Here's a fun fact: All the Street Fighter movie actors were contractually obligated to do a motion capture session for the tie-in game after the filming was done in Australia. The actor who played T. Hawk, Gregg Rainwater, apparently decided he didn't feel like doing his session and flew home without telling anyone. As a result, T. Hawk is absent from both the arcade and home versions of the game.

Fun fact: One of Gouken's Winning Quotes in Super Street Fighter IV is "You must defeat me to stand a chance!" acknowledging the infamous Shen Long quote.
SF4 had a lot of really good Win Quotes. Man! SF4 was so good! I can't believe they stopped making Street Fighter after it

Also in Street Fighter IV there is a title that can be unlocked for using Gouken which says AKA SHEN LONG.

成龙 is chéng lóng (romanised in the 90s to Sheng Long), chéng lóng is actually Jackie Chan's Mandarin name. You must defeat Jackie Chan to have a chance.
You know how most legacy fighting games have a Bruce Lee analogue (Fei Long for SF, Marshal and Forest Law for Tekken, etc.)? Now I REALLY want a Jackie Chan tribute in a fighting game. Closest is Lei Wulong in Tekken, but we can go deeper.
And in the City Hunter movie Jackie Chan morphs into different Street Fighter characters. Jackie Chan should be in Street Fighter as a "Shang Tsu" type character.

I love the military term FUBAR, if you don't know what it means it sounds very innocuous.
The reasoning behind Charlie's name change was that "Charlie" was named in the western release, while in Japan he didn't have a name until Alpha.
SF4 later canonized his full name as Charlie Nash, which you can still see on his dog tags in SF5.
I remember that he was still named Nash in Street Fighter II V, though he looked rather different than his official Alpha look.
ACKCHUALLLLLYYYYY...
"Nash" was Guile's dead friend's name ever since Street Fighter II, but Capcom USA didn't feel like "Nash" was an American enough sounding name, so they changed it.
And then, he became a character and everything got screwed up.
UDON comics rectified this by calling him "Charlie Nash", making Nash his last name and Charlie his first and Capcom rolled with it.
This allowed Capcom to use Nash as his name in Street Fighter V worldwide, as everyone knows his full name now.
Personally, I like him being called Nash in SFV as that gives a feeling of "my name isn't Charlie anymore. That man is dead..."
@@Davethe3rd Street Fighter II V also acknowledged this with their interpretation of Charlie. He's known as Nash to the audience until his final scene where Guile calls him Charlie. I loved Street Fighter II V.
@@RotaAbyssian The funny thing is, Manga Video didn't even realize who "Nash" was until they dubbed the episode where he died. They they had Guile randomly yell out "Chaaarrrlieeeee!" in mourning.
@@Davethe3rd I did not know the behind the scenes info about that. Rad. makes me wonder if not knowing a character's identity is why Akuma is Lord Background Cameo in SF II V as well.
Just a thought on the Japanese to Chinese to English translation process for SF2 arcade. Many movies from Japan are actually dubbed for English speaking audiences in Hong Kong, especially at that time. So that could explain why it might be translated into Chinese first.
It makes better sense that Claw is called Vega instead of Balrog since it actually sounds Spanish.
As a big boss and human "monster", Balrog would have been ok for Dictator.

You find it hard to believe Ken would abandon his love for fighting for a passion of science?
Well...I mean, Tommy Oliver did it. He also briefly wanted to be a race car driver, but we don't talk about that.
Actually, Capcom went as far as having the title "AKA Sheng Long" among the ones players could get by doing Gouken's combo trials.
Possibly my favorite head-scratching bit of localization weirdness is the early Yakuza games, where everybody's name is correct except for Kiryu, who everybody inexplicably just calls Kazuma, because I assume some bonehead at Sega thought that Americans wouldn't understand why people say the SECOND name FIRST!
Oh and they changed Kazama to Fuma, which made sense because Kazuma/Kazama, but then in Yakuza 2 and 3 there's no English VA, so they just say Kazama and the text says Fuma and oh good lord dude.
It's good that they went Beyond the (Japan only) Yakuza 1 & 2 HD release and did a full remake in Kiwami 1 & 2 internationally instead.
TBH, part of me suspects "Fuma" is a misreading of "Kazama", made on the basis of translating the text without the JP voice track to clarify how the kanji is read. I only say that because you could read 風間 that way (though it feels unintuitive to do so).
I defeated Sheng Long, and all I got was this Stand that says Chance.

Vega works better with "Claw" because he's a Spaniard, and Balrog works great as a ring name for "Boxer". "Dictator" got the short end of the stick because of this though, but then we would not have known the loving grip of the Pax Bisonica.

I remember finding out that Nintendo had changed the character significantly for the NES version.
Although they couldn't help throwing in that "you're going to be punch drunk when I'm done with you" or something like that.
localization was pretty bad back in the last 80's to mid 90's where mistranslations and censorship practices were a lot more common while adding backstory not intended by the authors.

I don't know if it counts as localisation but "Rolento" is an atrocious piece of Engrish that's supposed to be "Lorenzo", as Lorenzo Lamas from Falcon Crest or Renegade.

oh man, the Sheng Long thing... I remember a fair amount of that! (the 'best trick that didn't work' from the buyer's guide, and the updated version in 1997 and subsequent letter mentioning the spelt out 'APRIL FOOLS' thing) ... I *have* also seen that MUGEN-made version of him that actually emulates what his moveset might have looked like as per the description in that April 1992 issue!

The unheard of sequal of street fighter: Human killing machine
How the c-64 worked is that you had one screensize worth of info for spites so the final boss merkeva only had standing, moving, punch kick and two defeat sprites only
On a side note: I was working on a fangame remake of Street Fighter 2010 where you played as Captain Commando instead of Ken. It used ripped sprites from Marvel vs Capcom arcade ROMs & used Game Maker (I originally started work using Multimedia Fusion). It was a bit more of a side-scrolling action-platformer than a boss-rush-style game. Only made 2 working stages until I moved on to other things.
21:18 it says "Street Fighter USO"... The japanese word 嘘 (うそ, "uso") means "lie", so...
No it means they've been street fighting since Day One Ish.

Dunno if anyone has mentioned this already, but “Sheng Long” having a dragon arm kinda makes sense with the fact that he’s from a mistranslation of the “Dragon Punch”.
Played SF since the arcade days and never knew all this went down! Love it!
I think the reason why Gouki was renamed to Akuma for overseas was, once again, because of miscommunications between the two Capcom branches; Capcom USA wasn’t told the secret character’s name, likely because he was supposed to be a mystery until Street Fighter Alpha, and they had to make up their own name for him, even though it still wouldn’t be shown in the game itself. And you forgot to mention how all of Akuma’s lines were removed for international release, too. Fortunately, they were all restored for the latest remakes.
I think that it would have been fun if they actually had gone and made a character named Shen Long and put him in the game. It's what Midway/Netherealm did when there were rumors about characters named Ermac and Skarlet.
The full Sheng Long story is quite possibly the single most bizarrely awesome thing to happen in video games. I also feel that it may have driven the Mortal Kombat series and its own trends with hidden characters.
Guile is a charge character which make his special moves simpler to do. Thats why it was said he was for Americans to use.

Maybe they changed the name of Balrog to Vega because Vega is a Spanish surname and with that character being from Spain...
Gouki was changed to Akuma because Gouki looked liked a demon and Akuma in Japan means a malevolent fire spirit of a demon
Akuma is just a cooler name to us English speakers. I like it a lot more than Gouki, personally. I also like the sort-of-canon made by Street Fighter Assassin's Fist, where he was known as Gouki before he gave in to the Dark Hadou and supposedly killed his brother Gouken, then took on the name Akuma. but Akuma probably sounds really lame and generic to the Japanese, it literally just like being named "Demon" or "Devil." (But tell that to the Tekken games' bosses...)
The only canon are the Japanese sources namely Capcom interviews and guide books, anything movie related or anime is not. US name changes became common through the years like Sodom is Katana in SFA1 and yes as I recall he was named Akuma because it did sounded cooler in the western audience

Just one more thing about the sheng long issue. One of the win phrases from gouken in street fighter 4 is "you must defeat me to stand a chance".

What's funny is I have a copy of Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight on my mantel above my fireplace as a small monument to WTF.
Curiously, I originally thought the change of Balrog to Vega had to do with aligning Vega as a surname. Which after typing this, makes me wonder if Vega (the American localized version) had a first name.
It's interesting how long it took for that to become integrated into the games whereas Midway and the Mortal Kombat team were lurking in the arcades and every time a rumor caught on, they would find SOME way for it to show up in a future game. Key notes being: Playable Reptile, Ermac, "scorpion can turn into a scorpion", a playable shokan, and numerous others I couldn't begin to list.
The Evomindblown emote was a nice touch

Minor update regarding Sheng Long: Capcom has finally put him in a Street Fighter game, as an NPC in SF6's World Tour mode
Nash is now canonically "Charlie Nash" with Nash being his last name. That one was easy enough to fix.

Japan doesn't do the "Mortal Kombat thing" as the US/West does. While they have violent games, they too are often higher age rated or censored than their Western releases. Mortal Kombat throughout it's release history in Japan has seen censorship and platform release bans over the years.

It's kinda the opposite for me XD I grew up knowing him as Gouki and I thought Akuma was like a twin of his or something they introduced for whatever reason. It felt even more weird once I heard the way people pronounced the name "Akuma" (since its mispronounced by everybody, even the game's announcer)
Human Killing Machine actually looks like it could be fun. Sprite updates and solid controls, I think it would be a goofy good time.

There's also the problematic localisation where Bison claimed he and Cammy were lovers. Which, when you know the truth behind their relationship to one another, becomes all kind of icky.
If Shen Long literally means "Dragon Spirit," i don't see why they couldn't have just made it an official alias for Gouken. They could have written into the lore that Gouken was such a skilled fighter that his opponents believed him to literally posses the spirit of a dragon, and thus started refering to him using the alias Shen Long.

Not sure if this has been noted before, but isn't Jon Talbain's unnamed martial arts master from the Udon comic a reference to Sheng Long? He's got hair like the fake SFIII art and most notably a green dragon arm.
