I love this swap off coop kinda vibe. Both personally involved and invested, skilled and knowledgable, feed off of each others successes and good vibes. Not compatible with most coop games, but a lovely setup for SMB3.
still one of the most memorable dramatic moments in a gdq for me. i actually went back and watched all the moments after he mentioned it. the height of sportsmanship, friendship and performance.
1:06:37 He's right, I loved that, what a difficult stage and with the hammer suit! So much at risk here for a fast Bowser fight and they execute this stage beautifully. I could NEVER do that. Well done!
I grew up in these times and looking back and just breezing threw the game doesn’t really give it justice , in 1991 when u discovered the hammer broke the rock in world 2 and opened up that secret area , that was amazing , it really was and I remember how amazed I was watching my big bros discover it , we live in a time where everything is figured out and the beauty of those early games , which is very hard to capture , is when they came out , the video game creators made these secrets , and the world at that time wasn’t connected by the internet and they were truely secrets and when u figured them out it was something really special
The early days of video games before the internet was the golden age of video games where u , and u alone and maybe some friends had to figure out the secrets the video game creators coded , u couldn’t just go online and figure it out , this is early 90s talk , then we all got dial up and cheat cc came along , the earliest to my knowledge way too cheat the video game and it was all down hill since
I grew up in the early nineties and me and my few older bros played Nintendo and when someone figured out something like using the hammer in the corner of world two , it was breath taking to my 5 year old mind , it was amazing
I remmeber when I played this as a kid and world 8 was SO HARD! So I used to go to world 4 2-3 times to fight the hammer bros and stock up on clouds and p wings.
Super entertaining run to watch, thank you! Mad skills obviously, and I like how this format allows the runners to catch their breath between levels too. What’s the story behind the uppercase and lowercase ”H” in the earlier levels, by the way? I saw them but didn’t understand their significance.
Huh. I didn't know that the N-Spade bonus only tripped once at each 80k in 2p games. Nor did I know that it could only be triggered once per world. Odd note about that, though, is that if you get enough points in one level for multiple Spades, it triggers them ALL on the same space and you get stuck going through them sequentially if you enter it.
During a SMB3 race during SGDQ 2018, Mitch accidently bumped his NES causing it to crash not once but twice. The first time it happened his opponent allowed Mitch to catch up but it happened again near the end of the race. Both runners were in good spirits though, so it was all good
During a gdq race between Mitch and Grandpoo, towards the end of world 8, Poo accidentally kicked the toe into Mitch's reset button. Poo got sooo embarrassed, but Mitch just ran through it all really quickly, and caught up, while Poo waited, and then they did the final part of the race
If you hadn't gotten an answer before, at a previous event GrandPooBear died during an All Forts race and stomped his feet and jarred Mitch's console, causing it to lock up. Later, GPB died again and accidently kicked the console Mitch was on and turned it off while they were both in world 8 and Mitch was right on his heels. th-cam.com/video/APl7Wk8Nx00/w-d-xo.html around 19 minute mark and the 57 minute mark.
It's what the n-card game spawn is attached to. We do a pretty in-depth explanation during the World 2 fortress, after which Mitch spawns the first card
They don't want to transform the hammer bros into coin ships which are long auto-scrolling levels with lots of coins. It has something to do with number of coins, score, and also the world they are in. Im not sure about the specific combination though.

Card match games pop up once a player reaches certain point values, and all they do is slow down the run unless they're carefully managed to be avoidable by the other player.
Because at specific point values it summons the card game and they don't want to do the card game because they don't need the power-ups, so it basically just adds time to the run. There's a chance that the card game won't spawn in front of them so they don't have to play it, but if it does spawn in their path they have to play it to get through it.

Old school multiplayer
Wow, great to see some different categories in this GDQ.
That's actually the second time this category is used ;) There was a similar run 1 year or 2 ago.
Cool to see a run with so much changing strategy being discussed on the fly.
One of the most entertaining shows of the whole GDQ! Hilarious interplay between all of you. Great job!
I hard a hard time believing I wasn't watching a TAS in some of these sections. Such a fun run, well played!
"Hey Mitch, make sure Haxor doesn't bomb that console" jeez, that's a throwback. I still feel bad for GPB ^^"
Do you have a link to that video? I haven't seen that
still one of the most memorable dramatic moments in a gdq for me. i actually went back and watched all the moments after he mentioned it. the height of sportsmanship, friendship and performance.
Now we need an all forts co-op race. The hottest category, made even spicer.
Was that co-op? Or was there an even bigger incident for their co-op run I shouldn’t spoil?
So nice to see multiple people in the same room for gdq again, lol. Love you two supporting each other. Also, love when Sky is hosting
I don't think Mitch can have an appearance at a GDQ event ever again without at least one reference to the infamous Poo Stomp.
I so agree with that donation around 2:50 .. this event has had so many sick runs
Got this game as a kid on my birthday from my aunt. I'll cherish it always and the life runs give it.
I really like how Mitch brings the enthusiasm and Hax is on top of the strategies.
love the chemistry between these two and sky
Working at a Wendy's and hearing them mention the "Baconator Wendy" gave me a fucking heart attack
Really enjoyed this run!

That was awesome 🔥 Loved all the details you shared about the game, I never knew you could just go into the hand levels in W8!
Two amazingly talented and entertaining runners!
Where's my Poo Whomp stomp?! I came here for a Poo Whomp stomp.
I'm a simple man, I see Mitch & Haxor playing SMB3 together and I press 'like'

Gratz on WR Mitch!
me: "oh neat, did they put an homage to the spiral minaret in mario 3?"
mitch: t w i s t y c a s t l e
Admitting Mitch got me on world 6 boss
I STILL fell for it
28:35 is the time where the category switches from "100% co-op" to "100% bro-op"
Mitch is so enthusiastic i love it!
This run had some great energy, hope to see you guys again!
Man I just hope next year we can have these events live again. Stupid covid.
Hammer suit kill was so swag! :D
Fuck yeah, Mitch and Haxor!
I remmeber when I played this as a kid and world 8 was SO HARD! So I used to go to world 4 2-3 times to fight the hammer bros and stock up on clouds and p wings.
That flower was on brand meta at its finest
Wasn't this the first time we've ever seen a hammer bros clear of SMB3 at a GDQ?
such a good run, the only disappointment was having to imagine the crowd reaction. gg you two, thanks for the fantastic run and commentary!
Great game, great run, great players, great commentator!
Mitch has done more for this game than anyone ever by discovering subpixel manipulations and hammer bro manipulation
Mitch and Haxor would make a great Mario and Luigi in real life
Great run, congrats guys
15:46 jumping in time with the music
Gonna say, my butt clenched a couple of times during the run.
it wouldnt be GDQ without sky!!
56:11 they had us in the first half ngl
Clearly Mario can make moldy donuts because he is a fungi
I don't know why I expected 2 people 1 controller? This was pretty cool too though
I didn't know the hammer suit can kill Mr mean face and the ghost
Super entertaining run to watch, thank you! Mad skills obviously, and I like how this format allows the runners to catch their breath between levels too.

in my kid memory ... the levels in MB3 where... a lot longer xD

I'm surprised 100% doesn't include "all the bonus coin ships you get from autoscrollers"
The hammer bros turn into them, and the coin ships are slower by like a minute each. Though I would watch an all coin ship run...
My fav airship 55:41
Today, I learned the music box puts roaming enemies to sleep. How about that?
WAIT WHAT
I didn't know there was a VS mode on the START-position D:
What's the infamous console bump?
During a SMB3 race during SGDQ 2018, Mitch accidently bumped his NES causing it to crash not once but twice. The first time it happened his opponent allowed Mitch to catch up but it happened again near the end of the race. Both runners were in good spirits though, so it was all good
During a GDQ Grand Poobear bumped the console with his foot that Mitch was playing on and it cut off.
GrandPooBear stomped his foot at GDQ during a run, and it made the NES reset.
Mitch raced grand poo bear at a gdq and stomped the floor, freezing mitch's console
28:37 co-op becomes bro-op
Hands up if spade card needs an update
Why?
does anyone have a link to the "console bump" referenced? I don't know the history there.
If you hadn't gotten an answer before, at a previous event GrandPooBear died during an All Forts race and stomped his feet and jarred Mitch's console, causing it to lock up. Has anyone ever seen Mitch and Grandpoobear in the same place? 🤷🏿
They did a hilarious 100% co-op at another SGDQ/AGDQ after the incident
Wow!
h hype and H hype
Twisty castle used to be my favorite level in the game. now i find out it's not even a level. rekt
Poo Stomp
Why are they worried about their scores? Did they explain that?
GG!
1:08:55 I guessed "the inter-FISH-un." Ah, well.
Why does the score matter?
It's what the n-card game spawn is attached to. We do a pretty in-depth explanation during the World 2 fortress, after which Mitch spawns the first card
If your score is a certain amount you’ll spawn a coin ship, which they don’t want.
They don't want to transform the hammer bros into coin ships which are long auto-scrolling levels with lots of coins. It has something to do with number of coins, score, and also the world they are in. Im not sure about the specific combination though.
Also the N spade
Why do they need to manage points?
It's what the n-card game spawn is attached to. We do a pretty in-depth explanation during the World 2 fortress, after which Mitch spawns the first card
Card match games pop up once a player reaches certain point values, and all they do is slow down the run unless they're carefully managed to be avoidable by the other player.
To avoid spawning a coin ship
N-cards and bonus ships appear based on your point total. If you don't do it right the bonus stages appear in your path and you lose time taking them.
Because at specific point values it summons the card game and they don't want to do the card game because they don't need the power-ups, so it basically just adds time to the run. There's a chance that the card game won't spawn in front of them so they don't have to play it, but if it does spawn in their path they have to play it to get through it.
Why did the points matter so much in the run?
Every 80,000 points, the N card appears on the overworld map.
