- Murder and Scandal in Wales - Frightful Fridays
News of the Times Episode 265 | 1875 & 1892
1892 Abergavenny and frequent visitor of the local police, who has only just been released, is found dead in a heap with her throat cut all the way to the spine. As the country as a whole is still recovering from the nightmare of Jack the Ripper, there is an element of panic.
Our second tale from 1875 was infamous in Wales at the time. The Anglesey Clerical Scandal started off as an investigation into a mysterious death. But what rapidly unfolds is a case involving incest and fraud with a curate in charge of two parishes and the private chaplain to Lord Bolton.
Murder and scandal from Abergavenny and Anglesey Wales is today’s episode of Frightful Fridays.
Hosted by Robin Coles.

Thank you very much for your sad, historical mysteries.
Thank you - very kind! Now that we are coming back to full strength as a team, we have some brilliant stuff coming up we think! Thank you so much for your support of our little independent channel!🙏
Enjoyed the stories. Thank you for sharing your video.😊
Thank you - most kind! We always so much appreciate your support! 🙏
Halooo my British friend!! It's the yank from across the pond! Very sad stories indeed! However I think the soldier was suffering from a serious mental health issue. And what about the poor lady? So very tragic!
Thank you for your excellent videos. You certainly have a knack for story telling. Cheers mate! Tally Hooo!!!
Hulloo American cousin across the pond! 🙋♂️ We agree - PTSD was an unknown back then and it certainly sounds it, doesn't it? 🤔 We are many a person with prior soldiering experience landed in insane asylum - very very sad. It has been suggested that at least half the women placed n mental asylums during Victorian times were there due to post natal depression. That is a sweeping statement of course, but it does sound like several of the cases were. We looked into doing Broadmoor and crimes, but really, it was just too sad and depressing! Thank you so much for your support of our tiny independent channel - we do love to tell stories - but that requires an audience! Thank you!🙏
Excellent as ever Thank you
How kind! Thank you so very much! 🙌We are really pleased with our forthcoming lineup now that the whole team is on the mend! Thank you - most kind!😊
These two cases of murder and scandal in Wales were both very sad. First case, this former military man who horrifically murdered this woman for no apparent reason. I'm thrilled he received the death penalty since he was not insane. On a personal note I really object to a person being referred to as a "unfortunate class." Second case, what a despicable clergyman who would have an illicit affair with his teenage stepdaughter and she later had a baby by him and he would later deny. It's unfortunate that the baby died especially in the manner that he did. The clergyman apparently thought he wouldn't receive any formal punishment for what he did and was surprised at his sentence. Do you know whatever happened to his wife? Did she stay or leave him? Great investigating, presenting, backstories, illustrations, photos, videos, too. Take care 🦋
Great questions! 🌟 “Unfortunate class” was an indirect, supposedly somewhat more polite way, of referencing a prostitute. The actual term “prostitute” was not used in papers for ages. No - we did do some searches, but we came up with very little. The family would want to run and hide and possibly change their name to get away from the stain of scandal. They would most likely need to move as the chances of either daughter marrying where they were would have been ruined. The papers were very quiet about the wife - what an incredible shock! Than k you so much, as always, for your support!🙏
Another BRILLIANT video!! You also did a GREAT job with pronouncing the Welsh names!! ❤👍👏💖💞
Thank you! You are very generous with your praise! 👏Welsh is a really beautiful language but beyond my skill set. But, we would hate to ignore some of the great stories from the area due to my fear of pronunciation. Thank you Nadia - you are most kind! 🙏❤
@@newsofthetimes Welsh is indeed a BEAUTIFUL language, and some Welsh names are quite easy to butcher!! You did better than I would have done!! 👍👏💞💖
@@nadiabrook7871 🤗What a kind person you are! Thank you. 🙏
OK, I am from the southern United States, and cannot imagine how you managed to pronounce those Welsh clan names! I could slaughter them, but I could never pronounce them. Great job on the narration this time!
🤗Thank you. We imagine it must be somewhat painful for any Welshman to listen to the butchering of theri beautiful language! Ah well. I have also been informed that my pronunciation of some American words is equally bad! Never mind! If the story is good, we press on! 😉 Thank you for your support! 🙏
Happy St. David’s Day 😅🏴
Happy St David's day to you! ✨✨
you were brave to do wales with all those hard to pronounce names. well played sir.
Brave or foolish? 😉 It is a struggle for sure! Thank you so much for your kindness - I know i butchered it but I did try my best.. 🙏
Was Edwards ever in Whitechapel in 1888?
Great question! We are not sure - we do not believe his name came up as a suspect. 🤔If you are interested, we did do another possible suspect (several actually). The Bury case was interesting. th-cam.com/video/9NLsE1Gl-sI/w-d-xo.html 😊
The name is HAMER Not Hammer ;Please correct please
Thank you for your feedback. Much appreciated. 🙏
