Saved my bacon, Rachel. Was wanting to re-string my new Noah, and couldn’t shift the pins. Didn’t know about the slot on the winder thingy. So that was really helpful No ‘beads’ on the strings, so was a bit fiddly getting it all anchored ok…found a bead from the grandkids craft cupboard for the A string, it kept pulling through however many knots I tied - had to do it 5 times! Thank you for being so generous with all your expertise.

Thank you very much for the video with the clear and understandable explanation! I just got an Islander today (the Chinese Kanile'a brand) and it was a pain trying to change the strings. Watched a couple videos here and there, but when my A-string jumped out of its place because.. I have no idea.. not large-enough knot, I guess, and I finally found your video, I managed to do my A-string proper. It was also a good tip to reuse the metal ring from the old strings (mine didn't have any, and everybody was like "just tike a double knot, that would be fine".. it might be, if I know how to do it properly, but obviouisly I don't, that's why I was looking for a video :D ). So now I am pretty confident that most probably my A-string will stay in place, at least :D Thanks!

Thank you for that I am 70 yr old and just recently got a Uke and thanks to your tutorial videos am getting better with my chord changes I knew guitar chords but hadn't played for a long time due to hurting finger tips but love my Uke its a Aklot concert with what look like the string going through a hole in the bridge any help on restringing that would be much appreciated as one that is in the vulnerable group my Uke as been a God send thank you so much and keep up the good work you're a star.

Thanks for your lovely comment Mike, always lovely to hear my videos and lessons are helping, especially in these horrible times. I haven't done a video changing strings with a string through bridge yet but as soon as I need to or get the opportunity to, I will certainly make one.

Just one thought: Kanile’a puts the groove on the opposite side of the string and recently even developed pins that have no grooves.
I know guitar strings need the grove, but try the Kanile’a approach next time and see what you think.

Hi Chris, I completely get why Kanile'a don't worry to much using the slot as I know many of their ukes (certainly the higher end ones) have a small slot on the bridge hole itself. I would be slightly wary doing this with just a plain hole as it puts a lot of tension squeezing the string with the pin. I haven't tried with a uke but have certainly squeezed / snapped a few guitar strings over the years when no slot has been made either in bridge or pin itself. I may well try it in the future but not something I would personally suggest a beginner to do.

I think a capodaster is very handy before attaching the string to the tuning peg. Than you have both hands free to fixiate the string into the tuning peg. What do you think?

Great suggestion Christian. Not something I have ever done or needed to do but can see it may well make it easier. Thanks

Great video, very helpful. I'm new to the uke so have not needed to change any strings yet so I'm sure I'll be returning to this when the time comes.
Are the beads actually fixed to the strings like they are on steel strings or do they just come in the packet along with the strings?

No the strings generally don’t come with beads like guitar strings but you can easily tie them on if needed. 👍

What type of pins are you using? Do you think the material of the pins will make a sound difference? Like acoustic guitar.

Hi, the pins are the plastic ones that came with the uke. I can imagine the material of the pin may make a difference but with so many other things also affect the sound eg. wood, strings, bracing etc. the only real way of telling would be to experiment. Let me know if you do discover any differences if you try.
