I was lucky enough to see the Mona Lisa in person. Not overated. I was getting sucked in. After a couple minutes I snapped out of it and looked at the peoples reactions around me. But all these sad humans around me were turned around taking selfies of themselves with her in the background not even looking at her. Incredible. Maybe NFT is the future?
What does that last sentence have to do with the fact that people are taking selfies? People would scroll through NFTs faster than they walk across paintings.

Excellent video. It made me feel like I got an insider view of the clash of nft art & established art. I think the element that fits both sides is the understanding that the incentive system of how we value & perceive art is about to get a shakeup. There will be winners & losers but in the end art will win as it always does & the best & purest representation of the potential of NFT art will be realized. & The road will go on.
So much here. The one thing I will say that I feel strongest about is the humanity in physical art. The animated bull painting is a good example of how to not express that experience in digital art. In an nft I would argue there are ways of expressing the humanity of physical art. I have been thinking about the potential of augmented expressions of physicality in digital images and video for 20 years. I see the nft as a way of making it available. The nft can be anything, digital art can be anything. The animation of the bull is an afterthought easily achieved in After Effects, a gimmicky move and one that will date poorly. The statements that will be important in nft's in the long run will not be the gimmicks.

Thank you so much for putting this 32min piece together and making it so it reached me here .. in my home ... such a treat and when it ended I immediately felt my trajectory pivot .... Decentralized but environmentally harmful isn't progress in my books.

I dont see the problem with selling art and NFT's Im an artist I have been drawing, painting and spraying up the streets since I was a kid and now in my 30's. Ive been involved in a few showings and a couple of mural festivals, Ive made very little money from it but I continue to do it as it keeps me sane and makes me feel whole. So if there's a way of selling digital art with NFT's then I am all for it. With physical art, I have mostly just given it away as people dont tend to buy it that much, especially now during COVID. We all have to make a living, so what makes it less "art" if someone has been struggling to survive off of it for many years and now has found the potential to sell art via NFT's and be profitable?
It's not really something that's needed in society like Plumbing carpentry engineering Etc. There's functional art like landscaping or house design but what you're talkin about is just done by millions or billions of people for fun on the side.
I have always felt like the "what is art, really....like....but, really?" debate can be physically duplicated through the act of sitting in a car with someone, rolling up all the windows and having a "who's fart smells worse?" debate. I'm gonna pass on that one my dudes... Think. Create. Be Kind. Be Humble. Encourage.
For Americans and Europeans its is controversial. For us in Africa this is a mountainous opportunity to make money off art and break the barriers. African art rarely makes it to big gallleries in countries with bigger economies. So we do more digital art and this does put a smile on our faces.
I think the concept of NFTs are interesting, but at the moment I can't help but agree with Simon, ultimately, something tangible in the physical reality is going to be more appealing, because it appeals to our natural senses in ways that digital objects won't ever have in its current iteration. This is why even though everything can be purchased online, certain traditional markets still have people browsing and purchasing even on the basis of leisure.. because it appeals to the senses, in a raw way. Anyway, I'm not saying it won't be amazing eventually, but it has a long way to go.
I think Simon Wan was smarter to take the original Bull Painting. He can hang it on the wall and it is quite a cool looking work of art. It's got a handsome appeal to it. The digital versions in the long run will be boring because who wants to open it up on their desk top or phone screen and watch a digital version of it go through some fancy, schmancy, hoopala movement of it coming apart and going back together over and over ? Not me. Maybe watch it once or twice but it would get boring. When it's on your wall is a different story. It decorates a person's surroundings and gives a nice feel to the place. Almost like there's a friendly pet in the room. Plus every time you look at it you're bound to see something a little new or different each time. Good art does that to people. Besides, it's a good conversation piece when friends visit. I'm not discounting NFT's as art, though I haven't seen too many, of what I would call powerful art pieces being made yet. But NFT's are less about Art and more about value than anything else. They're kind of like the old Baseball trading cards that kids used to get in Double Bubble chewing gum packets. At the time only the kids traded them with each other. Now the original cards are high in value because they're collectors items. But who really takes them out to look at them ? Nobody. Why? Because they can't give a reward back like a painting on the wall can do. They can't change the atmosphere of a room. NFT's are the same way. So it's really a market thing more than an art thing. But there is nothing wrong with saying they can be a ''Form of Art '' I've been doing artworks for over 50 years, painting and sculpting, but I'm openminded enough to see what comes of it, and I'm going to throw some NFT's together from the digital prints of my paintings on my art website.

I had a chat with a mate about if the MonaLisa showcased in Paris is really the real one. At least NFT offers us the authenticity of the artwork/asset
What does that last sentence have to do with the fact that people are taking selfies? People would scroll through NFTs faster than they walk across paintings.

"Art is only worth what someone's willing to pay for it" is simply a statement about VALUE.
you can replace "art" with ANYTHING
Exactly.. Art worth is something that goes beyond monetary value but in economical terms he is just referring about value not overall art worth.
Defining value is never simple however. No consensus ever is.
Art contains emotion. Ask banksy
Absolutely beautiful, you did an amazing job and so glad you put that quote from Warhol at the end. (Honestly made me tear up)
