So myself (and the algorithm) are loving all the Um Actually comments but I do want to make something clear.
I know that you can grapple onto the Ogre to save yourself when he throws you, but I don't believe that makes him as an enemy THAT much better. My points still stand. This is still very very early in the game and remember - the purpose of these videos is to assess how a "noob" responds to early-game FromSoftware design. The difficulty curve between the rest of the opening and the Chained Ogre is the biggest jump BY FAR in any modern FromSoftware opening, and I believe that jump is too big. An early-game boss which can one-hit-kill you (in three different ways) ain't a good tutorial boss.
Sekiro is still a great game. I LIKE SEKIRO. A LOT. But it's the most difficult learning curve of the three games she's played and I think that says something.
Big love for the "engagement." For real, you all rock and I appreciate you being here.

I'm glad you broke the rule of not getting involved to help her. It shouldn't be constant, as that would defeat the purpose, but FromSoftware games are really inscrutable and can at times require a level of exploration that borders on absurd to obtain vital items. Occasionally jumping in to give her a bit of guidance doesn't bother me at all.

    • @Hoopla10
      @Hoopla10 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@jimit.4220 It's easy after you know the game but it doesn't negate that Monty is right, that it's BS and isn't really in keeping with 99% of the games combat philosophy. The mini-boss on the other side of the fog wall behind the Ogre is a much better skill check boss for how the game seemingly wants us to play and yet that's optional. But even that's a problem in terms of design because FromSoft has given the player agency and mechanics to use other forms traversal and strategy of navigating the world. So she decided to use a lot of stealth but that is counter-productive when it's required to learn to fight a specific way to literally progress. That's a definite mistake by FromSoft. I love Sekiro and its combat is pure bliss for me but there's definite design choices I think are messy and confusing for lots of players. From's other games do a much better job signaling its design philosophy to the player and then remaining consistent in that philosophy.

I didn't realize it but in my first playthrough, when you get the bell and are able to go back in time, I went through that whole sequence completely. So my very first boss wasn't the ogre but Lady Butterfly and the drunk before her. I think that might be why Sekiro ended up "clicking" for me so much faster and why I absolutely adore it. Lady Butterfly is hard but teaches you far better the typical fight of Sekiro and helps you learn to interweave the shinobi skills with your attacks to great effect. I wonder if she wouldn't have been so frustrated if she went that route instead first. The ogre is a little less frustrating if you have already had an entire levels worth of experience under your belt.

And it was never "Damn they're so hard, I can't do this" and I had so many of thoose moments in DS, etc. B4 that well it took me several attempts and a ~40min fight to beat butterfly in my first playthrough, on NG+ not even 5min.
Most of the moves you accquire feel not good/ worth using
Dragon rot sounds scary, but at least I didn't die a lot afterwards, cuz I trained my parrying with the guy at the starring area

Literally stuck on the last boss (sword saint) for about two weeks, didn’t give up but god damn Sekiro can really kick the fight out of you and you have to keep trying with pure blinding persistence and you will reap your reward; your hands will shake, your heart will leap and your voice will roar!

But there is no reward? You just need to do it again and again in Sekiro? No items, no levels, no new weapons? You're just stuck on an endless parry simulator and the only thing that can get you through is getting lucky enough to parry every single enemy attack.

    • @user-tu2dr3ny6x
      @user-tu2dr3ny6x 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@JakeNukem3D You gain health for every 4 prayer beads you collect, and every boss allows you to increase attack power. You also can unlock new techniques, and you've got a lot of prosthetic tools. Firecrackers that can stun massive bosses, the mist raven for dodging, a huge metal hat for blocking, short katana to combo with your main katana, an axe, a spear, shurikens, and a whistle that I never bothered to use. Plus there's some new techniques you can learn, but unfortunately you can only have one equipped at a time, but they're all very useful in their own way.
Sekiro definitely doesn't allow you to get as creative with your character, but you gotta remember that the good thing is that you don't have to worry about ruining your character accidentally. I had to restart Dark Souls after I made it to Anor Londo because I had destroyed my character with poor leveling and weapon upgrade decisions. It was pure luck that I didn't have the same issue in Demon's Souls way back when it came out. All you need in Sekiro is sharp reflexes, and the ability to memorize your opponents attacks. It's ultimately far more satisfying because you HAVE to use skill to win, you can't bust out crystal soulspear and blast through a boss, and you can't summon other players to walk you through the whole area and crush the boss for you.

One thing i only noticed in this video is how the game sets up some similar enemys before bossfights - like the small ogre before the chained ogre or the minibossfight before genichiros first encounter, that will refine a specific skill (ogre =dodging, before genichiro = parrying really fast). Never actively thought about that in my own playtrough.

I think not guiding her or explaining things hampered her enjoyment considerably. It may have been more crucial for this game than the others. In general, though, I think letting her figure everything out on her own just makes these hard games even harder than they need to be.
Maybe some time in the future have her revisit this, but help her understand that she needs to read the tutorial boxes (which, like you, I appreciate popping up during gameplay since Fromsoft games can be relatively vague), and if she plays in a way that hampers her progression at "gitting gud" then encourage her to engage the enemies more or outright tell her that if she ignores smaller challenges that are designed to help her hone her skills she'll have an incredibly difficult time dealing with major hurdles on her journey.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. While I can see one positive effect by being idle and not help her, I think this passive approach is a bit stupid really in the context of these videos, especially giving the obvious fact that your girlfriend did not understand how to properly play the game. And I’m not talking about the execution of the moves, I’m talking about the mechanics and understanding what they are and what they imply. Maybe the game wouldn't become so frustrating or almost an exercise in futility if you focus on, instead of execution of moves, on the way you approach the fight overall.
Sekiro, by contrast to other from games, does prefer a more singular combat style, which can eventually be very much expended upon by the inclusion of the prosthetic. But until then, you have to understand the basics and be able to apply them.
From what I saw, besides hitting the sword and the occasional parry, every fight was almost randomly approached, jumped and dodged randomly, even the 40th time. Which lead to, guess what, failing that fight for the 40th time.
Perhaps your role should better be to get her to understand the rules, the ones that really matter, like game mechanics. Not how well was a wrong move executed.
As a note, the ogre’s moves are not that wonky as it may appear. His grab attack where he’s jumping forwards is not a grab attack at all, it’s a sweep attack, which must be jumped over. His close grab can be easily dodged if you’re not already hitting him greedily when he does the move.,And while I can see someone making the argument that visually it doesn't appear that way, if dodging it doesn't seem to help, perhaps try something else? Why do the same thing dozens of times even though it clearly doesn't work?
I like the idea of this series, but I think that videos like this should be only the first step. A second step would be to make your gf understand what exactly she could improve, and try her to improve just those things, nothing else. For example, she didn't really lose the ogre fight 40 times, what she did was she got hit hundred of times in the exact same ways. So maybe, instead of focusing on winning the fight, maybe teach her to focus on not getting hit, on trying different evasion tactics, of animation timing etc. Things that might not be obvious to non gaming folk. Because if she understands all that, than maybe she wont feel so overwhelmed by it all.

Holy fuck finally someone else says it. I understand not wanting to backseat game but as this dude above said. Paraphrasing "Its not about the execution its about understanding the underlying mechanics and more importantly what they imply".
Intentionally letting her brush off every single tutorial pop up felt like she was set up for failure. A simple 30 second rereading the tutorial popup and then a discussion with you about "hey why is the game telling you this, this is how this explanation applies to the game".
This lack of effort put into trying to understand game mechanics, on top of the fact that you don't correct her when she incorrectly assumes other mechanics, such as making noise in the grass, or that jumping back is the best way to dodge feels like she is just being put on display, like "look here, watch this completely new player get frustrated!" which obviously is supposed to be the point, but more in a mean spirited kind of way, she isn't being frustrated because she can't beat the game through her own skill (imo the best kind of frustration), she is being frustrated because she refuses to engage with the mechanics, seemingly isn't allowed to ask for help or which mechanics even matter and is set up for failure.
Also maybe set some expectations before you have her start the game? She wasn't told that Sekiro is a single guy and you only get to play as him with just his weapon. That seems like a pretty big oversight for the expectations between games. Anyone who buys Sekiro with the intention of playing it (yes even noobs like your wife) would have looked at the game once or twice before purchasing it and learned at least that much.
I get new players especially will try to engage with the game in ways that obviously wouldn't work and will be punished for it. Sekiro has one main way to play, even if you can get creative as fuck through all of the weapon arts, timings, prosthetics and movement, you still HAVE to play it in one main style when you get to the bosses, fighting 1 on 1 blocking, striking, dodging but most importantly PARRYING.
If you are going to continue this series please take a look back on it and maybe change some of the rules so that it is an enjoyable experience for your wife. I want to watch a new player learn, grow and improve, slowly coming to understand and appreciate any given games mechanics (assuming its a well made game), not slam their head against a wall (ogre) 40 times in a row because the first time they tried it they accidently chipped off a bit of paint and assumed it worked.
That might be a crude metaphor and I don't want to imply that she is stupid, because she clearly isn't. But you put her in the room, said "knock down that wall", shut the door and then left. She didn't know she was allowed to leave the room, get a sledgehammer and then come back. The new player experience should be learning how to use the sledgehammer, not breaking down a wall without one.

I’ve been a bit wracked by resurfacing long-term COVID effects, so yesterday I went down a TH-cam rabbit-hole. I found your Noobus Humanus series and, being a massive fan of FromSoftware games, decided to give them a watch.
Firstly I’ll say that I love these videos. Both your girlfriend and yourself are absolute riots, and watching her play is a lot of fun. What I also really appreciate though is your thorough examination of the gameplay! It was great, and afterwards I watched the Q&A video, curious as to when your next video like this would be.
Funnily enough, I was surprised to see this one uploaded today, and again it was a blast to watch. I know though that this isn’t the bulk of your content, so I went to watch some more of your critiques, and man, such great content here! I especially love your Hollow Knight critique- one of my all-time favorite games.
If anything, you’ve earned a new sub. I was surprised to see that this channel was still relatively new and upcoming- the amount of care and effort you put into these videos is top tier professional. Keep up the excellent work and I’m eager to see where this goes!
Oh, and good luck with the move. :D

On the tutorial pop-ups, I have to say they the worst part of Sekiro. by a mile. Not only are they intrusive and flow breaking, they CANNOT BE TURNED OFF! this was clearly something that fromsoft were told to do by activation because they thought the game was ''too confusing'' and it sucks so much. it makes me want to have the option of just skipping the opening and going straight to the sculptor. what's more, it happens at the worst times, namely in the middle of combat where the last thing you want to do is read something. they could have at least had them pop up after you die the first time, so then it's a learning experience, not just an annoyance. great vid btw. DS3 will be a blast to watch I'm sure.

@@Rassalcon Yeah but it's a few seconds and it will make you better understand the game and the importance of certain mechanics. It literally isn't a nuisance at all because whatever was happening before will still happen just as soon as you finish reading. It takes maybe a total of 1 minute out of the game for ALL of the tutorials to be read. It literally happens before the combat actually starts, telling you something that will undoubtedly make the right easier, not harder.

@@henrikfitch4017 I see your point. but everything you've said is why I don't like it. learning tools are only as good as their presentation and THAT is what sucks. it's not a problem of time wasted, it's a problem of momentum and control. it's like driving a car at 60mph and having wall appear in front of you, forcing you to crash into it, and then vanishing and speeding your car back up to 60. it's jarring, and more importantly, avoidable.

@@Rassalcon If a tutorial popup is "worst part of Sekiro. by a mile." then you don't have any legitimate complaints about the game. It gives the player important knowledge of the core mechanics that you will need for the entire game. It's there to make sure the less than optimally bright players recognize it and uses it. I still hadn't properly figured out the game mechanics by the time I found LSL, and the really confined space you fight him in kept making me get stuck or be unable to see. Eventually I mastered the game and now the ninja/longswordsman enemy types are my absolute favorite to go against. Hitting every perfect deflect on one of their combos is the best feeling.
