pulling jobs, I guess to save the hydrostat from extreme jobs like plowing. It was the go to tractor for all other jobs until he got a 1066 gear tractor. All of the red power worked awesome all the time!
Both of those 14's are sweet! But honestly I think the gear drive 966 will be the best bang for the buck when the dust settles. Also I like the wide front 400.
Thanks for the pictures, it made it easier to match the website 😁😁😁 where I found the 1466 hasn't been updated lately though the bid iwas still at $7600. I did find one that sold at an auction in Lancaster last year and it went $32,500,definitely not out of the question.
Cool to see what you're looking for. It doesn't sound to me like you should go for less than a 1066, but, if the right deal pops up on a 9 I certainly wouldn't blame you for pulling the trigger. Happy hunting!
I used to use a 186 Hydro for running a compost turner which requires a slower ground speed. But you are right. It was good for haying, not hard pulling. Besides if anything failed in the transmission, you'd have to ask yourself how much money could you afford to dump into it and if the parts are available.
Had a 966 for 16 years. Now have a 1066. 966 stock has a D414 engine, 12 inch clutch, 18.4-34 tires, and cat 2 three point hitch. A stock 1066 has a DT414 engine, 14 inch clutch, 18.4-38 tires, and a cat 3 three point hitch. From experience the bigger clutch in my 1066 was a lot more reliable. Put a new clutch in my 966 every three years and had four years on last clutch when I traded for 1066. You can put a 15 inch clutch in a 966 by installing a 14 inch flywheel.
The 1456 is definitely more rare. The 1466 is a genuine black stripe as the serial plate is on the rear housing on the right side like and 86. Even if you miss these tractors your son is more important. Lots of nice tractors. The 400 would be good with your 311 plow. The 300 is just not a modernized H. The difference between the 300 and the H is the same difference between the M and Super MTA. The 966 should be worth $20000 at least.
Did the 9 really have a turbo, or just the decal? Wonder what kind of turbo. Ran a 9 with a M&W turbo and a straight pipe. Pulled a 4 bottom in heavy sod. Good times!! Best of luck to your son. Thank you guys for your service.
If you go for the gear drive 966, it would be a good idea to try and see if its an M&W turbo on it or one off a 1066, getting hard to get M&W chargers rebuilt.
Just attended online auction yesterday they had a very rare John Deere 420 S it had a 5-speed transmission and what made it really rare it had hydraulics never knew they made a tractor that small with hydraulics
The black stripe looked good. Reinforced hitch. Reasonable hours. Nice seat. Single pto? I'm not keen on chrome stacks. Plenty of suitcase weights. Split rear wheel weights? Will you need a bigger plough to go with it? I expect $35,000. Good luck. 😮
Well those are some nice looking tractors! Uh just my two cents worth bigger is always better. You might not need all that but there will be a day when you say aww crap I sure wish I had alittle more power! Once that throttle is thrown wide open that's all there is there is no more (but) you can always pull that throttle back and hold her down abit. Good luck with your search but just remember don't jump on the first log that floats by cause maybe alittle bit down the stream a much bigger nicer log will come by!
I know you've got to be over in Ohio(I think). I think you're right about the price range on those tractors except the SMTA. The 1466 will go for $30k +, The 1456 $25k about. The first 966 around $20k maybe. The second one around $18k. The 560 $7 to 8k. The SMTA if it were over in this part of Ohio, $9k or maybe even more. They do like them over here.
The international 966 is a nice tractor but Massey Ferguson and Ford and Oliver and Minneapolis Moline are my top 4. But the old best running tractor the old-timer Farmer’s that I know they all say JI case and the 830 are very popular.
Well, if you were trying to purposely hide any details of the auction so a viewer could go online and see for themselves you did an outstanding job. Way to keep everything a secret and hush hush. Wouldn’t want someone going online to bid against you would you.

Serial number is only true way to determine if it's a true black stripe
@@tbishop6726 true, but if the tractor has the cab mountes in the casting on the rear axle housing, it will always be a mid to later 76.

Theres a 766 for sale for $2500 out here in Washington, but the guy says it needs injector pump work and a front Grill from the pictures I saw.
If that's all..it would be worth buying

Correct
