This song is so BRUTAL!!! It's not the song you could introduce someone to Gojira with, it's too overwhelming to the unfamiliar ear, but once you've come to enjoy and appreciate the grooves and complexity of Gojira this song will blow your mind and become a guaranteed favorite.
It's better to introduce Gojira with this one, than with the Heaviest matter of the universe at least :) However, definitely agree with your long time comment
The first time I heard a Gojira song I actually didn't "get it". It was Flying Whales. Because it has an odd riff (short-long-short-long) I couldn't catch a groove. It was through loving Meshuggah that I came to understand Gojira, because with them rhythms are supposed to be odd. Once I "got it" and listened to The Art Of Dying for the first time, I couldn't believe I hadn't heard it before. I thought it was an absolute masterpiece and one of the heaviest songs I've ever heard to date.
@Big Homie Steve The Metal Head i have seen it. Hes probably the best at doing the cover of it. Well that ive seen so far. As for if I can play them,I can try my ass off and I still probably couldn't tbh. I have tried the art of dying. The speed is hard. The double bass he does is so insane. His timing is just 🤯
Gojira opened for Deftones last month in Cincinnati, blown away. First time hearing them and after that night I listen to them daily. Honestly one of my favorite live performances
Mario only played in Gojira , he went to a jazz school and joined his brother's band when he was 16 ( his brother being Joe the singer and lead guitarist).the line up of this band never changed !!!
I think this song and album proves that Mario is probably one of the best drummers of this generation of metal. Just the off time alone is nuts as fuck. I love the Rev as he made me want to play drums but Mario plays a completely different style so it’s hard to discern.
Gojira "Where Dragons Dwell live Hellfest 2013" one of the best performances of Mario and Gojira for me is one of the best performances in the history of modern metal
Yeah, its actually two patterns, repeating one after another, both are made using groups of 5s and 3s, the second pattern has one group of 3s less. And all of it is played over constant 4/4 beat on ride cymbal. That creates the overall polyrythmic pattern that you can write as 45/4 pattern. If your head cant process those groups of 5s and 3s being played alongside 4/4 (mine struggles a lot to even count/tap that) you wont be able to play it at all. Bleed or Clockworks are kinda symbols of technical and extremely difficult drumming, but for me Art of dying is even a level above them in terms of difficulty
Exactly, no discredit to the rev, an amazing drummer, but Mario is on another level compared to almost every metal drummer, in terms of drumming ability it’s not even a question who is better.
Facts even tho I’m a bigger fan of the rev because of insane fantastic songwriting and overall musicianship, guy was like a great composer. Mario forsure the better and more talented drummer but the thing that made Rev special was his songwriting ability.
I honestly never really heard of these guys til y'all played them! I love this band! They are so heavy! I love it!!!❤ THANKS guys!!!❤🤓 Loved your headbanging! Lol
Good morning from snowy New England...Yes, what a way to start my day!!! Mario redefined double bass and syncopation..He and his brother Joe are the James Hetfield and Lars of this era..I saw GOJIRA back in August 2021 and once again they slayed!!! This entire show is killer, one of their best!!! Peace from the Northeast...
I saw them live at the Armory in Minneapolis opening for Deftones. I was there for Deftones, but Gojira absolute brought that place to its knees. It sounded like I had headphones on and I've never quite seen a live performance that good in my entire life. 100% accurate to the album recordings.
Make sure to check out the studio version of this as well, as this live performance does really well to show off the drums but not so much the vocals, and in the studio version Joe's vocals are outstanding. Not knocking on his performance here it's just the tones and things that he chooses to use live are a bit different then on the studio version and personally I think the studio version is the best way to hear this song. Also it's worth noting that Joe cut out a full passage of lyrics at the opening of this performance, starting with the line "neglected emotions leading to catastrophic voyage on the other side."
Just goes to show that if you know music on any level, regardless of what music you like, everyone always appreciates bands with this much talent and dedication. Rappers, Jazz Artists, Opera singers you name it they react to Gojira and there’s never a bad word said
Mario and Joe are brothers. Mario had a band in school at age 13 prior to Gojira he was very young when they began. He began playing in Gojira (then named Godzilla) with his brother Joe at age 14. Joe was 19.. so yeah.. he's been doing this his entire life really.
Definitely great band Smokey and Barringer you will love this and it seems like you do already yeah just continue to have a great year and looking forward to more and more content
Yes you can be a virtuioso drummer without beeing thought.. You need an ear for whats going on and can feel the rythms inside the music and develop them to your style of play. As i did , opened the door to our rehearsal and listened to the sounds from the area and started to play drums to those i heard. For instance there was a bird whisteling in a tree and i listened to its melody rythm and played drums to it. Stuff like that will develop you as a drummer.
This was the appropriate reaction. Try listening to Space Time or Love off their first album for some seriously groovy heaviness. Also bonus if you can sample the intro
Hey guys. I'm french drummer. To answer you, Mario always played with his brother. But the he learned drums in "Agostini school". We have this kind of school almost everywhere in France, and we learn JAZZ. Mario learned jazz before anything. Because he's clever and he knows that jazz open all the gates on the drums. The pattern in the beginning alternate 5/4, 6/4 and 4/4. 3 groups of 5, followed by 3 groups of 3, followed by 3 groups of 5, followed by 2 groups of 3.
The drums absolutely do follow a pattern, and it's pretty crazy when you consider he's also playing it against 4/4 and hitting the cymbals each beat; there's a video by youtuber Yogev Gabay that breaks down the drum patterns used over the first couple minutes.
I heard this song recently. Now I'm team Gojira for life. They are totally amazing. Every single song is epic. There isn't a dud on any of their albums. I LOVE Mario. He is a metal god. Joe's vocals in this just give me total chills. Gojira is life.
Wooooo, and he misses the first verse :D "Breathing slowly, mechanical heartbeat. Losing contact with the living. Almighty TV blood hybrid empty brain - don`t see anything real in the game. The tension is building constantly, no reason - just a reflex I have - driven by clockwork. I try to keep an eye open and I realize - I haven`t closed my eyes in a long time!". All in all, spirituality and nature, this band just loves. Don`t know if there is another round in the contest, but the one to really see Mario`s greatness would be Where dragons dwell live Hellfest 2013. Spoiler alert - 4 straight minutes on the double bass. It`s just picturesque. Vote Mario.
Long story short, Mario and the lead guitarist / singer are brothers and they found the band Godzilla in ‘96 with schoolfriends Christian on guitar and Jean Michel on bass. In 2001 they changed their name to Gojira for legal issues. Joe is 5 years older than Mario i think and listened a lot to Metallica, Mario wasn’t into music that much, more into sports and water activities as they lived near the Atlantic in Southern France. But Mario aged 14-15 i think suddenly understood the music Joe was listening to and became a fan as well of the genre, he drummed by himself around 1994-95 and than formed Godzilla with his brother Joe, Christian and Jean -Michel and he was hooked. He still praises Lars Ulrich a lot and considers him and Metallica as the biggest thing metal has seen. They love Metallica. Other drummers he praised and got influenced by i think were Abe Cunningham from Deftones and the drummer from sepultura. He never really mentions Danny Carey although they both are one my fav drummers around. Well, i tried to keep it short 😎
Speaking of Sepultura: funnily enough, they were also founded by two brothers, Igor and Max Cavalera, Igor was the drummer and Max was the lead singer/guitarist!
@@Tritoness ah ok, I haven't really followed up on them in a very long time, not since Max left (and I know Igor left later), so i don't really know anything about their current members.
I can do tattoos with both hands comfortably but im not 100% same dexterity but the only practice i had was signing my name left handed for a month which wasnt often lol
Love to you guys, for your permanent releases If you wanna react discover some great band, very atmospheric, but as not crazy drumming , I would highly recommend Solstafir. Djakninn, or Fjara ( go for the KEXP live version) would be nice tracks to start with. The band is from Iceland Going to see Gojira again, in France in a month, if hopefully it doesn't get canceled
The transition to death is the journey that this song expressed, absolutely amazing. Beautiful . Mario is the best drummer in the world. I love Gojira! Go Braves 2023!
Gojira hits on every musical want... Want something atmospheric, melodic, maybe even with a bit of folk influence? Plenty of songs for that. Want something groovy, that hits hard, with memorable riffs? Plenty of songs for that. Want something so fucking heavy that it transports your ears into a dizzying rush of blast beats, syncopated riffs and drums, and powerfully raw vocals? Mario is the lead vocalist (Joe’s) brother, they formed Gojira together. Mario was only around 15 years old when the original Godzilla version of the band was formed in 1996. He was 19 when their first studio album came out, the only other bands he was in before Gojira were pretty minor, and most of them were just side projects with Joe. Another great song that showcases his drumming is Esoteric Surgery, they haven’t played it live yet though.
Couldn't get my ass to the gym.... But now, better gonna ride on this pumped fell and get my ass to the Gym..certainly knows what starts my playlist today
hey guys, i will recommend you to see the remembrance performance on the link Alive by Gojira, it's amazing besides something that happens very rarely, Mario wearing a shirt.
The kick drum pattern in the intro is insane. It's in 21/16 time if I remember right. The pattern is something like this Kick, kick, kick, kick snare x3 Kick kick snare x 2
Mario is playing: xxxx_xxxx_xxxx_xx_xx_xx_ xxxx_xxxx_xxxx_xx_xx_ Every "x" is a hit and every "_" is a pause, and it repeats, and repeats, and repeats! I'll say: alternating time signatures 24/16 and 21/16 while maintaining a 4/4 beat is stuff of legend!!!

Brutality on his splend. Guys, I highly recommend you to listen to this song in their performance on "The Flesh Alive" 2009. And I recommend you to listen to the song "The way of all flesh" on the same show. You won't regret. That performance is insane. Cheers, loving the content!
Man! You guys finally did some gojira! Please do 'vacuity' next! Or one of the new albums songs: 'sphinx'... My favorite from the new album. If best drummer, danny and mario are definitely two amazing drummers.
If you guys wanna hear some more sick drumming I would check out some Archspire, crazy fast guitar and bass playing as well. Keep up the lit reactions dudes
Hey guys. Check out Phidias by Divine Ratio. I know y’all have gone through the whole Tool library, but this band has got some serious Tool vibes instrumentally. Good vocals too. Lots of heavy palm muted guitar riffs and the drummer plays in a similar style to Danny Carey.
i feel like I'm a minority here, but does anybody even know their song, "MY Last Creation" from, "L'enfant Savage"?! That has always been my favorite Gojira song and, in my opinion, shows mario at his best in the drumming.
This song is so BRUTAL!!! It's not the song you could introduce someone to Gojira with, it's too overwhelming to the unfamiliar ear, but once you've come to enjoy and appreciate the grooves and complexity of Gojira this song will blow your mind and become a guaranteed favorite.

I kind of agree, yet with me this is the song that finally clicked with me, love most of gojira now, but until I heard this i wasn't too into them

Ironic. That one really got me into gojira but I admit. I appreciate it much more now after 1000000 times listening to it.
As a drummer, I can say this is one of the harder songs to play. Mario is just so talented, in so many ways. Good reaction!

Opening for Deftones. It should be the other way around. Or better yet, just don't have the Deftones involved. Chino's "singing" is terrible anyways.
Mario only played in Gojira , he went to a jazz school and joined his brother's band when he was 16 ( his brother being Joe the singer and lead guitarist).the line up of this band never changed !!!
one of the mightiest songs ever written, you can't change my mind
Danny is the master! These are the students.
Mario formed Gojira with his brother Joe (the frontman), It's pretty dope that them brothers can do what they love together
The song after this one "Esoteric Surgery" is another beauty. Y'all should check it out as well!
So hard they never play it live . Bummer
This proves Mario is better. The polyrythyms are insane. Those snare hits sound random and off time on purpose which is way harder to do.
Yeah, its actually two patterns, repeating one after another, both are made using groups of 5s and 3s, the second pattern has one group of 3s less. I know the rev is gonna win because his band is more well known, but Mario's the better drummer, not a doubt in my mind.
Agreed 100%.
This discussion should never exist.
The Rev is good drummer, but Mario is a mutant, and probably the best modern drummer around.
Exactly, no discredit to the rev, an amazing drummer, but Mario is on another level compared to almost every metal drummer, in terms of drumming ability it’s not even a question who is better.

Mario and Danny Carey. My top 2 drummers on the planet right now.
No need to compare. Both amazing terrific drummers
Great song by Gojira, well all songs written by Gogira are awesome.
YES! Not gonna lie, Art of Dying is probably my favourite Gojira song. So happy you guys finally got to it.

Smokey: loving the “they live” t-shirt! Wish Rowdy had done more movies!
Mario is a Specimen indeed:-) Thank you for giving this band some TLC. Fine reaction!
Remembrance, the link alive you won't regret it!
If you ever get to see them live, do it. I did back in 2019 and it was an amazing show
His brother is the vocalist. They are both french. They are both literal musical gojiras.
well, not literal.
If you guys loved Mario's drumming in this one. You need to check out their live performance of Where Dragons Dwell. I think it was from Bloodstock.
They are killing it love it

Yes, you can be taught how to play the drums. Also, Mario Duplantier formed Gojira with his brother, who is the singer/guitarist, Joe Duplantier.
what a shame, I didn't know this song yet but it's absolutely awesome. The complexity of the drums alone is insane.
I heard this song recently. Now I'm team Gojira for life. They are totally amazing. Every single song is epic. There isn't a dud on any of their albums. I LOVE Mario. He is a metal god. Joe's vocals in this just give me total chills. Gojira is life.
Gojira goes so hard
Just saw them live again in October. I highly suggest you see them live. They are INCREDIBLE
Wait, hold up, have you watched the Morgan Agren and Fredrick Thorendal medley jam session? Morgan is a drummers drummer
Great reaction big dawgs! 🤘🏼🔥❤️🔥🔥🔥

If you wanna react discover some great band, very atmospheric, but as not crazy drumming , I would highly recommend Solstafir. Djakninn, or Fjara ( go for the KEXP live version) would be nice tracks to start with. The band is from Iceland
Going to see Gojira again, in France in a month, if hopefully it doesn't get canceled
Sólstafir eru bestir. Djákninn er í uppáhaldi hjá mér.
Hard one as I love Mario but got a lot of respect for The Rev. What a song this is though 🤟
Plenty of songs for that from Gojira's catalog.
Neil Peart (pretty much the godfather of prog rock drumming) once said playing Rush music was "like trying to do calculus while running a marathon"

You can’t even see his feet back there and you know they are God mode

Can I grovel in the early comments and ask for some more cypress hill and bloodhound gang?

This sends chills.. Brutal.. Try Opeth, A Fair Judgement 👍
I’m fairly certain Joey Jordison (Ex Slipknot [RIP]) was self taught.
Great song to start the morning with! Sure gets you pumping! 🥁🔥
Both write your guesses down and dont open each others till the announcement for the winner. Could be fun?
Y'all should read the lyrics to this song they're very powerful
Yes French. They did the first couple albums in their garage.

Gojira and Orbit culture have the sickest drops in metal Ive ever heard
hey guys, i will recommend you to see the remembrance performance on the link Alive by Gojira, it's amazing besides something that happens very rarely, Mario wearing a shirt.
The kick drum pattern in the intro is insane. It's in 21/16 time if I remember right. The pattern is something like this
Kick, kick, kick, kick snare x3
Kick kick snare x 2
Mario and Vinnie Paul both played with gloves because they hit the drums so fucking hard and fast they'd probably lose grip with sweat
I love this song, and it's an insane experience live. But you really have to hear the album cut for the first time before live(imho)
Mario is playing:
xxxx_xxxx_xxxx_xx_xx_xx_
xxxx_xxxx_xxxx_xx_xx_
Every "x" is a hit and every "_" is a pause, and it repeats, and repeats, and repeats!
I'll say: alternating time signatures 24/16 and 21/16 while maintaining a 4/4 beat is stuff of legend!!!
