Fixing eBay Junk - Dreamcast Restoration - Part 2 - Disc Read and Boot Issue

  • In this video, I continue to repair the smoky Dreamcast from "It's Mail Day 4". This thing was covered in smoke, but I cleaned up the case. This system had the issue where it told me "Please insert Game disc". After some adjustments, it would boot into the Sega License screen, but back into the menu. I show you how I got this system up and running.

He gets a lot of critique but from what I can tell he's not getting any really bad comments. He gets a lot of good advice that you'll see him apply in later videos too, like the pencil eraser on cartridge connectors, etc.
That's actually refreshing. Unlike Hugh Jeffreys who will tell you to "tape up broken glass (screens/backs)" in the same video he's not doing that, every single time.

Pot tweaking without any sort of multimeter? You need to know if you are actually doing anything to the pot. You might even be putting more resistance impeding the laser. And if you happen to put too much power to the laser, you can shorten the life of the laser and eventually damage it.
Even so, love the restoration project! Keep doing what you do!

I guess seeing you mess with the laser assembly reminded me - I recently picked up a Gamecube, and upon plugging it in to test it, it wasn't reading most of my games. I gave it an inspection, and turns out, there was a wad of paper shoved behind the laser, preventing it from moving. 😂

I would highly recommend that you grease up the GD-Drive arms. I’m sure I could hear like a scratching noice each time it was reading the disc.

@@rockapartie whenever I took disc based systems apart, I always made sure the arms and cogs have fresh grease. Maybe when they first built these they didn’t apply much grease?
Maybe I was just lucky not to have a loud one.

Have you tried using the original laser after you bent those power pins back in place? Maybe that laser wasn't getting enough power either.

Another great video! I saw a video where a guy spent a lot of time trying to adjust the laser and he finally tried swapping parts with a known good system and it turned out the board was the problem and the laser was fine. Since you have spares, it might save ya some time to try that method. I'm very curious if the old laser worked too!
Ignore all the idiots bitching about how you're doing things. We're hobbyist repairmen and we often do things wrong.
Constructive criticism is one thing, whining is another. DEAL WITH IT PEOPLE!!!

Having watched both parts 1 & 2 there, I have to say that you've done a pretty awesome job of restoring this old Sega Dreamcast :o and it does make me jealous in a way that I wish I could do this kind of thing myself, as it would be a great overall feeling to have brought something 'back from the dead' in a way like that, though considering what you said this console had been through, it could've potentially been damaged far beyond the point of repair if it was smoke AND fire damage! D:
Will look forward to seeing part 3 soon hopefully, but no rush as I could certainly understand that this kind of repair/service job could take awhile, as well as requiring a lot of trial and error to see if things work or not (as seen in parts 1 & 2), but here's to hoping you'll be able to better clean that power unit/board part and maybe it'll help restore functionality to those original parts without the replacements (where possible at least)!

The worst part of the video is that you never take readings with a multimeter, then
you touch with your bare hands the power supply without having discharged the capacitors.
The initial value of the laser is very important, because it is the most practical way to play with the pot without lowering the power of the laser too much.
The power supply has capacitors of 250 to 400 volts, if you are going to disassemble the source, disconnect the console from the power without turning it off so that they are discharged.

Hi, I love your channel. I've been learning a lot with your videos. I'm no expert in refurbishing consoles but I'll like to add a piece of knowledge here. The problem you mentioned about having a poor connection from the power supply and the pins to the main board was definitely NOT what was happening, I fixed that problem on 2 units already. When you have this problem the console will randomly reset to the dreamcast logo (like it was being turned off and on again), not to the system menu, the problem was probably your Sonic Adventure GD. If you run into that problem in the future, I recommend using rubbing alcohol on the pins, the bending method didn't do the trick for me.

Steffano Barbieri no light or anything? But if you remove the assembly it will boot into the menu?
Could be a short to ground somewhere. I'd disassemble the laser assembly to make sure nothing is loose and looks right.
It's possible a motor in the drive has failed and is shorting.
Also possible the connection to the power supply is not strong. Do what I did towards the end of the video and bend the pins back a bit. Also inspect them for dirt and grime, possibly clean them with alcohol.

I guess I'm too late here to say it, but still: the trim-pot for the laser can actually even kill the laser itself in some cases. Since it adjusts the current to it, you can burn it with too high current. I should have suggested trying the cleaning process 1st on that other video, but I guess it would still have given issues afterwards

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

good chance of a power supply issue, or could be a bad component on the mainboard. Usually newer systems will turn themselves off to prevent further damage (Which is what a Red Ring of Death on an xbox basically is). I'd try removing and re-seating the Power Supply. Try bend the pins in slightly like I do towards the end of this video for a quick and easy fix. If that doesn't work, probably a bad component - hopefully not the CPU.

You showed a good way of cleaning and tweaking the laser. I should do it as well :)

    • @RetroRepairs

The laser shouldn't have much to do with the system resetting itself, but give it a try. You never know. Sometimes a good cleaning of all components does wonders. Maybe try tear the entire console apart like I did in Part 1 of this series and reconnect it. Could just be a bad connection that gets loose when it heats up.

If you want to know what I mean about the disc spinning crazy fast
Look at this video link: th-cam.com/video/QZ55QOC8siY/w-d-xo.html
(Warning I found out the disc is not spinning so fast as I remember)

You must not clean lens with any type of cleaning fluid. You will destroy polarizing layer on the lens ,if you do that this optical head is unusuable!!only with moisture from your breath is enough !!

If you want to bypass the whole need to repair the laser, you could always go through the process of soldering in an SD Card reader and/or an IDE cable, and boot games directly from a hard drive or SD card through Dreamshell. You'd also need a working GDROM drive temporarily to install Dreamshell, and ideally a replacement BIOS chip for the console on which to install Dreamshell to so you wouldn't need to disc-boot it. It's very well made, and I've used it on multiple consoles in the past. The hard part is the soldering, as well as cutting holes in the case to run the wires outside the console.

Watching the rest of the video, where you try to 'adjust' the laser, I could not believe how you are setting a bad example. Seriously, you never should start turning trim pots without even checking a single voltage. BTW, if that soot is all over the electronics you may read funny voltage values. Clean the damn thing with the right products, designed for electronics. Especially the trim pots. And make sure you don't have any shorts or low resistances in the logic area, because of the soot, since that is composed of conductive carbon.

stop using que tip to clean leans, you basicly scratching it
use dust blower and lens wipes, thats only proper way
    btw nice videos
    keep it comming

no you don't have to adjust the laser power on dreamcast normally. this is not a ps2 that had problems now. you could see the laser is dead just from turning it on though since there is no red so either there is a lot of buildup on the second lower lens or the laser dead. if you see no red laser at all everything else is a waste of time. this don't have invisible lasers now. adjusting the power is the last thing you should ever do. that is going to burnt he laser out because over driving it. you should have just cleaned it before even thinking about adjusting it.

so to sum it up the reason the laser power had to be turned up on the ps2 was because the lenses were dirty. turning up the power made it cut through the dust instead of cleaning the dust off the right way. the thing is with this dreamcast the laser just died or there is a lot of buildup on mirrors and lenses inside the dreamcast one.

Cleaning filthy, greasy PCB's, like that PS, is easy and can be done with "Oven & BBQ Cleaner". It is a white foam. Spray generously on the PCB, let it soak and bubble for a couple of minutes, while working it in every little corner with a long hair paint brush. Rinse well with lukewarm water. Dry with a paper towel and hair dryer (not too hot). Oven cleaner is safe, it will not attack the PCB nor the soldering mask or the printed schematic. It does not attack components or colour codes. I use it all the time to clean electronic stuff, works like a charm, much better than alcohol.

never move the trimmer. NEVER. Now try the original laser unit since the problem is with the power supply.
