Well hell if people were giving me money for working on my own property and 90% of the materials used were given for the constant ads they do every video then you or I could too. In the real world though ppl have to work a job, they don't get stuff given to them and get paid to work on your own home

Im 18 and trying to start out my life with little debt so im never a slave to a job. I bought a couple acres in my hometown on my 18th birthday through an owner finance deal and thatll be paid off by the time im 20, im gonna build an offgrid cabin and maybe get some farm animals, i plan on recording it all for my youtube channel starting in may.
As a 32 year old I admire and look up to both of you. This video makes a ton of great points and I completely agree with them. Also love seeing how much Red Poppy Ranch has achieved on his own will to do well for himself and his family.
This hits home hard! The push is on for us to leave Phoenix and get up to the pan handle in Idaho! It's a fear and self doubt that has held us back. But it's time to find away to break free from these city and financial chains. Your comment on walking in a house you resent and are a slave to truley makes sense to me. I inspect homes for many first time home buyers who should not be buying homes.Most are 3to 5 percent down payments.They expect everything to be perfect forever when they are buying.The mortgage guys are back in businesses for sure I see it every day.
It sucks. They totaly ripoff these young folks. Realtors and lenders are dishonest. Whats the point in a sale inspector if it does not force improvements and update or lower the cost? Pointless.
@@2Jeezuzisreal I do my best to educate the buyer on what they are buying and identify potential issues.It is up to the buyer to Force per say the seller to do any needed repairs.Most selllers will only due current needed items to sell for example safety items.The point of an inspection is to identify major issues and major due maintance costs for example roof and boiler life.The buyer can talk to selller about price reduction using the inspection as ammo per say.

Public education is shamefully inadequate & consumes too much of a child’s time. My grandson at 6 knows the names of tools & learning to use them. No TV, plenty of books!
The trouble is, you fellows are from a generation that had fathers. Fathers that taught their sons, you can do it...If your are willing to make mistakes and can learn from those mistakes. A huge percentage of men coming up today have never had a father. And they have lived in a culture that said, "Men are incompetent, stupid, and downright evil." Today's young men have been psychologically kneecapped. I am not a natural builder. But, have built a lot of things (successfully) because my father taught me to NOT be afraid of mistakes and the resultant learning. My father used to say, "If you are afraid of failing, then you will never be successful in anything." And, "Success is the result of failure." You two are increasingly rare in today's man hating culture. Thanks for sticking yourselves out there. By the way, stitches are a sign of somebody out there working. They are also a teaching moment to learn, more care in the future!

We live in a world now where most young folks think they are "entitled" to everything their parents or grandparents earned the hard way. I can almost guarantee it's going to lead to the catastrophic collapse of our economy if the trend does not turn around. I always appreciate both your channels. After losing my job, totaling my car, and leaving the Mrs. Now have new job, own my new 'old truck,' no credit cards, and paying debt like it's going out of style. I am so happy I came across your channel! My husband and I were listening to one of your videos this morning about building a house that is cost effective and how extra "fluff" makes it more expensive. We are currently in a 2br apt with our 2 kiddos, paying off debt and thinking about homeownership in the future. We dont want an extravagant fancy house, just something that fits our families needs and some wants .. and some land to have our live stock and vegetable and fruit garden. Your videos have shown us that building a house doesnt have to cost absolute insane amounts of money. It can be done smart! Oh and by the way, I'm 25yrs old and listening. I am all ears and loving it!
It can be a tough life,, I get the whole movement and appeal but there are hard parts. I moved away 28 years ago and have paid for 4 homes and have zero debt today. I couldn't have done that living in Sandpoint. That being said the best part of this video is counseling people to stay out of debt!!! It's crippling!
That was a top-shelf quality video Josh. Glad you got to stop by Heath's and catch up. I usually sit in awe at the stuff he's doing and the progress he's making. It's info that comes out of videos like this that not only give us ideas and help our own progress, but that reassure us we bought a good slice of the pie up there. Yep, it's not flat, but we will certainly use that to our advantage.

This was extremely insightful. Not just on the financial aspect and the real world cost but on the short and long term of life. I am going to lose my job soon but should be able to make a good amount on selling my house. Enough to pay off all of our debt and have plenty left over for our next house. Really gonna take to heart the things learned in this video.
My wife and I built our home in a location only needing electrical and septic permit. 1200 sq. Ft. At $32000. All new material and all work done by ourselves. We are retired contractors. It can be done if you know how and what to do. We did not cut corners walls ar 6 in. For better efficiency. Cash is the big helper when doing this. We saved and payed as going.
Wish I had the know how to build a house from scratch. I live in CA so I'd need a lot of money and right now I only have $35k if I pulled out everything. Couldn't even buy the land 😂

I am 34yrs young & since the age of 17 i would always look around feeling the same way "there has to be more than just a back & forth life " i joined the military for 8yrs my husband & i have been together 17yrs since high school & 6 kids later we are living in a mobile home for a decent price just to save for a similar build i have always spoke here and there with my husband about this throughout the years & 3 weeks ago i woke up at 1:30 am & shaked my husband out of his sleep and said "F it we are doing it i don't care what it takes i dont want our kids to be a slave to this system and ofcourse he looked at me crazy but said lets jump & now we are making plans & trying to prep as much as we can and pick up cheap tools to try and get this ball rolling! And i love the fact that he said 25yr olds dont deserve those things because really its a lesson that most have to go through because we are knuckleheads before we have that Ahh ha moment . sorry for the long story lol

You guys are getting the outside the box thinking I stepped In about 10 years ago. I am 54 and been debt free for 9 years. I work in the oilfield and can work a lot of a little depending on work volume. Great video.
Here's a trick to build a house. I have a few acres of land that has a hillside, so I built a new bank barn with a full storage loft. The key is BARN, but it's framed as a ranch style house with a walk out basement. No inspections for wiring, plumbing, HVAC, septic tank, etc..., just a plain old 2,000 sqft barn (future dried in house). Cheap barn windows $25 each), and doors. No expensive insulation, drywall or kitchen. So now I have a barn (house) to store all my future house materials as I pay for them with cash. It will take a few years but the hard part of drying in the house is already done and there's no time limit because the barn is finished. When I'm ready to convert the barn to a house, I'll get the usual permits, installl the basement slab and finish the interior.

My sub-division home was paid for in 15, but I saved and purchased 3 rental homes over the years and retirement property in Oregon back 22 years ago..but I had to save when things were good and say no to a lot of wants..it’s all about discipline..never buying new cars wrenching on your own stuff, all while raising 5 kids in So Cal.. only enough credit cards for credit scores..it’s hard but you just have to look at where you want to be at 50
Totally agree with that!!! I did the same in 20 years. My net worth grows so fast now because of it. I counsel every young person I meet on what I did and how they can also. Discipline is all it takes! Who really need a new car??? NO ONE

If it was easy everyone would do it. I'm a general contractor for 50 years and rode the home market through the crashes and gave up trying to get ahead. So I bought 40 acres at 200 an acre lived on the property for 26 years off grid and couldn't be happier. Both boys are in there forties now and have their own corner and live off grid on the property. My grand kids also. Letting the world just pass us by.
Oh my goodness I nearly cried litsening to you guys. I, for a long time, have yearned to finally pay my debts off and live simply. How do you practically go about doing this? It's amazing all the time we waste on "education." What really matters in life is not taught in schools.
AnnaSophia Balbuena , I would highly recommend Dave Ramsey (financial expert and radio show host) who has written a couple of books on baby steps to get out of debt. You can probably get them at the library. You can also watch his videos on his TH-cam channel (excerpts from his show).

Sitting here smiling at your comments 12 years ago was living in New Orleans till a hurricane moved me out of town. Moved to a small community 30 miles from the nearest large city. My son in his wisdom kept telling me Dad you need to move closer to the big city for work. I said no. continue to say NO... There is much to be said for quality of life. I only got 2 acres and at my age no need for more. Medicare just added me to the rolls ... Your points are so very valid. Dont need to be living where I have to spend my life in a car for 45 minutes to go 4 miles down the road. Wow $12 /sqft is amazing. I am looking at $50 to get just the shell of my place done (includes septic and redo of well, as well as bringing in power) Property is paid for.. now it is just county taxes killing me LOL

Great video! You think just like my dad did! He bought an old house and it took 25 years to fully remodel and raise a family of 9 children. He built a cabin out of recycled materials from old buildings. He was very smart and very good with money. No credit cards. He told us if you dont have the money you dont buy it or save for it. Things are much different now. People have to have the 5 bedroom, 4 bath, 4 bay garage house. The bigger the better. They want it now, not over time like our parents did! Times have really changed!
One of the big reasons we looked for land where we did was because they had no building inspections/code enforcement. The began using a roving inspector the summer we started to build. Luckily we had an awesome inspector. The state was incredibly bad though.
I just turned 20 years old and I found a house for 49,000. I figure that i could have it payed off in less than 10 years. It is by no means anything special. But it is a damn good start. Is gonna take work and devotion, but it's a step in life and in ten years, i wont have a house payment. And like what he said about driving a 35 year old truck, mine isn't much newer. I have a 98 dodge diesel and a 93 dodge diesel. Yes they're old but reliable and cheap to fix. Great video!!
I have done kind of the same thing. But it took me getting older and wiser.. I bought a foreclosed house after the housing bust. Paid 20k for it . Did the work myself. You two people inspire others. I bought another cheap house and gutted the entire house and 2 years later almost done with it.
Its crazy to see how far Heath and RPR have come since this video was published. I've been watching them for a couple months now. I really hope to be in a similar position to be able to afford this kind of thing some day. Im 24 now, with a 230k home and a 40k truck payment. Probably not the best start. Thankfully the wife and I both have great jobs (I build airplanes and she's a nurse). Now I just need a solid game plan and to learn a TON about general home construction. I figure, if I can learn to build airplanes, I can learn to build a house lol Thanks for being an example for those of us who don't know where to start!
I watched my dad work his life away, and pay for his home and and raise a family. He was injured and unable to work, money got tight and he fell behind on taxes. I watched My dad lose his property that was paid for years ago because he couldn't afford the tax. If you don't think taxation is theft, that shows it is.
I understand taxes are the price we pay for living in this country But after being around the world a few times I don't care what the taxes cost it's worth it. Here in North Idaho we had our 10 acre put in to "forest land" and we pay about $32 a year in taxes, I know that's going to change as we get the house built but it still relatively inexpensive For all the services that the county provides.
The problem is if you fall on hard times or when you end up with a fixed income. It hasn't happened to us yet, but we see it happening to others in the area. Our next task is to come up with a more bullet-proof source of income.

We are building in a permit zone. Should be breaking ground in April. Already spent $2,000.00. In drive way, survey, architect and some of the permits, we don't have them all yet. Next step is getting an engineer out for soil text, etc. That is going to be about $1,200.00.
It’s all about a mindset ,younger generation have no clue and most would have a hard time saving money to accomplish the same goals that you guys are talking about I love the simplicity of going back to a debt-free way I’m living but of course there’s always that property tax. you guys are on the right track and I pray that God give you strength to accomplish your goals and be a blessing to yourselves and your family

Great vid, Heath talks alot of sense, but also seems able to learn from history. We've all chased the big bucks at some stage, but some come to realize that you end up chasing it for stuff that really doesn't enhance your life. The real trick is to look after what you have, and charge heavy for your skill set.
No offense but moving 17 times in 20 yrs is not a good thing, especially for kids even though your kids are great, it's still not ideal. You are the exception. Everyone has to do what they think is right for themselves at the time. I myself have been mortgage free since the age of 49, just from not being stupid with my money and doing the work myself.
I live in a suburb of Portland,OR and unfortunately a $280k house in our area is a starter house. Your cost of living in Idaho rural is much cheaper than here. my niece and her husband just moved to Idaho(Grangeville) a few months ago because of that. My sister is moving there next spring/summer to retire. I take my kids to school each day(3 miles each way and 8 minutes each way). I keep hearing about people making passive incomes online but I have never met anybody that has been successful at it. I am 55, and I have been through a lot of what you are talking about. I remember when gas was $5 a gallon (2007 I think it was) My wife and I had to spend over $600 a month just on gas. I think this whole situation in this country with the destruction of the middle class is like a rubber band that is stretching and is about to break. Kudos for thinking outside the box.
Ya, this is a blue collar mindset that I had for years and it held me back so much. Don’t shy away from the game that money is. You can’t hide from it, learn to play it. With rolling your losses on carryovers and buying with debt instead of cash, careful, intelligent folk will always come out ahead. I wish I was thought that instead of the ‘work hard and save’ lie. No bank savings pays you interest that equals inflation; you lose money every day it’s in a bank.
How would he know? Literally 80% of everything in his house was free or given at a huge discount for all the constant ads he does every video for people. They literally send out hundreds of emails to suppliers and whoever gives them something is whose stuff they use and plug it on the channel. You CANNOT go by anything at all about what they say for "cost per square foot"
It's interesting you reference how much things changed in the last 100 years. If you look at the financial/economic systems in the USA, the federal reserve and the IRS were both established around 100 years ago, and they have undermined our free society. The dollar has lost well over 90% of its value since then. I'd highly recommend watching videos here on youtube about the establishment of the federal reserve. And a guy named Mike Maloney has some great videos here on youtube about money and economics. Really educational and eye opening.
I started a business when I was 13 mowing lawns... turned it into a tool that made me retire at 31. I invested my personal time into income properties with my earnings and it rewarded me. People who won’t accept no for an answer and take risks usually win. The economy over the years made it hard to survive, I helped my tenants get back on their feet and I believe the lord rewarded me for it.
TBH. This type of discussion should be mandatory in high school and college.

I am going to lose my job soon but should be able to make a good amount on selling my house. Enough to pay off all of our debt and have plenty left over for our next house. Really gonna take to heart the things learned in this video.
My wife and I built our home in a location only needing electrical and septic permit.
1200 sq. Ft. At $32000. All new material and all work done by ourselves. We are retired contractors. It can be done if you know how and what to do. We did not cut corners walls ar 6 in. For better efficiency. Cash is the big helper when doing this. We saved and payed as going.

Wish I had the know how to build a house from scratch. I live in CA so I'd need a lot of money and right now I only have $35k if I pulled out everything. Couldn't even buy the land 😂
My son lives in California also that is sad the cost of living there. As always the more you make the more you spend. It's not always by choice.

I am 34yrs young & since the age of 17 i would always look around feeling the same way "there has to be more than just a back & forth life " i joined the military for 8yrs my husband & i have been together 17yrs since high school & 6 kids later we are living in a mobile home for a decent price just to save for a similar build i have always spoke here and there with my husband about this throughout the years & 3 weeks ago i woke up at 1:30 am & shaked my husband out of his sleep and said "F it we are doing it i don't care what it takes i dont want our kids to be a slave to this system and ofcourse he looked at me crazy but said lets jump & now we are making plans & trying to prep as much as we can and pick up cheap tools to try and get this ball rolling! And i love the fact that he said 25yr olds dont deserve those things because really its a lesson that most have to go through because we are knuckleheads before we have that Ahh ha moment . sorry for the long story lol

Here's a trick to build a house. I have a few acres of land that has a hillside, so I built a new bank barn with a full storage loft. The key is BARN, but it's framed as a ranch style house with a walk out basement. No inspections for wiring, plumbing, HVAC, septic tank, etc..., just a plain old 2,000 sqft barn (future dried in house). Cheap barn windows $25 each), and doors. No expensive insulation, drywall or kitchen. So now I have a barn (house) to store all my future house materials as I pay for them with cash. It will take a few years but the hard part of drying in the house is already done and there's no time limit because the barn is finished. When I'm ready to convert the barn to a house, I'll get the usual permits, installl the basement slab and finish the interior.
Thousands of hours,,, that is to be heard.. this man has worked his butt off. I would like to think I understand but many people out there don’t can’t or won’t comprehend the relevance of that statement.

My sub-division home was paid for in 15, but I saved and purchased 3 rental homes over the years and retirement property in Oregon back 22 years ago..but I had to save when things were good and say no to a lot of wants..it’s all about discipline..never buying new cars wrenching on your own stuff, all while raising 5 kids in So Cal.. only enough credit cards for credit scores..it’s hard but you just have to look at where you want to be at 50

If it was easy everyone would do it. I'm a general contractor for 50 years and rode the home market through the crashes and gave up trying to get ahead. So I bought 40 acres at 200 an acre lived on the property for 26 years off grid and couldn't be happier. Both boys are in there forties now and have their own corner and live off grid on the property. My grand kids also. Letting the world just pass us by.

AnnaSophia Balbuena , I would highly recommend Dave Ramsey (financial expert and radio show host) who has written a couple of books on baby steps to get out of debt. You can probably get them at the library. You can also watch his videos on his TH-cam channel (excerpts from his show).

Sitting here smiling at your comments 12 years ago was living in New Orleans till a hurricane moved me out of town. Moved to a small community 30 miles from the nearest large city. My son in his wisdom kept telling me Dad you need to move closer to the big city for work. I said no. continue to say NO... There is much to be said for quality of life. I only got 2 acres and at my age no need for more. Medicare just added me to the rolls ... Your points are so very valid. Dont need to be living where I have to spend my life in a car for 45 minutes to go 4 miles down the road. Wow $12 /sqft is amazing. I am looking at $50 to get just the shell of my place done (includes septic and redo of well, as well as bringing in power) Property is paid for.. now it is just county taxes killing me LOL

Great video! You think just like my dad did! He bought an old house and it took 25 years to fully remodel and raise a family of 9 children. He built a cabin out of recycled materials from old buildings. He was very smart and very good with money. No credit cards. He told us if you dont have the money you dont buy it or save for it. Things are much different now. People have to have the 5 bedroom, 4 bath, 4 bay garage house. The bigger the better. They want it now, not over time like our parents did! Times have really changed!
One of the big reasons we looked for land where we did was because they had no building inspections/code enforcement. The began using a roving inspector the summer we started to build. Luckily we had an awesome inspector. The state was incredibly bad though.

I just turned 20 years old and I found a house for 49,000. I figure that i could have it payed off in less than 10 years. It is by no means anything special. But it is a damn good start. Is gonna take work and devotion, but it's a step in life and in ten years, i wont have a house payment. And like what he said about driving a 35 year old truck, mine isn't much newer. I have a 98 dodge diesel and a 93 dodge diesel. Yes they're old but reliable and cheap to fix. Great video!!
I have done kind of the same thing. But it took me getting older and wiser.. I bought a foreclosed house after the housing bust. Paid 20k for it . Did the work myself. You two people inspire others. I bought another cheap house and gutted the entire house and 2 years later almost done with it.

I really hope to be in a similar position to be able to afford this kind of thing some day. Im 24 now, with a 230k home and a 40k truck payment. Probably not the best start. Thankfully the wife and I both have great jobs (I build airplanes and she's a nurse). Now I just need a solid game plan and to learn a TON about general home construction. I figure, if I can learn to build airplanes, I can learn to build a house lol

We have zero mortgage and used our 'extra' money to purchase more land (several times). Our biggest worry is taxes. Taxes never go away.
I watched my dad work his life away, and pay for his home and and raise a family. He was injured and unable to work, money got tight and he fell behind on taxes. I watched My dad lose his property that was paid for years ago because he couldn't afford the tax. If you don't think taxation is theft, that shows it is.
I understand taxes are the price we pay for living in this country But after being around the world a few times I don't care what the taxes cost it's worth it. Here in North Idaho we had our 10 acre put in to "forest land" and we pay about $32 a year in taxes, I know that's going to change as we get the house built but it still relatively inexpensive For all the services that the county provides.
The problem is if you fall on hard times or when you end up with a fixed income. It hasn't happened to us yet, but we see it happening to others in the area. Our next task is to come up with a more bullet-proof source of income.

This is the knowledge that needs to be taught in the 8th grade! Something I learned at 16 from a friends father and it changed my life! Really good stuff!
We are building in a permit zone. Should be breaking ground in April. Already spent $2,000.00. In drive way, survey, architect and some of the permits, we don't have them all yet. Next step is getting an engineer out for soil text, etc. That is going to be about $1,200.00.

Great vid, Heath talks alot of sense, but also seems able to learn from history. We've all chased the big bucks at some stage, but some come to realize that you end up chasing it for stuff that really doesn't enhance your life.
The real trick is to look after what you have, and charge heavy for your skill set.
No offense but moving 17 times in 20 yrs is not a good thing, especially for kids even though your kids are great, it's still not ideal. You are the exception. Everyone has to do what they think is right for themselves at the time. I myself have been mortgage free since the age of 49, just from not being stupid with my money and doing the work myself.
I used to live in Queen Crick!! Off Ironwood. 9 years ago. I don't miss it.

I live in a suburb of Portland,OR and unfortunately a $280k house in our area is a starter house. Your cost of living in Idaho rural is much cheaper than here. my niece and her husband just moved to Idaho(Grangeville) a few months ago because of that. My sister is moving there next spring/summer to retire. I take my kids to school each day(3 miles each way and 8 minutes each way). I keep hearing about people making passive incomes online but I have never met anybody that has been successful at it. I am 55, and I have been through a lot of what you are talking about. I remember when gas was $5 a gallon (2007 I think it was) My wife and I had to spend over $600 a month just on gas. I think this whole situation in this country with the destruction of the middle class is like a rubber band that is stretching and is about to break. Kudos for thinking outside the box.

Don’t shy away from the game that money is. You can’t hide from it, learn to play it. With rolling your losses on carryovers and buying with debt instead of cash, careful, intelligent folk will always come out ahead. I wish I was thought that instead of the ‘work hard and save’ lie. No bank savings pays you interest that equals inflation; you lose money every day it’s in a bank.

How would he know? Literally 80% of everything in his house was free or given at a huge discount for all the constant ads he does every video for people. They literally send out hundreds of emails to suppliers and whoever gives them something is whose stuff they use and plug it on the channel. You CANNOT go by anything at all about what they say for "cost per square foot"
Lol you're so spot on! He was literally only able to do all that because people keep giving them money and free stuff. No regular person could have.

It's interesting you reference how much things changed in the last 100 years. If you look at the financial/economic systems in the USA, the federal reserve and the IRS were both established around 100 years ago, and they have undermined our free society. The dollar has lost well over 90% of its value since then.
I'd highly recommend watching videos here on youtube about the establishment of the federal reserve. And a guy named Mike Maloney has some great videos here on youtube about money and economics. Really educational and eye opening.

I started a business when I was 13 mowing lawns... turned it into a tool that made me retire at 31. I invested my personal time into income properties with my earnings and it rewarded me. People who won’t accept no for an answer and take risks usually win. The economy over the years made it hard to survive, I helped my tenants get back on their feet and I believe the lord rewarded me for it.
