These are the best tips to surviving a gunshot wound (I'm a Navy Corpsman Veteran): 1. Plug the wound. DO NOT REMOVE THE BULLET if it is still around. Just like a knife wound, removing a bullet can make blood loss worse. 2. Put a tourniquet on the wound ASAP/put pressure on the wound 3. Keep calm and control your breathing. Rapid breathing and/or panicking will cause blood to flow faster, which only speeds up the process of dying in a gunshot wound case. Take shallow breathes in through the nose and out through the mouth. 4. Minimize movement. Movement=bloodflow=more bleeding to the wound. 5. If a limb is where the wound is, put it above the heart. If the chest/back is where the injury is at, you're SOL on this step. 6. If you have something cold/frozen, put it above your heart to slow down blood flow. 7. If others are around, they need to get you help. If you are alone, pray to whoever or whatever you believe in and get right with them quick because you're joining them soon. This way at least you have peace before you go and maybe your soul will be preserved in a desirable manner.

Just missed the femoral artery, and bounced off the femur, before exiting, base first. Friend who shot me was an army medic, wife an OR trauma nurse, their daughter a veterinarian, and I was a level 1 EMT. Only better place where it could have happened would have been in front of the ER doors.

As a gunshot survivor, the main thing is not to panic. Panic will cause your blood loss to skyrocket. I lost 2 liters of blood and it would have been a LOT more if I had panicked.

Lets be honest, if you get hit in the chest or stomach the last thing you will be able to do is think clearly enough to do much of anything but try to scream for help if you even can. I've been shot in the legs and it was nuts but I couldn't imagine what the pain from a gut shot must be like.
If you make it to the hospital alive you have a 90%+ chance of survival. What isn't often discussed is that you'll probably feel the effects for the rest of your life.
I got shot in the leg with a 7.62 in 2011 and I cannot begin to tell you just how badly it hurt. I didn't know that level of pain was imaginable. It shattered both bones in my calf, ruptured 2 arteries and basically turned 30% of my calf muscle into mush. I almost bled out and I was very, VERY lucky to have survived, let alone not to have had to have the leg amputated.
As a .40 shot survivor (I keep my calve too and have only one of my bones shattered), I salute you. Yes, the pain is another level. I still have nightmares to this day.
Quick note about tourniquets, make sure you know what time you applied it. Doctors WILL ask so they know how long a limb has been without steady blood flow, so the best thing to do is actually write the time the tourniquet was tied on the person's head or limb

Ive been shot in the chest before and its very important to stay calm. Concentrate on breathing and not panicking because that will cause you to lose more blood. You have to stay positive and focus on surviving or you will cause panic and that will cause your blood to rush out of the wounded area quicker.

3:27 Not every bullet will fragment. Hollow point bullets will mushroom out, but that doesn't mean they will fragment. Bullet fragmentation is not a sure thing, you can have one bullet fragment, and another bullet from the same magazine and gun not fragment. It's very dependent on what the bullet hits. Also, this talk of bullets bouncing around is a falsehood. Bull can deflect a bullet, because a bullet has such low mass, but the angle of deflection is very limited. The reality is you might see someone get shot, have the bullet strike a rib as it enters or exits the body, and then when it comes out the side its changed its angle by about 15 degrees or so. When you say "bouncing around" that implies multiple redirections, but if a bullet could do that, then it would be too hazardous to shoot, because that would mean the bullet could exit the body in any direction, even directed back at the shooter.
Gain fire superiority/ get to cover. Tourniquet the limbs, pack the junctions, seal the box. Anything outside of that is left for more advance stuff for medics.
And all seriousness, getting shot is the one thing that terrorizes me. I used to have dreams about it and even in my dreams I could feel the pain and taste lead.
