  • Hi guys! This is a video that I made a while ago and I just haven't had reason to post it. In it I go over all steps for preparing your water colour paper for painting. It's a simple how to and stretching is necessary if you're going to be painting with water colours or gouache, so take a look!

    Thank you Shayda, I haven’t stretched watercolour paper like this since highschool and I just bought some 300lb Arches to make a series of 4 watercolour landscape paintings at the same time, challenging myself to not be afraid of ruining it all so watching this and thank you for saying better to stretch even the over 140lb paper because it is a big investment so I don’t want to feel like I’ve ruined it before I even put paint down! Making a seasons series for my parents to have something else on their walls 😅 wish me luck

    Great video, well presented. I’ve been stretching paper for a little while for my pencil drawing and the difference it makes is worth the time taken. One thing I did notice, you don’t wear gloves to protect the paper from the oils in your hands. Once you have oil in the paper it does stand out, for drawing anyway. Great tutorial for those who haven’t adopted this method.

    • @BrendaFOBRocks
      @BrendaFOBRocks 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      hii, late response but masking tape won't stick to wet paper the way that gum tape does. gum tape is activated by water, so a masking tape will slip on wet paper. you can use masking tape to tape down your watercolor paper and it will help with the buckling though!

    • @shaustin22
      @shaustin22 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I think this is a little too wet. You aren’t supposed to “soak” the paper because it can disturb the sizing. It’s not wallpaper. Masking tape on dry paper and then lightly moistening it works better in my opinion. You should also dry the paper with a hair dryer and NOT let it air dry because it can dry unevenly. This comes from the experts out there.

      Bueno, no siempre es necesario gastar dinero en productos muy caros para tener buena técnica. El talento lo tienes igualmente pintes con acuarelas de 10€ o con Winsor and Newton. Y no todos los expertos en acuarela mojan el papel así. Los hay incluso que no lo mojan, depende del resultado que desees obtener. Puedes mojar la lámina y dejarla secar pegada en los azulejos de la ducha limpios. Por otro lado, yo también he tenido mascotas en casa y no tenía el material lleno de pelos. Cuando empieces a pintar limpia la zona de trabajo y tu ropa, y listo.

When you start painting, clean the work area and your clothes, and voila.

      Okay, Pchy kins :-)
      How very kind you are. I'm brand new to watercolor, I have only received some of my paint tubes, and still waiting on larger order to arrive with a little more paint and and a couple blocks of paper. I forgot to take quite a few things into account. I don't have any proper tape, or a board, and there are other things I'll need for sure. But, I'll have to collect my supplies a bit slowly; but that's alright. This way I won't purchase a bunch of things I haven't carefully chosen, right.
      I think I'm just going to go ahead and make a mixing color chart with the 8 pigments I already gotten. I just want to swatch and mix so bad! I may tape down this smooth card stock and just go for it. And I am actually going to use the tin my set of 72 Prismacolor pencils came in for my palette and mixing tray. At least for a trial. I'm just going to squeeze in tiny dollops of paint. It is so so pigmented! I found this out when I removed the cap of the phytlo blue...I was just so curious, and as I was giving it a little sniff, haha, a bit just sort of just came on up through the opening. So I took that bit and just rubbed it in one corner of my tin, luckily it was already perfect and clean. Anyway, there was the tiniest bit of color on my finger, and rather than washing it off, I dabbed it in the center of a flower I had drawn and lightly colored with the wax based colored pencils , and wowzers! I added water with my hand from my drinking glass, haha...it was the only thing available, and it made a beautiful spread of color over the whole small sheet of card stock.
      I've collected so many items from around the house to try out for different things. Also, I'm starting out with a very small palette, as I wish to learn about the pigments and how they mix and everything. I know I'll likely change my personal palette up as time goes on. I'm quite excited! Thank you so much for sharing with me and everyone!!!

      Yes, the board; I know I need something large and strong. The only thing I can think of that I have is a giant, gorgeous mirror. Temporarily, until I can get a real board, do you think this will work? I have plenty of space to lie it on the dining room table, and protect the wood around the edges of the mirror with towels and just be super careful. There are no children or anyone here to disturb it. Or, the other option is to use a piece of my wood furniture, but that seems like it would be difficult to keep protected. Thank you so much for helping me!!! I really appreciate you :-)

    • @staceybrister
      @staceybrister 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oops, I forgot to mention, there is a very nice piece of 24"x18" wood, that slides out of my desk. It's a very unusual desk. It's more like a nice square 48"x48" table with one of the corners having a 28" cut out, and in the center of this is where the removable piece of wood is, and there is a cubby built in just under this piece. I've been thinking of just using, I believe it would be a router? Or a drill with a special bit, and making different angles of slots on the edges of the cubby so that I could slide the piece of wood into, like to make an easle! The top of the cubby is what holds the piece of wood in place. The integrity of the desk would not be lessened, due to how sturdy this thing was built. I wonder if any of that makes sense...lol! And then it would be my super cool art center, with a shelf setting against the wall strait ahead of me. You know the ones that came with the little girls furniture of the 70's...? I still have mine from the chesy which is 36" across and holds a lot of items :)

      The reason you need the special kraft paper tape is that you're wetting your paper completely and it takes a special tape to stick to something wet. A good art store should carry this tape and you can usually get a very large roll for under $10. Once you've prepped your board, wait for your paper and tape to dry completely before you begin painting. :)

    What if it’s exactly 140 lb?

    • @ronaldbeaton3524
      @ronaldbeaton3524 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stretch it. I would not recommend using anything less than 140 lb anyway. I think 90 lb is the only standard weight below 140 lb. 90 lb paper might not hold up too well if you paint too wet or scrub on it too hard with your brushes or other tools. I do not think that masking fluid would work that well either. It might be fine if money is an issue as a beginner that is just experimenting. Other than that, I would use a high quality paper such as Arches and at least a 140 lb. I would soak it for up to 10 minutes in cool to lukewarm water until it gets quite limp. If you do not want to take a chance on the tape not holding well I would also use thumb tacks or staples every 2-3 inches. Stretched paper should be tight as a drum which requires a good amount of holding strength around the perimeter of the paper. You should cut off the taped edge of the paper when your painting is finished. As long as you do not over soak the paper it should not remove too much of the sizing used in the paper. A more quality paper can have a better sizing process which is done internally while being made and also externally afterward. Soaking and sponging of the excess water can also be benificial if the paper has too much sizing that does not allow the paint to soak in enough to your liking. Just my 2 cents worth. : )

  • @hank66
    @hank66 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Unfortunately this method of submerging the paper will remove the sizing from the watercolor paper. Also, masking tape over dry paper works better and is easy to remove when the painting is dry.
