Thank you very much for this video, after getting all 4 endings to this game, I now realized, years later that there is a sakura bull miniboss in fountainhead palace, wich means, obviously, that I gotta get another run. Thank you lots!
Sekiro’s combat, setting, lore, bosses and (most) mini-bosses make it my favorite fromsoft game (tied with bloodborne and DS3). That said I’ve always thought the game’s one weak point was the areas themselves. Of course there are exceptions but in a general manner they do feel either generic or plain not interesting at times. Though I don’t think lackluster area design is enough to ruin a game (hence it still being my favorite), if there is a sequel I’m hoping they improve on this aspect. Your video nailed it as always demod, honestly puts other overly done ranking content on youtube to shame, keep it up my man.
You're wrong, the areas are the strongest part of the game, what you are referring to as "weak area design" is in reality a more complex problem. And that is the clashing of the new gameplay and progression with the old fashioned From Software area design.Good areas, but not much reason to actually explore them.
Botond Kunos well I can’t possibly be wrong when I said “I’ve always thought...” as in PERSONALLY the areas aren’t very appealing to me. Also notice how I’m not talking about level design, I think the level design is very smart with cool verticality and good enemy placement. What I’m not crazy about are the environments themselves, I think you spend way too much time in regular villages and it feels generic compared to fromsoft’s more out there areas. There are caves and illusion forests but overall I feel most the environments you go through fail to be nearly as interesting and creative as foutainhead palace and senpou temple for example. Minor complaint tho, didn’t ruin the experience in any way for me. As a reverse example, I think DS2 has good area design, but terrible level design, iron keep looks cool, but its placement above a poison valley makes no sense, crown of the old iron king dlc looks amazing, but some enemy placement there is downright atrocious.
I think almost all of sekiro's areas are pretty average, though consistently so. None of them are particularly bad, but only a couple are really solid. I would say fountainhead palace and ashina castle reach the great area level, but only senpou temple and maybe hirata estate reached the good area level. All the rest are average at best. They're consistent which is nice, but few of them really stand out.
Ah, great video! I’m so happy you enjoyed my take on the Castle! I knew it was gonna be down between the Castle and the Palace, but #2 ain’t nothing to sneeze at.
I actually really like Mibu Village mob design. It's like the developers challenging themselves to create an enemy that is super weak, yet challenging for the player. Well when you have 6 ghosts attacking and chasing you while also being leg trapped by those underground ghosts, it's easy to appreciate how even the weakest enemies can be extremely dangerous when they are also undead like you. It was an interesting challenge clearing the entire village of all the enemies in one run.
Fountainhead sure looks very sweet but overall pretty borring area... Ashina Castle looks and is fucking awesome from start to finish. Senpou is the best looking area in the game for me and it was fun as hell to finish
Agreed. Enemies and level design are huge parts. The enemies are terrible, the environment isn't super special. The gameplay adds little. It's just kinda pretty. That' about it.
Even I believe Ashina Castle is the best area in Sekiro. Its big, vertical, and filled with crazy enemies, like the NightjarNinjas. It amazed me on my first run.
Sunken Valley Passage was one of those areas that FS put in just to mess with us and troll us. You can use the umbrella to mitigate all incoming damage which is nice, but it is a bummer that such a neat area that shows off the grappling hook mechanic encourages you to sprint through as fast as possible because of the snipers.
Damn I just started replaying Sekiro and there was a lot of areas I just forgot about, I think it's one of my biggest issues with an otherwise great game
Another thing I truly adore in fountainhead, is the moment you enter the Nobels (red robes) area. It is small but puts a twist on the area typical to from. Yes you could see the problems even before but that was when it really hit me with the story. Also like mini village althought i don’t know why.
No surprise with #1. When I first walked in with that music and sunlight reflecting in the water, I was just overwhelmed with the atmosphere and otherworldly beauty of it all.
Honestly was surprised I was in the video, I was too vague on that comment. I personally think you made the right decision on Abandoned Dungeon, I think it's the pretty good though. I found the area memorable with how annoying the monsters were when I first entered the area. And the boss was very challenging too, it wasn't boring to me, but I guess that's just my opinion. It was hella scary too, I wouldn't want that area to be big either. Dunno why I felt bad when I killed Doujun tho, maybe cause I though he was an enemy I guess? Even tho he technically is. Nice vid DeMod, and thanks for letting us have our say on the rankings :)
My favorite is.... SENPOU TEMPLE. It got darker and darker. At first I really didn't think that i have to fight those monks, so i just passed them walking, but what the place turned out to be still haunts me after finishing the game.
was so damn happy when i found out a way to only kill one cannon man and still get a stealth blow on snake eyes in the depths, made that fight infinetly less infuriating
I mean once you’ve 100%ed the game and have nothing to spend it on then sure, but lump of grave wax is by far the limiting factor in the prosthetic upgrades. Even more than lapis. You have to late game grind for the grave wax to get all prosthetics, there isn’t any other upgrade material that’s like that
I just wanted to say: Thank you. I'm currently playing Sekiro and man, this game is kicking my ass and I'm loving it every second. This game has lore that is my favorite of almost every game, period. From soft Is a badass company, I'm happy that this channel and the explanation of these bosses and areas have helped pushed me past the fear of Rage that may come from a game from this company (I tried playing Dark Souls and the first town killed me over and over, this game is another story all together)
Snake eyes Shirafuji and Shirahagi are easily some of the hardest mini bosses in the game. I think in your mini boss ranking you put the end game seven ashina spears as the hardest, but I beat him on my first try. The snake eyes killed me the most out of any mini boss I think, their gun blast comes out so fast and is hard to read, it has to be deflected or dodged and can’t be blocked otherwise you take damage. Their perilous attack absolutely melts your hėalth bar. O’rin messed me up too a handful of times before I got good enough at deflecting to beat her. Some of the lone shadows with the sabimaru can be tough too
Hey Demod, I know its kinds come and gone but The Witcher 3 had 5 year anniversary recently and I think it would be nice to have a boss ranking on it from you. I know it has a lot of bosses but still. Thanks anyway
Nah DS3's color pallet is perfect. Giving it more color ruins the mood of the game. It's supposed to look lacking in color due to the world being even more sickly and waning than any of the previous games.
I watched this immediately after watching your response to the dark souls II areas video. I'm a big fan of your commentary and hope that you kept your promise to make the videos that you want and are passionate about DeMod!
I don’t think that fountainhead palace should get the 1st place. Yes, the place is beautiful and the okami are very well made, the erratic and almost playful fighting styles along with the shouts they make is excellent at least. However, Sekiro has a lot of areas where exploration is advised and even encouraged, leading to little secrets and mostly powerful items used to upgrade your stuff. Though at the beginning of fountainhead, excluding the corrupted monk, you are forced to go through a linear path design with almost no verticality and have to go through one of the most annoying enemy types, the palace nobles. To top that off you have dogs throwing lightning at your back and you need to go all the way to the other side of the area to even allow access to the rest of the area, which is mainly underwater which is undesirable in my opinion. The carp barely gives any challenge, although the NPC quest is a nice little touch to it and the divine dragon, one of the best bosses in the game imo, barely puts up any of a fight, having to just repeat the same moves over and over again and dodging some heavily telegraphed attacks.
@@itami04 The only time you'd feel the difficulty ramping up is after 4 playthroughs and not using the Dancing Dragon's Mask to compensate for your Attack Power (AP past 51 would only increase damage by about 0.4 per hit). And at that point your health would feel like you don't have any prayer beads on
Weird... I thoroughly explored the fog area and didn't found the drunkard glutton boss! Just found the boring decapitated ghost. Did they remove the drunkard in a patch or something?
I think you got Gun Fort wrong. Yes, there's a thousand snipers with infinite aggro range, but that's the point. You're MEANT to run through the area as fast as possible, and the Gun Fort's design actually works really well in allowing you to do that with multiple branching paths and generous grapple points. In this video, I can see footage of you literally stopping to block and trying to see the snipers from afar. That's clearly the wrong approach, as you know you'll get pelted by bullets if you stop. You also make it sound like you're desperately trying to dodge shots as you go through the area. As long as you keep moving, you WILL NOT get hit. The snipers don't lead their shots at all, so as long as you're grappling or making use of your infinite sprint, you'll be fine. You WILL get hit if you stay still, which is what you did. I love that FROM designed an area that encourages speedrunning, as it's a tactic most players use in their games anyway (when making their way back to bosses and such). Everything you complained about was an intentional design decision which works well in Gun Fort's context. They only become negative points if you try to trudge through it like any other area. No wonder you called it a "frustrating slog"
I wish i got to see the later areas! After i got the mortal blade my game files got corrupted and i really didnt want to restart. Is it worth redownloading and starting over just to get to experience these areas for myself?
So in the poison area I cheesed snake eye hard I hated the mini boss at gun fort I hated her at the poison pool so I discovered if she stands in the poisen she will take damage might take a good minute but I aggroed her grappled up high and crouched so she couldn't hit me then she got poisened then when she walked out to get a angle I jumped down rinse and repeat the poisen won't kill her but it will drop her so low one attack will stagger her into a deathblows
My first Abandoned Dungeon walkthrough basically meant getting my ass kicked (litterally) by a goddam Purple Ninja (I had PTSD of the one guarding the Crow tool before meeting Lady Butterfly), then stumbling against a Schichimen Warrior because I wanted to see the purple thingy and somehow forgot how much Headless destroyed me, only to jump into a pit that lead me to a place I was definitely not prepared to go to since I hadn't even climbed the castle to meet lightning boy yet. Not how you make a good first impression, Dungeon.
I went to the hirata estate first. Like, I was so stuck on ashina outskirts cuz I was trash at this game that the second I got past the first few zones and got the bell, I was happy to go somewhere else. I got through it reasonably well and was enjoying the game a lot more there, I was able to beat both mini bosses with some trial and error and get the idol in the mansion. When I realised there was a boss next, I left and tried ashina again now that I had a good few hours of experience, and I was a lot better beating the general mini boss and moving on to the ogre and snake. It wasn’t too bad going there first, but I’m happy i did go there first cuz I would have put the game down if I didn’t.
I definitely seem to have a higher opinion on the Sekiro areas in general than you and most FromSoft fans do but I agree with the top 3 . Ashina Castle is the best area for me but I loved Fountainhead Palace as well.
Hirata is straight up a developers love letter to Onimusha 2. Even down to the music. The escalating difficulty, the colour tones. It's a wonderful call back.
Great video as usual! I remember when filling out this survey none of the areas really evoked any sentimental feels or anything. They each had some level of annoyance for me, I think the highest I rated an area was 8/10 (fountainhead). Glad to see some people liked the areas and were able to speak on it.
Honestly, going through, except for the Forrest, Senpou, and the Castle, I had the same feeling. Sekiro's combat is it's bread and butter and the areas leave me a little bit forgetful. I can't recall much from the areas and pretty much only enjoy the actual encounters.
Tbh I think the Boddhisatva Valley is a gorgeous and perfectly designed area. Those needlessly gigantic Buddhist statues in front of massive cliffs is jaw-dropping imagery for me
Honestly the first two areas are just my favorite, the ashina outskirts and the first ashina castle. Were just simple, nice and best with multiple bosses. And runner ups for some of the best quests. Then my third favorite has to be ashina castle first invasion and then the second invasion, basically I love the castle in all three ways. I also love senpou temple, I hate the sunken valley and the mibu village tho.
I really like the reservoir. You start the game there as a weak, depressed, failed man. You'll come back later and now you've improved and ready to fight the Seven Ashina Spears, an elite Ashina warrior. In the end you'll be back as The Wolf, The Undefeated Shinobi of The Divine Heir, there to eradicate and obliterate anyone who stands in your way to help your lord in severing Immortality. In the end you defeat your nemesis, Genichiro, in the exact place he took your arm in an attempt to take your life. In the end you complete your quest by defeating the greatest warrior Japan has to offer in his prime. So much happens here and it contributes to the story more than any other location.
Something about Senpou Temple that I don't think was mentioned in the video. This place, combined with relatively early point in the game where you can access it, is a perfect farming location for candies. Each type of monk has a chance to drop one of these consumables, and you can easily stealth kill a number of them thanks to the bushes. Considering how close the statue is, relative to the number of monks you can find on the hill leading to the temple itself, this place allows you to be less paranoid over wasting your consumables on lesser fights, as you know you can get them later. It definitely had an effect on me, as in my first run I pretty much never used candies, outside of few bosses. But the second run, I would munch on them regularly when facing tougher enemies.
Was wondering when you would do this, I finally get to see your opinion on areas of sekiro, hopefully we will see more sekiro rankings in the future :).

Fountainhead feels like a DLC area.
22:20 Love how things always end up back at DS1 lol.
Keep up the great work DeMod!
Didn't even have to watch to know Fountainhead Palace was gonna be the best. The entire area might be FromSoft's best example of good level design.
"Wakes up" "Dmod Video uploaded" Me: Oh hell yeah
21:34 I'm sorry, "ekelon"?!
Ah, great video! I’m so happy you enjoyed my take on the Castle! I knew it was gonna be down between the Castle and the Palace, but #2 ain’t nothing to sneeze at.
It was an excellently written analysis. Thanks for contributing!
I didn’t fight the headless until right before I beat the game, and had that whistle thing. They are SUPER easy with that whistle...
Fountainhead is up there with Anor Londo ,ringed city and Sens
fortress
I agree, a great sight with shit ass enemies.
@@jessewilliams8724 The Okami warriors in Fountainhead are fun to fight though.
@@Romb772 the nobles aren't tho
@@vaskopoh9512 the nobles are more of a lavel hazard, and as that they serve their purpose well, without them the area would just completely fall apart.
@@Romb772 Not with the mist nobles. If you try to take the water path first you get hit by lightning
I honestly didn’t enjoy all of Fountainhead, I think Ashina castle is better.
I'd put Senpou above Fountainhead as well. Probably even ashina outskirts
Okami woman are a lot funner enemies than those areas
Because fountain head is really well designed and enemies are fun it’s the best
Im thankful that the abandoned dungeon is short, its so scary
Damn I just started replaying Sekiro and there was a lot of areas I just forgot about, I think it's one of my biggest issues with an otherwise great game
It must be fate that a Sekiro areas video from Demod is uploaded the same day I buy the game for my birthday.
Happy Birthday Cameron!! Hope you enjoy the game
theDeModcracy thanks! And I definitely will!
I think you should have ranked all 3 different versions of ashina castle differently, the normal one, first invasion and the final chaotic one.
Literally 12 through 8 I was like "This area wasn't that bad. I loved it!"
This probably just shows how much I love this game.
I know right? Abandoned dungeon is the only area where I would agree on his assessment. Every other area I enjoyed.
"Ashina Outskirts" is a "brilliant extension of the tutorial."
*Cries in ogre food*
Demod please make a " best boss fight cutscene"(from software games) ranking
That is actually a really good idea...
I know you did not call lump of grave wax “relatively common”
It is relatively common
I mean once you’ve 100%ed the game and have nothing to spend it on then sure, but lump of grave wax is by far the limiting factor in the prosthetic upgrades. Even more than lapis. You have to late game grind for the grave wax to get all prosthetics, there isn’t any other upgrade material that’s like that
@@ArmageddonPhysics It drops almost always from the nobles
Please do a ranking for the PERSONA 5 Palaces and/or DEVIL MAY CRY Stages!
It's about time.
I'm currently on my first sekiro run. Gonna tackle the ape tommorow wish me luck!
You got this!
I wish you luck my friend. Be sure to bring plenty fire crackers!
How'd you go dude? It's been six months so I'm assuming you finished?
@@bradleypeters6656 oh my lawd thank u. Yes i finished Sekiro as well as finished Dark souls 3 for the first time ever.
@@housekinokuni903 nice dude. Which ending did you go for?
Some of the lone shadows with the sabimaru can be tough too
Good to see ya uploading again! Missed ya Demod 😎
For the gun fort all you need is the umbrella for the bullet showering down at you
Hey Demod, I know its kinds come and gone but The Witcher 3 had 5 year anniversary recently and I think it would be nice to have a boss ranking on it from you. I know it has a lot of bosses but still. Thanks anyway
Tw3 bosses really arent difficult or interesting imo, and i finished the game and all dlc on death march
I see Dmod and I upvote, best TH-camr by far 👌🏻
it’s....liking the video
Also, Senpou Temple reminds me so much of Onimusha. I loved the use of color there.
Your videos have always been a personal favorite and it always makes me extremely happy to see you post! Keep it up you absolute legend
I honestly think the ashina depths and mibu village ranking should have been reversed
Nah DS3's color pallet is perfect. Giving it more color ruins the mood of the game. It's supposed to look lacking in color due to the world being even more sickly and waning than any of the previous games.
The area with the group of monkeys together, just use the whistle and they'll all start killing each other. Pretty entertaining
I like the ashina depths just because it reminds me of the lost river from Subnautica
Good to see another Sekiro video
My top 5
5: hirata estate
4: ashina castle
3: senpou temple
2: fountainhead palace
1: mibu village
Hirata estate main hall has such good music, fighting Juzuo early game was kinda worth it
I watched this immediately after watching your response to the dark souls II areas video.
No lie in my first playthrough I beat Gybou first try. Parrying him is so easy
I did as well, but he was my second boss (fought Lady Butterfly as my first and that took forever lol)
I didnt die to gyobu even on ng+, lets see how ng+2 gyobu treats me
@@itami04 The only time you'd feel the difficulty ramping up is after 4 playthroughs and not using the Dancing Dragon's Mask to compensate for your Attack Power (AP past 51 would only increase damage by about 0.4 per hit). And at that point your health would feel like you don't have any prayer beads on
Wasent the whole point of gun fort to be immediately noticed and shot at the moment you got close? That part was amazing if you ask me
A hell yeah for Fountainhead Palace!
Fountainhead Palace blew me away when I first entered. It was such a vibrant and beautiful level. It was every bit as divine as it was supposed to be.
What’s the music played during the mibu village section? 😯😯
Yes a new video from Demod!!
Try to defeat the Sichimin warrior without divine confetti, anti-air death blow, and on 3 attack power. It won't be an afterthought then
I can’t lol I have 41 attack power
I wish i got to see the later areas! After i got the mortal blade my game files got corrupted and i really didnt want to restart. Is it worth redownloading and starting over just to get to experience these areas for myself?
Yesss
That sucks, but I absolutely recommend going back to it. The stuff you have to replay should go quicker than before as well
Love your videos
Keep up the great work
You need more subs bro your the best youtuber ever
I liked the gunfort and was able to stealth kill all the inhabitants, so don't think rushing is required of even the best approach
Glad this ranking is out. But man I really need to finish this game. Got stuck and dropped it. Need to head back for sure.
I'm glad i am not the only one who discovered ashina depths before fighting genichiro
If you're going to sunken valley without an umbrella, you're doing it wrong.
community rankings are back ! really missed these
You can’t spell “Ashina”without “Ash” ☝️
I had so much trouble with the poison snake eyes in my first playthrough
Man watching this makes me wish we got sekiro dlc imagine what areas we could have got. If the dlc was entered like hirata that is.
Yo maybe I’m tripping but why does the fear ball thingy at 1:28-1:29 look like a face. Slow it down if u need to.
I was surprised to see it too! But yes they're balls of floating faces
Tion lol wow this whole time I never noticed it.
Well, yeah. They always have been lol
When you're the "good guy" but you pick off all of Ashina's best troops so they get conquered by the Ministry.
I definitely seem to have a higher opinion on the Sekiro areas in general than you and most FromSoft fans do but I agree with the top 3 . Ashina Castle is the best area for me but I loved Fountainhead Palace as well.
E"ssh”alon my good friend. Not E"k"alon.
Been waiting for this.Nice work bro
