I concur, found this copy today in the second hand store, remembered your comment and snatched this 1st release German copy (mastered by Capital/ KP) and i am super happy with this. the 2x45RPM reprint is ordered, but on backorder. This german print will see mee through the waiting process. :-)

This is the end all be all channel for record enthusiasts! Seriously in a few years time if these keep coming out then it’ll make pretty much every other source for seeking out this info (like Steve Hoffman and other forums) irrelevant! Very glad that you’re doing this service for the vinyl community! Helping people cut through the BS will make it much more likely the newcomers will really hear the difference and continue to invest in the awesomeness of vinyl! The headache of research is such a put off, you can dig for hours on forums trying to find out the same info you get in these videos.

Fleetwood Mac's is not precisely the kind of music I like to listen to the most, but the incredible sound of the 2x45 RPM version made me fall deeply in love with this album. One of my most cherished items in my collection.

This was very informative. I never knew there were so many pressings out there. I never knew you could get pressings in a 45 rpm except in the old little single side(2 songs, 1 on each side). So, thank you very much

Went to a local record store and found the Pallas Press Version of the album. Was super hyped as I’ve been told that all records pressed at Pallas are desirable, and the sound was amazing. I’m new to vinyl but so far it has been fun to learn about the different pressings and versions of just one album.

This album was discussed in The Sound City Documentary as being produced there as well as the studio from which the band was formed. The studio had a hidden gem of a rare analog 8028 Neve Recording Console and had a reputation for recording a strong punchy sound that defined Rock Music.Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, a virtually unknown folk rock duo in 1974, were the first artists recorded on this Neve as they tracked their debut album. During this time, while scouting Sound City as a possible place to record the next Fleetwood Mac album, Mick Fleetwood heard a playback of the Buckingham Nicks track “Frozen Love”. Fleetwood was so impressed by what he heard that Buckingham and Nicks were asked to join the band, resulting in the multi-platinum success story the band soon became. More important for Sound City, he was also impressed by the way the recording sounded. Fleetwood Mac recorded their next, self-titled album (featuring “Rhiannon”) there. Sound City lists this album as being recorded there in 1977. Fleetwood Mac in 1975, and Fleetwood Mac Greatest Hits in 1988.

Pretty good documentary. Could've done without the Groll self-promotion nonsense though. And Rumours was recorded at the Record Plant in Sausalito with some mixing done at Sound City a few months after.

I was about to buy Rumours on vinyl, after recently buying my first turntable since my teens, (I'm now 45) and I'm so glad I found this video before I clicked buy. I was about to buy the horrible digitally mastered version without knowing it! I've now spent way more and bought the deluxe 2 disc, 45 rpm Pallas. I feel very naughty spending so much on 1 album, but Rumours is a fantastic album and deserves to be played in the highest quality possible.

  • @TheMirolab

Yeah!.... I got the dual-45 rpm version when it first came out, and YES it's one of the most amazing sounding LPs I own. The dynamics and clarity are breathtaking! It also breaks my heart that so much great music is being made today too... but only to be squashed into sonic mush by over-loudness and compression. This album is a poster-child for dynamically unrestricted POP music!

I bought this album on Amazon a few months back when they got their restock. This album has gotten so hard to get your hands on in person, so I kept checking Amazon every few days for a couple months until they got their restock in. Thankfully the copy that I received is the Pallas pressing, and it is one of my favorite albums to play since it sounds so friggin' good.

That 2011 45rpm was my favorite way to listen to this until I heard a transfer of the Reel-To-Reel, a medium which i'm not a huge fan of though this one is incredible!

We need more content like this!... this is so useful! Informative and it really teaches you valuable information about pressings but also about the artists... I just found out that I had a European version of this album... bummer! LOL!.... The good thing is that I believe there's a near-record store that has one from Pallas! Gonna try to get that one and actually compare both pressings. Thanks for the videos! Keep 'em coming!

You can also tell which Canadian plant pressed later 70s WEA records. Usually it's a standalone single letter on the label...
      C -- Calgary, or
Q -- Toronto (Quality Records pressed for several labels)

You are right about early plates and different countries. I have an original Canadian KP pressing. Matrix has F13/F11. I picked it up at a local record show for $7.50 a couple years ago. It is very minty and sounds great. Has great separation and sounds crisp. I lucked out with it and don't need another one.

It's Feb 2024 and the 2 x 45 rpm Gray/Hoffman cut is back in print. Their 33 (Pressed at Pallas) is getting hard to find now. In Europe, the crappy 33 has been replaced by a new Chris Bellman cut from 2021, which is superb (his cut of Fleetwood Mac S/T is also excellent).

I just purchased a 1979-82 pressing with the Warner shield logo and faint lines label. It also has a yellowed background cover which is pretty cool. I put it up against my 1st pressing Burbank label and the Pallas single lp versions. It held up very nicely!! I also tested out the 2X45 version that was loaned to me. It was pretty sensational, but I didnt hear a vast difference between the 2lp and the single lp Pallas version. I always use the track You Make Loving Fun as the litmus test of sound quality for its thumping kick drum and smooth mid range clavinet with the hi hat and wind chimes defining the treble. My sound system is a Pioneer SX 1250. Pioneer SG 9500 EQ. Pioneer 4 way speaker system. 2 HPM 100s and 2 CS 99a. Also A Pioneer PL 71 Direct Drive Turntable fitted with a Ortofon MC 3 Turbo Moving Coil stylus. Handles Rock and Jazz, which are my two favorite styles of music equally well. Also, of note, KENDUN pressings and non -KENDUN pressings of FM's 1st Lindsey and STevie lp are virtually identical. the 1st pressings anyway. I dont own an 80s pressing of that lp.

I have both the "pressed by capitol" original US pressing and the newer "2009" version. I played both back to back to see if the newer one was the UK or US version since I removed the sticker. I played "The Chain" from the beginning to the end of the first chorus 6 times. Three times just for the intro and 3 till the end of chorus and just wow, how better the original US "capitol" pressing is compared to the newer one. Better bass, dynamics, better sounding acoustic guitar....just wow. I could feel the punch of the bass when the chorus came in through my chest, while the newer one sounded flat and had no dynamic. So I'm guessing I have the UK version of the newer press because it's not even close how better the "capitol" pressing was.

the best sophomore record to ever release. this is what a follow up record should sound like bop after bop! the tone and the track order is masterful. between fking, breaking up and on a coke bender they spawned something only god was said to achieve and thats perfection. the sound engineering and the instrumentals embodying Stevie and Buckinghams vocals is mixed to absolutely perfect. 10/10 Zero Skips!

I have the Natalus Pressing thought sounded great, back when it first came out, heard it on my brothers stero system, Crown amp & preamp, putting out 32 wpc, with an JVC QLY5F moving coil Otofone cartrige, all this coming out to a pair of Klipschorns, all that said the album sounded awesome, when we blew out his single pain windows again, lol. I just compared my Nautilus to my sister’s original pressing. The Nautilus has a slightly softer presentation, but is slightly better in most areas. Vocals are more lifelike, a bit more detail, etc. This really works for Go Your Own Way. But the original has one thing that the Nautilus doesn’t. The drums in Dreams just explode out the speakers, which really propels the song.

Unless I'm unaware that the same cut was released as a breakout standalone release, there's no mention of the clear vinyl edition from the Fleetwood Mac: 1975 To 1987 box set. I don't know how well regarded this box set is, so wondering if it wasn't included because it falls into the inferior thus disregarded category or if it wasn't mentioned because it's a box set vinyl and not an individual release.

Was very surprised to see the dutch white vinyl reviewed, the version I own . I always enjoyed the pretty visual aspect and it always sounds good . I don't play it much because the songs are all so popular, they are pretty much imprinted in my memory, so don't carry great emotional impact until the album really gets going.
The two times I ever saw mick Fleetwood play, once, memorably, with his band at the whiskey a go go, before he added women, and much later , when I happened to stop to check out the Malibu country days festival as I was driving the coast. I guess it was a local pick up band, and they played well, as we danced in the dirt. Both times he played an extended solo on his balls, seen hanging from his belt on the rumors cover picture. Turns out they are not just a fashion accessory, but enable the man to make a unique artistic statement, if you go for that kind of stuff.

Absolutely agree about the U.S. 1st pressings..I have a Jacksonville pressing that sucks, and a Winchester double KP that is great. I also agree about the prices, they are insane, I got mine for $1 or $3 10-15 years ago. I also have the Pallas LP and it's very good.

Mike, on the original American pressing that you liked, was the stamper a low number? I think Ken Perry had to cut Rumours 50 times or more. I can see how F4, for example, would be better than F33. Eventually boredom would have settle in. For the Japanese black OBI copy, did it also have an F stamper number?

I went to your web store and could't find the Palas pressing. There are two types there, both sold out, but anyone is indicated to be the Pallas' one. Another question. Do you know when it will be available?

Hi, great video. I’d love one of the Hoffman/Gray LP’s . I have an original UK with the tree, and a STRAWBERRY deadwax one with a warmer brothers logo on white label. I think it’d be worth you getting a copy of that one to add to this review as it is excellent. I had a different original uk once that trumped them both but I left the curtain open on a hot day and the son made the record warp. Do you know any info on the STRAWBERRY?

Strawberry is Strawberry mastering which is a long defunct mastering studio in the UK.

Hi Mike I agree with your view of Japanese pressings generally being anaemic but assuming all the detail is there and the vinyl is quiet sometimes I've found with suitable eq or a bit of bass boost can really good, hence I think having tone controls on a pre amp for this very reason make it a very useful feature.Would be interested to hear if you have tried this?

Another great comparison. Just wondering, never hear any discussion on Canadian pressings. Are they just too similar to the U.S. pressings , or are the always just middle of the road.
My Canadian pressing of Rumours is super quite, and has good bottom end. Just wondering as I'm in Canada, and majority of my vinyl are Canadian pressings. Some of my Canada pressings, sound just as good if not better than the U.S. pressing of same album.
    Brad.

Take Sticky Fingers as an example. The Cdn Warner pressing is fantastic. Full of life and bite. My understanding and I think it's noted in the old Gerry Osborne Record Collector books that Cdn pressings especially 60's and early 70's were on thicker vinyl. I also find that the ones pressed at Capitol Smith Falls I think it's denoted by the letters acr in the deadwax are usually the excellent.

I live in Norway and many of the records we get over here is pressed and some mixed here in Europe. What can I look for to get a good sounding pressing of any type of record? Any tips?

On the 45 rpm version, I have heard that even though it says Pressed at Pallas, that's not good enough to ensure you are getting the primo version. You also have to make sure that Made in U.S.A. has to be under the barcode. Michael Fremer says that you do not want the one that says Printed in U.S.A. Manufactured in E.U. Does anyone know if this is true?

Yes Brian you are correct. The best version is the Made in USA pressing. This topic is covered in the video at 10:30 where he shows the USA version which calls “dynamite” and the European version which he calls “crummy” and they both look identical on the front.

Same plural applies to moose, unless that's changed to "mooses" as well...

Okay, can someone help me: if you are talking about, for example, an US first pressing (let's say of The Wall). Which label are you talking about then? I guess that 1st pressing means the year it came out (1979 if we talk about The Wall), but even then, Discogs shows 15 different labels for US 1979 copies... can somebody please help!?

The sticker on your 1st press German copy is odd as that was used a lot in the 80's for a Nice Price budget reissue series in Europe. I have a Made In West Germany copy which I believe is the very first press and it's way better than my UK first press at least.
