My opinion, it is good for consumers, however for each car you sell, you'll have to produce 1.3-1.5 battery and battery is the most expensive part of the car. Not to mention you'll have to have workers maintaining those machines, the cost is hugely added. That's why I personally feel NIO can't go bigly like Tesla's scale, and in the tech industry, the big one eats most of shares, like TSMC, Apple.

Only 3% of Chinese housing are single-family houses. Most people live in condos and apartments, it's extremely scarce for Chinese EV owners to charge at home overnight. Unlike the U.S., this is why NIO pushes battery swapping.

though many Chinese lives in apartments, most of them will buy an underground parking spot which means that it’s feasible to install charging gears. I just think that the meaning of this battery-swapping technology is to keep the value of your EV in the long run when using it.

Out of the three major advantages for battery swapping, i rank them this way in terms of its value created
1, Range is no longer a fixed (and depreciating) spec of your car. You can always choose to upgrade to the latest battery technology without changing the car
2, it enables Baas model that widens TAM and the subsequent recurring revenue (say a car lasts 15 yrs and Baas breaks even at 6th yr)

This goes back to a cultural thing. Americans are more individual-centered, so buying a car needs your own battery. Chinese are more flexible towards owning something, yet having part of it being public. The battery sharing model might be very good in offseting the depreciation in value of the battery pack, by which you would have to exchange your whole Tesla. Both interesting prospects indeed.

Battery swapping is not meant to replace charging. One of the biggest advantages is that you can choose the capacity of the battery based on your needs. E.g. for my daily commute I can use a smaller battery, therefore reducing the weight of the vehicle and being more energy efficient, and replace it with a bigger battery if I go on a road trip

The solution should be: put a 25kWh battery in the car as permanent, so that for short commutes, swapping isn’t needed. Keep space for rest 75-200 kWh for swapping. You can put majorly all charging stations within the cities and put swapping stations outside the cities mostly. A 25kWh battery will also greatly reduce the overall weight of the car, improving range performance, which should come out to be atleast 7km/kWh. That is 170km on a small battery, more than enough.... also, a small battery is faster to charge.

swap stations look like there is only 1 station with an onsite employee (24/7) while a supercharger station has 10 to 20+ stations with no employees on site. I guess if you can't charge at home (like if you live in an apartment in the city and park on the street) then swap makes a little more sense unless you use your car to shop, most grocery stores/malls have charging now and are building out infrastructure at a crazy pace.

  • @obsidianstatue

Battery swapping is a necessity for China, because most Urban Chinese lives in Apartments their building might not have the space for personal charging station. or the infrastructure might be too old. Necessity is the mother of inventions.
Battery swap is the future, imagine a smart city filled with Internet of Things where everything is connected. Connecting cars with everything else. roadside cameras can communicate with autonomous cars helping it to plan the least congested route. Battery swap stations can also act as mini power storage stations, recharging during off peak periods and, releasing some stored electricity during peak usage hours.
China in the future will be the center for this sort of innovation, Huawei is already moving into the Vehicle to everything operating system, Their HiCar system for smart EVs is like Android for Smartphones.
Zoomed out, this type of smart IoT can be extended to entire cities, where the a Smart City can efficiently manage traffic, electricity generation and services.

Not owning the battery eliminates the risk for the client of battery failure or battery loss of capacity. Specifically the last one - loss of capacity is a big advantage to the NIO's battery swapping strategy. When batteries are charged at stations they are not fast charged which protects the battery's capacity. Fast charging and using the battery down to 0% and up to 100% charge are the two highers contributors to battery capacity loss. Also, when the battery is charged In a swapping station the 0 to 10 and 90 to 100% capacity can be locked by software so it doesn't get damaged. And last but not least Nios clients can choose to own or lease a battery.

Yes you have a NIO house, but there are 100 other chinese EV brands popping up everywhere. Even as Nio will always be backed by the government. A chinese does confirm there is no better car than a German car. For me personally I tested this Nio and Tesla. It has some nice tech yes. But the looks are just not for me. I go for drive and that is German car like BMW. If Nio can throw that in the mix in the next 30 years. Then maybe i will give it a try, same as Tesla

Anyone remember Better Place's attempt at the battery swapping EV model? That didn't go too well.

Are those single use stations practical? If there is only one car in line, that's great, but what if you have a line of cars waiting to be swapped? And will they have enough charged battery for every car? Picture that, 5 min each car, which means time will add up and people would have already charged up their vehicle at a charging station.

  • @gunit1199

I wonder how long will a battery swap will take when 10 Cars show up at the same time. Tesla just built a Supercharging Station with 72 Stalls. I dont think NIO can afford to build so expensive stations and hire so much People only to maintain these stations

The second generation nio swap stations that are going up in Europe soon will have no attendant working it's completely autonomous. I'm sure they will make stations with more than just one swapping stall. It will be just like gas stations today.

give the company time. You can't expect anyone to grow that fast. While they are ramping up car productions they are also building new stations too

The problem with battery swapping is that, building these station is very expensive compared to a battery charger, thus it will have smaller network.

gas selling companies will try to live off charging stations that's why i think they will make it harder for NIO to grow in US at least

Test drove both Nio es6 and Tesla model Y recently. Other than the range of entry level Nio is not as good, Nio ES6 felt like a car belong to the luxurious segment with its build quality and interior while having competitive price to Tesla while also having the option to do battery swap. Probably gonna buy the new Nio sedan once it’s released

Dont forget BYD as a direct Tesla competitor. BYD is already more vertically integrated with own batteries, semiconductors, car electronics than any other EV company worldwide.
