I love this swap off coop kinda vibe. Both personally involved and invested, skilled and knowledgable, feed off of each others successes and good vibes. Not compatible with most coop games, but a lovely setup for SMB3.

That's actually the second time this category is used ;) There was a similar run 1 year or 2 ago.

still one of the most memorable dramatic moments in a gdq for me. i actually went back and watched all the moments after he mentioned it. the height of sportsmanship, friendship and performance.

I don't think Mitch can have an appearance at a GDQ event ever again without at least one reference to the infamous Poo Stomp.

I grew up in these times and looking back and just breezing threw the game doesn’t really give it justice , in 1991 when u discovered the hammer broke the rock in world 2 and opened up that secret area , that was amazing , it really was and I remember how amazed I was watching my big bros discover it , we live in a time where everything is figured out and the beauty of those early games , which is very hard to capture , is when they came out , the video game creators made these secrets , and the world at that time wasn’t connected by the internet and they were truely secrets and when u figured them out it was something really special
The early days of video games before the internet was the golden age of video games where u , and u alone and maybe some friends had to figure out the secrets the video game creators coded , u couldn’t just go online and figure it out , this is early 90s talk , then we all got dial up and cheat cc came along , the earliest to my knowledge way too cheat the video game and it was all down hill since
I grew up in the early nineties and me and my few older bros played Nintendo and when someone figured out something like using the hammer in the corner of world two , it was breath taking to my 5 year old mind , it was amazing

I remmeber when I played this as a kid and world 8 was SO HARD! So I used to go to world 4 2-3 times to fight the hammer bros and stock up on clouds and p wings.

If you hadn't gotten an answer before, at a previous event GrandPooBear died during an All Forts race and stomped his feet and jarred Mitch's console, causing it to lock up. What's the infamous console bump?
During a SMB3 race during SGDQ 2018, Mitch accidently bumped his NES causing it to crash not once but twice. The first time it happened his opponent allowed Mitch to catch up but it happened again near the end of the race. Both runners were in good spirits though, so it was all good
During a GDQ Grand Poobear bumped the console with his foot that Mitch was playing on and it cut off.
GrandPooBear stomped his foot at GDQ during a run, and it made the NES reset.
Mitch raced grand poo bear at a gdq and stomped the floor, freezing mitch's console
During a gdq race between Mitch and Grandpoo, towards the end of world 8, Poo accidentally kicked the toe into Mitch's reset button. Poo got sooo embarrassed, but Mitch just ran through it all really quickly, and caught up, while Poo waited, and then they did the final part of the race

Huh. I didn't know that the N-Spade bonus only tripped once at each 80k in 2p games. Nor did I know that it could only be triggered once per world. Odd note about that, though, is that if you get enough points in one level for multiple Spades, it triggers them ALL on the same space and you get stuck going through them sequentially if you enter it.
I'm surprised 100% doesn't include "all the bonus coin ships you get from autoscrollers"
The hammer bros turn into them, and the coin ships are slower by like a minute each. Though I would watch an all coin ship run...
Poo Stomp

Why do they need to manage points?
It's what the n-card game spawn is attached to. We do a pretty in-depth explanation during the World 2 fortress, after which Mitch spawns the first card
Card match games pop up once a player reaches certain point values, and all they do is slow down the run unless they're carefully managed to be avoidable by the other player.
To avoid spawning a coin ship
N-cards and bonus ships appear based on your point total. If you don't do it right the bonus stages appear in your path and you lose time taking them.
Because at specific point values it summons the card game and they don't want to do the card game because they don't need the power-ups, so it basically just adds time to the run. There's a chance that the card game won't spawn in front of them so they don't have to play it, but if it does spawn in their path they have to play it to get through it.
Twisty castle used to be my favorite level in the game. now i find out it's not even a level. rekt
Why did the points matter so much in the run?
Every 80,000 points, the N card appears on the overworld map.

If your score is a certain amount you’ll spawn a coin ship, which they don’t want.
They don't want to transform the hammer bros into coin ships which are long auto-scrolling levels with lots of coins. It has something to do with number of coins, score, and also the world they are in. Im not sure about the specific combination though.
