  • In this video I bring you along as I swap out the GDI fuel injectors on a 2017 Honda Pilot that has some serious fuel trim issues. It has been setting rich codes for both banks as well as imbalance codes. The customer is finally ready to fix it so let's get after it. -Enjoy!

    I love when service data says "remove and discard". I did a steering rack on a Traverse yesterday and service data says to discard the gigantic subframe bolts, after 1 use they are ruined. Funny thing is, no dealers stock the bolts and we all know every single traverse has had the subframe bolts removed to do timing chains.

      If they're torque-to-yield bolts, reuse is problematic because the bolts have been stretched when installed and can break if reused.

    • @fucamaroo

      They call that torque to fail I guess.

      @@buckhorncortez The specifc bolts he mentioned...I have yet to see a degree angle as part of the torque spec so odds are preety likely they are not torque to yeild. Most GM FWD/AWD subframe bolts as far back as the A-body have been in excess of 10mmthread diameter. I do not want to be the guy who has to "yield" those bolts and the sad body nuts would likely never survive it anyway.

    • @mannys9130
      @mannys9130 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@michaelkrenzer3296 Good point. Torque to yield bolts generally have a skinnier shank section which is the site of controlled plastic deformation. The degree torque step is the biggest hint at a torque to yield. I think the discarding is based on liability principle. I have always reused brake caliper slide pin bolts despite the Mercedes and Toyota FSM of my cars calling for replacement. If the fastener is not corroded, the threads look intact, not galled, not pulled at an angle from torquing, and the head to shank area does not look to be twisted or stretched, I reuse them. I do however, A L W A Y S clean the factory Loctite off the bolts completely, spray them off with brake cleaner as well as the bolt holes, and put blue Loctite back on them. If the principle is to replace the bolts due to the possibility of the tech not putting loctite back on them (nearly every factory replacement brake bolts I have seen has pre-applied Loctite), I am in the clear. Very polarizing decision for some reason. My boss hated it. "Never Loctite a brake part bolt!!! Stupid!" I always quipped back "Do you enjoy the idea of your brake caliper or bracket flopping around damaging the rim, hub, and possibly killing you? What's the matter with you? I'd rather need to torch every single one of these future comebacks than ship a car with no Loctite. I sure as hell ain't putting antiseize on them so don't even ask. THAT is stupid." TL;DR if it has no stretch shank section and it isn't aluminum and it has no degree torque step in the FSM, clean it off thoroughly and reuse it with new Loctite. No problems in my conscious or mind about doing that. 👍 Have and will do it on my personal vehicles and the vehicles of my loved ones.

    As a Honda tech whos done this same exact job mucho amount of times, I gotta say you kicked ass and i loved this video.
    As i watched i wanted to give you some tips, my trick to remove that upper intake is loosen those 3 ten mils on the computer, as opposed to popping off the cover, gives u just that little amount of clearance, trust me u can get a wrench in there between that bracket. Also, no need to try an unplug the injectors before you yank the fuel rail off, or unplug the high pressure pump. and YES honda does want you to replace that joint pipe in conjunction, if the jobs under warranty the parts kit will come with a new pipe, however when im doing it customer pay, all the customer usually buys is just the injectors. Your the first ive ever seen install them into the rail them slip that as an assembly back into the head, hell i might try that myself next time. i usually silicone s[ray the outside of the injectors, slip them into the head, grease that o ring on the outside of them, and then install the pipe on top of them.
    Nice job

  • @christopherhylton8462

    Eric, I work at a Honda dealer and can say, without a doubt your diagnosis was on point. Any direct injected 3.5 that comes into the bay with p0300 class codes, bank lean or rich codes, or catalyst efficiency codes is caused by fuel injector(s). Honda has a service kit, as per the a certain service bulletin publish I know by heart, that comes with all injectors, seals and gaskets, high pressure tube, and the lubricant that is used on the coupling ends of the high pressure line (comes in a small syringe) to ensure leak-proof connection. Typical, I replace at least 3 sets of injectors in a months time, it is a common issue, it seems to occur when the injectors have 50 to 60k miles on them. Just a tip, when I do them, I install the injector into the heads first then install the rails on them. That way, I can twist them slightly back and forth and actually feel the injectors slip into their happy place. Also, that EVAP purge sensor on the side of the intake, I just remove the two 8mm bolts holding it to the intake and remove the whole thing with the hose and electrical connector still hooked up. Nice job.

    • @christopherhylton8462
      @christopherhylton8462 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danr1920 Yes, the problem for some reason is not as common on the 4 cylinders. Actually, I personally have never had to replace the injectors on a 4 cyl, but that is not to say no has. It is the 3.5 V6's mainly and even most of them do go beyond 60k miles with no issues. I suspect the self-diagnostic look-up tables programmed in the 4cyl. model have a wider range of tolerance before it commands the MIL to come on. I might be totally wrong but that is my guess.

    Great video. Honda claims to have some proprietary tricks to greatly reduce DI related carbon build up, partly using their VVT, and it seems to work on all their DI engines especially the later ones. The manifold interference was not typical for Honda and I agree their OEM service data is sparse and cryptic and sometimes even the little they give you isn’t correct.

    • @crabmansteve6844
      @crabmansteve6844 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Honda does it good, newer Toyota DI looks downright clean on top of the piston heads and valves. I was amazed the first time I popped one of those bad boys open and stuck a camera in. It was a 112k mile car to boot.

    • @legros731
      @legros731 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It not the top of the piston the problem it the intake valve that gum up for the lack of fuel cleaning them ence why many manufacturers are now using both direct injection and port injection to keep the valve clean

    • @legros731
      @legros731 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The vvt cannot clean the intake valve old port injection system rely on the fuel beimg injected before the valve to keep them clean
      With direct injection this is the problem carbon build up on the intake valve and the engine run like crap

    Mr. O.
    I have a jump box, test light, home made leads, switch, multimeter and some know how. From this I am usually able to rig a test. I have a side hustle and I win some and lose some.
    My last win was a dead starter. I was able to break down that the relay, solenoid, motor were all sound individually sound. But power would only activate the solenoid but not turn the motor. The motor itself was sound.
    I assumed the ground was sound (rookie move) and so my guess was the switch. I diagnosed a bad switch and a new starter assembly fixed things. Plenty holes in my analysis.
    My last fail was an engine overheat. Thermostat housing was cracked. I suggested a new thermostat as well.
    Struggled with the coolant temp sensor test (resistantance?).
    Fans, relays sound but they would not kick on. I was stumped.
    Following up with the customer, coolant level was low. Rookie move.
    I hate guessing and I want to improve. I am shaky with electrical diagrams, but I am always practicing new tests, poking at something.
    Any thoughts on my next move. Keep doing this or a class?
    I think I am ready for a poweprobe 4 and a relay test kit to simplify my test rig.
    1. Take a class? or
    2. Just keep taking on problems?
    Thoughts?
    Best wishes.

    @11:30 Honda designed their GDI system and mounted the GDI injectors in a manner such that fuel comes into contact with the intake valves. Honda uses solenoid style GDI injectors instead of the much more expensive piezo injectors.

    An old mechanics trick to safely decrease pressure in any high pressure fuel line (especially modern common rail diesels) is to start the motor, then remove the electric fuel pump fuse and let it idle until it stalls.

    There's another procedure I've never seen, thank you. I can see why companies would be a little paranoid about fuel leaks, it's an area you can't see after you're done. I'm thinking the best way to check for a fuel leak would be before the intake goes on, so you can see a leak before it's all together. You can't run, but maybe just turn the key on and look for fuel pressure and a leaking connection?

      Has to be cranking to hit the 300-1000PSI from the HPFP. They normally run off a cam lobe (or in some cases a cam lobe per cylinder bank).
