  • Evil Allan Mair - a Scottish Murderous Tale
    News of the Times Episode 336 | 1843
    1843 Stirling Scotland, and an all too familiar scene has occurred of a husband practically beating his wife to death.
    But, the case becomes convoluted. 84 year old Allan Mair has a penchant for beating his wife 85 year old wife Mary. He regularly starves her, and occasionally shuts her in a trunk after a beating when he is particularly angry.
    The neighbours, who hear everything, take pity on Mary and check on her and attempt to feed her when Allan is away.
    Then one evening Mary does not recover and now Allan is looking at a murder charge.
    Other than the advanced age, this case sounds sadly familiar. But, unusually, we are given a glimpse into the extraordinary life of Allan and how he ended up into a bitter corrosive man.
    This is followed by possibly the most dramatic execution we have ever covered.
    The extraordinary life of evil Allan Mair is today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

    What a "heartbreaking," case of a woman, Mary who endured domestic violence for thirty years by her despicable common-law husband. I'm thrilled that he received the death penalty although because he was elderly the justice system didn't want to at first apply it. Do you know if Mary had any family or friends who would have helped her with lodging? Great investigating, presenting, backstory, illustrations, photos and videos, as well. Take care 🦋 P.S. Mary had a wonderful next-door neighbor who was checking on her plus providing food for her, too.

      Ye,s very heart breaking,. In general, the papers are filled with these types of stories which we usually avoid. It was the age, the trunk and the infamous execution that made us research more and then his back story - very rare to get that for the average man. Poor poor Mary - we can only suppose she was very hard up indeed at the time in her fifties when she started with him to remain in such a horrendous relationship. It would seem she had no family. It is upsetting that although neighbours were aware and saw him publicly beat her, police were not called in until it was too late. Legally, at that time, husbands had the right to "chastise" wives. Just horrendous. As we said, papers were just filled with these stories at the time. 😔

      Thank you - we thought so too! Poor poor mary - we can only assume that she was in a terrible predicament to latch onto Mair in her fifties. We doubt very much that she changed nto this overnight. His back story is fascinating! So rare to get a back story of the average man in 1843! So very upsetting that with everyone knowing, Mary received no legal support other than the kindness of neighbours. Thank you. 🙏

    Poor Mary suffered so much. Death would have been a respite from the torture. Horrible, evil, cowardly Mair. He was a cruel bas***d who happened to be old. Unless he's absolutely senile, (which would be obvious), there's no excuse for repeated beatings and deprivations. It sounded like he was sane: making up an alibi about Mary breaking the place up to explain her injuries. Awful man. He deserved the same mercy he showed to Mary and his grotesque end was his just reward. (Sorry but this case made my blood boil.)
    Selkirk, Manitoba is a small city named for the aforementioned Earl, which is about 20 km away from where I live, here in Winnipeg. Mr Mair was around these parts which makes this story that much interesting to me. Your stories are mostly in Europe, not in my backyard! lol Thanks very much. Enjoyed, as always.

      Thank you - we completely understand and sympathise with your anger. Elder crime - and frankly any crme involving the vulnerable - is that much more despicable. Yes, it sounds like Mair may have worked in your area? That would have been around 1825? he was hung in Scotland. ummm, they never did another public execution there (we believe) after what was regarded as an outrageous execution. Poor poor Mary - the case is in some ways a testament to how far women have come, in this culture at least. She would have had no legal support at the time - only the kindness of neighbours who themselves were unable to help mary in what would be her final hours. Just tragic 😔

    Mair sounds like a bitter, nasty old man!! I reckon he beat poor Mary because his mother wasn't around to batter!! After all, it was indirectly because of HER that he lost his hard earned savings!!
    What shocks me is that such an elderly man could commit murder!! Mind you, the unfortunate Mary must've been VERY frail and weak, so finishing her off probably wasn't too difficult!! Also, Mair had done a lot of physical labour all of his working life, being a drover and a labourer, so he must've been still quite fit for his age!!
    As for blaming Mary for smashing the furniture, the poor thing was too weak and injured to even lift her hand!!
    I'm glad Mair paid the penalty for his crimes!!
    Thanks for sharing this VERY tragic story, Robin!! 💔😭

      We initially were attracted to the story because of the trunk - we were researchng trunk stories, and then we saw the tremdnously sad abuse - very sadly such a comon theme in the papers. But then, we saw how his life unfolded followed by the outrageous execution - just shocking. It is rare to be able to get a glimpse into the life story of a "man of the street". How does a man who saves so carefully and finds good employment in the first half of his life, fail so miserably in the second. Nothing about his early life forcasts its later course.

      That is what we thought too! We don't know, but his bitter disappointment turned outwards on poor Mary. There is a sayng we thnk that goes along the line of"the only person who wins in a court cas eis the lawyers" - something like that. It so so rare to get a back story for an "average" person as early as 1843. Extraoridinary beginning with a very bitter ending,😔

    There seems to be no age limit, for the crime of murder, not something you normally associate with someone of such an advanst age

    • @newsofthetimes
      @newsofthetimes  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Incredibly sad! 😔It was the age and the trunk that intially drew our attention (research on trunk crimes), we generally try to avoid stories of wife abuse although it was very sadly so common and with women having no legal protection - a man could "chastise" his wife, legally - these types of stories abound in the papers. But, what was incredibly rare was the dramatic execution and the rare find, a back story of a person from the poorer social economic classes. Poor mary - we do not have her back story that would help to explain why she attached herself to man at the age of 50 who we are certain displayed the same charachteristics back then. 😔

    Women today have options, as limited as they are becoming, but back then women were treated terribly with zero options for them to leave the situation they were in. I have some personal knowledge of this within my family but I won't go beyond that. I am totally against the death penalty but killings like this make me think long and hard.

    • @newsofthetimes
      @newsofthetimes  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      So very very sorry to hear. 😔
      As for women's options - we agree! It is not perfect, but historically, at least from 1843 when the case takes place women are in a far better place than they were before. This is the beauty of history - one has a bench mark with which one can asses oneself, and society against. Here in the UK, we can also compare the social support that mary would have access to now compared to the lack of any kind of leagl support she had back then. Sad. 😔
