I'm Danish. I've learned must of my English at the university of life.
I've got a few tips to improve.
    Listen to audio books.
Listen to grammar lessons on TH-cam.
Read aloud every day and speak as much as possible even to yourself.
Pick your accent -British or American
My best mate is an English x-pat, who speaks Danish, but we do "walk & talks" in English.
Take English lessons. I'm attending an English conversation class. I get by in English, but you can always improve.😉
Best of luck to all of you.

Great video once again. I subscribe to your channel because I plan on teaching English and one of the accents I want to teach is RP (the others are US accents). I am also actively learning Portuguese. One reason is so I can sing it. I love Brazilian music! Portuguese also has many similarities to Spanish which I already speak. But for reasons you described in this video I get bogged down sometimes. Thank you very much for these ideas. By the way, you and Berwyn are GREAT!!! These videos are so much fun! Keep up the good work and good luck to both of you!

Hi Laura...new here and happy to have found a good British English teacher who can help me. All good tips and true why's, I can clearly see me in them. I've been studying English for a while now and when you discover or find yourself emm not so good at speaking while you are on the other pillars of languages, I have spent too much time on writing, grammar, it's....sad, let's say.
I thought a thing, may the role game be useful in order to have that click in myself and start being comfortable speaking English, please?
I mean, interpreting some short dialogues with an audio to imitate, for instance.
Thank you again, I like your content very much...cheers from Italy! 😊🙏

You don't need to memorize many way of expressions in one situation, just one pattern is ok, because language is for communication not showing your knowledge. Besides, if you keep reading, you will memorize many ways of phrase subconsciously.
Learning phrases from listening is ideal, but we can't even understand it, so it's not so effective way to expand your vocabulary. And nobody do just reading forever and not try to speak. By reading you will get to know many phrases and be confident, then you will be comfortable to speak. Many non English
speakers who live in the UK don't improve their English even though they have conversation every day, because they just speak not read. It will take more time to learn phrases by repeating. Besides it's boring. Reading is fun and effective.
You don't need to record your English, because you don't know how native speakers express. It's way better to ask your tutors your mistakes.

I learned English 16 years ago when I was 15 or 16 and it wad the best decision ever since it allowed me to have several well paid jobs where I live and I think learning is a never-ending process, so for those who still struggle with the language, just keep on practicing and switch your phone or your social media content to your target language and you'll get better at it with time, give yourself the motivation you need to do it and you'll see the results

It seems to me (and I know this might sound ... controversial) that many native speakers actually avoid talking with people with accents (the thicker the worst).
The reasons why that might be so ....
Perhaps some natives find it hard understanding non-natives or find it bothersome having to change their speaking pattern so that the non-native might stand a better chance at understanding what they (the natives) are saying.
Perhaps some natives are not used to speaking with non-natives and feel anxious about it.
Perhaps some natives believe that non-natives might ask too many questions and they have no intention of providing them with free English lessons (rude? practical? just a choice among many others? I have no idea).
Perhaps some natives find it a lot easier and quicker speaking with a fellow native speaker (birds of the same feather ... anyone?).
I don't know what the main reason is.
Yet I've bumped into some research indicating that our mirror neurons (the neurons in our brains that makes us kind of unconsciously emulate or imitate the way the person we're talking with... talks) actually might produce a very weird phenomenon : when natives talk to non-natives (in English , obviously) ..... non-natives' accents tend to soften a bit while ..... natives tend to add a bit of an accent to the way they speak.
Mirror neurons going both ways, anyone?
    Peace.
