Oh man I love the impulse buying replay, to bad you are no longer doing videos, this is by far the best channel and I learned a lot from you a decade ago. Ultralight is becoming mainstream, REI is starting to make gear based on ultralight, you were ahead of your time and should capitalize on the new wave!
Steve, your presentations are clear, straightforward, and intelligent. I've followed your advice and have already dropped 10+ lbs out of my 7-day pack for this year...keep feeding us advice!
By far one of the best pieces of information I've watched. I used to laugh at your tiny buck knife vs my rambo knife. But after a few trips lugging it around and only cutting paracord or blisters, I now find myself happy with the 1oz Buck folder. Bought a scale and watch my water. Down from 60lbs to 20lbs with 5 days food. Life is GOOD!!! lol Thanks
In glad I came across your channel. I plan to do some hiking camping and light mountain climbing (non technical climb) this year. I look forward to watching your videos
I use the Six Moon Designs tent (see the separate video for that) and the Western Mountaineering HighLite sleeping bag (see our WM sleeping bag video), and the Sun Minicomp II. Thanks, Steve
I had a Eureka Biker! My son borrowed, and lost it at a music festival. After lots of research, I picked the Nemo Obi I as my solo tent (HumbleOutdoors $270 w/ free Nemo footprint). The vestibule is perfectly sized for tucking my pack and shoes in for the night and the tents sports plenty of ventilation.
Got mine down to 13.43 pounds for the basics with everything but food and water since they are expendable and fluctuate per trip. Used the thought of do I Need it or do I Want it , wanted it was dropped and only use what is needed. If it was not used by the 2nd trip then it was shelved and left home the next time. Have not lost any comfort while camping , just doing it smarter. Probably could go lighter especially in the Summer and might later on.
Now three years later and I have the Base Weight under 10 pounds , to be precise 7 and 3/4 pounds. . Equipment has evolved over the years by being lighter. A 10 ounce pack helped a lot in reducing the base weigh.
I'm not an ultralighter by any means, but I embrace the logistics behind your system. I build for bulletproof durability with potential extended stays out in the wilderness, so my full kit comes out to the low 30lb range. Of course, this is for a 3 season kit and a full tool set for certain activities that I do while out there (not just recreational backpacking). Great video and I appreciate your insight. :)

Just my own desire to hike light and have more fun.
@MrSchpankme
The tent in the video is an old Eureka "Biker" from 1986. Still going strong as a backup tent when I go with kids and grandkids.
Love ya man! The Joe Friday of the backpacking world! Thanks for the vid.
You're the best. Thanks for being so informative.
The light tent is the Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo. The blue bivy is the Equinox. The green tarp is the UL 8 x 10' by Equinox. Steve
