Suburban Japan: Bicycle Wars

  • ...and other dark secrets inside a quiet Japanese neighborhood.
Ever wondered what life in suburban Japan looks like?
A place where people buy their food in corner stores and almost no one owns a car. If you’re a young housewife with one or two children, you pile your kids on a bicycle to do your daily shopping. Office workers ride their bicycles to the local train station, but this is where things get complicated. Parking it in a bicycle lot can cost over $700 a year, so most people leave their bicycles on the street. That’s illegal, and every couple of weeks the government shows up with a flatbed truck to haul everyone’s bicycles away.
If you want it back then you have to track it down to one of twenty lots - usually under a highway overpass - and then comb through thousands of similar bicycles until you find yours. Pay the ransom and you’re free to pedal home.
Best of all, in two short weeks you get to do it all over again.

In Japan you dont even need a bike lock. Japanese people have a low crime rate.

You'll find your bike faster if you paint it in a fluorescent yellow color!

I like how 2:09 says Osaka when this video is set in Fujisawa

Good catch! I spent six months in each place and didn't realize I was combining footage when I got around to editing the story. The women shopping happens in Fujisawa. The bike parking issue was filmed in Osaka. As I'm sure you know, both circumstances would apply to almost any Japanese city....

It seems in this case, it's best to know your serial number and add different accessories to differentiate your bike. Tho, I think it's better to buy the parking.

So could anyone just come take whatever bike they claim is theirs? Is there any way the government verifies ownership through serial numbers on sales receipts? Seems like a good way someone could claim a much more expensive bike is theirs.

I raised this question as well and everyone (Japanese) looked at me in bafflement. "Why would you take a bike that isn't yours?" they asked. A more practical answer: most of these bikes are cheap, 1-3 speed beater bikes with baskets in front that are ridden a mile or two to the train station. I know several people who moved and just left their bike at the station - they figured they're buy a new one ($10-$30) at their new place. The stored bikes are very well organized by pickup date and place - and that's the first thing you tell the attendant. Then you describe your bike by color, make, etc. It's highly unlikely that you could guess the details of an expensive bike and actually have one match it among those picked up your stated date and location.

@@OurHumanPlanet Also when buying a bike the person fills out a registration form at the shop and that is sent to the local police so when writing a citation they will know who owns it. And do not get caught riding a bike that is not yours.
