I’m agreement with you - I have such a hard time with a blank page as it is. If I took all that time and effort for every piece of watercolor paper I painted on, it would put far too much pressure on each painting for me! I have to keep things simple 😌
Thank you Emma! All I paint are little Christmas cards and was disheartened when they buckled.I actually said to my husband that I was going to iron them and now feel totally vindicated in doing so! Painting is a lovely enjoyable experience and we shouldn't worry so much. Soaking the paper for little Christmas cards would put me off the pleasure of making them, so will take out my mighty iron and give it a go! Thank you!
Aha, a good topic for us beginners learning by trial and error. I guess it depends on the quality of paper you are using and how wet it's going to get. I have also been trying taping and not taping the borders, trying masking (decorators) tape or gummed paper tape. So far, the easiest for me has been to wet BOTH sides of the paper, taking care not to use too much water and cover the paper equally - a sponge or large flat brush works for me.
Good info! I wanted to share that I use book binding glue to secure an arches pad of watercolor and as long as I’m not painting extremely wet art, it stays put. I’m an amateur painter and it works for me. As for actual arches block pads, I ask for them for my bday, moms day and Xmas and also keep an eye out so I can share sales with hubby. Win/win.
Your awesome video is right on time. I was wondering how to uncurl the painting I did that I want to use on a greeting card. Now I know. Also, I learned what a block is. I bought one because it was the size paper I wanted, but I had no idea what the significance of a block vs. a tablet is. Now I know. Thank you for all you do. I learn so much from you!
I think it all depends on the quality/type of paper you use. I found that when I bought 100% cotton paper (not Arches, the cheapest one I found locally) and tried that, it seemed to work much better. During the painting process when I had it taped down it still buckled, but after drying whilst still being taped down it seemed to shrink back much better that the 100% cellulose paper I used before. 🤓
Thank you Emma ❤ I didn't know this was a thing as well. Everyone I needed to flatten my painting I use something flat to put on top of it and leave it there for a day or so. And it's flat. This video was very helpful.
Good topic. After spraying the back with water, I use an old thick dictionary and a 15 lb weight...double that for larger pieces. I leave it for at least 24 hours. Works everytime and perfectly flat.
thank you for this video I was recently informed about stretching paper. thank you for permission to do what works best for me...and the helpful tips on how to flatten the paper after painting! you're the BEST!
Thank you so much for the important information. I am an extremely new beginner of watercoloring and therefore I also do mixed media. Being on a budget with medical needs I have to definitely try to keep and reuse what I have. If you're interested I will pay for shipping on the paintings that you would love to throw away so that I can use them for mixed media. You can message me if you're interested in this. I can also at that time send you my very first try at ATC cards so I believe they're called
A technique I learned is before you make your watercolor painting, wet the back of the paper (like you shared) and also spray the surface that you paint on(although that has to be non-porous). I use a white glass cutting board just for water coloring. Once both are sprayed with water, the paper sticks to the glass and stays flat!! You can also, then, spray or brush just water on the top of the paper to make beautiful washes, more control of where the colors go. They don’t bleed as much, but it’s so cool and different. I was able to paint an adorable duck in the water. Give it a go and see if you like it. I have the link if you’d like, but it’s another TH-camr and I don’t want to post it on your channel.
Hi Emma, thanks for all you do! Could you share the names of the art books that appear behind you on the bookshelf? Just curious about what art reference books you have found useful :)
iron works fine. I iron paper on the back. twenty to thirty second. I never iron more than thirty seconds, and of course, I iron the back of the paper. I lay the paper on a corkboard. I set up the iron for wool.
Thank you for this video! Stretching paper (due to neck damage) is difficult at best for me. I will tape all four sides onto my clipboard but found blue painters tape just lifts off if any water touches it? Same with masking tape so can you suggest a tape that won’t start pulling up if any water touches it or when do wet on wet? Tyvm
Any suggestions for the 100% Cotton journals? Did get Etchers but filling the one I have first. By the way I ordered the Craftamo brushes went thru my bank 1/21/21 and they claim I can expect shipment in May. Just a word maybe this has only happened to me but feel that is a long wait.
Report it to your. credit card. Nobody should pay for merchandise that takes four months to arrive. I would ask for help in getting your money refunded. I would have a fit!
I tape down my watercolour paper 140gsm, down and it still buckles terribly. So bad that I can’t continue to paint on it until it dries. Then is flattened a bit.

Yup, great if you like working wet on wet. Or just use 300# paper. More expensive, but stays wet longer and mostly removes need to stretch.
Great tip Mark. Thank you

‘I lost my iron’ 🤪🤪 yeah, me too! Thanks for sharing Emma 👍
I've had good results using my laminator. Lightly spritz the back and run it through.
Oh interesting!
Thank you so much!!! You have no idea how excited I am to get back into it!!!!
Your studio looks really smart, Emma. And your advice re flattening warped paintings is really useful. Big thank yous!
🌻💛🌻

Thanks for this, I have been wondering about stretching my paper.
Emma, thanks for this. Saves on not buying block paper!
I've also wet the back and use a non porous board to paint on. Then turn it over, wash my painting, then paint...of course tape down too..
Very helpful, Emma! Thank you for sharing!
Never heard of doing that, and my imagination really had fun picturing just HOW I could stretch that with my hands from each corner and edges. lol!!
THANK YOU I LIKE YOUR WAY MUCH BETTER THAT IS THE WAY I HAVE BEEN DOING IT. GLAD SOMEONE ELSE IS ALSO WITH PAINTERS TAPE

I’m with you. I just wet the back and weight it down after I’m done if it’s not a block

Yes! I would love to see too!

Gum tape
Thanks for the very informative video, Emma! I would love to know more about the art books that I can spot on your shelf ☺️
not gonna lie, didnt even know stretching water-color paper was a thing....
Same here... lol
I didn’t for the longest time either! Haha
I didn't either!!
@Mathew Gordon ...
This is helpful thank you!
I've had trouble with either the paint bleeding through the tape, or the tape tearing the paper when I remove it. How can I prevent this?

@@Angie-pl3uw it says on the website that they are on sale for preorder to be delivered in may. It states it clearly in the description.
Tips for taking warping out of 140 lbs. watercolor paper after the painting is complete.
Very Informative... Probably because I am a total noob... Hehe btw good luck for the future I do hope you succeed!
Great information!

Thank you for this!
Thanks Emma. 👏👏🥰
Don’t get it wet, just pile a bunch of books on the painting over night. It’s completely flat in the morning.
Did this work?
I've been following all your work for ages now but never asked if you have a Patreon site ? X
I don’t. X
Have to? Well, if you don’t, it warps like crazy and looks like garbage.
Emma, come to al Islam n success
